Prayer Requests:
9/11 – D sent an update for Susan, his wife, and her battle with cancer: Thank you, everyone, again for your prayers for Susan. Her cancer markers went down at the last Dr visit, but she is back to having abdominal pain that is making it hard to eat right. They are trying to get her weight up and thank God for the good days they do have. The really good news is that she is able to walk around again without the fear of falling over.
9/23 Update – The pain has started coming back, so they went to the hospital and found a cyst. They are trying to determine if it is infected.
10/16 Update – Susan was hospitalized for 3 weeks. They removed the cyst and her gallbladder. The chemo continues; it’s rough so far, but the cancer only grown 1 mm, so it seems to be working. Thank you to everyone for their prayers.
9/28 - Teresa in Fort Worth gave an update: It has been 1 year since Teresa started “down the cancer rabbit hole”. She sends her thanks for the prayers as they have buoyed her and her family through this year. She has been blessed to exceed the original 6-12 months predicted, by the grace of God – and the prayers of many people. Her next CT scan is in November, and the surgeon is pretty sure that her tumors will be small enough to remove/destroy.
10/7 Update – A recent CT scan shows lots of calcification (indicating tumor cell death), and the oncologist didn’t see any sign on the small tumors. The area where the largest tumor was now shows lots of calcification and the largest tumor has shrunk by almost 90%! Her next CT scan will be 11/3, and they assume they will be discussing surgery to remove the lobe of her liver, where the tumor is located. Timelines are uncertain, but she is hopeful that she will get to spend Christmas with her family at least one more time, if not more! Thanks to EVERYONE who has been praying on her behalf.
9/29 – toby928 asked for prayers for a brother named Joe, who is being crushed by grief. Joe’s wife is in a coma and will likely die in the next few days.
10/12 Update - – Joe’s wife did pass away. She is safe in the arms of our Savior.
10/18 Update – Joe could still use prayers. Losing both parents and his wife in one year has hit him hard.
10/1 – Duke Lowell sent an update. He is home now, after 8 days in the hospital and every antibiotic known to man. He sent thanks for the prayers, and thanks to God for granting him another day in this glorious world He’s created.
10/11 Update – After a second stint in the hospital, Duke is home now. He was recovering nicely, but something “knocked him sideways”. Severe dehydration put him into renal failure. He is on the mend now.
10/2 – Bluebell passed along an update: grammie winger sends her gratitude for all the prayers – she feels they are working. On Oct 6 she will be starting a cancer treatment program because her doctors are “cautiously optimistic” that they can give her some more time. Monday she gets the port, followed by 6 hours of chemo infusion on Tuesday. The Rev is doing better because now he has some hope. Please pray for her as she starts this treatment program because in her words, “prayer changes things”.
10/18 Update – grammie winger sent an update, that she has had her first chemo treatment. There were no side effects. She noted “God is very kind.”
10/4 – Legally Sufficient’s “Boss” will be undergoing intestinal surgery shortly. It looks scary so prayers for him and his medical team are appreciated.
10/4 – The Fabulous for safe travels as she travels to visit her oldest daughter who is about to be a mother of a baby girl. Prayers for the mom to be and her child.
10/4 – Skip requested prayers for his dad, who fell at church back in August, hitting his head. He fell again at home and has had back pain since then. He is going in for more tests on 10/8.
10/11 Update – Dad has a brace to wear and has pain medication, so is doing OK for now. He will need an outpatient procedure soon for an injection in his spine to fill a void. Continuing prayers will help.
10/18 Update – Dad is in the hospital, needing some blood clots cleared up, and will soon have the outpatient operation for his back.
10/25 Update – Dad was released from the hospital and is in a rehab center near his home.
10/4 – Our Country is Screwed sent thanks for the prayers over the past year, during breast cancer treatments. The prayers have sustained, through surgery, chemo, and now through radiation.
