62 I was as loaded as the 38 stuck in my waistband.

In the dim glow of a flickering desk lamp, she sat perched on the edge of a worn leather chair, her silhouette sharp enough to cut glass. The office was a dive—peeling wallpaper, a battered desk cluttered with cigarette burns and half-empty bourbon bottles, the kind of place where dreams went to sulk. Her name was probably something like Vivian or Faye, but her eyes, hard and glinting like polished obsidian, said she wasn’t here for small talk. Crimson lipstick stained the cigarette she tapped against a chipped ashtray, each puff curling smoke like a ghost of bad decisions. Her black dress clung to her curves, a little too tight, like it was daring someone to notice. One leg crossed over the other, a stiletto heel dangling like a threat, she checked her watch with a scowl that could sour whiskey. Whatever she was waiting for— trouble, or a guy with a gun—it wasn’t coming fast enough, and her patience was thinner than the ice on a February puddle. Outside, the city growled through the rain-streaked window, and in here, the air was thick with secrets and the faint whiff of her perfume, something expensive and dangerous, like her.

I was a paperboy in my teens and there was a huge Lab buck on my route named Jet that loved me. He would often hunt me down carrying a folded up newspaper that I had just delivered somewhere on my route and was so proud of himself.

I just had to go home and wait for the phone call. Of course Jet would follow me around.

I was riding my bike through the neighborhood one and Jet saw me and took off after, ended up trying to jump in my lap as I was pedaling. CRASH! Lots of facelicking followed.

TBH having a cute animal with you is a great way to open a discussion with a woman. And yes there are men that get pets for this specific reason.

Babies work too but for obvious reasons you need to make it clear its not your baby. Oh and that you didn't steal the baby either. "I'm the uncle" is a good answer. "Hey I found this baby, honest" is not.

His trench coat was two sizes too big, his fedora sat crooked like it was drunk, and his tie sported a pattern of dancing pineapples. He clutched a soggy paper bag, the kind that usually holds bad news or cheap takeout, and flashed a grin that was more nervous tic than charm. “Vivian, doll,” he wheezed, tripping over a stray bourbon bottle and nearly face-planting into the ashtray, “I got the goods—your grandma’s secret cookie recipe.

113 The office door creaked on its hinges, a sound like a dying man’s last complaint, but nobody walked through. Not yet. Vivian—or maybe it was Faye—leaned back, her shoulders squared like she was bracing for a storm. The cigarette smoldered between her fingers, forgotten for a moment as her gaze flicked to the frosted glass panel on the door, where shadows danced like ghosts in a cheap noir flick. The name stenciled there, “Sam Carver, Private Investigations,” was half-faded, like the man himself hadn’t shown up in weeks. She didn’t care. She wasn’t here for Carver. She was here for answers, and the weight of that need pressed against her ribs like a loaded .38.

Mumble decades ago, my new wife and I were barhopping in St. Louis and there was a guy at the bar with some furry animal in his arms, not anything that I had ever seen before. but cute with soft fur and liquid eyes. The young girls were digging it. It would nuzzle on their necks and boobs and they would laugh.

After watching for a while my wife said 'It's a puppet, the guy has his arm up inside it'. I watched and damn if she wasn't right.

124 The door refused to open. It said, “Five cents, please.”
He searched his pockets. No more coins; nothing. “I’ll pay you tomorrow,” he told the door. Again he tried the knob. Again it remained locked tight. “What I pay you,” he informed it, “is in the nature of a gratuity; I don’t have to pay you.”
“I think otherwise,” the door said. “Look in the purchase contract you signed when you bought this conapt.”
In his desk drawer he found the contract; since signing it he had found it necessary to refer to the document many times. Sure enough; payment to his door for opening and shutting constituted a mandatory fee. Not a tip.
“You discover I’m right,” the door said. It sounded smug.
From the drawer beside the sink Joe Chip got a stainless steel knife; with it he began systematically to unscrew the bolt assembly of his apt’s money-gulping door.
“I’ll sue you,” the door said as the first screw fell out.
Joe Chip said, “I’ve never been sued by a door. But I guess I can live through it.”

You can do most of it online - social security.gov. Fill out the form and if you aren't planning to apply for disability, for the love of all that is holy, leave that stuff blank. It is cumbersome but necessary, in order to weed out fraud, but if you make a mistake and answer some of the questions, it will delay the start of your SS payments. Normally it takes a couple of months to start, so you can file the paperwork a month or two before your eligibility date. If you need help, call your state SS office. Ours was really responsive, so I hope yours is as well. Good luck!

