  • The worst-selling Microsoft product ever. (Tom's Hardware)

Not the worst product, not by a long shot, but there was no real market for it.

Microsoft used to sell accelerator cards for computers. They started with the SoftCard for the Apple II, which added a Z80 for running CP/M. Later they had an 8086 card called the Mach 10 and then an 80286 card called the Mach 20 for IBM PCs and compatibles, which took over from the 4.77MHz 8088 assuming that's what you had.

None of those are the thing. They all sold... Fine, basically.

No, the thing was the OS/2 operating system - for the Mach 20 card. It required a custom version.

Microsoft sold eleven copies. Eight of them were returned.
One of my former colleagues spoke with the person who took over from him as the support specialist for OS/2 for Mach 20. According to that person's memory [...] a total of eleven copies of "OS/2 for Mach 20" were ever sold, and eight of them were returned. That leaves three customers who purchased a copy and didn't return it. And the support specialist had personally spoken with two of them.
Wait, there was a time when you could return software?

  • Apple meanwhile is now selling a sock for $229.95. (The Verge)

    It's called the iPhone Pocket.

    It's not an iPhone.

    It's not even a pocket.

    It's pretty literally a sock.

Yes, we've been down this road before. But at least both Steve Jobs and his audience knew the idea was ridiculous, and in 2004 you got a six pack of socks in a rainbow of colours for $29.

  • AMD has mentioned - not announced, but officially mentioned - Zen 6 and Zen 7 as upcoming products. (WCCFTech)

No specs or prices or dates but they are officially a thing that might happen some day.

  • The Chinese electric vehicle market is imploding. (The Atlantic) (archive site)

I saw - just yesterday, I think - a YouTube video reporting that Chinese EV market leader BYD was losing money twice as fast as Tesla is making it - around $10 billion per quarter.
In China, you can buy a heavily discounted "used" electric car that has never, in fact, been used. Chinese automakers, desperate to meet their sales targets in a bitterly competitive market, sell cars to dealerships, which register them as "sold", even though no actual customer has bought them. Dealers, stuck with officially sold cars, then offload them as "used", often at low prices. The practice has become so prevalent that the Chinese Communist Party is trying to stop it.
Sounds like the same scam we've seen a thousand times before, right before things turn pear-shaped.

Often but not exclusively in nominally communist countries.

  • ClickFix may be the biggest security threat your family has never heard of. (Ars Technica)

    I think not.
ClickFix often starts with an email sent from a hotel that the target has a pending registration with and references the correct registration information. ... Once the mark accesses the malicious site referenced, it presents a CAPTCHA challenge or other pretext requiring user confirmation. The user receives an instruction to copy a string of text, open a terminal window, paste it in, and press Enter.
There are two kinds of people in my family. The first kind would say Open a what? and call one of the second kind. Who is probably in the next room installing BSD 4.4 on an IBM RT they found at Goodwill for $5.

The second kind would laugh and say They're not even trying anymore! before returning to the task at hand.

  • The Thunderobot Mix G2 is a mini gaming PC with an Intel 275HX CPU and a mobile RTX 5090. (Liliputing)

Well, up to one of those. It starts with a 255HX and a mobile 5070 Ti (remember that Nvidia's mobile model numbers are generally equivalent to the next lower desktop model) for $2105.

  • The Olares On is a mini gaming PC with an Intel 275HX CPU and a mobile RTX 5090. (Liliputing)

Although it claims not to be, those are indeed the specs. One model only at $2999.

Both of these systems have, for some strange reason, only a single HDMI port.

8 Went to the doctor today. All measurements are headed in the right direction.

Bought something to eat (since my grocery order this morning was short several items) and walked home up the hill.

Where I took my blood pressure again - 77/53 - and promptly fell over.

When I mentioned earlier that sometimes my blood pressure meds work a little too well, that's what I meant. If I start feeling faint I have to sit down immediately or my body will arrange things to suit itself.

22 @Pixy: Also on BP meds here. I had a few dizzy spells in the beginning of that as well in the first 6 weeks after taking the medication. I'm well past that point now (1 year, 4 months on it now.)

Hang in there. Good advice you got on sitting down if you feel dizzy. That puts you a lot closer to the floor (or ground) if you do black out - less chance of injuries.

Chart when you take your med on a spreadsheet. Try to shoot for the same time-of-day within a one hour window. (Keeping track also helps re-assure you that you actually took the thing so you don't accidentally double-up, which also can cause blood pressure to crash.)

Also: G'morning Horde.

29 "Sit down, rest, drink water, says my doctor."

If you're dehydrated, your BP drops. (Less fluid to pump around, after all.)

Plus you need to be sitting calm for 5 minutes with the blood pressure cuff at your heart level before you take your blood pressure. Which means you can't read the crap that idiots like me post here while you're taking your BP.

Of course, if your readings were that low, maybe you should read more crap to raise them.

46 Same B/P meds problem Miss Pixy as you described. My cardiologist when pesented with 2 weeks of my pressures stated I had some too low numbers; but he did no adjustments. So, I cut my 40mg lisinopril to 20mg/day, felt better with repeated B/P checks to confirm better systolic/diastolic numbers. Cardiologist agreed and changed dosage to 20 mg / day. So with some too low B/P still evident, I adusted to 10mg/day and feel much better. Have not informed Cardio of what I did but am very stable. Pill cutters are your friend.

