>>>Denmark plans to ban social media for children under 15. (AP News)
Many social media platforms have for years banned anyone 13 or under from signing up for their services. TikTok users can verify their ages by submitting a selfie that will be analyzed to estimate their age. Meta Platforms, parent of Instagram and Facebook, says it uses a similar system for video selfies and AI to help figure out a user’s age. Teens and pre-teens uploading selfies to mega-corps seems ripe for abuse. Evening and morning to you all upon the dusk or dawn of the second Saturn's Day in November!
Holmes's good and faithful friend, and chronicler, was John H. (for Hamish) Watson. But it is remarkable that both the IBM guy and the DNA guy should have the same name. "He was 173." We *should* be able to live to 200 or so, darnit! The Movies! Channel has 1953's The Desert Rats on at 5 Central. This comes from the period where Richard Burton could have played James Bond very effectively. Imagine the young, energetic RB in a faithful adaptation of Live and Let Die or Moonraker!
The movie also features James Mason playing Rommel, and a featured role for Robert Newton -- the originator of what people today call "Talk Like a Pirate." He used the Cornwall/West Country dialect he'd grown up with for his role as Long John Silver in Disney's Treasure Island[/i, and it caught on. Aerosmith
Honkin' on Bobo (2004) Baby Please Don't Go https://youtu.be/9r25eLFBAc4 This album is blues and rock n' roll covers and is my favorite Aerosmith opus. I find that covers give me a reference about the musicality of a band. One example is a Springsteen show I saw some years ago. I barely can recall the regular set but the 45 minute encore is still fresh in my mind; that E Street band was a thang at its peak. Honkin' on Bobo gets to that same place. As is the custom of our church, they request all members who are veterans to wear their uniform to church tomorrow. As I have not worn my Dress Blues since 2010, there has been a slight scramble at stately VIA Manor to insure that tomorrow I may wear my uniform with the pride and dignity that it deserves. And the post Halloween candy snacking has put me right at the edge of ten pounds of VIA stuffed into five pound pants. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at November 08, 2025 05:54 AM (a1415) 40

I never heard Jim Watson speak in person. I did hear Francis Crick do so, and Alexander Rich. Dr. Watson was a prickly character, by all accounts. I have a relatively well known distant relative at the third or fourth cousin level -- now deceased -- who, by all accounts sounded like a severe and unpleasant person / scientist with a decided liking for the works of Planned Parenthood. I never sought to contact him. Miss Linda and I went out to the new Coldstone Creamery location in a suburb near us. $7.50 for a mid-size cup of ice cream is getting pretty ridiculous . . . but Haagen-Dasz charges close to the same, and it is a big double scoop. We ended up bringing half of our portions home and sticking them in the freezer "for later."
Baskin-Robbins is a bit cheaper, but the ice cream is less rich, though the portion size is about the same. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 08, 2025 06:10 AM (wzUl9) Posted by: m at November 08, 2025 06:10 AM (RuTUS) 47

Pope on tech:
Daniel retweeted @growing_daniel Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex 22h Technological innovation can be a form of participation in the divine act of creation. I was thinking of buying a good monitor for myself.
MSI makes a very interesting 27” 4K Mini-LED display with 1152 dimming zones that competes with OLED on everything except the natural 1million:1 contrast ratio but at about half the price for the same resolution. The Mini-LED actually gets a lot brighter than OLED with HDR Display1000, whereas OLEDs are usually topping out at Display400. To get even close to the same price I’d have to get a 1440p OLED and still pay $100+ extra for less screen real estate. I wish there were more choices in Mini-LED monitors. As it is right now there are only a handful of models being made by three or four companies compared to dozens of OLEDs by several manufacturers. I don't generally watch tucker, or Candace or definitely not Fuentes. I saw a clip of Tucker ,who alleges Israelis are killing Palestinian Christians , baffled by why people are arguing and calling attention to the murder of Christians in Nigeria. I have a feeling the fix is in with the Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs. The temptation to break Trump's balls and dismantle his entire economic premise in one fell blow is simply too irresistible. Roberts knows this and he'll bring along his little acolyte Coney-Barrett with him.

For us the only problem with the shutdown is flying at Thanksgiving since we hope to spend the holiday with family. If the 10% cuts to flights continue and ramp up we will most likely have to drive since our flights will be impacted. We start our journey from a small airport and on to a major hub to finish up. MT to OH is just shy of 2000 miles over 3 days. I'm getting a bit old for that drive, however we'll try to make it work.

"Send out the fast baller!" Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars(TM) - what makes you think you are in charge? at November 08, 2025 07:16 AM (xG4kz) I liked those films, too. It was a different take on Holmes, especially with the way they showed Holmes' thought patterns as he's figuring things out or boxing, etc. Had some great humor. And, yes, Jude Law's Watson was a lot more interesting than the usual portrayal of Watson as a kindly, but bumbling, old fool, like he was in Basil Rathbone's turn as Sherlock in those films. Hollywood could make a very cool kid's mystery show if they'd just try to get the rights to one character, and the books he appeared in, "Encyclopedia Brown".
He was kinda like a kid version of Sherlock Holmes. I read every one of those books I could get my hands on as a kid in the 80s and I've always wondered why they never tried to turn into a cartoon or series on TV. I guess the character and books never got popular enough, but that's what turned me on to reading Sherlock Holmes when I was a pre-teen/teen. And then If find out HBO made an Encyclopedia Brown TV series in the late 80s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopedia_Brown Completely missed that one! Which is understandable as it only ran for eight episodes. But I was already driving by then and had no time to read children's books or watch kids shows. I'd like to check it out of it's streaming or on DVD. Film In June 2013, Warner Bros. optioned the Encyclopedia Brown books into a feature film. Matt Johnson was in talks to write the movie. Roy Lee and Howard David Deutsch (producer of the 1989 Encyclopedia Brown TV series) and Jonathan Zakin were announced as producing. 12 years in development hell is not a good sign.