10/4 – Random Dave would appreciate prayers from the Horde. He is one of the 5% of government workers that make the other 95% look bad, and he is trying to move to the private sector. He has found a good possibility to meet/exceed his pay and do an interesting job that is a good fit for his skills and interests. Praying that if it’s where God wants him, He will make it clear and the road smooth.
10/4 – DenverGregg asked for prayers for Ana, a lady from his church who is experiencing unemployment and mental illness, which tend to exacerbate each other.
10/4 – Longtime Lurker, Morgan, offers praise for financial blessings and petitions for safety in upcoming travel and coping with social isolation and loneliness, including finding a church home. Blessings upon Ace, the COBs, the other site workers and all the blog lurkers and participants.
10/4 – Mrs. Leggy asked for prayers for a young girl who is suffering from leukemia and now has a horrible infection of the colon. Surgery may be required and because of her weakened condition, this could kill her. Thanks so very much!
10/6 – Inogame sent happy news about his wife and baby. The 20 week ultrasound was completed, and there is one baby girl with all the correct parts in the correct places. Mom and baby are doing well, though mom could use a nap or 20.
10/7 -CW is a long-time Horde member who could use prayers. His relationships with his son and his daughter have deteriorated recently, and his daughter has cut him off from the grandchildren.
10/8 – fourseasons asked for prayers for a brother-in-law, Chris, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had another scan last weekend and there is another tumor. He is losing his vision and has lost his ability to speak. He will have surgery on 10/10, and the surgeon said he will probably lose the ability to walk. The family is devastated. Chris is a wonderful man and has always been healthy.
10/11 Update – Chris is recovering from surgery to remove his brain tumors now. He was talking last night, which he wasn’t able to do before surgery. They are hoping for a full recovery.
10/11 – NuclearJim requests prayers for spiritual strength to defeat prostate cancer.
10/11 – the lower depths asked for prayers for his/her mother Gail and her eyes (macular degeneration) and knees (bone on bone) failing.
10/11 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son. He needs a job and has been diligently looking for one. His degree is in botany.
10/11 – tbodie Lurker requested continued prayers for a son with pancreatic cancer. He has been through 3 months of chemo that significantly shrank the cancer. This week he had surgery to remove the remaining cancer. They also removed his spleen. So far things look good. Thank you.
10/11 – Brother Tim asked for prayers as he has two more sessions of radiation. Prayer works and God heals.
10/18 Update – Radiation is done and now Brother Tim is recovering from the effects and praying for a clean PET scan.
10/11 – Ben Had asked for prayers for a very special man we know as olddog. May his medical issues be benign and full health restored.
10/13 – K requested prayers for a co-worker (Grant). Grant and his wife are expecting their first child, and they are experiencing some complications. K would appreciate prayers for peace and a healthy baby for Grant, his wife, and their unborn child.
10/15 – Bulg asked for prayers for an elderly neighbor, who used to babysit for them, is undergoing chemo for colon cancer.
10/16 – jrgunn5 asked for prayers for a son who is going through a very trying time. The son is almost finished with his teaching credentials and Master’s program. He sees other students being offered positions that he is more qualified for, yet he is ignored by the schools where he is working. He is becoming angry and despairing of gaining a position to pay off the enormous debt he has taken on to pursue this career. He needs to hear God’s voice, and a door opening soon would be appreciated.
10/18 – rhennigantx asked for prayers for his friend John. John was a functioning alcoholic while working, and then retired about 2 years ago, and is now in rehab. Prayers are also needed for Toni. She had to have a kidney stone crushed and says she will never do surgery again.
10/18 – From about That Time can use prayers, as a biopsy revealed some sort of lymphoma.

