Mount Mitchell, in North Carolina...the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. To give you some sense of scale, Mount Mitchell is about 6,800 feet high, and Donner Pass through the Northern Sierra is about 7,000 feet high...one of the lowest passes through the range!

Average annual snowfall on Mount Mitchell (from 1980-2024) is about 85 inches. Average annual snowfall at Donner Pass is about 450 inches.

This is why I chuckle when I hear people talk about mountains in New Jersey.

Federal Firearm Indictments Up 292 Percent Under Expanded Project Safe Neighborhoods in Northern Illinois

The number of defendants charged in PSN firearm indictments is up 287 percent compared to last year. The PSN program is an evidence-based program that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders while bringing together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify the most pressing violent crime problems and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
One such problem is violence in Chicago's downtown neighborhoods and public rail system. In June of this year, U.S. Attorney Boutros announced an expansion of PSN to include the economic centers in downtown Chicago and the entire rail system operated by the Chicago Transit Authority, including all train lines.

There was a significant time spent on the plight of free and enslaved people and those on the English side who lured them to fight for the King. Didn't turn out too well. Other than that, a good rundown on the fighting and non-fighting up to 1776. A good rundown of TJ and others penning the Declaration of Independence and the outcome of that in America and England. So far, Burns isn't getting TOO deeply involved in the black/indian situation. It is significant to history that Virginia was the most powerful of the colonies and about 40% slaves.

They are mountains. The NE corner of NJ has a bit of the Appalachian Mountains going through it. Yea, they're small in comparison to the Rockies, Cascades, Sierras, out west, but still mountains. Be nice.

163 Another potential stop on TiFW's BLY#2B is to see Jeff Dunham in Reno in March. We can combine that with a trip to visit DD#1 and her family, since they have a house 30 miles away in Truckee.

But they are buying a bigger house in Orinda, so we may just "squat" at the Truckee house for a night or two. I also want to see the big trees 😊

Poor Paul - he asked if we had to do something EVERY month.

I told him that we don't know how much time I have left (the cancer has started to figure out how to beat the chemo), so yes, for as long as I am feeling good, we will be seeing/doing all of the things that I have always wanted to see/do!

165 May I talk about the highest peak in TX? Guadalupe Peak? In Gudalipe Mountains National Park. It's not majestic compared to the 14-ers in Colorado. But a cool summit at 8751 ft. It's a fun hike 3 miles to the backpack campground. Then a mile to the summit. There is an odd pyramid from American Airlines at the top.

You can scale it's mighty peaks (drive up to it) and gaze upon the majestic scenery (it's a cattle ranch but for a few bucks, you can drive to PP). It's nothing but rolling grasslands as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can probably see the Rockies. I've never been to Panorama Point but I want to see it. I don't know why.

Well more like bumps in the grand scheme. There are the watchung mountains, but i think the highest peak is only around 900ft max. Washington used one of them to scout British positions, because he could see 20 miles away. there is a monument there. It's called Washington rock. I went there a few times just for the historical thing. Then you got more mountains in the north west. High point is around 1800 ft. Again, not real big in the grand scheme, but its better than florida. lol

It's a fun hike 3 miles to the backpack campground. Then a mile to the summit. There is an odd pyramid from American Airlines at the top.

The hope is that the surgery will remove most of the cancer cells. So far it doesn't look like the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, but we will know more once they get in there.

Realistically, we know this will come back; we are just buying some extra time. Hopefully I have a few more years to go!

So do I. I lived in Arizona for a year and a half and spent as much time as I could in the desert, mainly the White Tank Mountains. I remember times, taking a rest after a hike, when I would just sit and listen, and the silence was almost palpable; it was quieter than sitting in a room in your own house. And the smell of sun-blasted rock and the feel of clean sand, and the sight of those tall saguaros. It's the only place that I think I ever actually yearned for.

I think you kind of answered your own question. I'm just guessing here but it's because its sparsely populated that you have huge counties out there. Otherwise, you'd have counties with the population in the 10's and no county seat because no town. A guess of course. I expect Texans to jump on this if wrong.

I'm a tent camper=backpacker but will totally recommend Big Bend NP In an RV you would need to go to Rio Grande Village campground. It is a nice place. You can cross over to Boquillas, MX if you wish from there. I can tell you lots of info about the area but it would be a lot and OT.

Note that geoid surface is not the actual topographical surface of the earth, sometimes dubbed the "topoid", that's the shape of mean sea level. Note there is a deep hole in the Indian Ocean. And it's matched by a pooched up place over in the South Pacific. And note Europe is sort of pooched up as well.

You can see defining latitude and longitude on that lumpy asymmetric surface would be a mess. Thus an ellipsoid is defined. We take an oblate spheroid (circle at the equator, but with polar radius less than equatorial), and find the best fit such surface to the geoid. That's the reference ellipsoid, WGS84 being the main one used.

Longitude on that ellipsoid is the same as spherical, but latitude is a bit different. It's not the angle of the radius to the surface point above the equator, but the angle of the surface normal at the point to the equator. Thus geodetic latitude is not exactly the same as spherical. The differences are small for the earth, but for high precision work, they are significant.

237 When GSP measures your position, it's giving those ellipsoidal coordinates relative to WGS84. The elevation given is the height about or below the ellipsoid, along the normal to the surface.

That is not the same as the height above the geoid, or your elevation relative to mean sea level. That difference is called the geodetic undulation. Right here at my location, it's about -80'. The geoid is 80 feet below the ellipsoid. And that's the proper elevation to use for barometer settings. The GPS elevation can thus trip you up.

I was a tent camper but married to a 5-Star Hoteler.

I'm lucky she agreed to the camper but only because I was willing to buy a ridiculous 30 foot behemoth which required an equally ridiculous truck to tow it with.....

I'll reach out as our plans firm up. Unfortunately Rio Grande village is already booked for the season.

Right now the proposed itinerary is Yuma, Az, Silver City, NM, maybe try to see the Marfa Lights then Big Bend. Haven't fleshed out the journey home yet.

I downloaded an elevation/location app for the stupid phone. It's supposed to correct for the undulation (most decent GPS devices do this now, but you've still got to be careful). It came up with 812', compared to the official value I use for this spot of 118'. That's pretty good.
