Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 22, 2025 [TRex]

20251007-20251006-IMG_20251006_152556156.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb debris. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

This is not AI. This is not fake.

20251020-kickball.jpg

Last Wednesday, we featured ESPN's coverage of the 2024 Microsoft Excel World Championship Finals. I wasn't looking for it, but happened to be flipping through channels over the weekend and stumbled across ESPN coverage of kickball.

Kickball at least has a more credible argument than Excel to be considered a sport.

Guess some respect is due to whomever figured out how to turn kickball into a thing. They call it "Turf Wars" and hold tournaments across the US. The "National Championship" is scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Austin.

Public Service Announcement: Apologies to drivers in cities that I previously characterized as "the worst." Those assessments were made in good faith with solid grounds, but also made before visiting Houston. Wow.

This seems like...something. Micro nuclear reactors for the military?

Army announces Janus Program for next-generation nuclear energy

The Department of Army today announced the launch of the Janus Program, a next-generation nuclear power program that will deliver resilient, secure, and assured energy to support national defense installations and critical missions.

Executive Order 14299, "Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security," directs the Department of War to commence operation of an Army-regulated nuclear reactor at a domestic military installation no later than September 30, 2028.

The program will build commercial microreactors through a nimble, milestone-based contracting model in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), accelerating delivery of advanced energy solutions to the warfighter.

This initiative represents a substantial investment in military and national energy dominance and will help chart the course for widespread deployment of Microreactor Power Plants.

The program will field nuclear microreactors capable of operating independently of the civilian power grid, ensuring uninterrupted power for forces in any environment through collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE). By leveraging its nuclear regulatory authorities in partnership with the DOE, the Army will move forward with microreactors that are safe, resilient, and adaptable.

Shopping for real estate in the North Carolina mountains?

20251021-1-Pari-Dr-Rosman-NC-Building1.jpg

Out of this world: Former North Carolina NASA campus for sale, listed for $30M

The former satellite tracking facility for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Rosman, North Carolina, is now up for sale, according to a listing posted on NAI Piedmont Triad.

The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is a 192-acre site, built in 1963, that features more than 30 buildings, including a welcome center, library, exhibits, dorms and staff housing, and dining facilities. The site is selling for $30 million.

From the listing:

Nestled in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) offers a rare, ready-made gateway to the stars. This scientific landmark is ready for next-gen use, from AI research and data archiving to aerospace communications, STEM education, and even quantum computing.

Originally developed by NASA in the 1960s as part of the space race, this 192-acre campus helped capture the first images of Earth from space, and later, was used by the NSA during the Cold War as a key satellite communications hub. Today, the site is an International Dark Sky Park for public education, surrounded by over a half-million acres of protected national forest, ideal for astronomical observation and scientific research. But it's not just that past that makes PARI extraordinary, it's the future.

Nearly a quarter-billion dollars of investment has primed PARI's infrastructure to nurture the future's innovators, technological breakthroughs, and connections to the stars. Located in an electromagnetically quiet zone, one of only about 100 in the world, PARI is decidedly positioned to leverage its institution-grade elements in an environment where few other sites can.

Some of the scientific and technological highlights include two NASA-built dishes, two radio telescopes, Solar and Jupiter radio arrays, and an Eight-Meter Transient Array. Of the more than 25 optical telescopes, PARI features a Coronado Solarmax 40, Polaris 12-inch Cassegrain, SPACE 10-inch Cassegrain, and a 16-inch DFM Research Grade Telescope with a 7-inch Questar Finder Scope.

What could go wrong with building a utopia in California?

Billionaire-Backed Group California Forever Unveils Master Plan for "Next Great American City"

An ambitious real estate consortium known as California Forever has unveiled its detailed 40-year master plan to build a vast new community from scratch on former farmland northeast of San Francisco.

California Forever CEO Jan Sramek touted the plan as a key step in creating "the next great American city," which the group envisions as the eventual home of 400,000 people living in "affordable homes in safe, walkable neighborhoods."

The plan filed on Tuesday reveals that California Forever now plans to build the master-planned community as an extension of nearby Suisun City, a community of 30,000 that stands to dramatically expand its tax base by annexing the new development.

36 By the map, that planned wonderful city in CA isn't "northeast of San Francisco" except in the most technical sense.
It's closer to Suckatomato both in crow miles and especially in driving miles.
The climate there is not going to be the coastal climate of the SF Bay, but rather the "cook an egg on the sidewalk in the summer" and "feel your way through the Tule fog in the winter" climate of the Central Valley.
"NE of SF" is bait and switch.

