Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 12, 2025 [Anniversarius Rex]

"Sir, are you aware that tonight is the first anniversary of TRex doing the Wednesday ONT?"

20251102-20251028_090848.jpg

As Weasel might say, "Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell has it been a year of TRex doing the Wednesday ONT?!"

Holy Shitballs indeed. Thank you, Horde.

***

Good evening. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the mostly peaceful Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb odds, ends, and mystery clicks. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Prepare your puns and fire at will. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Pants are optional!

***

I wanted to get a gift for the Horde for the occasion. Other than music, movies, food, bewbs and guns, what does the Horde like most? My gift to you:

20251028-groan.jpg

20251028-mandarin.jpg

It was hard getting over my addiction to the Hokey Pokey.
But I've turned myself around and that’s what it's all about.

I was so confused last night as my printer started playing music
Turns out the paper was just jamming.

Not all math puns are funny.
Just sum.

What do you call a girl standing in the middle of a tennis court?
Annette.

Breaking (broken?) news: After 208 years, The Farmers Almanac will stop publishing. The last edition will be the 2026 annual (on sale now). Access to digital content will end after December 2025.

This decision, though difficult, reflects the growing financial challenges of producing and distributing the Almanac in today's chaotic media environment. "We are incredibly proud of the legacy we leave behind and grateful to our loyal staff, readers, contributors, and partners who have supported us through the years," Duncan added. "Though the Almanac will no longer be available in print or online, its spirit will live on in the values it championed: simplicity, sustainability, and connection to nature."

***

You may be cool, but are you "I jumped an F-14 Tomcat off a ski jump" cool?

20251107-F14.jpg

This is not AI. The F-14 did 28 test launches off a 9-degree "ski jump" at NAS Patuxent River in 1982. The ramp was part of a Navy program to test the feasibility of a potential new class of carrier with a short flight deck and no catapults. The idea was abandoned because of the weight penalty from the undercarriage strengthening that would have been required.

I know what you're thinking. Fine for the F-14, but no ski jumps for the F-18, right?

I know what you're thinking. Fine for the F-14 and F-18, but no modern jets get jumped off a ski jump, right?

Now you know. Or if you knew, you've been reminded.

On this the day after Veterans Day, we pause a moment to remember at the TRexes that served their country.

Today was the last day of US penny production for ordinary circulation, ending 232 years of production. The Philadelphia Mint struck the final penny earlier today. The cost of making a penny is currently 3.69 cents per penny. The penny remains legal tender, so you can still protest pay your parking tickets in buckets of pennies.

The Mint will still make limited quantities for collectors and "historical" purposes, so the "final" really isn't the "final, final." Kind of like seeing the Eagles, Kiss or Motley Crue in concert...

***

I know what you're thinking. "I need some different decorations for Christmas this year." I've got just the answer - a seven and a half foot tall animated Wookie. Only $349 at the big orange home improvement store.

20251110-Wookie.jpg

I know what you're thinking. "That's a bit spendy. How about something just as festive, but not as expensive?" I've got two answers for you - a seven foot tall Darth Vader or a 6 foot tall Stormtrooper. Only $299 at the same big orange box store!

20251110-Darth.jpg

20251110-Stormtrooper.jpg

I know what you're thinking. "Those are great, but I don't have much room and I'm dreaming of a droid Christmas." I've got just the thing for you - a three and a half foot tall R2-D2 for the same price.

20251110-R2D2.jpg

Never mind. R2-D2 is out of stock.

Bah. Just get the seven foot tall inflatable dino wearing sunglasses playing the guitar. $66 and done. Much easier and as God and Santa intended.

In the last Club ONT, we learned that people like lettuce, guacamole, bacon and tomato sammiches...

Small town life has a lot of great things to offer.

A few months ago we went to the DMV to renew our licenses. There was a young woman there with her mother. She was there to get her first driver's license. She and the DMV employee went outside so she could take the driving test. Everyone was rooting for her.

When she came back in she was grinning and everyone there stood up and applauded her.

Abortion was illegal long before the 19th Amendment. Many suffragettes were pro-abortion and pro-birth control.

This feels like blaming men for the poor choices of women.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at

This is absolutely not true. In fact, the birth control advocates were very frustrated with how conservative the suffragettes were. The suffragettes actively avoided birth control discussions, they did not want the two things combined. Most suffragettes were fine with the current thoughts around marriage, to include submitting to their husbands. Sanger was not a Suffragette.

94 I'm thinking about buying my husband some leather chaps for Christmas. Mostly to see what he does as he's never ridden a horse or been a cowboy (ok, he did help with the cattle when we were first married).

Do I look up chaps and AI then messes with me endlessly?

This came up today because as he left for his lunch...and, yes, I offer to make him a sandwich...I told him he looked Western today. We live in the West and I said he needs a cowboy hat and boots. He brought up the chaps, which is where I got the idea.

Since NSA is reading this with AI I will probably get chaps mentioned on Pinterest now when I look. He was shopping for a new chair recently and leather chairs appeared on MY Pinterest. You can no longer have private talks about chaps or anything in life.

