Sunday Overnight Open Thread - October 19, 2025 [Doof]

doof-moonlit-sky.jpg

The Sunday ONT is here. And so are you. As are the gray boxes. Content is MoMe focused, but this is an open thread, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

***

MoMe Hangover

Lots of discussion in the gun thread about TxMoMeX. Let's keep that conversation going here, too!

-----

Here's what the horses at the ranch think of our little get-together on THEIR turf.

-----

Perhaps you left Corsicana late in the day and this is your goal as you travel westward

-----

Two RV parks I spotted in my post-MoMe travels. One is perfect for me, and one for my fellow ONT COB.

MoMe appropriate song titles. Also fitting for any evening at Club ONT.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

MoMe 2025– Fashion Fiesta
By Piper
October 19, 2025 – Somewhere Near Corsicana

Forget Milan’s runways and Cannes red carpet. Instead, imagine the AoSHQ comment section in 3D, stomping through a field like it’s the last stand at a Buc-ee’s. From tragic tees to trucker-hat triumphs, here’s the lowdown on who wore what at MoMe 2025. Spoiler: No one wore enough sunscreen, and the collective fedora count hit critical mass. Let's dive in and dissect the looks, shall we?

Sock Puppet : Tragedy

Sock Puppet, the elusive poster, emerged from his lair in what can only be described as post-apocalyptic dadcore. His fit? A faded black Ace of Spades HQ tour tee with more holes than a bad alibi, tucked haphazardly into bootcut jeans . Topped with a trucker hat emblazoned with "Moron Monarch" in bedazzled rhinestones, it was definitely something and that something was not good.

Verdict: 5/10 for commitment to the brand, docked points for the untucked shirttail that screamed "I give up on society and laundry." Sock Puppet, if you're reading this, your posts are bangers, but this outfit was not.

IMG_5404rr.jpg

Ride’em Cowgirl: Stunning

REC rode in like a Lone Star goddess who could outwit a troll and outcook a Food Network star. She rocked denim in a way that screamed “I wrangle cattle and your feelings,” cinched with a leather belt wide enough to block traffic. Her turquoise choker was so massive it could’ve sunk the Titanic, it definitely gave a “Texas Forever” charm. She glided through the crowd and the dance floor with the grace of a woman who’s navigated the negative nellies in the comments unscathed.

Verdict: 10/10. REC is MoMe’s style queen, elegant and ready to send a liberal to therapy with one arched brow.

IMG_5406rr.jpg

Esthetician and Her Glitter Posse: Swirls and Shenanigans

Enter Ester (last name redacted to protect the innocent), the undisputed champion of "What Happens at MoMe Stays at MoMe... Except This Outfit." She strutted in like she owned the Alamo, rocking a top that boldly declared "Triggered? Good." In swirly script. The real MVPs? Chunky white sneakers caked in what we pray is mud (but suspect is brisket grease) and a fanny pack slung crossbody, stuffed with ammo, a Celcius and enough sass to crash a server farm. Her posse mirrored the chaos: one in a tie dye tee, psychedelic swirls clashing gloriously with acid-wash shorts, another in a star-spangled sundress screaming “Betsy Ross, but make it viral,” this gang turnt up, it was absolute fire.

Verdict: 9/10 for unhinged energy. They’re the fashion equivalent of a Roman candle—bright, reckless, and banned in blue states.

IMG_5407rr.jpg

Let’s call him “Tiki Torch Ted” : Because Bob from NSA is too obvious.

From his suspiciously tinted Suburban, to his blue polo shirt and khakis pressed sharp enough to cut steak, Bob’s, um, Ted’s vibe screamed “Federale” The real giveaway? Aviator sunglasses he never took off, even during the square dance, and a Bluetooth earpiece blinking like the Fourth of July. Bob, I mean Ted, tried to play it cool, asking, “So, what’s your sign?” while taking notes on a napkin.

Verdict: 3/10. Points docked because Bob, um, Ted, you’re fooling nobody. Your outfit’s so “undercover” it’s basically glowing neon.