Then an MRI will also help them decide if she needs a shunt to be inserted into the brain to drain excess cerebral/spinal fluid away and into her stomach. I'm guessing she'll likely need it, fingers crossed that we can speed up this process and get her back to 100% ASAP.

10/21 – TecumsehTea wrote with prayers of praise that she has recovered from her heart attack. Areas of concern, though, are that they cannot keep her blood pressure stable and in a desirable range. This has brought several additional trips to the ER to bring it down and for observation. She is asking for wisdom and guidance for the doctor, and patience and peace for herself. She says this has been a scary ride, but God continues to show His faithfulness.
10/21 – Grateful wrote to ask for prayers for Pillage Idiot, that God would guide him in his search for employment – resulting in an opportunity that makes the best use of his unique skills. And that PI be blessed with acceptance of their love and caring for him, as he does for everyone else.
10/22 – Pennsyltucky requested prayers for his dad, who underwent cancer surgery on 10/21. Everything seems to have gone well (they’re confident they got it all!) but due to his age, his hospital stay and convalescence will be longer than usual. Dad is doing well, is awake and alert. A full recovery is anticipated but it will take a while. Thank you so much.
10/23 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for prayers for TheJamesMadison, who recently lost his job. Please pray that he finds a new job quickly, and that God grants him peace of mind and calmness of spirit to face this unexpected trial.
10/25 – M&B would like prayers for M's sister. Suddenly, she got dizzy, and with no other symptoms, was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Surgeons said that they were able to remove most of it but gave her an 18-24 month survival. She's just finished the first round of chemo and radiation, and she just feels awful. She has that "deer in the headlights" look, since this all happened so fast, with no real symptoms! M&B have been searching through all the recent news about other medicinal options that are working for this type of cancer. We are grateful for all prayers!
10/25 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her retired organist Jessie, whose dear daughter, S, died of cancer recently. Also prayers for Korean War vet, R, who has cancer and is not expected to live long.
10/27 – N asked for prayers for her youngest daughter, "LK", who needs prayers for safety and peace, and her best friend "C" for health and that stress not cause a flare up of psoriatic arthritis as they and another roommate work with the police and the landlord to have the 4th roommate "M" evicted because she is threatening them and making the living situation a nightmare. “M” is bipolar and medicating with alcohol. Prayers for her healing and that she find salvation from the self-destructive path she's on would also be appreciated.

I always thought that people with skin in the game would do a better job of screening their fellow passengers before boarding an airliner.

Run it like a office fire drill, segregate everyone who is to board a particular flight, and give them a moment to self-assess their crew and manifest.

Can't sue Uncle Sugar or the airlines for any profiling performed by other passengers. And no explanation is required for rejecting any passenger. A curious side effect is that over time there will be fewer Healthy At Any Size™ while the dress code will greatly improve.

Interesting idea, but there’s so many ways it could go wrong. What happens if there are 6 visibly Orthodox Jews with tickets, and the rest of the flight are wokesters who decide “no Jews allowed!”
Won’t even get into the obvious white and black issues, you’d probably have to end up with completely segregated planes.

37 Doesn't it seem as though suddenly there are lots of cases of glioblastoma? I hadn't really heard of it until 2016 when a close friend was diagnosed with it. He died within 4 months.
Then JJ, and there have been a number of people we have prayed for on this thread with it.
It used to be considered rare.

I'm addicted to the special dark chocolate Hershey kisses. Cannot keep my hands off the things.
We had one trick or treat. My son and his wife were dressed as vampires to match the 7 month old dressed like a vampire bat. Grandson got a toy while his parental units got Hershey bars. Now I get the rest of those Hershey bars we bought yesterday!

I self deleted that observation, but since you brought it up and after seeing some of those more wild Carnival's Section Ape cruises, I'm not sure that the completely segregated planes are all that bad an idea.

As for the "visibly Orthodox Jews", the TSA's budget, not including the tens of billions in deferred defined benefit pensions, is over $11B. I'm sure that the powers of corruption and grift will find a way to handle these hypothetical corner cases from the savings of dismissing this totally Unconstitutional agency.

We spent Halloween at our daughter's and son-in-law's house. Many ghouls and goblins showed up.

Grand-daughter and her hubby came with their two little girls. The older great-grand was dressed as a wolf, and the littlest was a pig. Our grand-daughter wore a headband with pig ears, and a pig nose. The plan was for the family to go Trick-or-Treating as the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs, but her hubby refused to wear a pig nose.

I assisted my 15 year-old grandson distribute candy. I told him he was being too stingy in giving-out the candy. He replied, "The more that's left, the more I get to eat." We had to have a little discussion about selfishness! LOL!