Yeah, I’m sure Sanger was against the 19th Amendment. Very plausible!
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director

Sanger fled to Europe because she was afraid she would be prosecuted for violating the Comstock Act, Mary Ware Dennett was at the center of the Suffragette movement. When Sanger came back, Dennett put a lot of space between her and Sanger because of Sanger’s violating the law, and Sanger being a disgusting human being. Sanger asked for Dennett’s support for the National birth control League. Dennett said nope, not gonna do it! I am not suggesting Sanger didn’t want women to vote, I am saying she was not part of the suffragette movement. She had her own crazy thing going.

The Great Book of Modern Warplanes, 1987 edition on pg. 601.

Caption reads - An F-14 attached to the Naval Air test center at Patuxent River goes off the ski ramp. While it would appear to have little application for carrier operations other than vertical-landing aircraft such as the Harrier, the ski jump, which can be erected in just two hours, seems to have possibilities when used to assist short takeoffs from a damaged airfield.

193 77 Also, the Christmas Wookie reminds me of the infamous "Star Wars Holiday Special", a copy of which, recorded off a broadcast in Baltimore and complete with MST3K wisecracks, I proudly own.

The show is astonishingly bad. Think of the worst TV show you've ever seen. Then imagine that that show had been scripted and directed by Kathleen Kennedy. That show would STILL be better than "The Star Wars Holiday Special"!
========
I really llked the Holiday special when the family watched it on its one and only broadcast airing back in the day. Hey, it was 1978, I was young, all things Star Wars were cool then. Watched it again 20 years later....it hadn't aged well at all... Mark Hamill trying to emote with half of his face stapled on, carrie Fisher high as a kite, Harrison Ford acting like his family was being held at gunpoint, pervy Uncle Lumpy.... When an appearance by Jefferson Starship can't save it, or even the first appearance of Boba Fett couldn't save it.

The Rifftrax version of it really kicked butt though!!

Are you talking about the Moskva that the Ukrainians sunk a few years ago? Yes that happened. The Moskva was a shitshow, poorly maintained Soviet holdover that had systems that didn't interoperate well. It's suspected that their air defense radar was turned off at the time of the attack due to it causing interference with some other system.

The carrier Admiral Kuznetzov is in dry dock and will probably stay there until it is scrapped. Another crappy Soviet holdover. They disembarked the crew and sent them to the front lines IIRC.

Slid them off the trailer, stood them up on the ground, long axis vertical, and walked them a few yard across the grass, and up a ramp into the shop, and then slid them sideways a couple of yards on the smooth concrete floor to lean them up against the wall. Never had to lift the full weight of one of them.

Seeing as how he's never ridden a horse in his life due to Disneyland trauma when he was 4yrs old, I am not spending a lot. I may look for a good cowboy hat to keep his little bald spot warm this winter instead. I think that will do the trick (for me).

His brother's burro at Disneyland pooped on his burro's head and he's never been the same regarding horses.

He did not ride horses when he could on our cattle farm, or be led around like our sons. I can ride, not gracefully at full gallop, but we had horses. I know enough that during Mad Maxx world ending I can saddle and ride for our grub at ye olde trading post. He can deal with the chickens as they are one of my childhood phobias after being pecked and then an insane rooster who chased my brother and me daily.

Otherwise he's perfectly normal!

When I did the sheetrock at my place in AZ, I made a panel toter. Strip of plywood 15" by 4 feet. Screw and glue a 15" piece of 1X2 across one end, and screw and glue a short 3" piece of plywood to the other edge of the 1X2. Finished toter, seen edge-on, looks like an elongated letter "J". Cut a hand-size hole in the main piece of plywood about an arm's length down from the top. Takes 5 minutes to make using scraps to be found around your construction site. To use it, stand panel of sheetrock upright on its long edge. Lift one end, slide the J-hook under it until you reach the middle. Grab the hole, and lift the whole thing like it were a piece of heavy luggage.

Yes and no. If you look on their silver for sale pages on Apmex and SDBullion, most of them are marked "Notify me when this is available", instead of listing prices. My local coin shop was down to maybe 30 oz last week - no Silver Eagles or Maple Leafs available at all, they couldn't even order any, the mints aren't shipping, and all of the silver being refined by smelters is being shipped to the Comex and London exchanges to cover the huge short positions the banks are in. 100 Oz bars are not available anywhere.

I am not a metals trader but: In normal times spot is lower than futures costs because the futures cost has to include the cost of the metal, and the opportunity cost lost for not getting physical delivery until later - so most traders buy and sell futures without actually touching the metal and take their money back with that bit of extra as profit for putting up the money in the first place.
When suddenly everyone wants metal in their hands, and there is a sudden feeling that no one who has been selling futures actually has the silver on hand to deliver, then the future opportunity cost is reversed because it is no longer the opportunity cost that is important, but the risk of default is suddenly a risk, so the spot price is higher than the futures cost

Something that blew my mind about isostatic adjustment. At first blush, you'd think moving water closer to the poles as ice sheets would be moving mass closer to the poles, ergo, moment of inertia would be less, earth would speed up a smidge. Thus cold earth = fast earth, and hot earth = slow earth.

