Gun Thread: Second November Edition!

110925 Calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Second November Edition? The time, she's flying!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Cigar of the Week

110925 diogenes mystery cigar scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of El Mysterio Cigaro

Mystery Cigar

The first thing you will note in the picture is the lack of a wrapper and label. This is because the provenance of this cigar is unknown to me. My source was my neighbor, a retired sailor, who received it (along with several others) from another sailor who claimed he picked them up in Costa Rica. He said they were Cubans. So can you really trust a sailor???

Perhaps.

So. I took a couple of these and put them into my humidor and let them rest for a couple of months. From the initial touch, they seemed a bit dry and the humidor lets them rehydrate a bit. I'm glad I did as this turned out to be an excellent cigar, very close to being on par with the likes of the Cohiba or the Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva.

In fact, this cigar was a real treat. A very smooth smoke, easy to clip and light. It had a light draw and the ash burned evenly. The smoke was plentiful, and rich with aroma. Every third was a pleasant discovery. The first third had a bit of bite with cinnamon and light pepper. It mellowed in the second third with a pleasant tobacco taste that didn't burn the tongue as some might do. The aroma was even more powerful here as well. The final third was disappointing in that the cigar ended too soon. It was a rich smooth flavor. Smoking a cigar should be a time to sit back, relax, and just enjoy the blessing of our lives. This one was perfect for that.

I have said in other reviews that a good cigar will improve the whiskey and that a good whiskey will improve the cigar. This stick was the perfect compliment to each glass I enjoyed with it. (Yes, there were several)

I wish I could pass along a name and price but alas I cannot. Sometimes life throws us a mystery that is meant to be unsolved but not forgotten.

Bigly excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! Maybe a Nicaraguan?

Local Cigar Roller in Weston, MO.

Late breaking tip from our pal KCSteve

Not a smoker but you asked for some local cigar makers. Weston, MO is a small (formerly) river town near Kansas City. I say formerly because the river moved one year.

They have various little festivals we like to go to and in one of the buildings that used to be a riverside warehouse there's a local cigar maker that *smells* wonderful - the Weson Tobacco Company - Weston Tobacco

I'm betting you have a reader here in the KC area who *does* smoke who can give you a hands-on report on their wares.

Thanks KCSteve! How about it all y'all? Anyone tried this roller? Do they deserve a place among the links below?

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World
Weson Tobacco Company New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Mastering double action trigger pulls (for speed) while maintaining accuracy with a revolver is one of the most challenging firearms tasks (for me, anyway) I know of. And each revolver has a slightly different feel to its trigger, which only adds to the challenge.

24 We talked about training for trauma first aid last week. Someone suggested a "Stop the Bleed" course. This is a free course offered a lot of different places.

sra blaster and I attended one this past week. We have certificates!

It's about 90 minutes and a limited curriculum. It focuses on, you guessed it, stopping the bleeding when someone has had some sort of injury that causes bleeding.

Highly recommended. And then you are going to want to have tourniquets and quikclot bandages handy.

26 A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the Turkish firm of TriStar was now making a clone of the Glock 19 9mm pistol, model name is "APOC", at a very reasonable price. I finally got to shoot mine. Ran out to the local gravel pit as the sun was going down. No time to put up a paper target and set up a rest, so I settled for blasting some soup cans with some factory "range and practice" ammo.
First impressions: This gun is one heck of a deal. The fiber optic sights made three blazing dots. The trigger is quite decent, and I won't be modifying it. The cans, which started out at 15 yards, kept rolling further and further away. Empty cases landed in a loose pile about four feet away at 3 o'clock. I put 100 rounds through it, with one malfunction on the fifth shot (slide didn't close all the way) and zero after that. The last ten rounds were some dubious factory JHP, and they fed and fired with no problem. Half the rounds were shot with a Magpul magazine, which worked with no problems.
If I spot another one of these locally, I'm going to grab it and add it to the stockpile.

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at November 09, 2025 07:15 PM (YYotJ)

27 No range news. I did buy ammo. I have a .357 revolver and a .9mm carbine, so .9mm, .38 Special, and .357 ammo was purchased from Buds Gun Shop online. I do have a gun shop near by. Probably stop by this week and buy some more.

The recent elections have me a bit skittish. Marxists have taken over the statehouse (VA). I haven't supported financially 2nd ammendment orgs. before. Various reasons, mostly trust issues on my part. Any suggestions. I'm very skittish about the NRA. Have they gotten there shit together after the last guy, whatever his name was?

