62 Gossip can become very ugly and mean. Why does it never work towards good? Why do people always want to make others out to be worse than they already are?

Is it fun to say nasty, spiteful and untrue things about your neighbors? Or your “friends?”

Posted by: nurse ratched at October 21, 2025 09:42 AM (mT+6a)

63 On the surface it's sort of a standard 'fun' Rockwell piece with the varied and very expressive faces and telling a story. But there is an underlying tension. Even if the matter is not earth shaking, it isn't a nice portrait of human nature: too much delight in hearing and passing along the nasty information. In the last pairing, even the husband going after his wife for starting things doesn't erase the damage.

It's an interesting juxtaposition of amusement and disgust.

In the early 1960's, college professors were peddling studies that claimed such strings of "passing it on" would result in much altered tales, modified by the participants' prejudices. The woman hearing her tale repeated after such repeated "modifications" may well be expressing astonishment at what her tale has become.

Posted by: capercaillie4901 at October 21, 2025 09:50 AM (f1WVr)

109 I guess this goes along with never pissing off a reporter - Rockwell had unlimited paint to respond:

Have you heard the story behind Norman Rockwell’s cover The Gossips? Some say the painting was Rockwell’s revenge on a woman in Arlington, Vermont, who’d spread an ugly rumor about him. He re-created the life of the rumor, beginning with an elderly woman whispering about Rockwell to a neighbor. From there the tale takes wing, speeding through town from one eager gossip to the next, until it comes back to Rockwell himself, who confronts the rumor’s originator in the bottom right.

Posted by: Lizzy at October 21, 2025 09:50 AM (GbwPZ)

110 It reminds me of something I saw in person, a month ago. By coincidence, two lady cops in town quit the force the same day. Both worked at schools.

Also by coincidence, I happen to know them both - one just quit because she was moving. The other quit because she took an offer from the school where she was a cop to be a teacher (the kids all love her).

But, because they work at the schools, the moms in town all immediately spun up the Facebook smear machine.

Within 24 hours, my wife (who uses FB) was all "lol, a bunch of these moms are saying it's because there's a harassment scandal in the PD. But some think they were caught having a lesbian affair."

The woman hearing her tale repeated after such repeated "modifications" may well be expressing astonishment at what her tale has become.

135 This Could Be the Worst News for Democrats About the Shutdown

“In 2018/2019, 61%, more than three in five Americans, blamed Trump a great deal for that particular shutdown,” he said. This time, however, “48% of Americans blamed Trump a great deal for this particular shutdown — it’s a different world.” That’s a 13-point drop, a statistical freefall in public blame assignment. ...
For Democrats, these aren’t just numbers on a poll—they’re alarm bells screaming red. The latest government shutdown, designed to hobble President Trump, has backfired spectacularly. Instead of weakening him, it seems to have reinforced his base and showcased his ability to govern without relying on Congress. Any illusions the left had about holding leverage over Trump have been shattered, and they should rethink their strategy.

“President Peñalver is an exceptional leader steeped in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition who brings a wealth of experience in higher education, a global mindset, a commitment to social justice and academic excellence, and a bold vision for Georgetown’s future,” the chair of the board stated. “We look forward to him joining our Georgetown community.”

I recommend this article explaining why a subset of Boomers are the way they are.

Why Woke Woodstock Boomers Must Protest
Why are there so many boomers at these protests?

Some people go to high school reunions, and they try to get “reacquainted” with that boy or girl they dated in their teen years. They do this, not because they still really are attracted to ‘the person,’ but rather it’s a last-ditch effort to reconnect with their own lost youth, their glory days, and to do this, they feel the need to be with someone who was there...
Another issue is somewhat related. Many older boomers feel rudderless. This is a generation that, in huge numbers, rejected religion. They led the way on divorce, abortion, broken families, which they broke, while serving their own capitalist desires by ushering in the dot-com boom and bust, massive stock gains, and huge tech innovations, creating Silicon Valley.

And I recommend this YD comment from a couple hours back:

These crunchy old Leftists fucks have been jerking each other off about their protesting glory days for more than fifty years. And because of the Leftist proclivity for entering media, all of it catered to their grandiose delusions of adequacy with endless hagiographies of their ephemeral hippie moment, their largely unpopular protest movements, their drug culture, and of course, an unremitting cavalcade of Beatles retrospectives.