In fact, it's just the opposite in the long term equilibrium. Earth with ice sheets has a higher moment of inertia than an ice free earth! And ice age earth is more oblate than an ice-free earth.

In fact the isostatic rebound from the last ice age end is still ongoing and countering the tidal braking of the Moon on earth's rotation. Earth is, long term, slowing down, but not as fast as it would be by tidal braking alone. (short term, it's been speeding up relatively big time, which I've rambled about).

From memory (which is dangerous) - MSFT IPOd at $21 per share. I don't think they raised more than $60m in total (after underwriting fees).

The other nugget of history is that Bill Gates wanted to keep MSFT private, but the employee equity program was so expansive that it was approaching 500 owners. Once a company has more than 500 owners, SEC rules required public company registration.

339 Publius, I have this personal theory that the South American Glaciation blocked the Drake Passage, and so broke up the circumpolar current, allowing South America to be far warmer than it should have been. It also would have been one of the greater sources of water in the freshwater pulse. When the the Laurentide glaciers started melting the rising ocean levels would have floated the Drake Passage sheet off the sea bed where it was grounded, and allowed it to break up and melt as it washed into the Atlantic.
It might answer what caused the meltwater pulses during the end of the Younger Dryas

364 Weird, but I don't seem to generate a lot of scrap copper, and I go through a fuck ton of wire in a year. I do maybe 12 complete custom wiring harnesses on harleys in a year, and a lot of partial harness repairs. I use a single piece of wire as a kind of ruler to measure each run before it all gets shrink tube, and I only end up cutting a few inches off during hook ups to all the components. I usually toss it in a small box and pieces get used up during the year for little shit like jumpers, or small extensions. Same deal with house wire. I work off the roll of wire with very little waste. It would take forever for me to generate enough copper for it to be worth a shit.

I don't pretend to be smart enough to play the markets at the individual-stock level. I just buy mutual funds. S&P 500 tracker, mostly. I joke about buying the "Nancy Pelosi's stock picks" fund, but never have.

No, I don't get to buy mid-size Caribbean islands when my penny stocks hit $12,000. But I also don't have to sell my beanie-baby collection when they go bust.

394 mikeski, I've found I enjoy Moody Blues' Days Of Future Passed a lot. As I get older, I appreciate the non-hit tracks more.

Was reading yesterday about Patrick Moraz of the Moody Blues. He was with the band for over a decade, gave them their 1980s synth sound, years later complained they didn't challenge him anymore in an interview article in about 1990, then found himself unceremoniously fired.

He sued the rest of the band, claiming there was an 'oral agreement' he was a full member, not just a 'hired sideman' as the others claimed. At one point, the Moodies offered him $400k to settle. Moraz refused and wanted to go to court in California.

He did, and got a verdict... for less than $100k. Oops.

I can make a good case that Who’s Next established the stadium rock sound that dominated rock for the next decade.

426 Lou Rawls used to make a habit of talking through intros of his songs. It was popular enough for a while that other artists did it.

One of my all time favorite Motown songs is Jimmy Ruffin, "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted." The label deleted it, but there was supposed to be a spoken-word intro on it. It was restored in a later remaster in the 1990s.

441 Perfect albums? I'd agree with "Joshua Tree" by U2; "Rattle and Hum" comes pretty close as well. I also loved the Fine Young Cannibals' self-titled debut, and thought it was much better than the follow up of "The Raw and the Cooked." And I'll throw in Harry Connick Jr.'s "Lofty's Roach Soufflé." But it's been well over two decades since I bought an album / cassette tape / CD or downloaded a full album. I usually just pull up YouTube, type in a song that fits the mood, and the algorithm brings me some music.

Actually, by the time The boston album hit I was probably playing around 8 years, so I was more than developed enough to play a lot of that album. The major thing I learned from boston was guitar harmonies. I had these 2 little cassette player/recorders. I would play the rhythm on one, play it back, and play one part of the harmony over it while recording it on the second tape player. Now I could work out the second part of the harmony by playing along with the 1st part. Once I had it I would play along with it and again record it with the other player. By the time I was done I had all the guitar parts recorded. After a while I was hearing all the parts in my head and could separate them on the fly. that was a major skill to have, because when metal hit big band like iron maiden and judas priest were doing it a lot, and I never struggled with it because of what I learned with boston.

469 Kansas Left Overture...all of it as best album

My husband came upstairs and asked where I was vs my normal perch reading in bed. I was in our walk-in closet which faces north. A round window that I call my spy window.

He is laughing and asks why the top of a shoebox is on the window: to block light from the neighbors as I take photos, which I hope will, by some miracle, show color. He said that is very scientific and we both laughed. I took more damn photos that showed nothing but white clouds and a deep blue sky. The clouds are now breaking up (of course they are as it is over).

He claims that the "sun is more active" and maybe I will someday have another chance. To be caught in the dark longing for red/green is rather pathetic and I will go to bed. Glad for other people who saw it (no you are not).
