Since Doof ended the ONT last night with a magazine for Morons, question for Horde wisdom: are there any good print magazines left?

Not so long ago, there was a magazine for every niche interest. Almost everything that existed in real life, history, hobbying, the working world, or even science fiction had a following and at least one magazine. Magazines are a rich time capsule treasure trove of source material for the anthropologist and sociologist.

Many magazines have gone away, gone online only, shrunk in size, gone woke, or otherwise failed the signal to noise test (or some combination of those). Are there any good ones still out there? On any subject? At any price?

This is not a dig at magazines in general (other than Teen Vogue). The world of print advertising has changed and the interweb is a difficult competitor. Advertising dollars have largely gravitated to social media of various forms. Online is fine, but there is no substitute for flipping the pages between your fingers.

Is any magazine still publishing that should be known among the Horde? Think broadly and include magazines that are worthwhile, even if they're not in your particular area of interest.

This company's plan to launch 4,000 massive space mirrors has scientists alarmed: 'From an astronomical perspective, that's pretty catastrophic'

California-based start-up Reflect Orbital has applied for a government license to launch a giant mirror to space next year. The mission is meant to be the first step in the company's ambitious plan to operate a constellation of more than 4,000 solar reflectors to boost solar power production in twilight hours on Earth.
According to the company's application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Reflect Orbital wants to fly its demonstration satellite EARENDIL-1 next year, with an expected launch date in April. Once in orbit, the satellite will unfold a mirror that measures 60 by 60 feet (18 by 18 meters) in order to demonstrate its ability to direct sunlight down onto targets on Earth. The company, which won a $1.25 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the U.S. Air Force in May, says its future constellation will deliver light on demand after sunset and before sunrise to paying customers on Earth, effectively extending the daytime hours.
Reflect Orbital claims on its website that its constellation will enable solar power generation at night, make crops grow better and stronger, possibly replace urban lighting, provide emergency illumination in disaster zones and enable people to work into the night.
Reflect Orbital's spokesperson told Space.com in an email that by 2030, the company envisions a constellation of 4,000 of such satellites, circling Earth in a sun-synchronous orbit following the boundary between day and night.

Way back when TiFW was a young Moronette, she had had a copy of a Crochet magazine that had a lovely cover picture of then-governor-of-New-Hampshire John Sununu and his young son in vests that Mrs. Sununu had lovingly made for both of them.

And yes, they were as ugly as only homemade crocheted vests from the 1980's can be....

Wish I could find that magazine - probably gave it away years ago.

He sat as calm as could be when I used the shaver to try to even his remaining fur out -- right up to the time I tried to shave his legs. Piano lessons, from Madre Del Diabla. She earned her room and board in an undergrad curriculum by tutoring concert piano to the sorority girls. She also had to play in the cafeteria during lunch at her college. She made my sister and I begin at 2nd grade. I was only allowed to drop piano in the 8th grade when I added Bassoon to the Trumpet i was already playing.

We had an eye shield to prevent us from looking at our hands while playing. Mistakes would bring in extra exercises as punishment.

Taught me how to divorce left/right brain hand/eye coordination. Also taught me fractions.

Don't play anything anymore. Kind of regret that, but even th8nking about playing anything makes me unwell and starts a deep mad at Mom for her bullshit.

"MAD" was wonderful. From time to time, a reprint appears on the newsstand, and I'll pick it up: the movie parodies, drawn by the great Mort Drucker, are timeless, as are the work of Sergio Aragones and Don Martin, and the poetry of Frank Jacobs. The "usual gang of idiots" were a very talented bunch. Also, "MAD" did not carry advertising (apart from ads for their own merchandise), and depended entirely on money from subscriptions and newsstand sales. That's no way to get rich, but Bill Gaines did pretty well, regardless.

Means the hole moves from 4:30 to 7:30 instead of from 6:00 to 9:30. Result? More motion transferred to the linkage rod, so I can now find all the positions on the transmission end. "Park" is behind the detent, as it should be; I can shift from neutral to reverse without working the detent button, which is not ideal, but I can live with it.

Tightened up a little on the throttle valve cable, and now it shifts the way I want it to. Did a test drive, and it's all good.

Car has more jam off the line than before, and cruises nice and quiet at about 1900 RPM. I am very happy.

I fed a new clip into the Roscoe that had up until now been sitting nice and quiet in my back holster. Whatever *got* me, it was unpleasant. Perhaps old grease in their fryer?

