250 Sydney Sweeney on Life at the Center of the Conversation

GQ sits in on a tête-à-tête between Men of the Year cover star Sydney Sweeney and GQ features director Katherine Stoeffel at the Chateau Marmont. Sweeney opens up about her year in the spotlight: from her thoughts on the American Eagle ad and the backlash it received, to her dramatic body transformation and the public perception that comes with that.

15 You could always just fill up that space with rocks, Pixy.

I don’t know how popular landscaping pebbles are in Australia but they’re all the rage in the Southwest where water can be scarce.

I’d do it here if I could get away with it, but I think the HOA would not approve.

Rocks are even more expensive. Australia has very few of them, being made up primarily of a layer of topsoil over a deep reservoir of custard. So they have to import rocks for the most part.

In theory, a state of being overweight can be reversed. Smoking damage can't.

Posted by: m at November 07, 2025 05:17 AM (RuTUS)

36 from the ONT, context for tcn's cited comment:

248 Why do we take up smoking? Because, in college, it was cheaper than buying food and meant a remained skinny and attractive. $0.79 a pack, and no need for breakfast or lunch.

Of course, when I had the boy, no more smoking. Food again reared its ugly head. To the detriment of my waistline. So be it.

So, smoking or diabetes. For those of us with an oral fixation, it's one or the other. Until they solve that problem, we will die of one or the other. Not sure which is worse, but I'd rather die of a heart attack than suffocate to death. So, there's that.

52 After more than 200 years, the 2026 edition of the Farmers' Almanac will be the last.

Might have something to do with how the smaller family farms started disappearing in favour of the large-scale corporation-run farming operations. Those small-scale farmers were the Almanac's main customers.

I used to buy my grandfather a Farmer's Almanac for Christmas every year when I was a child, and he loved reading through it and referring to it.

I think I'll buy one of the 2026 copies as a keepsake.

I've seen the Farmer's Almanac at the grocery pretty much all my life. I'll grab a copy of the '26 before they're gone. The article didn't say why they were shutting down. Low sales, I guess, and people getting all their "advice" from web sites?

Whether you like Latin music or not, I think you have to admire the sheer musical talent Gloria and her band display in this video. Horns, guitar, bongos, and Gloria's own rapid-fire handling of the lyrics in a super-fast-paced tune are all spectacular.

Fortunately, I no longer have to drive that way every day. But when I am on that side of the river, it'll be a hassle to mount up to the bridge at another point. And the traffic will be even worse than usual.

78 Farmers Almanac used to be a sometimes Christmas stocking stuffer - mostly for the articles as I remember rather than the weather predictions I suspect.

Interesting history, when young it used to be a small niche publication, then in 1816(?) when the owner was out sick a typesetter worker - as a prank - predicted freezing temps and snow in July. That mistakenly made it into the published edition. The owner recalled most of the copies, but then a strange coincidence occurred - a major volcanic eruption precipitated global cooling worldwide and the US actually saw out-of-season freezing temps and snow in July.

The owner rode the publicity from that fiasco to have his publication become a must-have for farmers - this at a time well before meteorologists could accurately predict the weather.

84 DG is decomposed granite, or pulverized granitic fines that make a sand like base for the walkway. It gets bounded with a metal border. When its laid down and compressed with a roller it forms a rock solid, stable and water permeable surface. Cobblestone goes on either side and the chopped block forms the border between the cobblestone and the wall exterior wall of the house. The space in between gets filled with the Mexican beach pebbles. In the spring we'll plant cast iron plants and blue oat grass. Not xeriscape but certainly low water and low maintenance.

Her Majesty and I were coordinating the 2004 Borzoi Club of America National Specialty in King's Island. We wanted to have the show outdoors.

Came the week of the show. It started raining Monday afternoon and didn't end until Saturday.

98 Draconian prosecutorial discretion is probably far more damaging to civilization and society than draconian prosecution.

Sure, a little flexibility and common sense is necessary in enforcing any law or regulation. But wholesale abandonment of the law, in this case vagrancy, creates even bigger problems. Immigration. Election laws. Pharmaceutical regulations. It's everywhere you look. "We decided we don't like this law so we're just going to ignore it." Bad juju.

This refers to the belief that there are better and worse times to plant, or harvest, crops based on phases of the Moon. Not that you’re out dropping wheat berries into holes in the ground by moonlight, but that the phase of the moon has an effect.

Also claims that trees should be cut or fenceposts should be set during certain phase periods, even pouring cement, things like that. I won’t discount it entirely, those old timers was smart.
