Talk about your historical snobbery. There are outbreaks of lice at even our snobbiest schools all the time. My own experience gave me the impression that there's a niche of healthcare workers who make a pretty good thing out of going around and treating the kids.

68 I enjoy his realistic portrayal of people: faces, expressions, postures. And the detail of the clothing and accourements. But what strikes most is his use of color and light, always appropriate to the scene and the mood of the painting. The paintings of everyday life in this style and period is a visual history lesson.

I couldn't find any still life paintings by Murillo. Too bad. They would have been wonderful.

When Michael Jordon was a thing, our oldest boy wanted his head shaved like Jordon's.

I thought it was silly, but eh, why not?

So, next haircut...shaved.

Of course, then little brother wanted his head shaved. So, it was shaved heads around here for a couple of years.

It turns out other boys in their classes thought it was cool and so wanted their heads shaved to be like Mike.

92 The art....
Nice.

Head lice? My boy spawn never got them. His hair was buzzed off less than a third of an inch long. Lice can't hang out on hair that short. The girl spawn however did have them once. It was a helluva battle getting rid of it. My niece got them repeatedly. Her hair was like a magnet for them. I've never been infested personally in spite of being the one who had to de-bug the girl spawn. I have heard that lice prefer darker hair. Idk if that's true or not. I was also dying my hair regularly back then and I've heard that the chemicals in hair dye are toxic to lice.

Painted roughly 1675, the detail so fine & the light so perfect it could be a photograph. Very nice for a Monday.

However, the painting also took me to thinking about one of my grandmothers many decades ago and her insistence on getting out her comb to perform a weekly head check for nits on us once we started elementary school. 😱

I'd probably pass hanging today's selection.

Thanks.

136 Willowed, but this is too silly for me to ignore:
-----
[Notable sodomite Nick Fuentes] said he admired [Comrade Stalin's] efficiency in industrializing Russia.
----
What "efficiency?"

The key salient feature of Stalin's """industrialization""" of the Soviet Union was the collective farm. The rest was all vague pronouncements about tractors and electrification.

He believed collective farms would produce agricultural surpluses for the new urban worker, and bring in badly needed foreign currency reserves for the capital investments those workers would need to create their jobs.

He referred to them in industrial terms as "grain factories" modeled on the emerging American industrial agriculture methods. But an agrarian society could no more imitate that than a monkey could play a violin. At the cost of 10 million hardy Russian peasants, he induced a famine and ended up plundering the Hermitage to increase foreign reserves - one year in the early '30s, art sales to Andrew Mellon alone were a third of Russian exports.

None of his industrial plans came to fruition until massive infusions of American cash for the war effort, and the USSR GDP still lagged the West forever after.

Harrison Ford has broken his usual political silence to deliver a scathing attack on President Trump’s environmental policies, calling the president’s approach to climate change one that “scares the shit out of me” in a new interview with The Guardian.

“It scares the shit out of me. The ignorance, the hubris, the lies, the perfidy,” Ford told The Guardian. “[Trump] knows better, but he’s an instrument of the status quo and he’s making money, hand over fist, while the world goes to hell in a handbasket.”

Ford escalated his criticism further, making an extraordinary comparison about Trump’s place in history: “It’s unbelievable. I don’t know of a greater criminal in history.”

Again, many decades ago my family had a lot of kids who loved the WWF (?).

During the summer, they were allowed to shave off most of their hair but had 'rat tails,' too. Then they asked the barbers to create thunderbolts into the very short hair that remained on the sides of their heads, and then the thunderbolts were made very dark (markers??) for real effect in on their scalps.

Come the 1st week of September, all had hair cuts that were back to Catholic school acceptable.

"To industrialize the cities we must first industrialize the farms, like the Americans do. They did it with capitalism, which is inferior to socialism, which you know from reading our tracts. That's it. That's the sum total of Stalin's awesome plan, and it yielded predictable results. The only thing he ever did right was get invaded and ravaged by the same Army his wealthy Western opponents happened to be fighting.

They were going to use it again, so I went over to see if/how much work it would take.

The moment you opened the door, fleas in the dozens were on your socks. Squirrels had chewed their way into the attic and made it their playground. Making a hasty retreat, the exterminators were called before anyone else went in there.

266 Grok: "kadam" is approximately one foot (12 inches), and the staff is meant to be six kadam high, or 72 inches (6 feet), but reduced by one kadam to 5 feet (60 inches) as a gesture of respect to the Hebrew God.

This adjustment results in a staff that appears towering over Indiana Jones in the film, creating a visual inconsistency, as it implies Jones is only about four feet tall in the movie's universe.

The script originally had the line as "add one kadam" in the Revised Fifth Draft, which would have made the Nazi staff shorter, aligning better with the visual.
The change to "take back" was likely made during filming or post-production, possibly to emphasize the religious significance of the Ark's location, but it introduced the visual error.

That's it. That's the sum total of Stalin's awesome plan, and it yielded predictable results. The only thing he ever did right was get invaded and ravaged by the same Army his wealthy Western opponents happened to be fighting.

287 So Deckard is a robot or not?

If you haven’t read the book, I’d recommend it. The movie follows it surprisingly closely, given that they literally switched the title out for another (also great) book.

The original book title was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It is sometimes today marketed under the title Blade Runner, but if you accidentally buy the real Blade Runner by Alan E. Nourse that’s no loss.

In the book (this is not a spoiler, it comes up early), even humans are basically robots. Not in the physical sense of being made up of artificial parts, but in that they literally program their moods using a device called a “Penfield Mood Organ”. Further, humanity no longer looks to the stars; they’re not even visible from Earth.

It’s one of PKD’s more straightforward books.

A 500 acre farm in Russia would have 50 people working it from the farm Supervisor, three Asst Supervisors and on down. A 500 acre farm in Colfax Washington would have a family of five and a couple of hands who would go from farm to farm. Yields far more as well.

The "blade runner" is the mule who moves the surgical supplies from a dealer to the site where the operation is performed.

Yup. The United States of Blade Runner has implemented a very unpopular national health care law that both discourages people from seeking health care and discourages doctors from providing it, while also creating a monstrous bureaucracy more interested in maintaining itself than in staving off potential epidemics before they become unmanageable.

And then, against the backdrop of this mess of draconian government incompetence comes the Shanghai Flu…

“…the whole program was a bid to bribe people into submitting to sterilization as the price of healthcare, and a whole segment of the population wouldn’t bribe. God knows how many people have turned to the underground, they must number in the millions. It’s a lousy brand of medicine, nobody can do good surgery on a kitchen table, but doctors and patients alike are into it because it’s the only sane way to resist the government program.”

338 There’s talking with your hands and then there’s whatever this is, which strongly suggests an inability to hold still, uncontrollable arm movements, restlessness and twitches. The obvious answer is cocaine. Cocaine seems to be right up Newsom’s alley. He’s often hyper, over-intense and agitated. If he’d been on cocaine during his time as governor, it would explain a whole lot about how the state is run.

But a second option, especially for a politician desperately trying to build his brand by going everywhere and doing everything, is amphetamines. It would explain the bizarre arm and hand movements all too well. This is a guy who is overdoing it, not getting much sleep and spinning out of control. Sometimes he starts yelling during interviews.