I never knew of anything like that when young. I started to get suspicious when 2 nephews and a niece in the large extended family were diagnosed with that, or other neurological disorders (one had a stroke out of the blue at age 36, fortunately recovered). Asked and all 3 had experience with medications that were supposed to be for various psychological ailments, one had been on Ritalin for example. They weren’t drug abusers, it was all prescribed by reputable physicians.
Long story short, started me to thinking even more about how our medical system is creating at least as many problems as they’re fixing.

Out running errands yesterday, I swung into a strip mall I hadn't visited in years. It was basically dead after the grocery store closed. I found a liquor store and dropped in. Pretty nice place, clerk said they'd been there for 15 years, which illustrates how even in your home town, you can miss things.

I'm thinking along those lines as well. Or it's something environmental. I did read a study, a while ago, that suggested a link between untreated Lyme Disease and glioblastoma. It was a very small study, but Lyme was found in 5 our of the 6 brains studied. I have no idea how to find that information again, but I found the premise interesting.

Because I'm over 29, my wife pushed me to get a primary physician. I fired the first one because he was such a pill-pusher. The replacement also pushes pills, but knows her place.

It's pretty simple: if you give me 2 or 3 meds at a time, how do I know which one is causing side effects? I won't go along with that. We do one, observe the results, and then, if necessary add another. Even with just one, she wanted to up the dose. I had to point out to her that the label specifically says it takes 2 to 4 weeks to reach full effectiveness and it had been all of 10 days.

Big Pharma poisons us and then sells us the cure.

The diseconomy of scale in the welfare state is simply staggering. Local charities carry most of the actual weight, with actual poor people relying on them rather than the federal benefits, which mostly go to grifter non-profits for staff salaries.

The whole sector needs to be abolished. If we got rid of all corporate taxes, revenue would go down, but spending would drop by an even greater amount as non-profits wouldn't be applying for grants and passing the dough around.

Late in life, my father was suddenly afflicted with a bad case of gout in his feet, very painful. His doctor was all about checking his diet, even though he always ate healthy and nothing had changed. He was on some medications for a lung ailment, and he himself researched and found that the contraindications between two of them caused uric acid to precipitate in the body, ie gout. Dropped them and it went away in less than a week.

Food Stamp value was a real food item like 1 pound of meat or 1 pound of rice. Essentially Big Govt Dept of Ag buying foods from the farmer or rancher and delivering same to the family in need. EBT is just fungible dollars so that cash (legal and illegal) is conserved for other activities (legal and illegal) with ZERO.ZERO regard for farmers and ranchers.
EBT needs to have a life of no longer than a season (90 days) plus 5 to 14 weeks (average time for 70% of unemployed to find work).

Modern liberals have no connection to the actual poor, and measure their virtue by how they feel, not what results are achieved.

Older folks understood that if you give someone money, they will likely waste it - they are poor for a reason. So you feed them directly, and you move the commodities directly, which makes theft much more difficult (trying fencing a case of mayonnaise vs redirecting a cash deposit to "overhead").

That's all been lost, which is how we have the current Dem leadership. Also trannies, because reality is now optional, and if people don't go along, you punish them, not accept that your fantasy is just that - imagined.

I doubt it, certainly in the short-term. We are seeing the end result of multiple generations of people being told that they're worthless and will never amount to anything, all because of an "oppressor", and are entitled to a stipend.

If you tell people that their lives have no value, many will internalize that and live undisciplined lives with the corresponding drug/alcohol abuse, sexual license, and sloth. Interestingly, there was a reaction to the doctrines of John Calvin: if one's behavior did not affect God's selection of the Elect, there was no reason not to eat, drink and be merry -- so why not party and fornicate?

I've written about this before. I had a route with a courier company in the late 70's. Boxes of food stamp booklets. NO sign out to pick up and no sigh in for receipt. And I know from personal observation that the Cadillac queens picking up their booklets is true.

Physical coupons are as easy or easier to sell or trade than the swipe cards. There is likely less stigma now than then.

My wife is volunteering with St. Vincent and they do all their work in actual food, actual clothing, etc. The people they serve are invisible to the feds, the poorest of the poor, but none of the aid reaches them because the non-profits suck it all up with bogus projects and of course all the retailers allow "working poor" to buy non-food items by relabeling them. It's a pure game, and people who could go to work figure out that it's more profitable to scam the system.

