Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Trump: Nuke the Filibuster, Pass the CRAround the country, air flights are facing 2-3 hour delays because air traffic controllers aren't being paid. The heads of United and Delta demanded the Democrats pass the clean CR.Delta and United Airlines are demanding that Democrats stop holding the government hostage and vote for the clean continuing resolution Republicans already passed, warning that the standoff is punishing federal workers and starting to rattle the economy. Speaking to reporters Thursday, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby praised air traffic controllers, TSA agents, and FAA staff for keeping flights running under crushing pressure but said Democrats' inaction is pushing them to the brink. "They've minimized delays. Fewer than two percent of flights have been delayed so far because of air traffic control shortage," Kirby said. "They've done a great job, but it's putting stress on people. It's not fair to those people. It's also putting stress on the economy." Now at Day 30, Kirby said, the Democrat-led shutdown is beginning to show real economic fallout. "The first couple of weeks had no impact on the economy, but as every day goes by, the impacts start to grow," he said. "Airlines are a pretty good real-time indicator of the economy, and we're starting to see minor but steep booking impact. We put the whole economy at risk." Kirby said he has no interest in Democrats' attempts to spin the fight into a healthcare debate, calling instead for Congress to "pass a clean CR" and hash out policy differences "behind closed doors, without putting American workers and the economy at risk." Delta issued a similar demand, urging lawmakers to "immediately pass a clean continuing resolution," adding that "missed paychecks only increase the stress on these essential workers, many of whom are already working mandatory overtime to keep our skies safe and secure."The CBO estimates that the Democrats have already succeeded in shaving $14 billion out of the US economy due to the chaos they've caused. Trump now says: Nuke the filibuster, and pass the CR with a simple majority. President Trump is done letting Democrats hold the government hostage. On Thursday, he called on Senate Republicans to "play their Trump card" and invoke the nuclear option -- scrapping the filibuster and ending the month-long shutdown with a simple majority vote. "It is now time for the Republicans to play their 'TRUMP CARD,' and go for what is called the Nuclear Option -- get rid of the filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!" Trump wrote in a fiery Truth Social post after returning from a five-day swing through Asia. He said world leaders kept asking how "the Democrats SHUT DOWN the United States of America" and why Republicans allowed it to happen. "Majority Leader John Thune, and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, are doing a GREAT job," Trump said, "but the Democrats are Crazed Lunatics that have lost all sense of WISDOM and REALITY." He blamed the standoff on a "sick form" of Trump Derangement Syndrome -- the obsession, he argued, that's driving Democrats to damage the country rather than give his administration a win.As expected, Thune is refusing to nuke the filibuster, because he believes, naively and insanely, that the Democrats will not themselves end the filibuster the moment it becomes useful for them to do so. Politico: Republicans are quickly tamping down President Donald Trump's call to eliminate the Senate filibuster as they try to keep pressure on Democrats to end the 31-day government shutdown. GOP leaders believed Thursday they were on track to reopen agencies as soon as next week. Then Trump threw a fresh complication into their laps overnight when he revived calls for Republicans to invoke the "nuclear option" and eliminate the 60-vote threshold for passing most legislation. Without it, Republican senators could reopen the government on their own. But many GOP senators have vocally defended the filibuster, including Majority Leader John Thune, calling the 60-vote rule a fundamental feature of the Senate and one that works to conservatives' benefit in the long run. Thune has defended the filibuster multiple times during the shutdown, calling it a "bad idea" to suggest eliminating it. "The 60-vote threshold has protected this country," he said earlier this month. The Democrats have eliminated the use of the filibuster every single time the Republicans used it to block them. Republicans used it to block federal court nominations; Harry Reid nuked it. It's crazy to think the Democrats would ever allow Republicans to pull their own shutdown stunt in the future. The GOP is always being taught lessons, but never, ever learns. It might not matter. Sources say that Democrats plan on ending the stupid shutdown after election day. So shutting down the government is officially, admittedly just a base-stoking electioneering stunt. Stephen NeukamSome unrelated matters: A Mexican senator says Trump esta dijando la verdad. A prominent Mexican lawmaker has delivered a stunning rebuke of her country's leadership, agreeing with President Trump's long-standing claim that Mexico is effectively controlled by drug cartels. In a video message posted this week, Mexican Senator Lily Téllez declared, "He is not lying -- it's the truth, and the people of Mexico know it." Téllez, a leading member of the opposition National Action Party (PAN), said that Trump's assessment "doesn't shame us as good, honest Mexicans -- it exposes the corrupt ruling class of MORENA," the leftist party led by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his successor, President Claudia Sheinbaum. "Claudia, you don't represent the Mexican people," Téllez said bluntly. "You represent the MORENA Cartel. You lack any dignity." The senator accused López Obrador and Sheinbaum of colluding with powerful drug syndicates to secure political power and then allowing them to expand their grip on the nation. "The cartel problem didn't begin with MORENA, but under them, it has exploded," she said. "They surrendered national sovereignty and absolute power to organized crime."

