That's one very fine balcony railing in the painting.

Sketchline: Mediums: oil, watercolor, ink, canvas.
Location: The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (the USA).

"Expressive characters on the balcony resemble surrealistic marionettes. Despite the statics of the image itself, each of the four figures is emotional in its own way, especially the standing one (obviously, this is a lady), wrapped in fluffy draperies. Two figures at the left side are actively talking. For the characters, the artist chose rather dark colors, so on a neutral gray-pink background, all the intricate details of their clothes and hats are distinct up to their relief. With great care, the master painted the massive balcony railing."

While it's amusing & fun for Hump Day, I'd probably pass hanging this piece. (But, OTOH, it would have a much greater chance than yesterday's birth theme painting.)

As a practical matter, one of the largest demographic groups in the USA at the time were those of German decent. You gonna intern Chester Nimitz? As I alluded to earlier, simple racism cannot be the reason Japanese were interned during the war. The USA didn’t have the time or the physical resources to be that stupid.

Interestingly enough, it is well known now the Nazis made shipping Jews and others to concentration camps on the rails a priority, even though from the war logistics they could not afford to do that. Think about that.

As it was, the FBI kept close tabs on a shitload of people. Foreign nationals were prohibited short wave radios, cameras, and binoculars. Enrico Fermi was prohibited from flying anywhere, as technically speaking, he was an Enemy Alien. Italy.

My grandmother came here in 1938. The thing is she was born in Connecticut and went back to Italy at 1 years old, but was considered american. She never voted in anything over in italy so her US citizenship was intact, and she came back to the US with no problem.