IMG_5408rr.jpg

Paolo: Putting the Wild in Wildcard

Paolo, the MoMe’s resident Rico Suave, swaggered in like he’d just escaped an Enrique Iglesias concert. His look? A purple silk shirt unbuttoned to the navel, flashing a serious chest hair situation, paired with red leather pants —because Texas heat doesn’t give a darn about your color wheel, apparently. The straw cowboy hat perched on his head screamed “I’m here to party, not parse.” He was spotted double-fisting Shiners and arguing about tax policy with a fence post.

Verdict: 6.5/10 for a style as colorful as some of his takes. Paolo’s the guy you call when you are in desperate need for a piña colada after getting caught in the rain.

IMG_5409rr.jpg

The Lurkers: Dressed Like They Got Lost on the Way

Then there’s the lurker squad, those comment-section phantoms who crawl out of their digital caves once a year, squinting like they’ve never seen sunlight. “Lurker Len” (name changed, but he knows who he is) sported a plain gray Hanes tee, cargo shorts with more pockets than a Ponzi scheme, and Crocs so beat they looked like they’d survived a zombie apocalypse. His only flair? A lanyard with the words “I showed up, don’t make me talk” etched out in red sharpie. Joining along was “i don’t know a niC,” rocking a windbreaker straight out of a 1985 Sears catalog, stretchy jeans, and a trucker hat blaring “Keep Texas Red” in …neon yellow. I know, right?

Verdict: 4/10. They’re MoMe’s unsung agents—zero effort, and wardrobes that say, “I’m here for the tri tip, not the spotlight.”

IMG_5410rr.jpg

The Takeaway: Style’s a Mess, But It’s Our Mess

The morons came, they conquered, they got sauce on their shirts, and they did it with a middle finger to the fashion elite. Trends to steal? Plaid’s your wingman, trucker hats are your tiara, and if your t-shirt doesn’t make a liberal rage TikTok in their car, you’re slacking.

Next year, we're petitioning for a red carpet.

She remarked that I was acting slightly stranger than usual.

I told her that I was just delivering the hugs from every person at the MoMe that told me, "Give Bride of PI a big hug from me!"

She then got a big grin on her face and told me she missed y'all even more.

17 To all of the newbies (and also some of the long-timers), it was lovely meeting you, and I hope that you will come back again next year!

Please don't be offended if I don't remember your name (or face) the next time that I see you - I am not very good about mingling with different groups of people when at a MoMe, and it usually takes me an average of 3-4 MoMes before my brain finally attaches a name to a face.

That's why I like it when people wear name tags! 😂😂😂

Linux Mint 22.2 successfully installed. Farewell MS Windows 10, you were useful. Alas, you're assholes. I have Linux Mint 21.2 on a refurbished Dell and it runs fine, sort of. I've discovered why it's 'refurbished'. Keyboard issues and it seems to run a bit hot. I don't play games on it, so I mostly get away with it. Locks up occasionally. It's not my main laptop, so (shrugs).

30 Someone asked in an earlier thread why the No Kings protestors wore yellow as their color revolution brand color.

Supposedly they were debating between the two colors of the women's suffragette movement, purple or yellow. My guess is they flipped a coin and it came up yellow. Why no kings needs a women's suffragette color theme, I don't know.

Do you have a copy of "THE" cookbook? It's on page 54. Note, it calls for cake flour and in the past several years I have used all-purpose einkorn flour. Also, it's the milk chocolate version. For dark chocolate, sub dark brown sugar, chocolate *fudge* pudding, unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate chips.

53 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The scheme to threaten Russia with Tomahawk missiles fell apart, as Putin called Donaldus Maximus just before Zelensky arrived in the US. Perhaps Putin casually mentioned that the USA doesn't have a monopoly on missiles that could be sent to unfriendly countries that border someone's homeland?
2. Yet another US-supplied, billion dollar Patriot missile defense system was destroyed in Ukraine. This is why they can't have good things.
3. On the ground, there was zero good news for the Ukrainians, as the Russians continue to slowly push forward and surround cities that once were major defensive hubs.

