  • Some crazy person has created a version of Windows 7 that fits in just 69MB of disk space. (Tom's Hardware)

Considering that a decent SSD costs about 5c per GB, that's about 0.4c of space.

Also, it isn't actually useful for anything. It runs, but it doesn't run most software without you manually installing a bunch more system files.

  • Those videos explaining how to bypass Windows 11's online account requirement during installation that YouTube has been merrily deleting? Blame AI. (The Register)

YouTube hasn't said anything, but when a video is taken down instantly, and an appeal is also rejected instantly, that's AI.

  • YouTube was probably too busy to comment on the situation because the people at the top are occupied with laying off the people at the bottom to focus more heavily on the AI that is already destroying the site. (CNBC) (archive site)

    Oh, good.

  • Testing Highpoint's RocketAIC 7608AW. (Tom's Hardware)

This is a PCIe 5.0 card with a PCIe 5.0 switch chip on board and eight PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots. So it's fast, but it's also very expensive with the bare card priced at $1999.

The fault there seems to be mainly the PCIe 5.0 switch chip. There don't seem to be any products out there at a reasonable price.

The QNAP 4-port M.2 card that I have costs less than $200 on Amazon, but that's PCIe 3.0. Anything more recent will cost you an arm and a leg and a kidney and maybe a cornea.

  • Israel demanded Amazon and Google use a secret "wink" code to sidestep legal orders. (The Guardian)

Warrant canaries. What these subliterate fascists are talking about are warrant canaries.

A warrant canary is a thing that appears to be normal until and unless the company receives a warrant with a gag order attached, the reasoning being that while gag orders are still legal, they can't compel you to keep your pet canary singing.

Particularly if they don't know you have a pet canary.

No fault attaches to Israel in this. All the blame attaches to the totalitarian regimes that necessitate this sort of warning mechanism.

    And their pet media mouthpieces.

  • When Canva bought Affinity in March last year, everyone wondered how long it would take them to fuck up a good and affordable multi-platform product range. It turns out the answer was 19 months. (Ars Technica)

Good news first: The whole Affinity product range is now free, bundled into a single application simply called Affinity.

Not really a problem news: To get the full functionality you need to pay $120 per year for a Canva subscription, but the only function gated behind the paywall right now is AI slop. The free version does everything the three Affinity apps could do before, except...

Problem news: Affinity v3 can read but not write Affinity v2 files. If you use the new app there's no going back, unless you re-export to a third-party format and lose internal history.

It could have been much worse, but they could also not have done this at all.

  • A new mathematical proof debunks the idea that the universe is a simulation except it does nothing of the fucking sort. (Phys.org)
"It has been suggested that the universe could be simulated. If such a simulation were possible, the simulated universe could itself give rise to life, which in turn might create its own simulation. This recursive possibility makes it seem highly unlikely that our universe is the original one, rather than a simulation nested within another simulation," says Dr. Faizal. "This idea was once thought to lie beyond the reach of scientific inquiry. However, our recent research has demonstrated that it can, in fact, be scientifically addressed."
    No it hasn't.
The team demonstrated that even this information-based foundation cannot fully describe reality using computation alone. They used powerful mathematical theorems - including Gödel's incompleteness theorem-to prove that a complete and consistent description of everything requires what they call "non-algorithmic understanding."
Yes, that's cute. But we already have Gödel's incompleteness theorems (there's two of them) and this doesn't seem to tell us anything new at all - just a limit in the ability to determine the truth of certain mathematical statements.

The second problem, though, is that no-one has ever shown that "non-algorithmic understanding" exists, could possibly exist, or has any kind of clear definition.
The team's conclusion is clear and marks an important scientific achievement, says Dr. Faizal.

"Any simulation is inherently algorithmic - it must follow programmed rules," he says.
There's just one small problem here: This is completely false.

  • Speaking of every game that comes along Escape from Duckov, a combat game involving ducks written by a five-person team in China, has sold two million copies in two weeks, while western titles with budgets in the tens of millions of dollars continue to flounder.

Just a month ago, Megabonk, written by a one-man team, sold a million copies in two weeks... While western titles with budgets in the tens of millions of dollars continued to flounder.

And before that it was Silksong, written by three guys in Australia, selling 6 million copies, and before that it was Schedule 1, written by just one guy in Australia, selling 5 million copies.

It starts to feel like the established video game companies are doing something wrong.

  • Meanwhile Nintendo's patent on capturing monsters and putting them in your pocket, which the company planned to use as a legal bludgeon against Palworld, a game where you capture monsters and put them in your pocket, has been rejected by the Japanese patent office for being "boring and stupid". (MSN)

Actually they just said the patent lacked originality, which of course it fucking does because Nintendo waited thirty years before trying to patent it.

18 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 43 chilly degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, but with the howling winds, it could almost be a day in the low 20s. It is supposed to be nearly 50 today, but again, with high winds throughout.

For the past few hours I've had a rapid, intermittent stabbing pain in the left side of my head, just above the ear. It isn't a tick - at least, I don't see one - and I think it might be just some odd muscle twitch, as it hurts when I rub a hand across the area.

So, because of that, I've been up working since about 2.30am. I had hoped it would take my mind off the pain and let it fade away, but no luck. I'm going to wrap up what I have left and take some aspirin to see if it helps; I certainly won't be able to go back to sleep.

Today is day one of our two day gem and mineral show.

Setting up the hall yesterday went swimmingly, due in large measure, I might add, to putting my suggestion into practice of having the rental firm deliver the two lengths of tables in specific quantities near the center of each hall.

