Hamburgers, hot dogs - but controversial, falafel, wraps, gyros, burritos, tacos, Philly Cheesesteaks and a bunch of other things technically qualify as sandwiches. Interesting. Changed the alternator on the small car today. Squeaky bearing, didn't want it to freeze up and trash the belt.
I go off to the YouTube to find out how to check it. Found out. You want to know why car batteries fail? Car alternators. Now, I can understand the economics involved; most batteries are done in by, basically, neglect, and we couldn't do much better, reliably, in past history, but today, we can do better. Under steady state conditions -not cranking, not recovering from starter discharge, an alternator is considered to be good if it's putting anywhere from 14.2 to 14.7 VDC at the battery. The old landline phone systems ran off -48 VDC, supplied by huge wet-cell lead-acid batteries. They were never boiled at >14V. They were floated, most of the time, between 13.2 and 13.5V. Designed for, and expected to last 30 years. There were some tricks: equalization cycles, regular distilled water checks and additions, but that 30 years was a minimum. It was not unusual for a CO battery bank to last more than 50 years. We can build chargers to handle lithium-ion batteries, which are much touched about charging, surely we can control an alternator a little tighter and better. This is an ongoing thing. I once asked if a snake started consuming its own tail and didn't have any digestive glands, would eventually disappear? It was early one, and it said, conceivably yes, it would disappear (which is nonsense). I finally ended the conversation by stating that if I kept dividing by 2 the division would continue into infinity, just get smaller by half each time. Are snakes immune to this mathematics theory. It never responded.
Posted by: Orson at November 08, 2025 11:32 PM (dIske) The snake deal is more analogous to the limit on folding paper. Eventually you reach a point where the material itself cannot sustain the force required to double it. Eventually, the snake would be coiled so tightly that all its spinal joints were at their fullest limit of extension, and try as it might, it could bend no further. It’s heat, and vibration, that kills batteries generally speaking. “Batteries die in July, they just don’t keel over till January”. Or the first cold snap anyway.
The 12 volt system battery debuted in 1956, since that time they’ve been hanging more and more stuff off it, demanding more. Particularly bad are the “phantom loads” that place a small draw on a constant basis. Security systems, and various black boxes that don’t shut down right a way even when working right. Lead acid chemistry charging was hashed out a hundred years ago. A good old “dumb” charger is still the best bang for the buck. The 6/2 amp charger made by the gazillions by Schumacher. Have to monitor the voltage, or use a timer. But they will do a better job. The key is to understand that battery charge voltages are temperature dependent, a correction factor applies. Without a temperature compensated charger, it will generally be under or over charged (as in a car). 14.7 isn’t even a float charge when it gets cold enough, and it’s way too much in hot weather, plus sitting next to a hot engine. i always thought they should he in clear plastic, as a visual to see sulfation. My favorite “base tradition” was reading about newly installed Curtis LeMay getting SAC up to speed. He went to one of his desk jockies and said “10 am tomorrow flight line”. They took off at 10 am and diverted somewhere else unannounced. Upon landing he asks to see the Wing commander, who arrives in a golf shirt.
“Execute the War Plan” is all he says. (This means flying to Europe and dropping nukes) Complete chaos ensues. He never held too many after action reviews in one sense, everyone else saw the debacle and got their $&it together. Word gets around. Yes, trivia aside, my point here is that the 12 volt battery is fairly inadequate for modern cars and trucks with all the gizmos and gee gaws on it. A/C, high output stereos window heaters, seat heaters, the list is endless.
Starting batteries are constructed in such a way they are designed to provide short bursts of high amps for a split second - many thin plates with a high surface area. Their only purpose is to start the engine, that’s it. They do provide a bit of a buffer for spikes and sags, but the engine generator or alternator is intended to carry the load. They do not “like” being discharged down very much. A modern car or truck battery is almost always in a somewhat partial state of discharge, and this builds up a sulfation that becomes permanent. They talked about 24 or 36 volt systems for years but it hasn’t happened yet. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 12:27 AM (+Oqoq) 237

Stationary batteries, lead-acid types used for phone co. would last about 30 years from what I’ve read. They probably didn’t use starting batteries, something more like a deep cycle. Automotive start batteries are more prone to plate breakage (due to shock and vibration).
I am having a little trouble keeping the RV battery up to snuff. It’s a little undersized, and the RV charger isn’t really intended for boondocking. Partial discharges and recharges work OK for a deep cycle battery for a while, maybe a week or so, but under heavy use sooner or later it will choke, and needs to be fully recharged and equalized. Even under ordinary circumstances 120% of a charge needs to be returned to get back to 100%, and 30% of the ampere capacity is in that last 90% to 100% fully charged status. What I really need is a 25 amp old school charger. I’ve never seen one that big, except in those big rollout chargers with engine start capability. What does work really great, is using a Variac and the old 2/6 Schumacher. It’s a DIY variable DC supply this way. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 12:51 AM (+Oqoq) 253

