Using a mountain of data, a team of two dozen scientists have created a digital road atlas of the Roman imperial world, complete with many features you’d recognize from Google Maps. Called Itiner-e, it displays the roads that would have been found throughout the Roman Empire around the year 150 CE. I went out this afternoon, and made ready to load three tires in the back of the white Suburban so I can take it to the tire shop tomorrow to have them mounted and balanced. The third row seat was in there, as well as some old upholstery and other junk. Drag out the seat, and what do I find? The jack and wheel wrench I couldn't find 3 nights ago. Doh! And the spare wheel had the same size and style of tire as the flat, and its mates. Tread really chewed by rocks, though. But it held air. But also really stale dated: 2006! The "new" set of tires I want to mount are 2016, so not quite stale-dated. Also well stored, so in better condition than their age would indicate.
So I busted the spare off the rim, and mounted a singleton 235/85R16 that I had hanging around for years. Has near-perfect tread on it, too. Had a bitch of a time getting it to bead up; had to do the ether trick about ten times before it took. But it's all good now.

Heh! No. Mostly, All I got was a small poof! followed by wan blue flames for a few seconds. I think the rim and tire were too cold for the ether to vaporize properly. Maybe the repeated efforts finally warmed it up enough. Took the very last shpritz from the ether can to do it, too.

I totally agree on thrift shops in FL, not just for beaded evening bags (altho I also have one of my aunt's made in France), but wine glasses, etc. Sometimes you can find awesome stuff there! I bought an entire set of water and wine glasses for $18 that are lovely. An expensive Oriental bowl for about the same remains in my livingroom.
Now I am over run with glasses and other stuff and when I croak my sons will not grieve because they'll be cussing about the estate sale, which will make them some $ if they are not stupid.
Regarding the end of the shut down...President Trump is not signing of free stuff to illegals, or that's what I saw.

I would be happy to have just a complete set of Corelle, plain or patterned, no matter, other than they should all be the same. Great stuff. Tough, light weight, easy to wash, and thin, so a stack doesn't overwhelm your china cabinet.

I'm really, really bad, Piper. And have been collecting stuff for decades for me and our house. Our LR furniture is all antique from my grandmothers (reupholstered) plus an ivory sofa (with that outdoor fabric, Sunbrella, bought off the floor of the store as no longer making them). It looks very fancy but can withstand chocolate from the grands. The family room is Western and leather except for my red velvet type chair and ottoman.
My husband frets of wth will happen when my 95yr old mother dies. I've already told him. I am eccentric and care not what anyone thinks!
I should be ashamed for all I have, but seeing as how we started with nothing, were very poor for over 5yrs, and I did not get my grandmother's china til my elderly aunt died (by then we'd been married 20yrs), I simply don't care what sons or brothers-in-law's judge. I love all my stuff.
I also have a ton of books all over the nuthous. Sons are going to suffer when I croak. Ha! Mom's revenge!

Democrats folded. They got none of their demands after the longest shutdown in history. The only minor concession they got was the rehiring of a couple thousand people who had their jobs before Democrats shut down the government.

Well, that arctic air mass is on its way down here. Got breezy this afternoon, and dew point crashed from 60F to mid 30Fs this afternoon, but temps stayed warmish. Now, temp is dropping. It will bottom out only around 36F this morning, but high will be only around 45F tomorrow, then it takes the plunge down to 26F.
Lowest temp so far here as been 33F, but no frost on the ground yet. So, it's a smidge late for the first freeze, but a smidge early for the first hard freeze (28F or lower).

Anyway, the GSP guys were going about conditions will be right for perfect dendritic snow crystal growth, and the snow to liquid equivalent ratio will be a whopping 25:1 (that is, 25" of snow is just 1" of rain). Very fluffy low density snow, like cotton candy.