All of that arose out of my insistence during last year's takedown that stacking tables at multiple locations around the hall according to their length as they were released by the dealers was to our advantage. "They come and pick these up with a truck, which can go anywhere easily, and trumps the need for us to haul tables long distances to create very few caches," I opined. That and my refusal to load dollies with tables to have them hauled clear across the room. We in the "tote that barge" crowd had finally put down our foot.

48 NGL, purposely went shopping last week and stocked up on staples, especially in case things with stores get nuts. We're pretty much all out of meat, which is scary, it's been a while since I'd shopped. so I stocked up on stuff to freeze. I also got baked sweets, candy, and chips for the Halloween weekend. Not my usual haul, but it is what it is.

The person ringing me up kind of gave me a pointed look at all the meat and junk food, and actually asked me, EBT card? I felt embarrassed, like I'd done something wrong. It's amazing, and a little sad, that you see a certain kind of cart, though, and it instantly stereotypes you as "oh she's an EBT user." It shouldn't have a stereotype, but it does!

65 @aelfred_D

My favorite Halloween memory was the year after I graduated college. Living in a rundown row house with a couple friends, I got really excited and bought several bags of candy. But our outdoor light was broken, so that + the shady environs meant no one showed for hours.
I was very disappointed.

As my roommates and I were drinking before the party we were going to, around 9 pm some brave kid and his brave dad knocked, at which point I ran to the door, flung it open, and handed him the CVS bag containing 3 large bags of candy.

I will never forget that kid’s eyes, like giant moons, or his dad’s, looking at me like “What the hell are you doing”

As a kid, I was taking my little brother and sister around. Stopped at a house and rang the bell. Guy answered and said, "OMG, is it Halloween?" Handed us each $20, closed the door, and turned of his porch light. That was mid-70s so it was a fuck-ton of money.

There are only a handful of live TV streamers to choose from.

Hulu Live TV - Disney is planning on folding Hulu inside Disney+, so who knows if Live TV will make it? Maybe they”ll call it Disney+ Live TV and keep it going.

Sling TV - Has all the basic channels but you have to get the blue & orange plans to get them all, and no live local stations like Hulu & YouTube have.

Philo TV - Cheaper ($28/month) but not as many channels (83 total), and no news, sports or local channels.

Fubo - Mainly focused on sports channels.

Frndly TV - $8.99/month for 43 channels.

Most have some kind of cloud DVR feature.

Philo is probably the best if you don’t watch much news or sports. Fubo if you really like sports. Frndly if you want some basic channels and that’s it. YouTube TV or Hulu Live TV if you want the closest thing to cable/satellite without the cord or dish.

I looked into all of them a few months ago to get out from under Dish. I was thinking YT TV, but they don’t carry A&E networks, no History Channel so no bueno.

107 A new mathematical proof debunks the idea that the universe is a simulation except it does nothing of the fucking sort.

For decades now, when trying to provide a materialistic template to explain God's Creation, the Great Simulation is a wonderful means to comprehend the concept of being omniscient, omnipresent, able to alter time and space (aka miracles), to transcend time (time travel and locality are not simultaneously possible) to know the future and know all the things simultaneously happening.

It would take an infinite mind because of all the things going on. It would also require establishing the rules and orders, the constants of the algorithm.

How God could simultaneously run the simulation and be fully part of the simulation. (to be fully God and fully man during the Incarnation) breaks my mind.

Its like people don't know what any of the letters of SNAP stand for:

The way the narrative treats SNAP, its critical, it clearly isn't focused on nutrition and "assistance" is not a synonyn for "dependent".

The EBT is ghetto Bitcoin. EBT credits are often traded for drugs, alcohol, weaves, tatts, sex, etc.

I don’t use it every day but it’s working fine so far.

Some tips on inkjet printers, though.

Print something, anything, out at least once every few weeks to keep the heads from clogging.

Invest in a printer cover that will fit your printer.
I found one on Amazon that slips right over my Epson for like $10.

Dust and disuse are the mortal enemies of inkjet printers.

I've had this one for more than a year, and this is the first time I had to clean the heads.

Word of warning: when you get refill ink - use as much as you need to refill the tanks then throw the bottles away. Don't try saving the bottles for a second refill. Exposure to the air that replaces the drained ink will turn the ink into a goo that will clog up the print head and feed lines, ruining the printer. Don't ask how I found that out.

150 of course the universe is a simulation

it's a physics simulation

that's why it has physics, which you can go outside and test yourself

this makes absolutely zero difference to anyone living inside it and does not imply, in any way, the existence of a "simulator" or anything else outside of itself

furthermore, Bell's Inequality already proves there are no hidden variables hidden at the bottom, and MWI has shown all the quantum outcomes really happen, so it really makes no difference

all that said, the universe does seem to have some interesting limits on computation (the limits imposed by too many Higgs field calculation in too small a space or time, i.e. time dilation)

but keep in mind, time is just an increase in entropy, and there's no evidence the universe actually experiences anything like time per se... we started at the lowest possible entropy (Big Bang) and end at the highest (heat death) but that's really just an artifact of the fact we can only measure "time" via entropy

otoh if QMM is right and all information is preserved then the Tipler cylinders really are going to be built

Where are you getting this twaddle? Non-linearities in secondary Hilbert space computations completely negates your spurious, non-sensical assertions. Sheesh.

Posted by: Bullshit! at November 01, 2025 10:49 AM (C4nCF)

153 of course I don't mean to imply time travel is possible... there are no other "times" to travel to because what we perceive as time is just the result of certain entropic states being way more likely than others

as there's no reason to think those calculations ever happen more than once, there are no other "times" that exist to go to

but if Tipler was right, the information necessary to resurrect the dead is encoded in the fabric of the universe and it's just a question of cost