Posted by: Puddleglum, drive by pew pew at November 09, 2025 07:15 PM (sAmhv)

28 Del,
The revolver has about an 8lb pull and it's long. Her pistol has a very light pull, maybe 2lbs. Plus the Revolver weighs probably twice what her pistol does. She also only shot it in one practice before the match. It was tiring for her since she shot 6 guns total in competition Friday.

Great review Diogenes - even though it’s not actionable, as we don’t know what you smoked!

Burning a La Palina Natural on the porch after a good swim on a beautiful warm November day. Woody smoke, perfectly OK but not one to get by the 5-pack, for me.

And one area in which I am particularly deficient is pairing with spirits, as my smoking is 95% in mid-afternoons, so coffee is my regular accompaniment. Gotta work on that.

Some day I hope to work on this issue with rum, in Nicaragua or the DR. It’s important to have goals in life.

Instead I am looking at the rifle I hope to procure early next year. I also need to look at getting scope rings and maybe a 30 MOA base to mount the scope on.

And in other news, I FINALLY received my new handgun license from the NYPD. I sent in the renewal request around the end of May and they only just got through the "investigation" process about 2 weeks ago. Received the new license in the mail on Wednesday.

Thankfully this will be the LAST time I will have to go through this as I should be living in a Free State when the current license expires.

If Spawn can practice w/ that revolver before competing, and the revolver has a long enough barrel (4-6"), there should be enough real estate to place a coin towards the end of the barrel before trying to pull the trigger. The goal is to complete a double action trigger pull w/o knocking the coin off the barrel. If the old coin trick doesn't work, watch Spawn's front sights as she pulls the trigger (single or double

Hola Red! sra blaster still thankful for your spotting!

I was checking out trauma kits in relation to the course and the American College of Surgeons (one of the sponsors of the Stop the Bleed course) store has actually good prices in comparison with say Amazon and I feel more confident in the sourcing of the components - I have heard (on the internet!) that CAT tourniquets acquired from there may be counterfeit.

Well, that is sobering and accurate.

When I say "Remember, remember the Ninth of November", my focus is on 36 years ago. When I came home from school and turned on the TV and heard on CNN "The East German government has opened the sector borders with West Berlin". To which I said in the empty living room, "They can't do that! Because if they open the sector borders with West Berlin, what's the point of having-"

77 Good evening Horde. Thanks Weasel!

Why yes, we have been to the range. Started out very strong. Somehow, all the available mojo vanished to places unknown. Tried to diagnose and remedy, but failed miserably.

Decided to deploy the etch-a-sketch method of starting over with a blank slate. Re-built all the fundamental pieces and did dry firing with very positive results. Nice to be able to regroup and recover.

In a personal post-mortem, my guess is isolating the trigger motion while keeping the rest of the grip stationary. But that's a guess. We'll see next time.

78 Range time this week consisted of taking a Colt AR-15A2 HBAR (one of the early ones) to the range for zeroing. Using only iron sights, I zeroed on an Army 25 yard zero target in 20 rounds using five-shot shot groups. The old HBAR produced pretty tight shot groups, so its definitely capable of decent accuracy.

Posted by: Ed L at November 09, 2025 07:37 PM (BCwQW)

79 Yes, I went to the range this week and brought an Iver Johnson Sidewinder (vintage .22LR revolver) and an HK P2000 in .40.

The Sidewinder was used but was very minty, and I've decided that I need to make a dedicated effort to use it more. It's still a little rough on fit and finish, and I haven't properly broken it in.

The HK was of course terrific, but the weather was turning and even with gloves my fingers were getting numb. Snow on the ground today. Still a worthwhile endeavor.

83 Will be involved in disposing of a gun and ammo collection of moderate size, in a place far far away.

Will probably take a few of the handguns at a good price, probably none of the long guns (most have very large holes in the end, bear-swatters and the like mostly useful in AK, MT, or ID).

Expect to sell most of it to local (there) gun stores.

One interesting item will be 9K rounds of West German 7.62X51 NATO surplus, perfect condition, still in cases of 200-round battle packs.

94 I had previously asked for advice for a training .22 rifle for new grandson - and got lots of good advice.

Pulled the trigger on the Savage Arms - Youth Rascal.

