First-World Problems...

80scup25.jpg

I used to have two of them, but one perished in an industrial accident. Well, I knocked it off a banister and it cracked into about 10 pieces, mostly along the repair lines! So my one remaining mug, which is barely 40 years old, must last the rest of my life!

Pathetically, the company doesn't make them any more. How a consumer products company can last without paying attention to their customers is a mystery, but I will persevere...maybe.

Unless the remaining one breaks. Then...I'll be coming for you Waechtersbach!

12 Oh do I have a 1WP story to tell.
Thursday I pointed out to wife a small electric space we have had a wire fraying issue right out of the unit. I said couple days before it would be easy maybe to cut the connection, open it up and shortened the cord. She said it had some kind of security screw to get it opened. Thursday we decided to fix this.
The security screw was one I didn't have on hand. It was a straight slot with a raised bump in the middle.
Getting on small straight slot screwdriver used my Dremel to cut a groove into the blade to get the screws out.
Wasn't putting those back so used my Dremel to grind that bump out making them back to a straight slot regular screw.

16 Just had my last slug of coffee for the day. My mug is at least 25 years old, and I sure do have older ones. I figure I have a lifetime supply.

Time for me to hit the shower, and go outside and mess with cars. I'm not going to try to change over the 3 remaining tires on the white Suburban. Load 'em in the back, drive to Kal Tire, and let them do the mount & balance. They are right at the limit for my little old tire machine, and damned heavy for me to lift. And I cannot fit the 8-lug rims on my little old bubble balancer.

Adult star accused of beheading child's father after having affair with stepson

Las Vegas woman Devyn Michaels was charged with the murder of the father of two of her children following an alleged affair with her stepson.

Jonathan Willette was found beheaded and chemically burned in his Las Vegas home. Prosecution claims that Willette's body was found "defiled" with bleach and ammonia at his residence. His head has never been recovered. Michaels and Willette, both 46, reportedly had a complicated relationship, sharing two young daughters and being on-and-off partners.

Looked around a while but it's too old to donate (one of the early flat screens, about 16-17 years old) and all the recycle electronics places were to far or required driving through Babylon DC traffic to get to. So, I took it to the area where I dispose my trash Monday morning and like magic, it disappeared. I figured if the trash guys didn't take it, I'd drive down I95 and dispose of it at the County trash place. But, they took it! Success!! Now I need to get rid of an ancient VCR, DVD player, old PC's. You do gather a lot of electronic junk. I thought of repurposing the old PC's (make them storage servers or something), but I'm lazy.

85 This week will be the last time I mow and edge the lawns, then it's time to winterize them and change the oil and sharpen the blades on the mower. Need to sand and oil the handles on the other implements of construction/destruction, oil the cedar on the front porch and the back porch. Depending on the time of the day, all of this effort requires either coffee with Jameson's or scotch and cigars.

Kind of OT but when I saw that mug....

So last night I had a weird dream where I took a big swig of coffee and noticed something was wrong: the cup was hugely broken, like with a big shard missing on one side (how I had filled the cup is beyond me) and it was spilling all over me. It was kind of funny but kind of scary in the dream.

I preferred not to ponder its meaning, because it might be a reflection of my outlook on my life at the moment.

So this morning I make a pot of coffee, pour it into a cup, and the coffee is going all over the counter, down the front of the dishwasher, and onto the floor! It turns out the cup had a fatal crack in the bottom that finally gave out with this pouring; when I lifted it up a chunk fell out of the bottom.

So the dream was prophetic? About a stupid broken coffee cup? Dream fairies, do one about the lottery.

Remember when everything was “Made in Japan”

I had an amazing collection of tiny ceramic animals. Don’t know what happened to them.

I still have some beautiful hand painted wooden dolls with silk clothing from Japan. My grandfather was there pre WW II. I have no idea what all the markings mean. If they had left this unresolved long enough to impact the Thnksgiving travel schedule, there might have been an ...uhhh... insurrection!

Apparently some agencies will be funded for a year in the deal, some only through December (meaning another big brouhaha will come right before Christmas), and Democrats get a vote on subsidies being paid to insurance companies. There's speculation here that in addition to losing the #1 (left side) engine the #3 (right side) ingested FOD (crap on the runway, probably from the other engine that fell off) and was in compressor stall before the plane reached V1 (take-off/no go) with only a few seconds for the crew to react. They'd likely not have saved the plane given how fast and far down the runway they were with one working engine.

It didn't help it was loaded with max fuel for a trip to Hawaii either. And one of the buildings it hit was a fuel disposal facility.

175 This commentary is interesting, explaining why it is important to launch early (ie, now) when the trip to Mars actually won't even start until next year. The payload is going to just start of hang out until it slingshots next year.

The reason is that to settle Mars, thousands of rockets will need to transit between earth and Mars within a three month period every two years. Because earth has a limited number of launch pads/windows, companies going to Mars will need to launch all year long, have payloads hang around space, and then transit en masse during the window.

176 I understand the sentimentality of a favorite mug. But, coffee drinking is serious business and should be treated as such.

Pragmatism should outweigh sentiment in this situation. That's why I switched to an insulated mug. However, I purposefully got one that doesn't look like the standard "travel" mug. People who use those are not serious about coffee. They are merely vagabonds.

A good insulated mug will keep coffee hot for nearly 6 hours. This is important, because a regular mug forces you to drink your coffee at a speed decided by the mug. It should be the other way around. And, if you can pace out your consumption you don't drink as much coffee...which is important based on the way I brew it. If the spoon doesn't stand up on its own, the coffee is weak.

Just a wee small bit. Was comparing notes with Vic, he used the AN/PRC-77 squad radio. I've actually unboxed a new one.

He was older than I by about a decade, I'm only a year or two into my third round of being under 29.

178 McDonald Douglas the second most major aircraft manufacturer in USA.
---------------

There's speculation here that in addition to

losing the #1 (left side) engine
the #3 (right side) ingested FOD (crap on the runway, probably from the other engine that fell off) and was in compressor stall before the plane reached V1 (take-off/no go)

with only a few seconds for the crew to react. They'd likely not have saved the plane given how fast and far down the runway they were with one working engine.

It didn't help it was loaded with max fuel for a trip to Hawaii either. And one of the buildings it hit was a fuel disposal facility.

Food is going to be the largest hurdle to overcome in getting a colony started on Mars. Whoever wants to start a colony there will have to ship hundreds of thousands of pounds of food during each launch window towards Mars for decades until enough food can be grown there to support the colonists. It is all pretty much going to have to be freeze dried stuff that lasts 20-25 years. And that is assuming a reliable source of water can be found on the planet.

FedEx, UPS and anyone else flying MD-11's has ceased their operations with those aircraft.

Just in time for the holidays.
Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 09, 2025 03:20 PM (NwnyJ)

There was a similar crash in the late 70's of a DC10 - essentially same aircraft. I knew a guy who worked in M&PE at Douglas at the time. Apparently the clevis that held the front of the engine to the wing was damaged by maintenance being too rough (expedited to save money) reinstalling the engine and it failed..

I wonder if this will be a repeat because the people that knew all retired/got outsourced and the reason forgotten.

182 Lessee... I got my personal coffee mug (stoneware with a nice Japanese-style fish design on it) in about '87, when my buddy moved to the lower 48, and it wasn't new even then.

At least 38 years old, probably more like 45 or 50.

I also got his nice TV (the first color set I ever owned) and his entire liquor collection. He had everything. It me a popular fellow while the supply held out.