Something turned my stomach, although I never claimed "food poisoning"-- just, couldn't keep it down.

245 AOP, been wondering if you've ever watched "Just Rolled In" on YouTube. Just like with your work, half (or more) of the time, I don't know enough automotives to know what I'm looking at, but the rust buckets, and DIY repairs, and 70,000-mile oil filters are cringeworthy hilarity.

Our main ride is in the shop. "Funny noise" and other repairs estimated to cost several bills. Debating whether to give 'em the go-ahead. Our mechanic is pretty good and has taken care of all our family vehicles reliably for many years, but that ol' Nissan Quest is getting on in years and some things are wearing out. Just like me. Don't want a new car, or even most not-so-new ones.

Yep sometimes things just don’t agree with you. Actual food poisoning though is dangerous and is a serious claim which required significant investigation. I only had one instance of actual food poisoning I handled at Red Lobster. It was actually the salad that got contaminated.

I happen to have a complete V6 engine from a '96 or '97 Nissan Quest in a storage shed. It came from a van that hit the ditch and shattered to transaxle case. I fired it up when I dragged it home, and the engine sounded fine. Shut it down, and tore the wreck to pieces. Never needed the engine, but it was too good to throw away...

If you can use it, it's yours for the asking. I could haul it to Arizona when I go South for the Winter. I have a few other parts, too, even some seats, and glass.

Due to the sniping of the grooming mouse network, Disney, and the dead eyed zombie utopians of Google, no F1 race this weekend for me. Not sure where they are in the schedule at this point, not that big of an F1 fan. Still, would have liked to seen the last couple of races. F1 is moving over to HBO Max (or one of those streaming services) next season and I'm not that interested in adding it. I'm just not that big of an F1 fan. Not that big a deal, just a FWP! I will endeavor to persevere.

And yeah, the trouble with car mags (besides mostly being paid shills for manufacturers) was always that they ranked every car mostly based on how it could tear around a racetrack. Important for sports cars, not so important for regular cars. Anything that had a comfortable ride you were told was so loose and wallowing that you could hardly drive it and you need to buy the smaller car that rides like a buck board cause then you could do your commute 40 mph over the speed limit. Well, that engine has sat there for ten years or so. I have no plans for it. I think it might fit some Nissan pickups, and maybe the 300ZX. Not sure the year range; maybe into the low 2000's?

284 Baby fatigue and weeks old babies starting to "talk" a sweet thing in life.

My youngest granddaughter spoke at length today to a ski resort logo on my tee shirt. Which was placed on my left boob. She had a lot to say, and normally talks to me instead with eye contact. I think she was tired.

There is nothing as sweet as a 2mo old baby trying to talk. While she was not looking me in the eye this time I let her converse as long as she wanted as it was important to her.

She gets a look in her eye of recognition and I know she's fixin' to chat with me. The ski logo is a new thing, altho they do talk to what catches their eyes. Sometimes the walls of their crib.

Thankful it is not a week ago and she was in the ED harfing. Doing well, thanks be to God.

I do love the ONT but not Kenny Chesney too much.

Mandingo in NYC is not currently my problem.

Indeed. Shittiest fast food I've ever eaten, and a strong contender for the shittiest food of all time I've ever eaten (had some real crap airline meals back in the day when they usually gave you simulated food rather than a bag of kibble).

Also the staff just seems...unclean. Not just the tattoos, piercings, and rainbow hair... I can handle all that. I mean actually...unclean.

3 days of viral sinus infection here. This past night, I only got out of bed 3 times to drain my head. Monday and Tuesday nights, I was up every hour sneezing and dripping.

Still, it's going away. Slowly.

I went cold turkey on the melatonin, which doesn't help.

I'm always awake in the middle of the night. Usually it's because I haven't hit the sack yet. I wait until I get dead tired, crash hard, open my eyes 6-7 hours later.

Seems a little bold IMO to declare them ‘Ruling the Roost’. Burger King and KFC also do more business. Chik Fil A is doing more business per location, but at so many fewer locations I’m not sure that’s really a meaningful statistic unless you’re looking at becoming a franchisee.

And of course, if we go global, McDonalds has nearly 20% more locations than Chik Fil A has total employees.

(And if we’re doing global revenue, friggin Starbuck’s smokes them all by like $10B…