The idea generally, the AEC tested all kinds of power plant ideas. Camp Century was another one, constructing a “set it and forget it” nuclear reactor is tougher than it appears. They wanted something requiring minimal oversight and easy modular construction, portability etc etc.

Little known fact: One of the three deceased is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He is the only one that the Army has no control over. His remains may only be disturbed by permission of the NRC because he is considered contaminated.

102 haven't we had microreactors for decades now in use for extremely remote listening stations and other spooky facilities where they officially 'aren't'?
Posted by: Tonypete
-----
I'm not privy to military secrets, but I don't think so.
What we have had is a thermoelectric generator that runs off the heat off some nuclear material, I think one of the Plutonium isotopes.
That Coleman cooler that you plug into the cig lighter is a thermoelectric cooler. It runs by pushing a current through the device, the part inside gets cool, while the part outside the insulated portion (but still inside the external box) get hot. A fan cools that hot part and blows in into your car. Hey, no free lunch.
A thermoelectric generator is the same thing, except that you heat the one part while keeping the other part cool and, viola'! A current flows.
A microreactor is going to a lot more complicated device, with different nuclear material that will be controlled to.increase and decrease the reaction to generate a lot more heat - enough to boil water and run a steam turbine. The "micro" part refers to."smaller than a large industrial campus", probably not the size of a refrigerator like the thermoelectric.

The program will enable real estate developers to install nuclear microreactors capable of operating independently of the incompetently managed, not so ready, power grid, ensuring uninterrupted power for your neighborhood. In co-operation with nuclear regulatory authorities and in partnership with the DOE, real estate developers will move forward with microreactors that are safe, resilient, and adaptable.

Never again will your HVAC shut down when it’s eighteen degrees and everyone’s heat is turned up high. Never again will the power fail when it’s one hundred and eleven and your A/C is pulling a full load.

I bypassed the nuclear mini power and went with a 48KW Generator that will run the whole house, pool heater, shop and underground bunker. Have enough propane to run full throttle for 4 weeks. Much cheaper than Nuclear.

The claim that a 155 mm artillery shell fired from Camp Pendleton, detonated several hundred feet in the air above Interstate 5 is looking kind of weak. Nobody in the assembled crowd saw a large shell detonate in midair?

Governor Newsom (a confirmed sociopath) ostentatiously and self righteously said he would shut down the highway to protect the public from Trump's recklessness. And then a handful of magic fragments appeared, that slightly dented the hood of a CA highway patrol car. And no observed shellburst. I smell a rat.

If this was faked, let it be known. If a shell exploded, let it be known.

Any red-legs about who can talk from experience about the technical details here?

As noted by Semi-Literate Thug, a bursting 155mm shell - in broad daylight, and at fairly low altitude (just starting its arc after being fired about 1/4 mile away, I think) would be seen/heard by hundreds of witnesses.

Saw a photo of the chunk of metal that fell on a CHP cruiser. About the size of a small torch lighter. And that was the only debris reported/claimed to have fallen. And as noted by the initial USMC statement, everything that day was done according to long-established safety protocols.

190 I remember seeing cool full-on amphibious exercises at Pendleton while riding north in the family car as a kid. One time I asked dad to pull over (as many were doing) to watch - there were armored vehicles swarming all over the beach-side of I-5, very close, and guys hanging on lines from Hueys crossing over the freeway. Dad said no. But I still got a great look.

This area is probably one of the only ones left in America where one can encounter watch military operations without leaving a developed area. I-5 along Pendleton has long been a fun drive when the Marines are active. Miramar is always active and low-flying screeching F-18s/-35s are commonplace all around the area - my favorite cigar shop has a good view/earful of them when they're circling doing touch-n-gos.

And if you're timing is right, on the third hole at Coronado public golf course (a beautiful and ridiculously cheap course), as you walk up to approach your second shot, just yards away, in the water, SEAL instructors in kayaks with megaphones will be yelling at BUDS sailors flipping/righting their small rafts in a team-work exercise. Always fun to explain to the incredulous out of towners.

209 Blonde Morticia, oh yes, MCRD, landing or taking off (right side of airplane). Take-offs usually even better, when they're on the obstacle course or climbing the ropes. Ooorah.

Landing, always get left side. The fleet at 32nd Street and the carriers at North Island, plus downtown (shockingly close for newbies). Most "attention-intensive" landing in the US according to airline pilots.