Meanwhile people who happen to fall on hard times due to job loss cannot navigate the maze of regulations and jump through all the hoops, so they go to the local outfits, who actually know and keep tabs on their clients.

Bear attacks have happened even in southern prefectures not known for having bears.

This week a female politician got up and gave a speech lambasting the bear hunting allowed and policies in general as not effective, she introduced a bill, IIRC, to make hunting both bears and boars quicker. Right now it's up to the police who take in general 2-9 hours to show up after a bear attack.

The problem, of course, is that citywards and Japanese AWFLs don't want the "cute and cuddly" bears to be harmed.

There's very much a strain of American philosophical thought that people are poor as a result of a character defect and deserve to suffer for it. To be sure, poverty can be the result of bad life decisions, but it can also strike down otherwise hard-working folks and my experience of FUNemployment was very instructive in how the system actually works.

We've gamed it so that collecting the benefits requires quite a bit of work, supposedly to prevent waste (HAH!) but it really served to filter out everyone but the professional poor and their patrons. People recover despite the system, not because of it.

In "The Red Thread", Diana West thinks Niebuhr was basically communist (iirc). I'm not sure it is that clear cut, but never had the determination to really study the issue deeply.

In Niebuhr's book "Moral Man and Immoral Society", he basically says (imo) some men can be moral, but larger groups always push their own agenda.

Apparently, every level in the store from store/shift manager down to barista is responsible for cleaning the store, bathrooms and drain traps. So you don’t get hired to do a specific job, you do it all. One time some worker who was just cleaning the bathroom finished to give a hand on the counter no thanks. Next time somebody who was cleaning the floor drain pops up to help. That was it. Completely unsanitary especially since they let everyone use those bathrooms. I’m not an ocd nut, but why take chances when you can go elsewhere.

My wife's work has been an eye-opener. It is remarkable how just a little money can have a huge impact. We swung by an estate sale yesterday and my wife bought all the clothes in good shape for less than $20 and will drop them off on Monday. If more people that, it would likely wreck a lot of professional charities.

There is a machine that is entirely built around using poor people to pay affluent salaries.

I want to see a small, drab, low-rent cinder block windowless building with a loading dock in back and a security turnstile in front located proximate to a bus stop where the only clientele are FSA parasites.

Sort of like a very down-graded Day Old Bread shop where clients can get their dented cans and gray meat with their EBT cards.

Part of the payment for food will require some effort in humping boxes from the loading dock to the gondolas in the store front, or sweaping floors and stocking shelves.

My wife and I have seen that personally. When our daughter divorced her first husband (a total POS that later went to prison for conspiring to cook meth), she was destitute with a little 2 year old girl. She went to the Welfare Office and was told to get pregnant. She was indignant, and replied, "I'm not a looser and I'm not doing that." Needless to say, she never got a penny of Welfare money.

She and our grand-daughter came to live with us for a few years. She later met a great guy, they've raised a great family. My son-in-law raised our grand-daughter as his own.

I have a very similar experience. My daughter was evicted from her apartment because her abusive (soon to be ex-husband) took all their money. Multiple meetings with social workers, the judge was sympathetic, but gosh, can you believe that there is zero money available for rental assistance for battered single moms?

That was literally what they said. She was in an apartment complex that accepted Section 8, but she would have to be made homeless before she could apply and there was a waiting list. So all this money washing around, none of it able to help someone in dire need. Again, all this was extensively documented, and they still shut off the power and evicted her.

Absolutely useless. The only people who tried to help were the religious local charities who of course get slammed because they are the only ones who actually do the things and everyone goes there first.

The whole system is corrupt. Shut it down.

Sorry to recall the bad old days, but as an example, both of the DOs I know risked their licenses by treating Covid with remedies they had selected by considering the scientific studies: one used HCQ and the other used ivermectin. Both knew Remdesivir was harmful and wouldn't administer it.

One of these doctors recommended an effective and least harmful treatment for my IBS that I still use as needed, enteric-coated peppermint oil. My MD wanted to put me on lifetime pharmaceuticals that gave me heartburn.

