Wednesday Morning Rant

Hatred

The insanity surrounding Trump's renovation of the White House is truly remarkable to behold. The meltdown among the leftist establishment has beggared belief. Trump is doing a major renovation to the property. It happens from time to time. But this time, it is of course monstrous and an assault on decency, motherhood and the American Way.

This crazy overreaction is for two reasons. The first and most obvious, of course, is the simple fact that it is Trump doing it. It doesn't matter if the renovation is valuable and useful. It doesn't matter if Trump finagled a way to pay for it without taxpayer money. All that matters is that the Bad Orange Man is doing it. For many people, that's as far as it goes. Trump, therefore bad. It needn't be more complicated than that.

For many people, however, there is a a reason beyond #OrangeManBad that they are freaking out over the ballroom. It's in part because of Trump, but it goes deeper. The rage being expressed by some of the critics of the addition is because the project is not hateful. It is not deliberately offensive to normal people. These people are having conniptions not just because it is Trump's project, but because normal people won't hate it - and the proper purpose of architecture is spite and contempt for normal people. If it isn't offensive the peasant class, it's bad architecture - and by this standard, the new ballroom is very bad architecture.

Talking Points Memo (published through Yahoo! rather than its own site for some reason) goes down this road. It starts out as bog-standard TDS before getting to the real point:

Since re-taking office, Trump has filled the Oval Office with gold-colored tchotchkes, began work on a $200 million ballroom, and paved over the Rose Garden with concrete. Last week, news broke that Trump is considering building a grand triumphal arch in Arlington to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. And in accordance with a March EO to "reinstate ... pre-existing monuments," two D.C.-area Confederate statues that were taken down in 2023 are being restored. On Monday, Trump took a literal bulldozer to the government when crews began demolishing part of the White House's East Wing to make room for the president's ballroom extension.
Classic stuff. But it isn't just TDS over at TPM:
Trump is also leaning on the idea that architecture can be used -- as groups like the Daughters of the Confederacy realized in the post-Reconstruction era -- to hearken back to a whiter past.

"The classical architecture stuff is a dog whistle for white nationalists," said Martin, who co-edited a book titled "Architecture against Democracy."

Architecture in America has been associated with "an American public, a democratic body, a democratic society," Martin told TPM, "but also an imperial society, a slave-owning society, a commercial society. Classical architecture covers all of this."

Now we're getting somewhere! I love a good, solid intersectional bigotry argument!
The president's architectural EO is in keeping with this reclamation of a bygone culture shaped by American expansionism, strict gender and racial hierarchies, xenophobia, and less advanced scientific development.

"Architecture speaks silently," Martin told TPM. "The attempt to revive classical architecture under current political conditions is an attempt that speaks silently about dismantling not just the ideas that were expressed in 2020, but the institutions of civil rights. And so it speaks silently the language of white nationalism. And that is well known, but it's very difficult to literally demonstrate or prove. That's why it's so effective, because it's easily deniable."

Classic! "It may not look racist - and in fact, it might seem insane that we think that it is - but trust us, bro, it totally is! And, because they can't help going Full Godwin, they end it on a high note:
Martin called the proposed triumphal arch in Arlington "Napoleonic" and part of "an imperial tradition."

Powerful leaders throughout history, from Napoleon to Louis XIV, have called upon architects to construct imposing, enduring physical manifestations of their political projects, Wilson of Columbia pointed out.

"Adolf Hitler had Albert Speer, right?"

Gotta love it. But the best line in the whole thing is this one:
By seeking to assert control over civic architecture, Trump is creating a physical testament to his destruction of democracy, Reinhold Martin, an architecture historian and Columbia University Professor, told TPM. It's an aesthetic offshoot of Project 2025's goal to gut public welfare and government services, Martin said.

"It's a project of demolition, and that's why I'm saying the laughable but also obviously very tragic and historically disastrous outcome of this would be a series of empty basically stage sets," Martin said, "empty political monuments, buildings with nothing in them because they fired everybody."