I suspect this is just meaningless bully pulpit stuff.
He communicates with Thune directly. Vance actually went to Thune and straightened him out on some things in a meeting. This is, "We'll do drastic things to stop Democrat obstruction," in public while just largely being fine with things behind closed doors. Trump has spent the last few weeks busy with international affairs, where he actually does care. I have two comments:
1. This is show theater. Trump has no intention of nuking the filibuster. It's more negotiating tactics and leverage. Democraps surely do not want the filibuster nuked now, when they are not in charge. 2. I highly doubt any flight delays over the last few days were because of ATC not being paid. As I mentioned in the previous post, there has long been an ATC shortage. Plus, there was terrible weather across large swaths of the country in the past week. I flew in and out of CLT (from EWR) without any issues, despite the storms, other than the usual 15-30 minute delays for something or other. 3. Be very skeptical of media reports or interested parties like Delta Airlines blaming Problem X on the shutdown. Posted by: Elric The Blade at October 31, 2025 03:29 PM (iFTx/) 30

I have come around to narrowly nuking cloture for Continuing (budget) Resolutions, because circumstances have changed, and now it would be an immensely popular political winner.
I was against it because then the competitive advantage for CRs would make them even more tempting than they were already, and I pictured a future where 500 years later, the budget is still just a CR of the 2024 budget. However, it is of course possible to have a short CR to keep things going while you negotiate the actual budget bills, which is what the Republican caucus very reasonably attempted, and should have been able to do. I am still against broadly nuking the filibuster as a whole, not because I think Democrats won't, but because it would be a political loser, or at least less of a winner. It would add political cost to no greater benefit over a narrow nuke, which we already know is possible, because it has been gradually nuked over time from just excepting Supreme Court justices to now excepting nominations for the judiciary and cabinet members. But proving to dimwits that it really was the Democrats blocking Republicans from paying food stamps and air traffic controllers is a massive win. Essential employees, unless Trump has directed otherwise, do NOT get paid even when working during a shutdown. They have to wait for payment til the end of the shutdown. This is why Trump was "finding money" for the active military, who are always essential but not always paid.
Exempt employees work and DO get paid on time, although at this point, that is also no longer happening for everyone exempt - aka, the State Department cannot pay its Passport approval people and no one has reported why (although guesses can be made). After years of pearl clutching about the filibuster and keeping it, Trump and republicans have used the “nuclear option” twice to ram through hundreds of cabinet. Now the mask is off. They’re gonna get rid of it forever.
That’s a mighty nice filibuster you have there. It’d be a shame if you got rid of it in time for democrats to use it to pass any number of long standing priorities That’s assuming there’s elections in the future that are free and fair. Remember his “joke” to Zelensky about “no votes when at war? Okay better remember that one.” As he is manufacturing justification to invade Venezuela now. Republicans have been trying to sell the point that the Democrats are keeping the Government closed. If they use the Nuclear Option, then that destroys their narrative, because the average person will then be told 'see, the Republicans had the power all along, and they failed to use it 30 days ago." if the Democrats did this in 2010 when they had a f---ing supermajority, we would have had single payer healthcare. Bruh, it already is. Posted by: DPICM Ummmm, did you just sock an Artillery Munition? Overview of DPICM in Vietnam What is DPICM? The Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition (DPICM) is an artillery round designed to release multiple submunitions upon detonation. It is effective against both armored vehicles and personnel, hence the term "dual-purpose." Historical Context Development: DPICM projectiles were developed in the late 1950s, with the first model, the 105 mm M444, entering service in 1961. Usage in Vietnam: During the Vietnam War, DPICM was used extensively. It was found to be significantly more effective than standard high-explosive rounds. For example, it required only 1.7 DPICM rounds to kill an enemy soldier, compared to 13.6 high-explosive rounds. Types of DPICM Rounds Caliber Variants: DPICM rounds were available in various calibers, including 105 mm, 155 mm, and 203 mm. Submunitions: A typical 155 mm DPICM shell could contain up to 88 submunitions, which would spread over a wide area to maximize impact. Democrats are about to get FAFO’d on SNAP and WIC. It’s causing a deeper dive on who is in the program. The states are going to lose their lawsuit on providing information that clearly shows people who are ineligible under federal law are in their programs. Courts don’t even have the authority to intervene in that process and it’s going g to get knocked down by SCOTUS. Congress and the executive branch has conditioned receipt of that aid, and ensuring those conditions are met is a fundamental duty.
That’s before we get to federal workers and the military. This is costing Democrats dearly and was a gross miscalculation. Posted by: Marcus T at October 31, 2025 03:52 PM (WT51m) 187