Unfortunately they've stopped, but the Marines used to shoot Ma deuces on their east range (formerly Camp Elliott, WWII mortar training base), and if the weather was right, I could hear the pleasing metallic chink-a-chink-a-chink of the 50 cal on my back porch.

15 years ago or so, there was a non-binding local proposition on the ballot asking the USMC to give up Miramar to the city for a new airport. It was trounced on election day. One of the last good election results in this area, and reassuring. A good amount of default normal pro-military sentiment - somehow - survives here.

220 Hello, Horde! 😊💕

Today is DD#1's birthday (#39) - she had a connecting flight at DFW, so we drove out there with a Mama's Pizza for her and sat outside of Terminal A (it was a beautiful day) and spent some time with her. Poor thing just texted us - she is STILL at DFW; her flight was delayed (again).

I spent the afternoon getting my front right tooth fragment extracted in preparation for an implant. Apparently my body processes dental numbing medication REALLY fast - they had to numb my mouth THREE times while they were doing the extraction 😲😲😲

231 Genius! Lets build another 400K city, that does not have any industry to support itself.

Once upon a time, cities were essentially aggregations of labor... whatever the city built, it housed the labor needed.

From Detroit and Cars, to Los A with Trains and Aircraft and movies... to New York banking and business... hell, Chicago was once a YUGE slaughter plant.

Now, most cities don't produce enough real products to support the drain on the economy its population creates. Look at the Bay Area... built around shipping, but now the vast majority of labor has nothing to do with it. Now most cities are just Yuge Human Storage facilities... with most of the population just supporting the rest of the population.

So yeah! Lets take productive FARMLAND, where shit is actually produced, and created a city with no industry! GENIUS!

233 Sympathy, TiFW. I had an industrial accident and got debris in my eyes. In '88, I had a procedure to clean up scar tissue under my right eyelid. It took three shots of lidocaine to get numbed.
In '98, I had the left eye done. I told the doc about the previous and she said that she would use pricocaine. So, shot then procedure and then walk up to the front to write a check. By this time, the injection was wearing off. Just under an hour since the stick. Normal time for pricocaine is 4 to 6 hours.

Were they planning on doing the implant on the day of extraction? I went through hell with mine. They extracted the tooth, cut my frigging gums, did the bone implant, was in pain for a week, then I had to wait 6 months. 6 months later, the bastard cuts my gum open and says yeah, the graft didn't take, sometimes I don't have luck with front teeth, you'll probably need a bridge. WHAT?? I go see my dentist who sent me to this bastard, and he says If I was you I would go for the implant. I said he can't do it. Oh I got another guy who is cutting edge. The new guy tells me yeah no problem, it should have been done when it was extracted, I'll get a nurse from Saint peters to extract a few vials of blood, I'll use your DNA to make the bone graft, no pain, no swelling, and the implant will be done. Sure as shit, by 5pm, there was no pain, no pain killers needed, no swelling, and the implant was done.

268 128 After Rickover got his nuclear submarines, the Air Force decided what they really needed was a nuclear powered bomber, that could stay in the air for months at a time. Really.

Contracts were let, and testing proceeded on nuclear powered jet engines. Turns out lightweight aircraft made of thin aluminium and such, and heavy power plants, shielding, don’t really mix very well. Nothing was ever built that could fly, and JFK deleted the program soon after inauguration.

Not to mention the potential huge disaster of an aircraft with a functioning nuclear reactor crashing into a populated area. And military planes used to crash a lot back then, especially cutting edge ones.

284 For those of you paying attention, Trump signed an emergency declaration for Western AK today to the tune of $25M. All the villages wiped out in the typhoon will receive aid. The issue is that winter is closing in, and not much can be done to rebuild the villages before it is impossible. Whole houses floated away, everything is covered in mud, there's not infrastructure or heavy equipment out there to fix thing.... etc.

Meanwhile, AK folks have rallied to provide shelter, clothing and food. The NG has airlifted everyone they could find down to Anchorage, and emergency shelter is giving way to individual housing solutions. Kids have been enrolled in Anchorage schools, families are being fed, people have donated Native food items (muktuk, seal oil, caribou meat, etc.) and everyone has winter gear in hand.

Waiting for the feds was always dicey up here. Very few lost lives in this one, which is an absolute miracle.

295 Waiting for the feds was always dicey up here. Very few lost lives in this one, which is an absolute miracle.

297 262 Were they planning on doing the implant on the day of extraction?
