Mount Washington is a cute little peak in comparison to the real mountains of the American West. But because of its peculiar location right smack in the middle of some very common storm tracks, it makes the weather on the mountain very, very strange. The surrounding lower mountains funnel those systems right into Mount Washington, so things like 100mph wind, and snow in August can happen. The earliest snowfall on record is on July 1st. And the latest snowfall on record is on June 30th.

See the pattern?

Couple that with the profoundly stupid population of the Northeast, and we get things like this! In their defense, it is entirely possible to enjoy a glorious warm fall day at the base of the mountain, while it is sleeting and blowing 50mph halfway up!

Of course, this has been known about Mount Washington since it was first climbed in 1642, so maybe it's just Darwin at work! Anybody who climbs any of these peaks without proper preparation is simply stupid. I climbed Mount Lafayette, about 30 miles away and 1,000 feet shorter, a long time ago, and a partly cloudy day at the base gave way to sleet, fog, 40mph winds, and lots of ice on the trail. On the other hand, steak and beer at The Outing Club lodge that night, so it all worked out!

******

Go to your rooms...all of you. To say that I am bitterly disappointed in every one of you is an understatement. Not a single one of you made the connection between the top picture and the song behind it in the ONT from two weeks ago.

Do better.

Be better.

******

Those stupid, virtue-signaling lawn signs that proclaim how absolutely wonderful the occupants are make me want to drive over their lawns and do 360s. There is so much hypocrisy built into them that I guess the appropriate response is to laugh and point, but I still bristle when I see them.

But... how about this one?

51 Hiking to the top of Mt Washington was a bit eerie. Once you get above tree line you might as well be on another planet. Visibility goes out the window once you get into the clouds. There are trail markers which were just piles of rocks, and 1 time it was so bad you couldn't see 15 feet in front of you. You really...really had to make sure you found the next trail marker. They were close together, but it was still hairy. There is a lodge type thing just a little ways before the summit, and we almost walked into it the visibility was so bad.

did 60-70 miles on Appalachian trail. Why? because again, our scoutmaster was an asshole. I will say something about that trail. I could be wrong, but it might be a secret meetup for the gays. I was on a 4 day trip in september on the harleys with about 9 other bikes. We were in stokes state forest at a bar on a lake. A pretty young kid, very late teens/early 20s with a back pack asks me if if I had a cigarette. We start talking, he says he's doing the whole trail, started in the spring, looking to finish by november. He's with 4 other dudes. They seems to be a little...comfortable with each other. Hugging each other, etc. they come over to my table, and I ask, sooo you 4 been doing this together? The one kid says No, we just met today, he's leaving the trail tomorrow, the other 2 are going another way". Well now, they seemed awfully friendly with each other for just meeting, and looking at them my Gaydar was going off the frigging chart.

73 Used to live up there for a few years. When I wasn't wrestling bears, or knocking moose over with an airhorn I actually did climb Mt. Washington. I took the Tuckerman Ravine route. Tuckerman Ravine is not a place you want to go after September or before June. It's affectionately known as the Dumping Ground. The reason is that the high winds displace the snow from the top of Mt. Washington and it has to go somewhere. It usually ends up in Tuckerman Ravine....which holds the record of 49 inches of snow in ....(drum roll) ONE FREAKIN HOUR. In 1968-1969....Tuckerman Ravine acquired over 566 inches of snow. That's over 47 feet of snow.

Now about that climb. It wasn't easy. But, also, not impossible. I felt like I really accomplished something until I saw all the tourists (old people and kids) at the top of Mt. Washington. They took the cog railroad which runs up there in good weather. Sort of took the wind out of my accomplishment. I didn't walk down.

Heh! That's similar to the highest point in Nebraska, Panorama Point. Its on some guys cattle ranch and for a minimal fee, you can drive to the marker and gaze upon the mighty peaks that surround you. Well, rolling grasslands. You can probably see the Rockies on a clear day. Never been there but I would love to visit, because I'm weird.

I've hiked, well drove, up the highest peak in Pennsylvania. Mt. Davis. I drove up to the parking lot and walked up a tower the PA Park service built so you are above all the tree's. It is a beautiful view of the region.

The other thing that kind of turned me off to ever hiking the Appalachian Trail for any length were the serial killers who preyed on hikers. Not talked about a lot but happens up and down the trail. Particularly the more accessable by car terrain. Park nearby (which I've done at an isolated spot) and get on the trail. Find a victim and skedaddle. Some local roads come real close to The Trail. A very good word from Wales. A time of innocense, of discovering myself in the mountains of the West, that first powerful, entralling moment of meeting. No drug like mutual attraction that hits you with force.

No regrets. I've been blessed abundantly with love and family and lived to see my grandchildren with the man I was meant to be with. Who arrived without warning a year later, thanks be to God.

Dedicated to young love that formed on a spring day of cherry trees blooming...and ended on a fall day four months later. Well, his life did, my love never ended.

132 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The big news is the Russians have more or less surrounded the Ukrainians in the city of Pokrovsk. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, are trapped as the Russians now control all the roads. Fleeing cross-country on foot is also suicidal, as night-vision drones pick off the troops one by one.
2. The Ukrainians are trying to break out, and relief forces are trying to break in, with limited success so far.
3. In a bizarre incident, the Ukrainians used two Blackhawk helicopters to drop off a dozen troops at the edge of the battle area. The troops, assumed to be some high speed, low drag special forces operators on an extraction mission of a high value asset, made it about a mile before they were all picked off by drones.

Have read a few Bill Bryson books in the past that I liked...need to read again this winter.

