The Blind Man's Meal
Pablo Picasso

I'm unsure why Picasso became the icon he is; although self-promotion and his vile politics did a lot to keep him in the limelight. But... he did have talent. And there is an argument to be made that he was the last "Great" artist...certainly no one has achieved anywhere near his popularity since his death.

If beautiful architecture counts as art, then the Obama "library" is a fat, naked guy on an Ottoman.

For you new readers, here is the art in question. And here.

The Left always disparage Trump for putting his name on his buildings.

The thing is, he puts his name on the things *he's built*, while the people in DC love to put their names on things that *the taxpayers* have built and paid for, such as schools, government offices, ships, etc.. The ultimate 'you didn't build that.'

"... imagines a fictional encounter between a young Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein at a Parisian bar in 1904. The comedy explores their contrasting creative processes and the future of art and science through witty dialogue, while also featuring a cast of eccentric characters. 340 Here is the plan for my Presidential library:

It will be sited in the mountains above the Blue Ridge Parkway Viaduct. This will, unfortunately, necessitate some excavation of the glorious natural features, to accomodate the colossal size of the ziggurat, and its large surrounding fairgrounds - but it will be constructed from the harvested stone.

The ziggurat itself will be made from native sandstone. It will be opulent, with its first layer colonnaded by native limestone pillars in the Doric style, with solid gold capitals - 500 of them, one for each State, with each one's name punched into it. Not leaf or plate - solid gold only.

The interior will not be opulent. It will be austere - a massive viewing chamber clad in basalt, with crystal braziers bearing eternal flames that dimly light it, with brighter flames above my onyx sarcophagus, toward the end of the chamber. My sarcophagus will have a crystal plinth atop it, that holds a single copy of my only book - "End of the Left: The Singular Achievement of Our Exalted and Beloved Ultrapresident YD," by The Exalted and Beloved Ultrapresident YD.

A lot of early presidents have their files at the Library of Congress as do many, but not all, Supreme Court Justices.

Obama's 'library' is in part because all his records were supposed to be digitized and stored offsite. That is increasingly common nowadays in libraries as they convert over to digital rather than a holding place for printed books and documents. National Archives is leading the charge in part.

=====

If I understand the Senate rules around filibuster correctly (half remembered from whig's explanations), it's that in this moment, on this business, each senator has one opportunity to take the floor and speak. A cloture vote is just about ending that period of debate early.

The filibuster and cloture vote become unnecessary after every senator have taken their opportunity to speak.

The governors-general may take a great deal of creative liberty in displaying their local artisans' work with these effigies.

If senators had to do that, you would see a lot more older senators retire or quit filibustering when the wind blows. One solution to the filibuster problem is to use the nuclear option to return the rules back to talking filibusters that stop senate business until resolved but still only require 60 votes for cloture. That would reduce the frequencies of them.

Thanks, that was well done.

Never seen Dr. Who, But The Wifey was a big fan decades ago before we met.

Where do I know that actor (Tony Curran) portraying Vincent from?

Ah, The Pillars of the Earth.

375 Picasso kinda sucked at art.

Look at his “Pink” period that preceded this, his “Blue” period. He had all the technical skills you could think of and made art with happy themes. He turned his back on that, undoubtedly for personal reasons, and began painting like this, but that was just the beginning. He had as many phases as turns in his life. He didn’t always use all his talent. He didn’t have to. But he was always serious about art.

376 "Authors are told in writing advice books not to use flashbacks."

My peeve is what I call the John Carson writing style, where the author gives you the Big Reveal and then spends 11 chapters building up to it.

Exception: really wish GoT had gone that direction with "Winter is coming". Although now I understand how the wife feels after sex.

For visitors to Boston who want to see the decline of architecture and beauty in the USA, it can be done within the space of a few blocks:

Start at the Old State House on Washington Street.

Proceed to the Old City Hall at 45 School Street (now housing a Ruth's Chris Steak House).

End at Boston City Hall at 1 City Hall Square.

I've always thought that using temporary structures at the White House to expand seating capacity for state events was embarrassing for the country. Inflatable columns and walls compared to the European masonry and vaulted ceilings is infuriating.

391 The filibuster and cloture vote become unnecessary after every senator have taken their opportunity to speak.

I did not know that. So in theory, the Majority Leader could call out every member by name, ask if they want to speak to the issue at hand, and after calling all 100 (or however many are present) call for a vote? So why doesn't he do that?

394 If I understand the Senate rules around filibuster correctly (half remembered from whig's explanations), it's that in this moment, on this business, each senator has one opportunity to take the floor and speak. A cloture vote is just about ending that period of debate early.

The filibuster and cloture vote become unnecessary after every senator have taken their opportunity to speak.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Yes. There is the Senate rule that states a senator can only rise and speak twice on the matter under discussion (gets complicated with amendments, and so on) but once the speaker's list is exhausted, then vote occurs without cloture because no one is left able to speak to the matter. This rule has existed since the Senate was created. Ironically, Sen Merkeley's legislative aide has a 2022 article on it (non technical).
https://tinyurl.com/cxpvvb27

Congressional Research Service, CRS, has the technical explanation. https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/96-548

======
The Senate rule has to be invoked by the majority that limits debate, two, the amount of time on the floor. Senate rarely meets 5 days a week or even 24-7. The non technical article above mentions it would take about 500 hours or so of debate if each senator took 5 hours for debate (about 21 days running 24-7 and 7 days per week). Normal Senate workdays would take 62.5 days at 8 hours per day session with 7 days per week). Move that to 40 hours per week and no weekends, it rises to 87.5 legislative days.

And Senators would have to be in Washington close by because a quorum call could be expected at any time.