203 Rain hammered the window, a relentless drumbeat that matched the pulse in her temples. She fished a silver compact from her purse, snapped it open, and checked her reflection—not out of vanity, but like a soldier checking their ammo. Her face was a mask of cool defiance, but the faint lines around her eyes told a story of nights spent staring at ceilings, chasing ghosts of her own. She snapped the compact shut, the sound sharp enough to slice through the room’s stale air, and tossed it back into her purse next to a folded letter, edges worn from too many readings. Whatever was in that letter, it was the kind of trouble that didn’t knock politely.

Yes there were certainly movies with gay characters, but if you went to watch the Birdcage or something like that you knew what you were signing up for.

The good news is they start the clock on accruing your payments when you specify, and you be paid a lump sum when you get approved.

Example: You submit your request in January, with a requested payment start date of January. You get approved in March. They send you the January and February payments as soon as you get approved in March.

Looking back, I should have submitted a couple of months before I wanted the payments to start.

"Tedeschi Trucks Band - Angel From Montgomery/Sugaree"

Love me some Tedeschi Trucks. Somebody, maybe you Jack, posted another video of them -- I think a different song, some years ago.

I would never have heard of them if we didn't have a Pirate Radio station (in Jerome, AZ) called "Gulch Radio" that went legit and licensed some years ago. They play great old & contemporary stuff that rarely got radio airplay (e.g. how I first discovered both of these artists as well as Widespread Panic).

I still occasionally re-watch that great tribute to the BeeGees and Barry Gibb (live and in person) at the 2017 Grammys you posted here by Keith Urban covering "To Love Somebody."

Thanks for both -- and all your commentary!

255 I gave a doggie treat to a Great Dane this afternoon, he's one of my "customers". I bicycle the same 12 mile route 4-5 times a week, been doing it for nearly 20 years. I carry dog treats and cat treats. At one house, I started giving a treat to a female chocolate lab about 15 years ago. She would leap in the air, all four legs off the ground when she saw me, even when she was old. She passed away last year and the owner got a Great Dane, and just recently a Jack Russell puppy, who didn't know what to do at first. Fast learner, though. They are in a fenced back yard and I feed them through the chain link. They are out about 50% of the time I ride by. The owner is cool with it.

MiladyJo and I are just a few episodes into a re-watch of Eureka. As I said the other night, it's amazing how little I remember when it was only a decade ago. I don't recall a descent into wokism, in that or Warehouse 13. My wokedar may not have been as finely honed back then.

I really enjoyed Avatar, the Last Airbender original series. The subsequent series, whatever it was called, was forgettable and ultimately disappointing in the final relationship development.

261 What is this, lesbian night? A lotta talk about them. My mother had to explain this deal to me when I was in the dorm, because my roommate thought they were witches. Because the dorm monitors, all PE majors, would meet in a room in their underwear and light a candle. We knew because we spied on them under the door vent before going to the other wing of the dorm to play cards. I know this may not make sense, but we were supposed to be in our rooms at 1030 in basically a convent.

A lesbian asked me out once at a party and I almost went with her to a concert. Which would have ended u a big surprise for me. My bf now husband (I think we were broken up at the time, but he was always lurking around) overheard her ask me if I was straight. I told her no, because I was pretty wasted at the time, and yes, I'd go.

He then told her I was with him and was straight and I argued with him about both issues. I never saw her again but she was not butch. The lipstick lesbian type.

As I have said, my guardian angels, and there were more than one in shifts, were exhausted by the time we married.

Elementary is actually one of my favorite series, and I think it did the race/gender swaps very well. Watson did end up solving some crimes, but it was in the context of her being Sherlock's apprentice, so it made sense.

Owing to recommendations from some fans here, we reluctantly have been watching the "Elementary" series with both Watson and Moriarty portrayed as women (a little off putting) and an occasion tranny character.

However, the stores are pretty well-written and the acting quite good. What's amazing to us is that many of the themes (especially tech-related), though about a decade old, are still quite relevant and in the news today (it seems like a contemporary series, not an "old" one).