It was $10 off (down to $139.99) and Savage had a $30 rebate on a few of their .22 entry-level rifles.

I got him a bolt-action Savage rifle for $110 that has an accu-trigger!

I haven't shot it yet, but figured I should at least steal it from the store. Bolt action is nice, and the trigger is very nice. Has a peep sight and is tapped for a scope.

I had never contemplated the "bright-colored" rifle thing for kid before, but decided to go with the blue rifle. That way if he ever picks up anybody else's rifle on the range, then we SHOULD notice immediately.

Any shooting/operating advice from any Moron with experience on that little gun would be appreciated.

I understand that ammo is difficult to unload if its provenance is unknown. Because safety enters the equation, some businesses won't touch the stuff if it didn't come directly from the factory. Military surplus still in its original packaging (cases, tins, etc.) might do better because the packaging can hold off some environmental storage problems (humidity, heat, etc.).

105 OK, before I get to the comments, here's a question...

Inventorying your firearms - do you, and how do you?

There are some apps for your phone that will let you inventory your firearms and your ammo. At least one advertises itself as keeping *everything* on your phone (no servers anywhere). Another lets you download (or upload) the info through various online services (DropBox, etc.). One lets you keep a wishlist. It also can track when you last cleaned it, how many rounds through it, etc.

I had a spreadsheet of my weapons and ammo - just basic information, but it was lost on a hard drive that went kaput. Now it's in a document.

Jesse had a notebook with many handwritten notes about all his guns. It was a PITA to photocopy the whole thing when his son and I split them up, but I kept the original and refer to it often. (Because if I'm being honest, I don't even know what some of my guns are without looking them up.) It was very helpful to have this hard copy (J had showed it to me early on) and not need a password or anything to access a doc after he was gone.

Also, it is a personal treasure with his handwriting and often very characteristic notes in his inimitable voice.

133 I did a little gunsmithing with a Super Safety.

I wanted to put it in an Extar EP9. I had seen a post that you need to do some dremeling to make this work. I did the dremeling. Couldn't get it to work in dry fire sequence.

So I put the super safety into an AR15. And it still would not work in dry fire sequence.

So clearly something wrong with the super safety. I asked Grok, describing the symptoms, and it gave me recommendations.

A Super Safety requires a specially cut trigger to work. Took a little bit of dremel/polish to fix that up, according to Grok. It worked!

So back to the EP9. Nope - still no worky. The bolt won't go back far enough at least with the charging handle. Though I am reading that may be functioning as designed. Just seems...sketchy.

Now, need to get a test day with the AR....

142 I had a shooting epiphany recently:
Looking at my loading bench, I had a whole lot of bullets that did not meet my exacting requirements for, e.g., half minute accuracy.
Thinking about it, and testing the theory, I discovered that you do not need that level of accuracy to hit stuff a long way away. (Nota bene, I am not an F Class shooter.)
Again, thinking about it, one MOA accuracy at 1000 yards is about 11”. The difference between1/2 foot versus 1 foot is just not that huge, at least for ringing steel.
So, like with the Berger 156s I mentioned earlier, I am going through my work bench and loading up.
It worked with 147s recently - I shall report on my theory.
I bet Weasel has some thoughts.

157 I understand that ammo is difficult to unload if its provenance is unknown. Because safety enters the equation, some businesses won't touch the stuff if it didn't come directly from the factory. Military surplus still in its original packaging (cases, tins, etc.) might do better because the packaging can hold off some environmental storage problems (humidity, heat, etc.).
Posted by: Ed L
-------
Liability issue. Single based smokeless powder has about 60-75 years worth of powder stabilizers when the powder/ammo is stored under the appropriate conditions (temp and humidity).

Double based powders about half of that lifespan (35-40 years and deteriorating nitroglycerin is the reason). Double based powders use nitroglycerin and guncotten aka nitro cellulose as bases).

Unless you travel in reloader and antique ammo circuits, it generally requires dissassembly of at least some the rounds to determine condition as often the references to foreign ammo is obscure as to what exact powder they did use in a particular cartridge.

This goes for old canister powders as well--when smokeless deteriorates due to stabilizers being used up, it develops an acrid smell and rusty appearance.