As a result, they have a vastly overblown opinion of themselves, and now view their regrettable, misspent youth through the diaphanous veil of time, which softens the ugliness of it all.

This is their last chance to relive those halcyon Days of Whine and Roses, and they're grasping onto it with all the strength left in their bony old fingers.

It's not about politics. It's just their monumental, towering narcissism asserting itself one last time.

OK I'm going to point this out once again. I was in Vietnam toward the end of the War (1970 - 1972) I'm 77. That makes me one of the youngest Vietnam era people. Nobody who was part of the Thing is as young as I am. More than half of the males who were part of the Thing have died of old age, since the life expectancy for males is 77. 210 The Gossips
Norman Rockwell
The Gossips Oil on canvas, painting for The Saturday Evening Post cover, 1948.

>Vintage Everyday, The Story Behind Norman Rockwell’s Most Famous Cover “The Gossips” in 1948, May 03, 2021

1940s, behind the scenes, humor & hilarious, illustration, life & culture, photography, portraits, work of art

It begins, "Have you heard the story behind Norman Rockwell’s cover The Gossips? Some say the painting was Rockwell’s revenge on a woman in Arlington, Vermont, who’d spread an ugly rumor about him. He re-created the life of the rumor, beginning with an elderly woman whispering about Rockwell to a neighbor. From there the tale takes wing, speeding through town from one eager gossip to the next, until it comes back to Rockwell himself, who confronts the rumor’s originator in the bottom right."

Reading the entire article recommended.

Like this painting & would hang it with rotational art.

Thanks.

Legacy cable network and tv properties are becoming a burden in an era of cord cutting. Comcast is doing the same thing and I think Disney will after Iger goes.

Online ad sales by aggregators like Google is eating legacy media's ad revenues to the point that radio and newspapers are almost dead, tv revenue is dying, and online ad revenue for independents is down 90 percent (Insty's own figures) from what it was.

If Big Pharma is no longer allowed to air ads for drugs, then a lot of the legacy broadcast and cable media on life support now will die.

307 Back when gays were trying to claim every important western cultural figure as theirs, just closeted, I think it was Smithsonian magazine, of all things, pushing a story that maybe, just maybe, Rockwell was a closet pedo/MAP. His family or trust came out swinging against the completely unprovable accusations, and the accusations got swiftly dropped. I think the gay community realized they needed to tone down claiming everyone with non proof.

They used the famous painting of the runaway kid with the hobo sack at the soda counter as an example, with the kindly cop talking to him and gently convincing him to go back home. That the cop was "too" friendly to the kid, if you catch my drift. And Rockwell was hinting at secret desires.

Only sickos think this way. They've forgotten there was once a part of America where small town cops behaved like that.

341 Does real hardship make a person?

1930s, Hardships of the Great Depression
The American Youth Congress (AYC): Formed in 1934, eventually collaborated with 1st Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
Radical student activists: Many students on campuses became politicized and organized protests for workers' rights, peace, and racial equality. Advocating for programs like Social Security. Unions influenced New Deal policies.
The Scottsboro Boys: This landmark case involved nine Black teenagers, some as young as 12, who were falsely accused of rape in Alabama in 1931. Hobos, rail riders.

1960s: The Greensboro Four: The Little Rock Nine; Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture). Decade of political assassinations.

1970s: Mohamed Ali; Billie Jean King; Jim Thorpe. Inflation, political upheaval.

1980s: Self expression.

I think real hardship does. And also some people create their own hardships to be able to claim need & belonging.

The teacher unions get out the vote on their side for these spring elections and no ad buys mean an awful lot of people don't even know there's an election going on unless they inadvertently pass a polling place with the sign out.
First they hear of it is the next day, when the results (all leftist wins) are reported in the press.

350 I first heard this floated by Melonie Mac, and I kind of dismissed it. But it makes too much sense, the way people are behaving now. It's not like the demons the Bible just said hey, let's stop possessing people! Our bad!

Melonie had a YouTube channel where she reads the Bible out loud every day. It's fun to see a cute young tattooed nerdy gamer reading Bible verses!

No matter who reads it, the truth is the truth. If it says demons, it means demons.

353 Rockwell's painting looks like Arthur Schnitzler's "La Ronde," although with gossip instead of sex.

354 Sorry I missed this one. I always love a good Rockwell. I have an address book (remember those?) with this picture on the front.
