The Week In Weirdness

Indian Man Fakes Death to See Who Would Attend His Funeral

doof-Mohan-Lal.jpg

A 74-year-old man who wanted to check who would grieve his passing faked his death and staged a mock funeral to see who would attend.

The people of Konchi, a village in India’s Bihar state, were shocked to learn about the sudden passing of Mohan Lal, a local 74-year-old former Air Force veteran. It was confusing to see a procession when most people didn’t even know he had died, but that didn’t stop people from joining the procession, mourning the poor man, and taking part in all the traditional rites. But what really stunned people was the moment when Mohan got up from his casket. They soon learned that the funeral was nothing but a twisted test thought up by the 74-year-old man to see how many people cared about him.

***

To make locals forgive him for the mock funeral, Mohan Lal organized a big feast for everyone.

I don't think I want to know who would show up for my funeral. Although I do think it would be kinda cool to see if my buddy Sponge showed up and yelled "FIRST!!!"

Unemployed Man Exploits Food Delivery Platform to Eat 1,000 Free Meals Over Two Years

A 38-year-old Japanese man was arrested on suspicion of fraud after exploiting a food delivery app’s loophole to unlawfully receive over 1,000 deliveries without paying for them.

For more than two years, Takuya Higashimoto, an unemployed man from Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, took advantage of the order cancellation policy of a major Japanese food delivery platform to eat over 1,000 free meals. To do this without being detected was no easy feat. Investigators found that the fraudster used 124 accounts on the Demae-can delivery app, many of them registered under false names and fake addresses. Higashimoto typically used prepaid cards to register an account and cancelled his membership a few days later. This made it very hard for the platform to detect and stop his operation, which resulted in losses exceeding 3.7 million yen ($24,000).

***

“At first, I just tried this trick. I couldn’t stop after reaping the rewards of my fraud,” Higashimoto told police after his capture, earlier this month.

That's a Moron-worthy effort!

Husband Forced to Compensate Ex-Wife for Saving Her Number as ‘Chubby’ in His Phone

Spouses often come up with nicknames for each other, some more endearing than others, but rarely do these end up as a reason for a divorce. Exceptions do occur, though, as was the case with a Turkish couple who broke up over how the husband had his wife’s name saved in his phone. The Court of Cassation ruled that the woman should be compensated for being saved as ‘Tombek’, which is apparently Turkish for ‘Chubby’. The nickname came to light during court proceedings as the couple went through a divorce, and the woman claimed that the derogatory nickname was degrading and damaging to their marital relationship.

I have several Hordelings listed by their AOSHQ nic in my phone. None are too terribly inappropriate. Thankfully, I don't personally know Bea Arthur's Dick or Masturbatin' Pete.

What is the weirdest nic you have in your phone (AOSHQ person or otherwise)?

Speaking of Weird

Happy Birthday to Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic! Weird Al was born in this date in 1959.

doof-weirdal2.jpg

How much do you know about the accordion legend?

21 Fun Facts About "Weird Al" Yankovic

This subject is particularly interesting to me

5. He doesn't legally have to seek out permission to parody an artist's song, but he asks for it anyway.
Under the "fair use" provision of U.S. copyright law, Yankovic and other parodists don't need permission from original artists to satirize their work, as long as royalties are paid. But to stay on friendly terms with other artists in the industry, Al asks for permission before recording anyway.

6. Some musicians and record labels have denied “Weird Al” Yankovic permission to parody their songs.
Yankovic has said that only "about two to three percent" of the time does he get a "no" from an artist or record label, but there have been notable rejections. Even though Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is a fan, he indicated he would not approve of a polka medley of Zeppelin tunes. Still, a sample of "Black Dog" was allowed in a "Trapped in the Closet" parody. Paul McCartney didn't give permission for Wings' "Live and Let Die" to be parodied because the altered version would have been "Chicken Pot Pie," which would have gone against McCartney's vegetarianism.

Feel Good Story

Crushed by a Car, a Stranger Comforted Him Until Help Arrived – Now They’re Getting Married

doof-married-goodsam.jpg

A couple who met after one of them was run over and crushed by a car have tied the knot and celebrated with wedding photos at the crash scene.

The story begins five years ago when Kirsty Southern rushed to help after spotting Ryan McLeod trapped underneath a vehicle.

She had just left a swimming class when she saw a car’s wheel flatten a man’s leg, and the helpless victim banging wildly on the driver-side door trying to get the motorist to move.

Rushing over without a clue what to do, she ended up comforting him for some 40 minutes while emergency services arrived through the gridlocked traffic.

***

“I had a little Facebook look as I knew his name afterwards. I didn’t message him, just a look,” said Southern. They began chatting on social media and began dating soon after that, while COVID regulations would have had them socially distanced.

The pair moved into together and had a blissful 4 years before McLeod went down on bended knee over a special weekend getaway, but given his injury, his bride-to-be worried he’d hurt himself.