I also have a 5 amp charger run off a Variac, and that is my go-to bench charger. I have one of those little plastic "charger-rejuvenators" with the flashing LEDs, but I think it has become partly crippled, and I don't trust it anymore. worked great when it was new, though. And I have a bunch of 2 amp to 10 amp chargers, too. I have one big old one that used an autotransformer and a Tungar bulb rectifier, that I put a silicon diode bridge into, which can charge 36 volt golf cart battery banks if put to that task. There is a difference between cranking batteries and deep-cycle batteries, and standby batteries that are meant to be kept on float their entire life.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ----- Crank & deep cycle, yes, but those CO batteries were pulled off float almost every day. The ac/dc converters were sized to carry the load except for high usage times. Then the batteries picked up the load. Not as fast a discharge as cranking, but as deep. The high power dump that auto alternatives do is because the battery may well have to start the car again, after a 5 minute run to the liquor store. My complaint is that they could (today) be fairly easily designed to run the high power to recharge, but then drop back to high float, instead of pumping unneeded current at almost 15V, which just turns into heat and lost electrolyte. Every department store, and hardware store, and auto parts store had their own brand, usually made by one of a half-dozen or so manufacturers. Back when I could scavenge at the dump, i would snag one or two every year, replace the old selenium rectifiers with silicon diode bridges, and they'd be better than new. Right, AOP. But I’m running charging ops off a generator. I don’t need engine start capability. But I need to move amps sometimes. The refrigerator draws 10 amps, not continuous duty, although damn close it seems like in the summer.
Figure 10 amps times 5 hours that’s a half dead deep cycle. Daily. The RV battery does a half assed job. It is a “smart” charger, and can supposedly discern a lithium vs. lead acid automagically. But it is voltage limited to under 14 volts. So it will bulk charge to about 60% and then roll over. I’m sure it will charge up to 100% in a couple days. But for boondocking, running a gennie, that doesn’t work too well. Burning gas, making noise, not doing shit, basically. My 2008 Suburban has two batteries, a main cranking battery, and an auxiliary battery, connected with maybe #6 wire. I replaced the auxiliary last year, as it shorted, and drained down the main battery. That one was in the car when I bought in 2011, and has never been changed. Odds are good it is an OEM battery. It will run and drive on the main battery alone. You have your wish, kinda.
Some of the modern luxury cars especially, you can’t just buy a new battery and drop it in. You’ll need a scanner to update. A new battery has a different charge profile than an old one, and you need to let the car know it’s a new battery. They also put them in the trunk, or away from all the engine heat anyway. If you watch how the old school taper chargers work, the engineers was smart. They “sized” the transformer for the standard car battery. They are fucking perfect, yes they are unregulated, if you forget about it and leave it connected, it will eventually boil out a battery. Maybe. Check out the temperature compensation chart for voltages sometime. If it’s zero, 14.7 ain’t enough. Not even close. And it takes a lot longer, due to high internal resistance. Outgassing is normal, and required, part of charging. It needs to be minimized though. If you live in Saskatoon or something like that, in a cold snap, you couldn’t overcharge if you tried. My “smart” Schumacher charger will not work at all in cold weather, the microswitches. Have to warm it up first. How fucked up is that? The switches don’t work very well in warm weather either. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 01:09 AM (dBJdm) Sounds like a big solar panel would be a good fit for your setup. Some manufacturer should come out with a "boondockers" genset with a condensing Rankine cycle engine running a generator. Rankine cycle is a steam engine. Maybe use Freon or ammonia as a working fluid; there are other possibilities. But it's closed-loop, no working fluid escapes. Less efficient than gasoline or diesel engine, but could be made very quiet, no louder than a refrigerator or A/C. Run the boiler on propane. Another thought for boondocking, or off-grid living: thermoelectric generators. TE units (matrices?) exist; they are used commercially in small coolers. Glom a bunch of them on the outside of metal "chimney" and circulate hot fluid through the chimney; cold side of each junction has a finned heat sink, and fan draws air through. At night, your heat source is a propane flame. In the daytime, you could use a parabolic solar collector. Again, low efficiency, but dead quiet, and daytime power would be "free".
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 09, 2025 01:36 AM (npFr7) 282
Sounds like you need a same sized battery hooked in parallel. Maybe two new batteries.
——- That won’t solve the limited charging capacity of the RV charger. Not in parallel. It would be worse, or half again. The old school automotive chargers do a good job, but they are too slow as well. An extra battery I could swap out will actually work. Charge them both, every day, one held in reserve and plussed up. About 20 to 25 amp charger would do the trick. Not all the time, but for the “bulk” stage charging. A half depleted 100 amp battery takes all day to get it charged completely. And the generator is just loafing. The easiest cheapest solution is buy two or 3 of the old school transformer chargers and run them in parallel. That would get close to 20 amps. You really have to cook them at the end stage at least once in a while, for several hours. Equalization. That’s 16.25 volts at 77F. Even more in freezing temps. Without temperature compensation, battery charging is either almost useless, or very destructive. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 01:37 AM (2Fnww) 283
You could skip the mechanicals and use a woodstove or propane to supply heat to an absorption cycle refrigerator.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at November 09, 2025 01:44 AM (06Hmj) 286
That’s the crux of the problem. The RV manufacturers went to DC refrigerators away from propane. You know why.
Then they throw a “Solar Ready!” Sticker on the whole thing. A 20 pound tank of pane would last weeks. I plan on getting some solar panels, and I think they would help supplement nice. Thing is, in hot weather, the general idea is to be parked somewhere in the shade. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 01:45 AM (2Fnww) 287