Pride of providence, not pride of month.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at November 09, 2025 08:29 PM (0sNs1)

167 FWIW,
I would also caution people about firing old ammo of unknown providence or even using reloading tumblers to remove corrosion from the cases. With unknown powders, particular stick types, you can shorten the sticks and thus affect burn rates for the powder, removing substantial corrosion can mask powder issues causing the corrosion or cause some weak spots in the brass.

Some foreign military surplus ammo is known also to be horrendously corrosive (avoid old French surplus in both pistol and rifle) and most old primers used ground glass (which is not the best for barrels) in them to help regulate how 'hot' they were.

Old mercury primed ammo (found before WWII era) are never to be fired as mercury reacts with the brass to soften and weaken it. Not good and discard the brass as salvage even if you deprime it. Potassium Chlorate primers which superceded mercuric primers, are corrosive and found quite often as recently as the 90's mfg. in some military surplus ammo.

One last thing, old smokeless powder that has deteriorated along with physical damage from rough handling of the powder (flake and stick are the worst), can result in changed burn rates of powder.

Sorry, not picking on your post but warning people in general about old surplus ammo.

1970's to 00's era German is generally excellent ammo in decent shape from storage albeit Berdan primed which is not easily reloadable (takes special tools). You'll also find some odd stuff too like 303 British loaded by Germans in that period probably for down low exports to former British colonies.

Some of the German military export ammo also can also be steel cased as their H&K series was rather rough on cases and most nations don't really want their citizens to reload ammo in the first place.

Guess I was also explaining why a lot of businesses do not want it either due to the factors you mentioned plus ordinary deterioration from age.

Best conditioned surplus ammo I saw was Swiss, followed by Germans post WWII. Radway Green from the Brits too.

Final answer will only come from local (another place) gun stores.

But I will note that all of my 54R ammo is Soviet/Soviet-bloc milsurp in original (air-tight spam can) packaging, dating from 70s/80s. Never a problem and still to be found for sale online by commercial sources.

In June I got a chronograph, and it's quite useful to quantify "hot" ammo, which in turn can provide insight on what should or should not be kept.

I hated cleaning fouling from cleaning blanks from ARs whenever we did war games with a passion and don't ever fire them in my firearms.

Germans with their original issued WWI era GEW 98's didn't blue receivers and left them unfinished. Those receivers they reused after than are often blued as well as those using them for sporters, etc.

CMP grades the bores and throats so while if you are in the store you can visually inspect them, you can also just check the tag. That price point is suspiciously close to non-firing Garands for display purposes only.

On the other hand, demand might be really low and CMP is self-supporting (which is why they are open during the shutdown). Since these were obviously used for parades, they likely were not fired at all. This still leaves the risk of water infiltration, lack of cleaning, etc.

There is a program to restore deactivated rifles which should free up more Garands as well as 1903A3s. I was kind of holding out for the latter, but the M1917 called to me.

Always disassemble a few rounds in a lot--rusty looking powder, acrid smell, not worth firing.

Some are not worth firing at any price. Some of the post WWII French ammo is recognized as insanely corrosive to barrels and some of that came into this country from Syria, a land not known for its care in ammo handling. Turkish and Pakistani ammo storage also has a well known issue where often storage was not well done resulting in either overpressure ammo or hangfires/bullets stuck in bores.

Chronographs can help but sometimes you get nasty things like hangfires/stuck bullets or overpressure events before you even fire more than one round.

I've disassembled some for recovery of odd bullets (Italian Carcano in particular) and you can often find nasty stuff ready for salvaging bullets and perhaps a case if you care to dive into berdan priming which I don't.

Often simply going to grok AI or some other search engine using the markings can get a hit. I quit keeping up with milsurp ammo when I stopped actively collecting them about 10 years ago but the older gun boards or sometimes the small crew of ammo collectors who know headstamps like the back of their hand often have useful information.

If the guy has some fired headstamped ammo, I would start with those markings.

193 Oh, Ed L, I found a Colt Python for less than $1,200. It has a "minor cosmetic blemish." I went ahead and pulled the trigger, as it were. It should get here before my favorite FFL raises its transfer rates. I had some money handy, and didn't let this one get away.

Posted by: GWB at November 09, 2025 08:52 PM (LjAsy)

194 whig - kicking myself, duh! When I was around this stuff I didn't bother to check a headstamp. And there was an open battle pack with the cardboard boxes inside. Well, can do it next time at the location.