“It is a lovely story, and we still don’t quite believe it,” Southern admitted. “Married life is like living in a cosy love story. We’re in a beautiful bubble together, and it’s absolute bliss.”

Some guys will do anything to get a woman's attention!

9 When Obama renovated the WH there wasn't even any Republican outrage. Nobody cared. And this is when people were dogging Obama for some of the dumbest shit, often raised by the Obama campaign itself to make the Right look bad.
I didn't even know there was a renovation under Obama.

The city has water trucks that go up and down the streets spraying lemon scented water to get rid of the smell of booze, vomit, and garbage. They clean the streets before the next days business.I have seen fights, drug pushers, and police being called. And rats the size of cats running across the roads. Bums sleeping in doorways until morning. If you want real reality TV this is it.

He was generally disliked, but somehow, even when scammed, ended up making huge profits. There was an old joke about selling coal to Manchester (England, a major coal producer). He was told by upper crust that he could make money that way, so he loaded up a ship with coal and headed there. It just so happened that when the ship arrived, a strike had caused a shortage of coal, and he made boo koo bucks.

These soft, easily triggered baby adults I work with now have forced my hand.

And I really don't want to start again somewhere else pretty much these are the people you have to work with every where now.

You raise your voice and off to HR they go and then you have to deal with an emotionalles robot hr drone who has zero clue of the industry you work in nor the demands of the job.

169 For an alternate view of the new embargo on Russian oil:

Lord Bebo
@MyLordBebo

🇷🇺🇬🇧 SANCTIONS ON RUSSIAN OIL EXPLAINED!

But what do US-EU-UK sanctions on Russian oil actually do?

I’ll explain:

1) Sanctioned products cannot be transported by ships anymore with western insurance and by western shipping companies.

2) Eastern shipping companies take over, like the fleet of Chinese ships that now transport Russian oil.

3) These ships now use another insurance, from China or from Russia. (Which was not existent before, or were not widely used)

4) Now the same amount of oil is transported, but without being insured in England and by BRICS ships. That is what they called “shadow fleet”.

-> England lost its shipping insurance monopoly, which is very bad for the UK.

Starmer celebrates essentially the handover of a British traditional market to BRICS.

236 What I *really hate* about my shitty "health insurance" policy is: everything out of state is also Out-Of-Network. And the nearest in-state hospital is so very shitty. Another hospital, across state line, is FAR SUPERIOR in every way. But $$$$$$ if I go there.

Pray every day, that I don't need hospitalization until I can get on Medicare. If it's still around by then.

Haven't heard one way or the other, though, on the Ricochet podcast or Duane Patterson's podcast (https://duaneworld.com). Ever since then, I've been on a healthcare bill sharing plan, which is much cheaper because we all just pay each other's bills and very little, if any, of this money ends up in the pockets of connected people. I haven't needed to make a claim, but a family member has and reported that it worked very well.

316 Read the romance story of the wedding about the guy being run over by a car. The driver, not mentioned, backed up & ran over his ankle again.

My husband accused me of three "accidents" I had in different cars & did not confess til he saw the damage. His first car was a rusted out beat up car & who would notice? My brother, who was visiting, & I got some burgers & the take out window drive had a sharp turn. I turned but scraped along a wooden fence a few feet. This resulted in me having to stop so we could laugh. Big deal.

The second time I was worried about our baby son's high fever & quickly ran into Walgreen's for poison Tylenol. Was looking at his feverish face in the rear view mirror & ran over the low bollard in front of the car. I am positive I told him about this.

The 3rd time I was backing out of our garage with our sick dog & the boss of me was out of town. I sneezed violently (due to the dog) & hit the gas & the rising garage door with a jolt. I checked & the garage door could close & went on to the vet. Decided not to tell him out of state and wait. I really did forget. He saw the door one morning and asked wth? How could I forget he wondered? Well, I did.

317 Solanine poisoning is primarily displayed by gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, burning of the throat, cardiac dysrhythmia, nightmares, headache, dizziness, itching, eczema, thyroid problems, and inflammation and pain in the joints.

In more severe cases, hallucinations, loss of sensation, paralysis, fever, jaundice, dilated pupils, hypothermia, and death have been reported.[2][3][4]

Ingestion of solanine in moderate amounts can cause death.
One study suggests that doses of 2 to 5 mg/kg of body weight can cause toxic symptoms, and doses of 3 to 6 mg/kg of body weight can be fatal.[5]

I can't even remember why he brought it up the other night. I told him about all three "incidents," but not always when they happened. I was not trying to get away with it. He never got mad but does wonder about me, especially the stupid garage door. He unbent it somehow on his own. I think it barely scratched the bumper of my car. It was not that important to me.

It was pre-cell phone photos and I didn't want to worry him on a business trip. Then I just forgot and he noticed the dent in the garage door about 2wks later.

