8 Well, I guess this is a partial answer:

“The financial impact of this outage will easily reach into the hundreds of billions due to loss in productivity for millions of workers that cannot do their job, plus business operations that are stopped or delayed—from airlines to factories.”

Yeah. Those "millions of workers" are the only ones who lost money. No doubt got sent home without pay for the duration.

Employers lose a pittance over one day, probably make it up in the following days. Employees? Screwed. Short paychecks.

Amazon makes almost no money from its storefront; all the money is in selling is cloud services to other customers.

And those customers lose money when the cloud falls over. Some of them, lots of money.

16 A lot of productivity software is now in the 'cloud'. If the 'cloud' goes down, that software can't be used and nobody is working. It's what happens when you get away from storing your stuff 'in house'. You risk this. The Feds, some anyway, use Amazon Cloud services. Services they used to do themselves (I work at DoD). I prefer in house. The reason for use of Amazon, is of course, money. It 'saves' money. Yes, I put 'saves' in scare quote because obviously the FedGov saves nothing.

Which is for the best. Those people are complete bullshit artists. I have about as much faith in alchemy.

I don't trust that any serious analysis has gone into calculating losses here. Journalists, who could not calculate such a figure if they tried, are uncritically parroting a figure quoted them by an "expert." Hoe impressed are you with the experts these days?

24 A lot of productivity software is now in the 'cloud'. If the 'cloud' goes down, that software can't be used and nobody is working.

To me, this is like asserting that billions are lost every time there's a snow day. Salaried employees who are doing serious work with deadlines typically have to make up for lost time (whatever the cause) with additional work once the obstacle is resolved. If the system is down Wednesday for whatever reason, my Saturday is going to end up looking a lot like Wednesday otherwise would have looked, assuming I cannot somehow cram Wednesday's workload into Thursday and Friday. I think the idea that these stoppages (unless prolonged for a significant period of time) represent losses that can't be mitigated in whole or part is very dubious.

I don't know. I'm the tech side of the equation and a fed contractor. The federal leviathan is a bubble that doesn't look like anything outside itself. As a user, I know some of my services have gone down and then we use old fashion paper for logs, tickets, etc. The show goes on, slowly. 😉

Vote as if your daughter's rights depend on it.

I wasn't sure what they were talking about : Right to have boys in your daughter's locker room? Right to become Jack and not Jill? Then I saw tiny lettering in the bottom of the sign "Kamala 2024"

It was not fun.
Tired when I got to work and even more tired when I returned home.

Thankfully, my commute now is from the shower to the computer desk. Two days a week I’ll have to drive over and check in to update progress.

That’s only a 15 minute trek, though.

Three days a week makes it better, at least.

Sounds nice though.
You’ll have a nice retirement once the grind ends.

I’d like to live out in the middle of nowhere some day. The only drawback is having to drive to get to civilization when needed,

I see that occasionally. Folks come into town from the country and buy a months's worth of stuff. You need an extra fridge/freezer or two, and a generator for when the electricity fails.

I don't remember the exact names, but two brothers were named something like "Goodboy and Shithead." Goodboy became a criminal and Shithead became a police officer.

55 Wow, that optical switch took me back.

I did a lot of board-level fiber routing and mech packaging during the optical telecom boom.

Man that stuff is dense. Keeping all those fiber ends clean is damn near impossible and they look like they are single mode with a very small core.

Plus they look like E2000 connectors that use a metal ferrule that is very difficult to inspect.

I reckon it will be a box that no one will be allowed to touch once it's up and running and rightly so.

Gonna share this with some of my old homies from back in the day.

73 This past week a deposit of $261 showed up in my bank account from SS. When I went to the SS website (after yesterday's all-morning struggle with their new sign-on system), I see no explanation, only that it's a one-time payment. I suppose it's an adjustment of some kind, but I wish I could find out why.

Don't worry, I'm not gonna give it back! That, and the sale of two vintage fedoras I made on eBay, will pay for my new printer and the gas I bought on my Indiana trip.

74 I'm having to use CorelDRAW for the first time in many years with the new job.

I'd forgotten how much I like it.
It's much more intuitive than Adobe Illustrator, for me anyhow.

And as a plus, you can still buy CorelDRAW and PhotoPaint as a package for a lifetime license. They offer a monthly-priced "Suite" like Creative Cloud, but I'm all for a one-time purchase over subscriptions.

For anybody who doesn't want to pay the Adobe tax, Corel is still a decent option, IMHO.

82 Good morning everyone.

Would appreciate a prayer for Smash and MegaRoy. I'm on travel this week and MegaRoy has become lethargic and won't eat or drink. Sat hunched up in one spot all night and wouldn't let her pick him up. He went to the vet yesterday for a swollen jaw, (no bite or obvious infected tooth) and was given a healthy status.

Maybe that was it?

I had that at the beginning of the year, though. They don't say it's a continuing increase, but a one-time thing.

I was looking into Florida, in one of my current national banks' branches. What I found was reviews in practically every relevant branch that expressed nothing but disdain for the lack of service and the lack of professional behavior. It's like Florida big banks are telling people its no different at the big bank across the street, so what do you care?

Looking into Houston TX and Wilmington DE later on today. Still open for suggestions.

Must have:

- Personal and business checking, free with minimal balance.
- Domestic and international wire transfer service.
- Personal and business credit cards.
- No annual fee.

91 I have noticed that SS is very proactive in applying adjustments; I don't have to ask them about such things. They just do it. And the few times I've spoken to them on the phone -- after the usual one-hour wait! -- they've been knowledgeable and helpful.

Medicare answers the phone much more quickly, and are actually pretty pleasant too.

He also says:

"You know your heart goes out to their families. Your heart also goes out to the fact that who ever did this crime, their family is going to lose them as well because they will end up getting caught so everybody loses across the board".

This is why that city is so f'd up. Lefty idiots.

This could be the official motto of Da Swamp.

There was a shooting yesterday on a street here called North Rocheblave. My reaction was, "Well, there's your problem right there, North Rocheblave." I don't think there is any part of Rocheblave these days that's safe to be in during daylight or dark.

Charlotte, NC and Dallas are becoming financial hubs currently.
One or the other or both may replace NYC & San Fran as the big financial capitals if those cities keep up their socialist antics.

You might want to look into some local banks in those cities, too.

Good morning, rickb -- a pleasure to get to meet & chat with you this past Saturday!

I had meant to tell you, and can't remember now if I did, about an interaction and joke I believe you made -- which I've since repeated at least 100 times to others:

Some years ago here I asked "Am I the only one with OCD who MUST have his close tags in his nic in alphabetical order?"

To which you replied: "You're not OCD if you haven't spelled it CDO."

Never not funny!

The new toll bridge is not the only way to reach the town on the other side of the canal. There's a completely free and well-paved state (?) road that you can take to get to the town from a different direction -- actually it's closer to where I live.

There's not much reason to go there unless you live there, but the state road is a nice drive.