Additionally, post-Charlie Hebdo, I bought a wonderful black-and-white drawing of Ayn Rand (one of my philosophical intellectual mentors) created by Bosch Fawstin -- an American cartoonist and anti-Islamist activist who is known for drawing the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Born a Muslim, his parents came from Albania. Fawstin left the religion and now describes himself as a "radical critic of Islam" He won a controversial Muhammad cartoon contest in 2015 that saw the Curtis Culwell Center attack take place (by a known Deep State FBI Patsy who was allowed to do so).

Naturally, he's had fatwas and death threats since a la Salman Rushdie and has had to live in hiding.

I was unhappy I didn't know who wrote the cinema music and was most annoyed when someone argued with me that it was Daft Punk.

A few years later Joe Trapenese wrote the music to the animated video "sequel" and it was clear he wrote the first one as well.

Funny story. A dude I went to high school with was driving, and I wasn't. He was older, but he passed my house on the way to high school, so he would pick me up, and 2 of my friends and we drove to school, got stoned out of our minds sitting in the parking lot before school and listened to the radio. we did that all year It was the 1968 GTO. A year later he wanted to sell it just as I was getting my license. $350. It got totaled 6 months later when an asshole in a van ran a stop sign while arguing with his fucking rotund ugly ass girlfriend. I was pissed. I got a roadrunner after that so it wasn't all bad. It was a great car though.

There's some prep, sllcing 2 garlic cloves, small chop a shallot, grate ginger, peel and slice 3 bunches of carrots plus 2 bulk carrots and chop about a cup of cashews, though the actual cooking time is pretty simple: Cook until the carrots are mush. Then puree with a stick blender, adding white pepper, Better Than Bouillon Chicken and butter to taste.

Just watching the rerun of Jesse Watters tonight, who had Michael Shellenberger on who made an interesting point about the Ballroom.

The last major renovations of the WH were right after WWII, and this represents the end of that era. The major renovation signals a new era, the end of the post WWII order. And that, subconsciously, is what is freaking out the establishment.

Demolishing the East Wing and putting up something new and grander represents the end of the Old Order.

This is interesting. 18 yr old Ricardo was going to school in LA, staying with his brother, splitting time between there and working in his father's store down in Mexico.

He became enamored with Georgiana seeing her on screen a 1939. She was just 15 at the time. Later, in 1944 after he started acting himself, they were set up on a blind date. He proposed to her right then and there. It took him a week to convince her, and they were married.

And it lasted until 2007 when she died. That's quite a story.

413 So she would've been about 19 or 20 when they married.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley

I stand corrected.

But reminds me of a case maybe 25 years ago when some private elite teacher man went off to marry a 14 year old girl student. I think the loophole was that you could get married in Georgia at 14 if the girl was pregnant. She claimed that, then claimed a miscarriage.

Don't remember the outcome.

But there are some creepy people teaching children.

My paternal grandmother married my grandfather when she was 16. He was 19 or 20, IIRC.

Later, she worried about her granddaughter getting married when she was 25. Way too young, my grandmother fretted. But her fret was right, as, let's just say, he wasn't the very best.

Got two stores, same retailer, equidistant from. So 50-50 which one I go to.
One never cards obvious grandfatherly me, the other always does...

The one that cards I loudly proclaim
"I get it. It's OK. Not you personally, but the store got caught knowingly selling to minors and will lose its license if it ever happens again so you have to card EVERYONE."

Big store so nobody has had to hear it twice.

441 I lol-ed at that Tron meme way uo top there.

I was 13 when the original Tron came out. I really wanted to like it. Went to the theater 3 separate times to see it. Fell asleep all 3 times. Cindy Morgan in tights was the only thing it had going for it. And there were a couple of decent Tron arcade games.

I haven't bothered with the sequels.

447 Well

I used to cheat on NBA games when I was in Europe. On occasion, when opportunity arose.

Simple.

You can bet on NBA games on a simple point spread through the government lotteries. The tickets are printed and distributed days in advance of the game.

So-pay attention to sports media, and if a serious player is injured after the tickets are printed (3-4) days, your odds increase quite a bit.

Hmm

I seem to recall Hussein Jr.'s Uncle Onyango, illegally in America for years despite deportation order, living in public housing.

Worked in a liquor store (not the most observant of moslems) busted for DUI (or DWI, depending on local lingo) after drunkenly crashing into a police car.

45 day suspension of license. That's it. Lived at taxpayer expense until the ends of his illegally present days.