Traditional western architecture that most people like is "a testament" to the "destruction of democracy." This isn't even about Trump anymore, it's about pure hatred. Hatred for the peasant classes who like the wrong things. Hatred of anyone who advocates for - or even merely likes - traditional things. This is a sneering, contemptuous hatred of western culture and any who desire its continuation. And it isn't new. Leftist culture warriors have long seen architecture as a major battleground in the war against the public. These same people adore imposing, oppressive architectural monstrosities like the Boston City Hall, the Seattle Experience Music Project, the Kunsthaus Graz and, for that matter, Obama's presidential library but absolutely despise anything traditional, normal or pleasant.

Architecture is supposed to oppress people like the Boston City Hall. It is supposed to be significant through misshapen, garish ugliness like the Experience Music Project. It is supposed to symbolically - and literally - devour its traditional surroundings like the Kunsthaus Graz. It's supposed to be overbearing, misplaced and unpleasant like the Obama library. It is not supposed to be something people like, it is supposed to be something that people "need" - with humanity-hating academic leftists defining what those needs are.

So enjoy pointing and laughing at the pearl-clutching over Trump's new ballroom. I certainly am. But never forget that lurking just beneath the surface is the real reason for the horrified reaction. It isn't merely TDS, it's hatred. Hatred of the West. Hatred of tradition. Hatred of national pride. Hatred of arrogant peasants who refuse to listen to their betters.

Hatred of you.

33 Architecture is supposed to oppress people like the Boston City Hall.

Since I live in MA, this strikes home for me.

The purpose of the BCA is not just to oppress people, both physically and mentally, but to demoralize them. It's a large, impersonal block with no obvious welcoming point, which is the desired affect.

You, the milch cow, are to fear your government. You are to cringe in self-flagellationj at the very thought of opposing them.

The Boston City Hall is the architectural equivalent of Stinkfinger or Fang Fang's boy toy's sneers about how they have all the bombs and airplanes. We rule, you obey.

I have a lot more to say, but I'll keep it for another day.

I do like architecture of some other, non-western cultures. Even Islam, as bad as it is, managed not to eff up the architectural traditions it inherited from the Greeks and Persians.

But this modern-day stuff doesn't have a connection with any culture, other then a culture of E. coli because some architect pulled it out of his/her/xer ass.

73 >>The purpose of the BCA is not just to oppress people, both physically and mentally, but to demoralize them. It's a large, impersonal block with no obvious welcoming point, which is the desired affect.

After graduating college with a psych degree, I had an interview at an acute care mental facility not far from the BCA. It was similarly brutalist - all concrete and glass, haphazardly varied levels and doors. It took me forever to enter the d@mn building. There was no obvious entry, and it had numerous stairs that led to small upper patios with locked doors. Just the pressure of needing to get to the inside before my scheduled interview was unbearable, like it was a test or game, I truly felt like a rat in a maze. What was worse was realizing that this is where the have mental patients, that these poor patients were tormented like this every day.

78 Part of me thinks this whole thing is stupid - We OBVIOUSLY need a formal ballroom in which to host foreign dignitaries for the big, showy state functions. Quitcherbitchen, lefties.

And then the rest of me LOVES that they just can't help themselves. I don't think any of this rage and impotent flailure (deliberate) helps Democrats with Normals. And he just keeps provoking them, like a master. Trump constantly chooses the battlespace, takes a decision, and forces the left to further reveal itself as a giant web of violent, deceitful, screeching harpies.

They can't help it. They can't stop. And he's an absolute maestro, playing the left like a fiddle. They operate only at Trump's whim, and they have absolutely no idea that's true. HE decides what they scream about. HE determines where they riot. It's beautiful.

And the destruction of that is symbolic--a very powerful symbol--of the end of their post-war order.

The order that saw the permanent power of the technocrats, the experts, the "right side of history" folks, the credentialed and elite.
Which order has been utterly destructive to the common man, the working man, the middle class--Americans and America.

And that's why the left is having such a visceral, hysterical reaction--Trump is tearing down their symbols of power and replacing it with one for America and Americans.