I met Redford in my glorious prime (he's older). I still count his facial moles to see if he had any removed...and that's how I knew it was him. He did not, by the way. He ageds so badly before his death they were hard to find in the roadmap of his wrinkles.

He was at least 3 or 4" shorter than me. I acted like I did not know who he was, but I did. I could have jumped him to see what would have happened!!! A few years after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But I did not speak to him or act like a ninny, he probably thought I would, though, after we made eye contact in close quarters. I let him go on to more fame without being in the news.

It's not an original thought by me, but drones are having the same impact on warfare that the introduction of the machine gun had at the end of the 19th century. Everything that we thought we knew about how to run a battlefield is now as obsolete as horse cavalry and standing in ranks for musket volley fire.

179 My first ski lift ride was on a Poma lift in 1977 that was installed in the 50's. You grab a bar with a small seat on it and ride to the top on your skis. Sky Tavern on the Reno side of Tahoe.
Only class' 4 and higher were allowed on the new modern 2 seat chair lift manufactured by Lift Industries of Carson City NV. I did 3/4 of the rope splice on the lift that replaced it in 1999.

That chair lift scared the hell out of me as a 7yo and as I later learned, for good reason.
I've worked on some pretty old ski lifts in my brief career in the industry and Lift Engineering were the worst. Bull wheels had to be tested NDT every year. Shit rusted. Crappy back up drives. The list goes on. They were the first to incorporate MIG welders and suddenly every tweeker in town was an awesome welder willing to work for shit wages. Which Lift loved almost as much as the polish slave labor force that worked and lived there.
Doppelmyer and Poma rock.
Oldest I worked on was Ridge, a 1966 SLI lift out of New York. Beloved by the locals, maintnence heavy but solid. Still in operation today.
I love skiing. Wish I was in good enough shape to do it still.

The Vibe may have to do with it's probably the oldest settled areas, long before we 'invaded'. Lots of History in New England, stretching to the Adirondacks.

My funniest story was I was on business just north of Boston, in Danvers, early October. I was driving around at night after work looking for a nice local joint for a seafood dinner and realized I was driving through 'The Salem'. Made a point to drive by the Memorial. Didn't stop, I was hungry, but I made a point to drive by the location. Drive-by respects, so to speak.

187 "Mount Washington is a cute little peak in comparison to the real mountains of the American West." TRUE! Out here the reds in the mountains fade fast in September, but the golds and even some orange aspen are glorious.

I currently live on a windy ridge a mile from part of a range. It's the windy time of year bringing storms, with wind from a canyon every night.

I have gotten used to the wind in the attic, and creaking like a ship. Our bedrooms are upstairs, and sometimes the east wall vibrates a bit and I have to camp out in another bedroom. My husband sleeps through it. The bed is like one of those motel ones you'd put a quarter into...which I thought was pretty weird one night of our honeymoon. Waterbeds I understood, but the vibration bed was just weird.

The leaves are falling fast, golden maples and red/orange ornamental cherry trees and the crab apple trees next to the house to the south. A ton of raking but I love them. Then I love the bare trees and grey days of winter, and could play a Fleetwood Mac song dedicated to them but I won't.

I love all seasons, but spring and fall are favorites for the color shows.

We were 22yrs when we met. 23 when he got his act together. 24yrs when we married.

I think he finally figured out the grass was not greener, prettier or funnier on the other side after the first year and I never begged or acted the fool. No way in hell was I ever chasing a guy. The secret to success was me going on with life and him still lurking around.

I told him recently I wish I had dated a few times to make him jealous or see what he'd do. Unfortunately for me I never played games...or had time to think of games in college. I carried on, my wayward friends and he figured I was a keeper. I told him then to get his act together and we'll talk about it in a year. 8mo later we were married.

G'night and happy trails.

197 Greetings hordlings, from your man in the Orient. Hotter n' hell in Singapore this week - but managed to get some long distance running in and some hiking. Ended one run at a local bar that specializes in showing US sporting events, run by a friend, to watch the World Series at 8:00am. Boy oh boy - did the baseball gods not want the Blue Jays to win that. That being said - very impressive pitching from the Dodgers, especially Yamamoto. With Canada being so pissy lately I am not unhappy to see the trophy stay in the US, but am usually an "anyone but the Red Sox or Dodgers" kind of guy - and with LA being so, well, anti-American, it seems a shame. But I have to say, that was the stuff of legend.

On Mt Washington in NH, have hiked that and taken the cog railway - I would not go near that mountain any time after mid September and certainly not before Mid May or early June. just top be safe.. Once, in late August, we went from a sweltering high 80s on the valley floor to a low 30s with light freezing rain and snowfall at the mountaintop. Yeah, respect that mountain, my hiking brethren, it can and will kill you. Always pack an insulating, impermeable layer for the entire bod.

208 I have a question I've been meaning to ask anyone:

Why does Britney Spears still dance alone in her garbage and dog poo videos. In strange bikini mismatched outfits?I mean, it is obvious she wants attention to apply that dark smudge stuff on her eyes. I have never watched, just see stills and a story I don't read on the UK DM.

She obviously needs a whole lotta help as she's a mess and a half (unsure what ICD code that is).

Then why does the UK DM still publish her decsent into further madness. I remember when she hacked off her hair and attacked someone with an umbrella, but can't remember a week ago. I guess that will be the signal.

I wonder if she has fans or people watching for the signal. She was driving drunk recently and did not get pulled over like I would have (I don't drive drunk). Looks mad as a hatter. Barking mad.

Seeing her weekly photo sort of irritates me.