Otherwise I have a splendid driving record since marriage and only one speeding ticket. He and our sons were napping on the long trip from my parent's farm to FL. I always took the straight I-10 drive from Mobile to Jacksonville. I was going to "surprise" him by "making good time" (my father's motto). He was surprised when the Hwy Patrol pulled me over going 83mph.

I drifted away little by little because of the music thing. I just didn't want to involve her in that world. In some ways its a decision that has haunted me ever since. She started dating another guy, and they got hit on his motorcycle. They were on the ground, but ok. The driver went to leave the scene and ran her over. I blamed myself for years after that. Had I kept her in my world even just a while longer that would have never happened. I think the only silver lining was meeting Mrs B, which ultimately led me to a way better place, because she knew when to pull my leash when I got out of hand.

I've heard tales of "pole salat". Pokeweed -- I hate those damned things.

You've got to boil it long enough, and pick only the more tender leaves to neutralize the toxic compounds.

Surprisingly, there a few common vegetables that are toxic in the raw state, and heating is what breaks those down into non-toxic components. Lima/butter beans are an example. Raw, they have some toxic compounds, and if you ate enough of them raw, it would make you sick. Cooking them kills that.

372 "Tomatoes have historically been regarded as toxic due to their relation to the nightshade family, but it is the unripe, green parts of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and green tomatoes, that are toxic. These parts contain toxic compounds like solanine and tomatine, which are bitter and can cause poisoning symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting. The ripe, red fruit is not poisonous, as the levels of these toxins decrease significantly as the fruit ripens"

I'll add that it wasn't until the 1800's that tomatoes became accepted as a food source.

An aside re Rogers.
You know, it's rather strange...I first heard 'Mary Ellen Carter' at a pub in Atlanta in the mid 80's, a Canadian group was playing there. I was so impressed with the tune that I talked to the group leader during a break. I admit that the lyric that caught my attention was "...With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go..."

Fast forward 35 years or so, without hearing any Rogers, or knowing who he was, then, AoP mentions 'Mary Ellen Carter' here, I check it, and there 'tis. It's become something of a staple.

As far as 'Barrett's Privateers', I like this vid, bunch of guys sitting around a table with a couple of bottles.

But the fact that they are hand-made by grafting means they will be expensive. If you could breed or gene-splice a hybrid, it could be propagated from the tubers like potatoes, and could be grown inexpensively. And maybe be frost-tolerant for those of us in northern climes.

390 Yeah, I'm not sure about that whole vegetarian thing. If they can't grow meat flavor tomatoes and lettuce that tastes like french fries I'm out.

391 But the fact that they are hand-made by grafting means they will be expensive. If you could breed or gene-splice a hybrid, it could be propagated from the tubers like potatoes, and could be grown inexpensively. And maybe be frost-tolerant for those of us in northern climes.

Salad is never the main course, of course. I am an omnivore.

Periodically, searchers turn up some artifact from the Franklin expedition. It is fascinating, but capsulizes the risks of the age of exploration.

"Westward from the Davis Strait
'Tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient
For which so many died
Seeking gold and glory,
Leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones"

399 I patched my roof here in AJ this afternoon. About half the roofing nails did not find purchase in the plywood decking, which is badly delaminated in the affected area. It will have to do for now. I think I have stopped, or at least greatly reduced the leak. When I am down for the Winter, I expect I will replace maybe 4 by 20 feet of decking: from the ridge down to the eave, and from the gable overhang in to the first rafter beyond the North wall. I will go up into the attic tomorrow, and try to get a handle on how far the deck damage extends in from the gable end.

Yup. Arrived here on sunday the 12th, in the wee hours, and in the midst of the torrential rains, which disclosed to me how bad the roof is. Left here for Corsicana on Wednesday, spent the weekend at the MoMee, and departed Corsicana Sunday morning the 19th. Arrived back here on Monday. Was planning to leave tomorrow, but things got in the way, so will leave Saturday AM. Tomorrow I will house-clean, and hoe some weeds outside.

404 DH is driving me into Anchorage tomorrow to pick up my brand new 1961 Ford Falcon sedan at the port. It has arrived at last! Then I get to drive it home, and then find out what it needs to have done. I hope the brakes work. Wish me luck!

I learned to drive in a Falcon station wagon, three on a tree. This one is a sedan and automatic, so less work but just as chromed up and curvy. Wing windows FTW.

The Falcon was Ford's entry into the then-new "compact car" category. The original Falcons sported a pavement-ripping 144 cubic inch inline six, soon upped to 170, and later to 200.

Competitors were Chevy II, Plymouth Valiant/Dodge Dart, Studebaker Lark, and Rambler American.

The Mustang started out on the Falcon platform.

Largely because less Federal regulations. No bumper height laws, no crumple zones, no CAFE rules that forced all cars to look like a used bar of soap.

It took me all of 10 seconds to update his record in my address book and now he is "Shazam!" until the day he dies.