All six members of the Commission of Fine Arts, appointed by former President Biden, have been dismissed by President Trump.

>Newsweek, Trump Firing Commission Overseeing White House Ballroom Sparks Fury, Published Oct 29, 2025

In part and beneath What to Know -

"The commission was established by Congress in 1910 "to advise the federal government on matters pertaining to the arts and national symbols, and to guide the architectural development of Washington, D.C.," according to its website.

It traditionally includes a mix of architects and urban planners who have reviewed and voted on major projects at the White House.

The six members fired on Tuesday had been appointed to four-year terms—some of which would have extended through 2028—by former President Joe Biden.

Biden in 2021 ousted Trump appointees from the commission, as well as the National Capital Planning Commission, with Biden officials saying the moves were to diversify the panels.

Bruce Becker, an architect who was appointed to the commission last year and fired Tuesday, told The Post that the commission had expected to review Trump’s planned ballroom."

The Civil War was an amazing documentary, and one largely sympathetic to southern commoner sensibilities. Ken Burns as a man went off the rails after that, constantly trying to atone for such a horrible "sin" as making Confederates seem human and conflicted instead of cartoon villains. 3. They can't control him.

The Left had oppressed everyone within the political-media-academic spheres to the point that they all used the same loaded, bias language, with dissenters only allowed to quibble with the most minor stuff or get banned/banished. Along comes Trump and he refuses to use their framing and their language (e.g. he says "killing a baby" not "reproductive care."). He is his own man, completely.

They worked so dang hard since the 60's to create this matrix and this dude crashes in, crushes it, and the laughs in their faces when they try to stop him. They can't shame him, cancel him, make him apologize to protect himself and his loved once - it is INFURIATING!

It isn't 'just' the left that hates him.

There are many, nominally right of center Republicans in Congress that hate him too. They ran interference during his first term. They're not as vocal, or actively involved in running interference this term mostly because it doesn't poll well.

But... Trump's disassembling the political machine in the capitol city that has made multi-millionaires out of everyone associated with government there.

Hatred of national pride. Hatred of arrogant peasants who refuse to listen to their betters.
----
Yup.
Since WWII, the left has had exclusive control over the symbols of American greatness.
All the brutalist buildings they built that emulate the soul-crushing spirit of Communist architecture; forcing abstract "art"; and deliberately ugly "public" art.
And sneering at those old symbols of pride--the flag, the Fourth of July, etc.

And Trump is tearing it all down.
All of the symbols of their permanent power.
Just as they embedded the deep state, no matter who is in the White House, they were in power, this is the same:
No matter who is in the White House, their buildings, their "monuments" to their power remained.
No longer.
This isn't just a temporary eviction--this is burning down their house and forcing them to watch.
Good.

The oligarchs already have their bunkers. Instead, Trump is obviously losing his faculties and becoming difficult to deal with. In 'The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice' by Yasujiro Ozu, one of the salarymen explains the popularity of pachinko really well.

They spend their whole day being forced into structure and submission and hard work, so being able to sit down, watch the random bounce of the steel balls, and get the occasional win with music and flashing lights is very soothing.

Having watched Texas elections closely for the last 30 years, I can safely say that, in spite of all of the sturm and drang, they have been very predictable. In statewide races, there is a base 44% that will always vote Dem, no matter who the candidate is. A moderate candidate who isn't offensive can do slightly better than that; Allred got 44.6% against Cruz last time. A media darling like Beto who could throw nearly a billion dollars into his race pushed it up to 48%. A candidate whose only following is on the two coasts, like Abortion Barbie a few years ago, drops down to 39%. No Democrat in a statewide race for the last 30 years has fallen outside those parameters.

But I think Jasmine will test the low side.

384 The reason I like watching The Godfather (number one only) is picking up on little things. When Michael is hiking through Corleone and asks where all the men are he is told "vendettas". There's a plaque with the same name as one of my goombah classmates. Also like the way they handled James Caan's height challenge. Note you don't see much of him below the waist until the BiL beat down, and they needed a stand in for that in case Caan got carried away.
