The original Scopitone machines are museum pieces now, but they used regular 16mm film and most of the original library has been recovered and converted to digital form. Damn, Jack DeJohnette passed away.
A very unique drummer. He added melodic color as well as rhythm in a bunch of small combos. Probably most well known for working with Keith Jarret. One of my favorite albums he played on is "Timeless' with John Abercrombie and Jan Hammer. A seriously unique piece of work. Posted by: pawn at November 05, 2025 04:27 AM (sPsWv) 19

I think I paid like $60 in January of last year for the 32GB in my PC now. Tom’s mentioned the CEO of Phison said NAND prices could be this high for a decade because of AI. A decent kit of RAM will be as expensive as a new CPU. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 05, 2025 04:45 AM (6ydKt) 37

NYT has a map of the boroughs showing who voted for Mamdami vs Cuomo. Queens was more sane than I thought! Look at all that yellow.
Apparently some heavy Jewish areas voted for Mamdami. So sad. The comments at the site where I saw the map were interesting. The original poster was excited to have Mamdami graduate from the same science charter school. I think he thought he'd get a lot of alumni also excited by the news. The comments mostly blasted Mamdami, though! One said he wants to ban the same charter schools he benefited from. Good point. The map shows where we have work to do. Someone please clone Scott Pressler and send him there. Scott was so excited about trying to make NJ more red. Alas it was not to be. Oh, apparently Debra Messing had an anti Mamdami social media post and she's getting pilloried for it. How does it feel to have rabid Trump derangement syndrome and still get canceled, Debra? It’s an off year election. A lot of people don’t bother. It’s a given that NYC and NJ will vote Dem. 65% of women voted for Spanberger in VA, add the shutdown and a bunch of angry fed workers in Northern VA and you get blue voters. I'm interested in who Pete Davidson voted for. He's a lefty toolbag, but his dad was killed in the World Trade Center on 9-11, trying to save lives. The "Dave Brubeck" video:
A couple of people have asked how I made this video so here we go - I took a clip from a 1964 live version of Take Five ( • Dave Brubeck - Take Five ) and made the drum loop by chopping up the intro and turning it from 5/4 into the 3/4 - 4/4 groove that Golden Brown has. The upright bass sound is sequenced from Logic, and the piano part was played in using one of the piano sounds from a Nord Electro 5D. Then I played the sax part over the top (I play a King Zephyr alto and for this I used a hard rubber Yanigasawa mouthpiece rather than my usual bright Guardala). The video was then edited using the clip I'd taken the drum loop from. Posted by: m at November 05, 2025 04:57 AM (RuTUS) 50

Oh! My insulation project worked out well yesterday. I bought a 2 x 2 x 1 square of OwensCorning insulation -- something that felt like styrofoam, but more rigid -- a packet of foam panels especially for insulating window A/C setups, and a knife. Back home, I measured what I needed on the big square, used my pocket knife to cut and then trim, and wedged both pieces in place on either side of the A/C unit. Done; no drafts. I'll return the unopened foam packet and knife today.
I'd hoped to put something similar on the outside, but I'd have to buy another big square ($10), and there really isn't any way to wedge the stuff in place outside. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 05, 2025 05:07 AM (wzUl9) 65

It's interesting to see how few foreign cars there are, relatively speaking, in the QM shows of the '70s. They were set and shot in LA for the most part. Yet the leads drove US cars (all Fords, Mercurys, or Lincolns), as did the other characters -- unless they were shown as wealthy. Then you'd see Mercedes sedans, or the two-seater SLs, usually for the wealthy man's wife.
Not many Saabs or Volvos yet, no Peugeots or Maseratis that I can recall, and very rarely a British car like a Jaguar -- though mostly that would be the famous E-type roadster. Last night I watched the famous 1938 Best Picture, You Can't Take It With You. James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore, Edward Arnold, and a slew of other actors and actresses you recognize but have trouble naming. Directed by Frank Capra, it's a charming semi-screwball comedy derived from the Kaufman/Hart play. The screwball element is the family Jean Arthur belongs to; the situation is not so weird (unlike, say, Bringing Up Baby). Fun stuff.

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people. Posted by: Boss Moss at November 05, 2025 *** I remembered it from my boyhood, and was pleased to find the show was as much fun for me as an adult. The tone is generally light and sparkly, the leads and guests are good-looking, the cars (normal cars for those days like Thunderbirds and Impalas, not exotic Italian or German cars) are a pleasure to see, and the plots are crisp and fast-moving. There was one story where Stu Bailey and a motley group are stuck on an island -- shades of Lost -- and one with no dialogue whatsoever. Apparently there was a writer's strike at the time, and Roger Smith ("Jeff Spencer"), not a Writer's Guild member, dashed off a fascinating script featuring his character which is utterly carried by notes and physical movement, no dialog at all. And for those who haven't used NoScript before: By default, it disables javascript on web pages (from any site) until you temporarily or permanently allow that site by clicking on the NoScript logo.
At first, a lot of sites will be utterly broken until you figure out what you need to allow. Some things like doubleclick.net and google-analytics.com you can permanently DISallow (mark as "Untrusted") and their javascript will never run on any page you visit. Simply searching "What is {domain name}" for any site you don't recognize will tell you whether it's one you want to allow or not. If it's analytics or marketing, you probably want to mark it as "Untrusted". Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 05, 2025 06:36 AM (O7YUW) 169

Brave runs fine on LM 22.2. At the moment, I'm using LM 21.3, which runs fine. Some issues with the keyboard but that isn't an LM issue. It's a refurbished Dell I got on Amazon. They keyboard and mouse pad has always been wonky. I just use a spare keyboard/mouse.

I will post something often repeated by me, that throughout our history we have met and prevailed over issues every bit as serious as this, with an unbroken record of success. It has become our heritage to continue the struggle of our predecessors so as to ensure that our Republic endures. I go into this one with the same steady, unshakable confidence as before. @172/Puddleglum: If Brave runs fine on LM 22.2 but FireFox doesn't, then definitely try uBlock Origin and NoScript extensions first. I suspect it's an advertising/javascript issue.
Brave has automatic blocks for some of the worst offenders out there, whereas in Firefox you need to use extensions for that. Yesterday, people were discussing how Republican voters stay home during off elections but Democrats don't. While I quoted you, my comment was intended to address that. Yowza. I upgraded both my desktop workstations to 256GB in the summer for $559 each. I just checked: would now be $1200 each. Posted by: Don't blame the alligators at November 05, 2025 07:39 AM (1Nv0l) 266

The NEP or “new economic program” arose in the 1920s as a result of widespread famine implementing Lenin’s fabulous fairy tale agrarian policies. It’s a really strange hybrid of fanatical lunatics who kill everyone not onboard with their lunatic policies. Then they starve, and start figuring stuff out that everyone else already figured out 5000 years ago.

Kathy Hochul is going into a tough campaign for governor next year, she isn't doing the well in the polls. So she has to be careful about how much she supports the mayor Mamdani. NYC does have a huge debt, so bankruptcy (2nd time) could be in the cards. The last bankruptcy was helped by the federal government, I don't expect Trump to lift a finger to help this time. I'd like to see Wall Street make the break and become the Wall Street which can be anywhere, with technology it can be.
