Federal regulators have denied autonomous trucking company Aurora Innovation an exemption to safety rules requiring signals to be placed around broken down vehicles.
------------- I'm imagining a new Wild, Wild West with train-robbers replaced by truck-robbers who place barricades in front of driver-less trucks -- forcing them to brake and stop in the middle of the road to avoid hitting them. Upon which thieves POUNCE and SEIZE (they must be conservatives!) and proceed to break into and steal their cargo. Good luck with that ... (and as an Independent Contractor Courier who drives 85,000 miles per year, Imma not gonna be comfortable potentially getting killed by driver-less big rigs -- given that I've had enough close with likely illegal-alien driven big rigs). I went over the one-million mile mark some months ago, so: Time to retire ... like tears in rain. Posted by: ShainS -- Bury My Heart At a Texas MoMe at October 27, 2025 04:12 AM (/hdlF) 9

Posted by: Don in SoCo at October 27, 2025 04:18 AM (vd6bO) ------------ Have bought only ONE new car (all others USED): was working for Ford Aerospace in '89; they had a program where you could go to a Ford Dealer as an employee and buy a new car; NO HAGGLING for 2% BELOW Dealer's Cost. Humorously, I'd gotten a new job and was going to give notice; as soon as I bought an '89 Ford Escort and showed up at work: EVERYBODY said: "So what & where is your new job?" as that was the predictable pattern. Anywho, loved that Ford Escort -- except for some reason, fuel filters frequently became clogged & had to be replaced (and fortunately I'd read the User's Manual as one time accidentally hit a curb and the car lost all power (and fuel); there was an automatic fuel-injection system safety cutoff in case of accidents or collisions. It's life ended when a commercial truck ran into it while parked in a home driveway Circle (was out of town on business) -- but to the truck driver's credit, he left a note and assumed liability for having accidentally totaled it while attempting to maneuver in the tight street Circle. Generative AI trashes all of that.
_-_ There is something about generative AI that makes me mildly nauseous. The whole idea of training a system based on existing code and expecting that it will generate something as good or better eventually just doesn't seem right. I am watching a friend attempt to build a software package for a very specific business domain, and it keeps producing code that does not meet the requirements specified. _-_ I'd have to put that to a spreadsheet for sure, but I have owned the Jeep discussed above since 2000. I read somewhere that the reason there were still very old vehicles being used as cabs is that the maintenance cost eventually levels-off. I was kind of annoyed at all of the "crush your vehicle for charity" thing that has been encouraged of late. Here I is, awake (-ish), sipping my coffee. On TV is a new channel I did not know about, a broadcast channel called "Movies." The on-air guide doesn't show their schedule; I have to go to their site, moviestvnetwork dot com. They're like Turner Classic Movies without the commentary. With commercials, yes, but since they sometimes start the films at odd times -- 4:50, 11:05 -- I suspect they are showing the movies uncut, or mostly so.
Classics: The Lost World from 1960 with Claude Rains is on now; last night we watched 1946's Three Strangers w/ Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. This month is creepy and Halloween-themed material. The stuff seems to range from the '40s to the '70s. Check it out -- go to their site and put in your zip code to see if there's a channel in your area. It's a shame when you lose a beloved car.
_-_ That's the thing about the Jeep. It has carried me through some pretty hairy situations, and it just keeps going. I think it has been the most trouble-free 4wd vehicle I have owned. Posted by: Don in SoCo at October 27, 2025 05:45 AM (vd6bO) 81
Yes; buy high-quality cars and run them for a number of years past the payoff date. Years ago I used to buy a used car, pay it off in the stated four years, then begin right away to look for a newer car to go back into debt for.
Later I realized what I was doing wrong. I kept the '86 Mercedes 420SEL (which was already 15 when I finally paid it off) for another three years, though that was partly because I loved driving it. I kept the '03 Park Avenue for four years past the payoff, the Buick Regal for two, and the current LaCrosse I paid off in '21. Each month I hung on to the money I would have spent on a car note and tucked it into savings. The LaCrosse is in many ways the best of the bunch, and I have no plans to replace it any time soon. The '84 Ford Escort (bought new, but in haste after my '75 Volvo burned up) had warranty, and behaved itself until that expired. Then it failed and stranded me on a hot day, fortunately only a mile from home. It broke down again at 1 am one chilly Sunday morning as I got off the bridge going home -- outside a notorious housing project, no less -- and a nice couple in a Cadillac *pushed it* with their car up to my place. There were other instances. Plus the car was underpowered: With a little 4-cyl. engine, it helped to turn off the A/C to go up a hill.
Finally there came a flat tire, and I said to myself, "Self, this is the end." I had a better job then and could afford better, and did. The silver Olds Cutlass coupe seemed like a Mercedes in comparison. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 27, 2025 05:54 AM (omVj0) 87

Besides, if you select a high-quality vehicle that's right for you, you will enjoy driving it longer than the payment period lasts. I tend to pick young luxury or near-luxury cars with good reputations, buy them either with a whole certified warranty or some of it left, have them checked by my long-time mechanic, change all the fluids as needed, and enjoy my drives. If you still smile when you walk up to your car, there's no need to buy something else.
The LaCrosse, age ten now and with 92K miles, performed like an absolute champ on my 2K mile trip to and from Indiana -- as if it were a thoroughbred who'd been kept too long in a pasture and just wanted a chance to *run* and show what it could do. She was quite into it and all I could think was "whoa", I wouldn't have got past the first page. Posted by: Molly k. at October 27, 2025 07:06 AM (j/yko) 167

_-_- I have advocated that everyone learn to program first in C, (malloc, free) or C++ (new, delete) to learn good memory management. Posted by: Don in SoCo at October 27, 2025 07:18 AM (vd6bO) 183

@SusanVanD Every dollar spent on food stamps creates $1.50 in economic activity. Only the economically illiterate want to cut food stamps. 3:33 PM · Oct 26, 2025 Posted by: m at October 27, 2025 07:01 AM (RuTUS) Put everybody on welfare and universal basic income then. We can spend $10 trillion a year of tax money to create $15 trillion in activity. But considering the economy is now around $30 trillion GDP we might hit a few speed bumps, like a deep recession losing half the economy as it now is, but it'll be worth it just to show how economically literate we are. Keynes. He was, like Marx before him, obviously full of shit. None of his nonsense bears up under even cursory analysis. No matter.
His nonsense is still peddled to college students in every introductory econ course in the West. As soon as you get beyond 100 level econ, your professors will tell you it's all nonsense - but most people never do. You could say that the economy will be improved by dying bears purple. If purple bears increase government power, you will be lauded as a brilliant megabrain for all time thereafter. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 27, 2025 07:24 AM (BI5O2) 189

_-_ new and delete are still part of C++, and I use them daily. Java does the memory management for/to you. Biggest problem with java as I see it is that people tend to load lots of packages with an almost pathological desire to never write code that has already been written elsewhere, causing very bloated and slow software. By itself, java is not so bad. Posted by: Don in SoCo at October 27, 2025 07:33 AM (vd6bO) 199