49 From the ONT, the story about the distillery losing profits on sales of whiskey: A product called "Remus" bourbon and another called "Penelope" Bourbon do not exactly inspire the desire to try them, do they? ("Penelope"? Is there another blended whiskey in their lineup called "Ulysses"?)

People still drink, I guess. But at current price$$$ for a fifth (if the stuff still comes in that size), I can imagine they're a lot more reluctant to shell out on a product they don't know. And perhaps they drink less overall to make what they have bought last longer.

62 I set up two more rules in the Inbox of my old work email (which, as an alumnus, I have for life). One deletes those "quarantine at messaging" emails we got all the time telling us how hard the security system was working for us. The other was a rule to forward the every-six-months email about "It's time to change your password" to my Proton account. This way I'll know to go take care of it.

When I was having trouble signing in to the old work email last week, I called the help desk. They took care of it. But when I mentioned setting up the rules above, the girl on the phone seemed puzzled and said, "Not sure what you mean. We can find someone to help you with that." 70 Got to feed the furry thugs in a little bit. Then I'll drink some more water, change, stretch, and hit the road. Temp is about 52 F., humidity still down (for now), almost no wind.

Today I'll run my Dan Post boots to be resoled to a suburban shoe repair place I've used many times. They resoled these boots a few years ago and refurbished my 1994 Eddie Bauer leather shoulder briefcase back in May. A good excuse, too, to fill up the Buick on ethanol-free gas and just do a little "fun" driving.

75 I had several syncope episodes after being diagnosed CHF, was put on Carvedilol and Lisinopril meds. Finally the cardiologist did a Orthostatic hypotension BP test and confirmed my BP drops too much in upright position and has discontinued all meds for now. The test is so simple and I think it should have been done before the meds were prescribed. Test is just take BP laying down, sit up and wait 1 minute, test again then stand up and wait 1 minute, test again. I used compression stockings for a while, they helped but biggest help was stopping the pills.

126 Mosquitoes are very seasonal and are driven by how much rain has fallen in the preceding weeks. We just finished up a couple weeks of very wet weather where the typical dry sandy soil we have was wet even at midday even when it handy rained. Saturated.

I could sit in my kitchen and look out the window to all the mosquitoes just randomly flying around my deserted back yard.

The dragonflies have been very busy as I imagine the bats have been too.

The first cold front usually around Haloween is the usual end of the bad times but they are here year round especially after a good rain.

So the rainfall drives the major population but that's coupled with the seasonal rainfall.

Southern FL gets a lot of mosquitoes year round.

152 Most of my adult life, perhaps all the worth-while part of it, has been spent messing about with aeroplanes. Kenneth Grahame once wrote that 'there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.' With that I would agree yet for a fleeting period in the world's history I think that aeroplanes ran boats a very close second for enjoyment. For about 30 years there was a period when aeroplanes would fly when you wanted them to but there were still fresh things to be be learned on every flight, a period when aeroplanes were small and easily built so that experiments were cheap and new designs could fly within six months of the first glimmer in the mind of the designer. That halcyon period started about the year 1910 and it was in full flower when I was a young man; it died with the second war when aeroplanes had grown too costly and complicated for individuals to own or even to operate. I count myself lucky that that fleeting period coincided with my youth and my young manhood, and that I had a part in it.

153 Ha ha!, the sun is coming above the usually clouded-out horizon, over the Atlantic and through the small gap in the tree line and shining right on my computer screen.

That's never happened before. I just moved here this summer though.

How annoying!!!

Ha!

154 Having no electricity is an inconvenience. Having no water is deadly.

Regarding Dallas, I haven't been over to that college town by you since early '21'. Went every year for four years for work, for a week.
Always saddened me what had happened with all the building between where I lived and the lake from summer 64 to summer 66. No more "country."

Also in Slide Rule is Nevil Shute's keen analysis of private enterprise vs government production in the UK. He was spot on.

The private R-100 dirigible, with Shute as a key member of the design and fabrication team, flew across the Atlantic Ocean to Canada, frolicked around for a while, then flew back to the UK.

The government R101 dirigible had one test flight of short duration then on a flight to India, crashed in France, killing a number of people.

157 145 Texas should be building nuke and desalination plants starting 5 years ago.

On 9/12 Bush should have started building a small modular nuke on every Mil Base with access to water and leasing them back to local utilities and telling the Mid East you can drink your fucking oil.

Still got some cow pastures left. But you are also probably seeing a lot of infill development near you.

Yet Kansas is a net loser in population. Urban outmigration?

Never slide down a slide when the Temp is over 80.

161 Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Yes, we've been down this road before. But at least both Steve Jobs and his audience knew the idea was ridiculous, and in 2004 you got a six pack of socks in a rainbow of colours for $29.

For far less, you could buy a bag of Skittles candy and "taste the rainbow".

"Colour", heh. The added "u" is so cute! I tease my IRL Canadian friends about that. I also berate them for their green, greasy shitting namesake geese.

"Check our my coloured velour garment -- do you like it?"
