Good reflection on gratitude and how stuff perverts our sense of it. I’ve mentioned this before, the base of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (food, clothing and shelter) are foundational. I think as we progress up and take those things for granted, we tend to lose sight of their importance, get all caught up in desire for more stuff. Junkyards are filled with rusting hulks of garbage that were once people’s dreams. Strange how the more stuff we have, the more we want and mental illness increases. Thankful for every moment and every breath- these are gifts from God.

From Wikipedia:
Following his return to the United States in 1893, Tanner became more racially aware and chose to use artwork including The Thankful Poor as a means of portraying African-American culture in a dignified manner. The painting received praise from critics upon its exhibition in Philadelphia during the spring of 1894, but it is also Tanner's last African-American genre work as the artist began to focus on biblical scenes. After remaining hidden for years, the painting was discovered in a storage closet of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1970, before being purchased by Camille and Bill Cosby in 1981 for their private collection. In 2020, the painting was sold by the Cosbys to Art Bridges, a foundation created by Alice Walton for loaning artwork. The Thankful Poor has been exhibited at the National Museum of African Art, and a preparatory study is held by the DuSable Museum of African American History. The Grateful Poor
Henry Ossawa Tanner I like this painting a lot as it's sweet and well done, depicting intergenerational kinship. Art Bridges Foundation org: In part, Quiet and domestic, the scene depicted in The Thankful Poor suggests a spiritual moment between a young boy and an elderly man. Artist Henry Ossawa Tanner, born to a religious family, often channeled this sense of piety in his paintings over the span of his career. Later recognized for his biblical paintings, Tanner first produced genre scenes of Black American life near the turn of the 20th century. The Thankful Poor is the last known of these works. The decision to depict Black daily life became clear to the artist during his studies between Paris and Philadelphia, where he was academically trained. While Black subjects appeared in the works of white American artists, such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, Tanner distinctly prioritized the humanity of his figures. (More) -- And like Nurse, above, almost every day, we also turned off the TV, said grace, ate together and talked. It helped keep the kids mostly in tow. Thanks. So similar to the Steen painting. Same approach, several centuries later, of family being grateful and appreciative for what they have. A calm scene using natural light to bring out the soft shadows and bright, well cared for dinnerware. Like the Steen painting, there is a sense of continuation through a child, in this case a grandfather and grandson. It's a pleasant motif. While this uses a black family, it could easily be a white one. It wouldn't change the message.
The color scheme and brush work reminds me of Andrew Wyeth. Nothing startling but a gentle combination of similar colors, light gray to soft white and few sharp contrasts. Posted by: JTB at November 11, 2025 10:08 AM (yTvNw) 103

The insurance bit made me think of something as well.
I buy warranties for used cars. They’ve always been profitable for me.** I could have the work down at an Indy mechanic or the dealer. I don’t pay for it so dealer it is at twice the cost. Not that they necessarily do a better job but when it’s time to sell the car buyers get wet and bothered if they see the car is dealer maintained. But it’s part of why dealers get away with charging so much. When the end user doesn’t pay, they can charge whatever they want. ** most plans are rip offs. There are two companies that provide exclusionary polices and back them up. If you get one of those and drive an expensive to fix car you’re usually going to end up in the black. It’s the Doug DeMuro gambit. Any German or his forbid British car is almost guaranteed to come out ahead with the plan. I had one plan pay about $25k worth of repairs in 3 years. These plans are kind of loss leaders for the companies I think. The real money is from non-exclusionary contracts which never pay for anything. 139- your comment and Nurse’s hit home. I spent years trying to make someone happy with stuff. “I’d be happy if I had an rv, a lot in the blue ridge mountains, a vacation home” But nothing made her happy, because you choose happiness (internal locus of control) choosing to be grateful, to literally count your blessings is a huge part of that. That’s why despair is a sin, because it’s evidence for a lack of gratitude for all you have. And it leads to discarding things of real value, as Nurse notes. It’s the classic Faustian bargain, trading your soul and the real gifts of life for ephemeral trash.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing ======= MP4, Saw your book thread post, and came up with a possible promotion technique. Was watching Rick Beato and he mentioned that record labels are now using the number of social media followers as a measure of whether to sign an act. You might try TikTok (which can also be ported to YT shorts) short form 1-2 minute videos that highlight learned commentary on silent films, that in turn allows you to market your books. Pop out one or two per week and see what happens and interact with the commenters on the videos. Build enough followers for your niche, then you might be able to leverage that into being signed by a press. The longer form YT videos, 10-15 minutes usually, like TJM is trying out take a lot more time and effort and aiming at the yute market who prefer shorts might be a new and novel way to cheaply market and create a market for your books. Moving is a great way to get rid of stuff. It’s amazing how much junk one accumulates over the years. My rule last couple of moves was if I hadn’t used it in a year, to the ”throw away” pile it went.
The last move was so easy. Only the essentials moved and it wasn’t a lot. When I moved to the Nashville area I got rid of trucks full of junk. Spent a fortune having a junk service haul it all away but it was worth it. Posted by: Tuna at November 11, 2025 10:44 AM (lJ0H4) 199

Posted by: It's me donna Agreed. Posted by: Bulg ======= I have several thousand books left from a lifetime of accumulation but in a lot of cases, I have no desire to reread what I have read and simply kept them from sloth and the vague intentions that I might reread them or need them for some research project. With increasing disabilities, I find paper books harder and harder to deal with for some tasks and for research purposes, often an electronic search is far quicker than a poorly indexed work. It also helps that Ebooks allow minimal gross movements to flip pages and the paperwhite Kindles are actually pretty decent about being able to alter text size, etc. I did download the several hundred ebooks before Kindle closed the door on possessing your own books this year just in case and I have an old Kindle capable of dealing with those if I need it. Print has a charm and connection to me for some books but a lot of mine are utilitarian in nature and detritus of an academic career. IMHO, organized religion ruined Christianity. Even in the time of Paul, churches were autonomous. But yet they flourished without a set ritualistic dogma.
Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons ========= Any organization has its own imperatives such as setting boundaries as to who belongs and who doesn't, what shall be taught, etc. and once you have professionals, good works, and buildings, then how to raise funds for them in a systematic way. And you have to have an authoritative voice to prevent heresies from cropping up as most of the earliest church fathers were either apostles, taught by apostles, and knew people that were actually present for many of the events. It is not a surprise that after living memory of generations faded of the time of Christ, that heresies began to bloom such as Arius. Always tickled me that St. Nicholas, yeah, that guy, was reputed to have bopped Arius on his head for heresy promotion during the Nicean Conference. FWIW, the basilica foundations that may have held that Nicean conference has recently emerged from a lake in Turkey due to dropping water levels. 78 Good reflection on gratitude and how stuff perverts our sense of it.