True. I have seen air-inflatable belts to wrap around the tire tread; then air them up to constrict the tire tread and splay the beads out. A ratchet strap might work, too. Nice thing about the ether trick is that it beads the tire fully nearly every time, if you can make the ether "pop". I have used it many times. I use a flaming wad of paper on the end of a long stick to touch it off. No way I want any part of my body near the action, LOL.

Ran into this issue when having an estate sale for family member. There was a lot of vintage furniture, and marble-top tables. It wasn't a big draw.
Personally, there are a few pieces of old 'dark' furniture in our house, and I like them. But I prefer the mid-century maple pieces we have, as I like maple.

We did the general layout but my ex found this really spectacular cabinet builder/blackmail artist in Maine who fine tuned everything including making those special storage ideas for a kitchen that never occurred to me. It was all built out of solid cherry stained dark with painted white interiors and dark green granite counter tops. He even sent his own team of finish carpenters to install everything rather than let the builder who was doing the house remodel touch any of it.

If you were to pass a law that federal employees don't get any back pay whenever there's a shutdown, shutdowns wouldn't last longer than three days. Congrescritters would never vote to stop paying themselves, but if Trump passed an EO affecting gov't workers, Congress would have no choice but to pass it. Story I heard from an African aid worker:
He and his team were building wells in a village. Our storyteller became friends with one of the younger men in the village. Young villager liked baking and thought he could make a go of it as a baker so he saved some money from his job and bought enough dough to make a bunch of loaves of bread.
He then went down to the village and started selling it. The locals with jobs were willing to pay for bread as opposed to making it themselves and things were looking good for our baker. Until one of the village elders wandered by. The elder asked the baker about what he was doing and then took all the bread...because there were hungry children in the village dontchaknow.
Our young baker learned he was a fool saving his money and trying to make something of himself because it would all get taken away "for the common good".

Here's another quick story. When I was in Africa (Malawi the first time), I saw a whole bunch of clothing that was given to this particular village by church-going Americans. A truly lovely gesture, but it ended up killing businesses that tried to make clothing for the locals because they couldn't compete with 'free'.

There was a documentary about the troubles in Africa... Empire of Dust(?) that kind of describes what you are talking about. I have not watched it myself, but it has come up on a few different podcasts that I listen to.

But the textbook definition of communism is state ownership of the means of production while socialism technically allows private ownership while basically controlling it. Fascism is muddled mix of the two.

Interesting. Don't see it on radar -- must be low, under the radar. I do see light blue along the TN border as they were predicting.
I noticed some little green blobs just east and NE of me an hour or so ago, little green patch right over Sugar Tit. But none of the stations there showed any accumulation. Surface air is dry enough that it could easily evaporate before hitting the ground.

I went outside -- still pretty clear overhead. It was cloudy earlier, and obscured a chance to see the ISS pass overhead. Another opportunity tomorrow evening, fingers crossed.
Anyway, the waning near half Beaver is close to Jupiter on on side, and right next to Castor and Pollux, the Twins of Gemini on the other.

Yay! Progress! Got a couple of bags of junk ready to be thrown out. I'm trying to get rid of stuff. It's proven harder than expected. I'm bald but I really don't need that many hats. But like gals and shoes, I'M ADDICTED!!! Got a lot of old electronics. VCRs, pre-HDMI DVD, phone's, etc. I'm throwing them out. I don't think I'm a hoarder but evidence says otherwise.

Well, temp here just broke below 40F, 39.2F and slope is getting steeper. Dew point is 31F and fairly flat. Forecast low is 36F, but I imagine I'll beat that by 3F or so. It might even hit 32F. Still pretty clear.

Between 9 and 10 F currently, may get up to about 25 tomorrow if the sun shines. Dew point is 8.8, intermittent fog off the ocean since the water is still warm but the temp is cold. Lots of hoar frost. Really quite lovely when the sun hits it.
Roads out here are fine, with plenty of sand where it might get dicey. Anchorage roads are shit as usual. Won't be going near them until next Sunday, thank Heaven.