- take away the Bill of Rights during COVID - spies on their opponents including Congress - used fake dossiers to try and lock up the Republican presidential nominee and destroy his family - used the courts to put overly jail people for disagreeing with them - conditioned receipt of aid based on political views - undermined an election with unsecured mail in ballots, harvesting and procedural subversions to steal an election That’s just for starters. Lots of angles to this ... Trump raising possibility that GOP nuke it to end the shutdown could shift blame under a claim that they're keeping government closed BUT at the same time the Democrats and media understand what it means and can't jump onto that narrative/encouragement for GOP to nuke it.
If they do nuke it, Dems have NO leverage when this CR runs out in three weeks. NONE. No extension of subsidies whatsoever. GOP just passes another CR with no Dem input. From there, think what you could do if you just nuked it completely. End vote-by-mail nationwide, require voter ID in every state, exclude illegals from the census, whatever. If you did that it would be almost impossible for Dems to ever win any branch again because they're so concentrated and reliant on ballot fraud and illegals both voting and being used for apportionment. Risk of them retaliating is less when they end up with no plausible path to retaking power absent a return to some form of sanity. Posted by: the dandy at October 31, 2025 04:05 PM (8l8nW) 263

Went to dinner with another couple and my buddy got chicken with "Alabama White Sauce" as one of the sauces. We discussed what it could be. He said it tasted like mayonnaise and we concluded it probably was mayonnaise based. I made a mental note to look up "Alabama White Sauce", but I did NOT get to it. That took about 45 minutes to unwind. The internet says ground crews are pissed there because of a $12.50 minimum wage. They're union but the entire operation is contracted out to complicate things and keep the hired help in poverty. Charlotte handles FIFTY EIGHT MILLION PASSENGERS A YEAR. I flew from Dallas to LA today. Flight was on time; early even. Both airports kinda deserted…. People staying away because they’re worried about delays? I dunno but today was a perfect travel day for me…..

>>So why is Schumer doing something that hurts his very voting base?
Make it make sense. __ It all comes down to illegal immigration. All of it. Dems have spent years flooding the country with illegals. So much so that illegals ARE there base. If they can't deliver on free health care for illegals, THAT hurts their real base. That is what the shutdown is all about. Posted by: Frasier Crane at October 31, 2025 04:23 PM (bNf8H) 362

Been looking at stories about the people lining up in cars to get free food from food banks.
Noted that there are a lot of pretty new cars doing that. Guess it is easier to afford a car payment if taxpayers are funding your monthly food bill. Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable and Totally Unserious at October 31, 2025 04:24 PM (xvV+O) 366

We paid NGOs to bring illegals here We paid NGOs to help illegals get through the courts Then we directly gave illegals free healthcare, food, housing, and Obamaphones. What a shock that millions of people came here...and the debt exploded. Posted by: 18-1 at October 31, 2025 04:25 PM (sKqQm) 368

Posted by: Axeman at October 31, 2025 04:26 PM (krQz2) I'd heard his name, but never listened to him nor knew anything about him. 235 Yeah, I'm still thinking he really died right before the election and this is his clone running amok and they haven't figured out a good way to take him out. That just seems more likely than a true lefty 'Fortunate Son' Dem having a stroke to the point he can't answer questions or read a teleprompter, then shortly afterwards emerge not just coherent but with a blossoming of integrity on a political wing that any half-wit realizes is career suicide.
Posted by: bearski at October 31, 2025 03:59 PM (Bhsk7) There is a non-disprovable hypothesis that the private security industry's body double service -- originally to fake out paparazzi/stalkers/assassins on your actual destination -- morphed and metastasized into a full-spectrum service that the rich and/or powerful (incl. U.S. Senators) can use for damn near anything. Fetterman is held up as a non-disconfirming example who may have been originally hired by his staff to keep up appearances, since he had several different looks and demeanors in his early recovery (or "recovery") from his stroke. Maybe he never recovered, one opportunistic actor went rogue and took over, and everyone involved has too much to lose to call him out. Posted by: SciVo at October 31, 2025 04:47 PM (VB5xp) 375

Stupid question. Why can't they just proceed with the CR, and when it fails cloture, force the Democrats to actually stand up and begin speaking for days on end? If they stop speaking, doesn't that allow for the process to continue? Don't just meekly say "we don't have 60 votes, so we can't get anything passed", use the filibuster as it was originally designed and intended to be used.
