On Fat Generals and Admirals [Diogenes]

About a month ago the Secretary of War (I just love that!) laid down the law about being overweight and out of shape. No more fat generals and admirals. “It's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading Commands around the country and the world. It is not who we are.”

He is absolutely right.

Some thoughts:

First and foremost, fat soldiers do not survive on the battlefield. Multiple studies were done back in the late 80’s about the success of Units going through a “Training Rotation” at the National Training Center at Ft Irwin CA. A Rotation was a 30 day exercise at Ft Irwin doing a variety of battlefield tasks (attack, defend, movement to contact, etc.) This was, and remains, the single best test of a Unit’s warfighting capability. Using lasers and computers, it is as realistic as it can be. Tactics are tested and the Units fight against a real Opposing Force (OPFOR) unit that is stationed there full time. The Rotations are hard, and they are meant to be. The studies measured the ability of a Unit to “win” (survive and defeat the OPFOR) against the Unit’s overall scores on the Physical Training Test (PT Test…push-ups, sit-ups and a 2 mile run). The results showed a direct correlation. The better the score, the more likely they were to defeat the OPFOR. This study covered dozens of Battalion-sized units over several years.

The bottom line: fit soldiers and leaders did better. They could operate longer without sleep; leaders made better and faster decisions; they could read the battlefield better and outmaneuver the OPFOR to defeat them. And I saw this in fact during Desert Storm.

The Army leadership noticed. The emphasis on PT has always been there, but standards were examined and changed.

The Secretary’s point about standards is correct. Not male or female per se, but a single set of standards. If you can meet the standard for a particular job, then you can enlist for that job. Artillery shells can weigh up to 100 pounds. In combat the loaders on an artillery piece may have to lift hundreds of shells over a period of hours. On tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, it is common to see one “throw” a track. It is up to the crew to repair it and track pads weigh between 45-60 pounds each. The whole set can run over 5 tons. Not an easy job and no standing around. Get it done!

It is the same for the rest of the Army. If attacked, can you fight back? Can you carry boxes of ammo to a fighting position? Or carry a buddy back to an aide station? We are all in it. Army…Marines…Air Force…Coasties. We fight as a Team.

I could go on.

The point of Secretary Hegseth’s talk was to set a standard for the Leadership. If the troops must be fit, they needed to be fit as well. I think everyone recognizes that a man or woman at 52 years of age isn’t the same as when they were 32. But they can still be fit and meet a standard.

Lastly, and this is important. The Secretary’s speech was not aimed at just the Pentagon. It was a message to the American people, our Allies, and our future adversaries. America’s military will be fit to fight.

The problem is the entrenched rot in the military, the coddling of perfumed prince officers and slavish embrace of every soul-destroying, unit-dissolving socio-tyrannic flavor of the month. That is not something that can be changed permanently within the space of a single POTUS term.

47 Going way back, the USMC PFT when I was in gave a little break at certain ages. For example, a Marine over age 36 might get an extra minute for a three mile run. There was an age where a Marine would be exempt but I can't remember any of the real old guys (and we had a few over fifty) not taking the test.

With all due respect to the sailors, I doubt that's a good idea. Steam has real limitations, and we're gradually working the kinks out of EMALS. When they're more or less in their final state, they'll have very significant advantages.

Note well it isn’t that females don’t make fine military service members, it’s the false narrative that humans are interchangeable meat-sticks. Men and women are different, and not just the plumbing. During World War II the WAC billets had fences and razor wire around the compounds. There is a reason for that.

74 All the PT tests are age adjusted, so no one is expecting older officers or enlisted to match the standards of 20 year olds. However, if you are going to be telling soldiers/sailors that they will be discharged because they didn't pass the PT test or the weight standard, or the ever-golden "You don't look good in your uniform", you better be in shape yourself. If not, you kill morale in the people who are left. I've seen this myself, and the resentment in the ranks was palpable. Holding everyone to the standards as written applies not only to the PT standards but the performance standards as well. Why is this so hard to understand?

I'm seeing these rotund DEI chicks with gunts, and a few blubberous dudes waddling down the street and I'm thinking how the fuck are they still there. A kid I know who spent his time in ROTC, and his father is a colonel, and is not heavy by any stretch of the imagination wanted to join the airforce. They told him he was too heavy (!!??). He went into the army instead. Then I see this parade of fat bodies walking in loose formations and I'm thinking this has to be a joke. Not sure who the buoys were, but they need some serious PT.

Somebody noted a few days ago that we have already crossed the Rubicon.

Until the Democratic Party completely reforms itself, if the Democrats regain control, you will see a level of repression absolutely unprecedented in American history.

Take what happened after January 6th, and multiply that by at least x10,000.

You already have senior Democrats talking about arresting and prosecuting everyone who works for ICE - and that is just the beginning of what they have planned.

You'll have mass "treason" trials for Republican office holders, and everyone else prominent who the D's don't like.

Think Stalin in 1938.

The conclusion the D's took from losing in 2024 is that they could have prevented it if they had put more a lot more Republicans on trial and done it earlier.

Like it or not, going back to the pre-Trump political order is not an option.

My first job in the Army was platoon leader of an Ammunition Platoon for an eight inch artillery battalion. Those projectiles weighed 200 lbs. Had three Samoan troops who would pick one up (by the fuze ring) in each hand and run around the truck. Slowest guy had to buy the bier. Great soldiers too.

McCoy in Wisconsin or Norway, and trained to emulate Soviet Spetznaz. Army units would rotate through to fight us. We never, ever lost. In fact, always winning was, I think, intended, to light a fire under the guys training against us, make em work harder, understand what they'd be up against etc.

High heels aren't authorized for men under AR670-1, nor are they authorized for wear with BDU/ACUs. So in reality, that was an unlawful order, if it was in fact an order from higher. Mandatory PT every morning along with guidance from nutritionists and access to personal trainers. It typically took 12-18 months to admin discharge someone for failing standards so they had plenty of time to comply if they wanted to.

Apparently at some time after I retired in 1999 they quit enforcing standards.

The fact is our national defense strategy as a nation separated by oceans is predicated on being a naval/expeditionary power. We adopt the "steel not flesh" approach. Concessions need to be made to the mission. We didn't all get weight room time during duty hours.

There was an age where a Marine would be exempt but I can't remember any of the real old guys (and we had a few over fifty) not taking the test.

My brother is on SS disability because he had a heart attack at work trimming trees in a bucket truck after a big storm and they won't let him go back to work. 340 I fondly remember one of the guys in my Platoon being worried about the PFT. I called him over and asked what was bothering him since he was in good shape. He told me that it was the three mile run and it always kicked his ass.

I told him not to worry and I'd help him out. The smile on my face should have been a warning.

The run happens and I find myself behind him. He looked like he was dying. I got right behind him and said "That ass looking mighty good boy. You better move faster before I'm up in it."

You guys ever see someone run almost 500 yards in a dead run? I have. Didn't help that I kept up and was telling him how good he looked.

Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) addresses the offense of contempt toward officials. It states that any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Commonwealth, or possession in which they are on duty or present can be punished by a court-martial.

Back to the topic, I suppose it's too early for any females to have had their MOS changed because of Hegseth's new fitness rules.