Yeah, 13 had an incident probably unrelated to the oxygen tank blowing up. Late in the flight they heard another muffled bang. They determined it was one of the batteries, one of the cells vented off or did … something. They had a fairly complicated system of venting off gasses, into space. But something didn’t work quite right.
They never intended the command module to be shut down. Ever. But they had to, for a couple days. All those electronics and gyros and all sorts of things exposed to the coldness of space. And then cross your fingers, and turn it all back on, condensation covering everything, and lurking behind the panels in the wiring and switches. They figured it would probably be a fireworks show. Those guys had balls of steel. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 02:19 AM (2Fnww) 310
Yeah, those LiFePO4 batteries are way less prone to fires, but they still cost quite a bit, and if you are careful with flooded lead-acid, you can get ten years or more out of them. I am a little suspicious of the claims about the LiFePO4 longevity, and unfortunately it takes a while to see the claims borne-out. I probably have another five years in my current set....we shall see.

Yeah, I know one can buy hydrogen at a welding store or whatever, what I’m getting at is what was alluded to earlier.
I think for fuel cells, the density. It needs to be kept at cryogenic temperatures or near enough. Maybe that’s not a show stopper. Just a big ass Thermos type bottle? Commercial fuel cell kwH rate, I’m sure we can dispense with that, get You Know Who to build ‘em cheap, right? I haven’t penciled out what I’m spending on gasoline to charge a battery, but it is proportionally very expensive. Posted by: Common Tater at November 09, 2025 02:26 AM (2Fnww) 312
The thing about the Lithium batts, they are bricked below about 40 degrees. “Protection circuitry” they call it. They cannot (or should not) be attempted to recharge approaching freezing temperatures. That won’t work for me. Lead-acid charging is glacial and even worse when it gets cold, but given the appropriate voltage they will charge. It is remarkable that although over a hundred years old, lead-acid as a technology still has a lot going for it.

Hottest thing in battery tech now is a betavoltaic cell, where you use radio-active Nickel and a semiconductor with a diamond substrate with a 50n year lifetime.
CHINESE startup Betavolt is suppose to have something to market soon. A dime sized 3.3 V battery with a life of 50 years. Posted by: pawn at November 09, 2025 02:31 AM (sPsWv) 314
Did you ever notice you never see kids with zits anymore?
Have zits been cured? Don't worry this is my only comment for the night. Posted by: eleven at November 09, 2025 02:35 AM (fV+MH) 315

_-_ And simple is good. When reading about the LiFePO4 batteries, I saw the words 'battery management system', reflected on 30 years as a software developer, and stuck with the older technology when replacing the batteries back in 2021. At the time, the price difference was more dramatic than it is now - got 12 L-16 type batteries for about $3600. If I remember correctly, the equivalent setup for LiFePO4 was four times the cost. “Radioactive nickel”
What happens when little kids swallow one of those? A lot of radioactive isotopes are pretty harmless, so long as they aren’t ingested. The short duration stuff is dangerous - like Iodine, but - it’s short duration, maybe a week. The 30,000 year stuff is bad, but doesn’t cause the problems like the midrange stuff. Strontium and Cesium iirc. The body thinks its Calcium, and hoovers it up and goes straight to the bones.