Meanwhile I'll do as you say and poke around for postings/discussions. For Soviet stuff there were a few good sites that explained all markings, which I sort of memorized so I know those now. Imagine it won't be hard to find date-of-manufacture info.

Posted by: rhomboid at November 09, 2025 08:54 PM (U/Byj)

195 190 For various reasons I'm not in a buying mode now, but dang if the 1917 wasn't kinda sorta on my wish list. Already load 30-06, so it checks one of my Excuses to Buy boxes. And you get the Enfield action, right. Hmmm.

Posted by: rhomboid

Of all the Mauser type military actions, the 1917/P14 were a culmination of strength and excellent sights. Century built some 300 Win Mags to sell out of surplus P14 receivers in the 1980's (they are a bit shorter in length and fit the 300 Win Mag case length better). Some milsurp converters built 300 Norma Magnums from 1917 actions.

Only weak spot is the ejector spring which is delicate and easily broken.

It's the 4 1/2 inch barrel. Black finish (that's not "blued" anymore, is that right?).

Posted by: rhomboid

Usually coded on the crate if not the headstamp or battle packages. That alone tells me that it is probably 80's to 90's vintage as earlier 60's and 70's German military ammo was in regular cardboard boxes IIRC. Someone like Bif or Diogenes might know as well that spent time in Germany during the Cold War.

198 Nurse, ammoseek.com still lists quite a few PPQ mags for sale (some in 45ACP, but 9mm too). Good place to start.

Haven't checked TripleK (with whom I have a sort of indirect connection) here in town, but would think it's worth checking their website as well.

If you picked up a Python w/ the standard "satin" finish, you stole that thing for $1,200. The "blemished" ones I've seen have only minor problems. One had the blemished polishing on the frame beneath the grips where it can't be seen unless you remove the grips first.

You definitely stole that thing. The blued version goes for a couple of hundred dollars more than the satin stainless.

Pick a Winchester or Remington receivers over the Eddystone if you have a choice. Eddystone had an issue with heat treatment on some of the receivers that is not as well known as the old 1903's but is documented in old WWII era military decomissioning documents instructing arsenals on the issue.

Due to the nickel steel use and the overbuilt Mauser design of the bolt/gas venting, not so much a problem safety wise but cracking on the left side of the receiver ring is the usual problem with the Eddystones that have heat treatment issues. Not repairable. Some gunsmiths noted the issue when rebarrelling Eddystone receivers. Earlier story was that the females working at Eddystone had to use pneumatic tools to install barrels and overtorqued them, then when the old barrel was removed, the receivers cracked.

More likely though to be a heat treatment issue as Eddystone was a hurry up job.

WWII era refinished receivers and barrels may have JA (Johnson Automatic) or HS (High Standard) and are gray green parkerized. WWI era are a deep blackish parkerized by the end of WWI and early ones were blued.

Not hard fix to actually alter the ejector spring and Numrich used to actually sell them as a retrofit along with teh awful Dayton Traister Cock on Opening retrofit kit. Like Enfields, P14s and 1917's cock on closing, not opening like Mausers and US Springfields. Upsets some folks.

I am busy providing full employment to the medical industry. Next week coming, I have a whole week of doctor appointments and tests . Thyroid biopsy, nerve ablation of lumbar, and surgically removing nerve impingement of peripheral nerves on the cervical section of my back. If the Senate Ds allow enough up-next-year members to vote to end the shutdown, I sure hope it doesn't come at any/much cost. Because the fact that the Ds would do this only confirms they're in an untenable position, in which case, Rs should stand pat (i.e. no "concessions" for clean CR). As this would imply the Ds will cave soon, regardless.

But I haven't seen much sensible game management in the Senate Rs for many years. Back when I was up there you rarely had to ask "can't anyone here play this game?".

237 And I keep forgetting to note that now, in addition to my 1911 experiencing amazingly serious jams (FTF) with my standard 200g SWC reloads, my M&P 22 handgun is now FTE'ing what I believe is the ammo it's always liked (Federal Champion).

On the 1911 I have avoided dealing with it by switching to 230g plated bullets (only because I found them for the same price as my usual lead SWCs). Though I haven't yet loaded any of the new projectiles to see if that solves the issue.

For the 22, gonna have to dig out all my different brands/loads of 22 and try them out. One of the calibers I hope to ferry back via airline luggage from the distant place I'm dealing with an estate sale is 22LR, of which the previous owner has tons.