I like DOs.

Our son has IBS (what the gastro called "the dustbin of bowel diseases), but he doesn't have spasms. What he has is lots and lots of diarrhea. Nothing stays in his colon for long. They don't know why but his bowel empties fast. We manage it with anti-diarrheals (don't always help) and keeping him away from certain foods that seem to make it worse.

For a minute there I had hope there was something else to do for him.

I screwed up my gut with a course of antibiotics a decade ago, and it was a low grade chronic issue. I can suggest Floristor (Saccharomyces boulardii is the cheaper generic) and Just Thrive Probiotic and Pre-biotic. It may or may not help, but at least it is not expensive.
Most of the probiotics have inulin in them that causes me terrible gas, but these two do not.

TecumsehTea, I also had dumping symptoms as well. I'd head straight to the bathroom after meals and the results looked like I hadn't even chewed my food. My limbs got skinny and my abdomen was bloated. I was really sick, but still not eligible for disability benefits.

Things that helped: enteric-coated peppermint oil, frequent walks, especially after meals, avoiding being seated for long periods, getting the best sleep I could, and changing my job. I just can't do a desk job, so I stick with jobs that are moderately active.

While out enjoying a few days of PTO before the next big push at work, I stopped off in Washington AR to look at the antebellum state park. A lady volunteering at the candle shop told how she was in IT and Tyson sent her job to India. She started her own business getting small merchants internet marketing exposure, developing eCom sites and helping them build their business.

She can afford now in terms of time and money to do things that she enjoys.

not all people respond to offshoring the same.

A good amount if it was financialization of the industry, where it was more profitable to finance than to build. This is caused in large part by the USD being the currency for international commerce. Since everyone needs dollars, then they are more valuable, and when that happens it is more expensive to make here than to buy it from overseas.
Second, regulations are often pushed by the big companies to force smaller companies out of competition because the smaller companies can't afford the cost of compliance. Often "the industry" is asked to help write such laws and the big ones have more pull. This reduces the breadth of the manufacturing and services, and often those companies are willing to boost their earnings by outsourcing overseas as well.
financialization is the big thing, it destroys companies and alienates industries, and it turns people who could be part of a company making things into low-grade, interchangeable service employees, and consumers scraping by.

I was in Beijing one time before a big international conference. At the beginning of the week the air was smoggy and grey and as the week progressed toward the conference it got much more clear. Coal plants were dialed down before foreign dignitaries arrived.

We went from a neighborhood of no kids to tons. This year we went through about 10 bags of candy, all the kids were dressed and polite and happy. It was very old fashioned and we loved it.

I know a bit off topic but anyone love a fit in the pocket travel point and shoot camera? Our last one died several years ago and we never replaced and Hubby isn’t wanting to always tote around his larger camera with all the lens.

398 TecumsehTea, you can find something at most places that carry supplements. Pepogest or Peppermint Soothe by Nature's Way, Peppermint Gels by Now are some I have found in my area. But it's got to be enteric coated or you end up relaxing the esophagus instead, leading to reflux.

I know some people here frown on this, but a fast can help. The gut starts self-repairing after about 30 hours. I don't think there's much additional benefit in going beyond 3 days. I'm talking *water only*. Drinking juice might just feed the gut bacteria causing the issues.

There are some really good blends of probiotics available these days, but it might require some medical help to see what particular blend would be most helpful in your son's case. I don't think the science is very advanced in that area, but they are starting to learn what overgrowths and/or deficiencies cause certain symptoms.

416 Weird that the same people who think it is wrong to limit executive pay have no problem with "excessive" wages as an excuse to gut whole communities.

Who decides how much is too much? If you can pay slave wages overseas, does that justify you forcing people in a prosperous society to accept a reduction in standard of living?

Why does that only apply to some of the people? What do the rich have to sacrifice, or are they morally better?

I saw a funny meme asking where people are storing all these crazy huge holiday decorations we now have. The sixteen foot skeletons, the blow up lawn decor...do they have a house just to store their decorations! I laughed. But where DO you keep a giant skeleton??