We will definitely figure out how to get enough for everyone to get some next year.

If you are ever in Fort Worth, stop by the Swiss Pastry Shop and ask for their (non-traditional) Black Forest Cake. Unfortunately, it cannot be shipped - they have tried to figure out a way to do it, but no luck. For those with food allergies, it is gluten-free, but it does have almonds and dairy.

106 53 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:

(The world will then presumably enter a utopian eternal steady-state of relative national strengths, and of the balance of power.)

He really thinks nobody ever thought of that before. He's even threatening to publish a book about it. How do dunces like this rise to such lofty, lavishly compensated careers? He must have had to suck a lot of d*ck. (Well, it's NYC, so d*ck-sucking is probably the very least demeaning thing he had to do.)

The first people to 'take the purtple' were Roman emperors. Kings are such nobodies in comparison to emperors. How many local kings perished under the emperors, hmm?

The protesters like emperors because they watch too much Star Wars and Emperor Palpatine. They are The Dark Side. With some never knowing their fathers, either.

206 The news that shocked the Social Media World... I hope Milo recovers.

MILO@Nero

I am 41, and the doctor thinks I have a brain tumor. I’ve been passing out a lot lately. Monstrous headaches. My vision is unpredictably bad. I’m not hungry—and I’m always, always hungry. Tingly fingers. The works. And of course I’ve been ignoring these symptoms for months. Or is it years? “That must be a good sign,” I tell him. “Surely I’d be dead by now.” He just looks at me.

I’ve had an MRI and there’s a dark spot, black as sin, but the technician wasn’t absolutely sure, and my doctor isn’t an oncologist, although his wife is. Something is in there that shouldn’t be. Something is not right. So I’m having another one and seeing a specialist in a few days. It’s not 100%. It might not be cancer.

My gut says I will be fine. He wouldn’t have spared me from AIDS just to take me out like this. Whatever it is, I suddenly regret saying, “I’m ready to be with Jesus!” so many times over the past couple of years. God is like that. One of his favorite punishments is giving you what you asked for....

Who knew all those grandmas and grandpas were commies?

The old age protesters are the last vestiges of main stream media viewership. And we clearly see the results of that psy-op.

I think about an interview with Brandon Straka in 2018, when he first walked away, broke out of the bubble, something he said in humor: Rachel Maddow lied to me!

Once one stops being spoon-fed their 'opinions', a whole new world opens up. But the elderly still like the newspaper/tv spoon-fed news as it's all they've ever known; it's comfortable, like a warm housecoat.

218 If you read the history of the atomic bomb, nuclear weapons, they went through the exact same scenarios during WWII.

I seem to recall these discussions were had at the highest levels, even before the first test at Alamogordo. The big brains decided that with weapons this powerful, there would be No More Wars. The US government even offered (after the war) to destroy its arsenal. The great fear was an inevitable nuclear arms race.

Hydrogen weapons, that use an atomic bomb to set them off, have no theoretical upper size limit. Keep adding Deuterium, it just gets mo bigger. So the thought was, an international global governance body would oversee everything and prevent other nations from building nukes. The Soviets (sort of) agreed to this, but as a practical matter there was no way to inspect such a large country for violating the agreements.

“We won’t build hydrogen weapons. Therefore, the Soviets will be good guys too” was considered hopelessly naive. Because it was. The US government probably should have nuked Moscow or the Kremlin at least in the brief 4 year window where they had a monopoly on the Bomb. This was not a radical idea at the time.

231 Greetings from Nashvegas, our stopover on the way back to Ohio (but here's hoping our city isn't gone by the time we get there). Mrs. Schnorflepuppy enjoyed meeting y'all at her first TXMoMe, and a a bonus, she got to experience Buc-ee's for the first time as well.

As for me, I'm overwhelmed (as is usually the case after a TXMoMe) in many ways, not the least of which is gratitude. Thanks to our hosts Rancher Bob, & Cow Horse Queen for opening your property to a cadre of nomads. Gratitude is also due to Ben Had and Weasel for organizing and keeping everyone safe. Also kudos to Mr. & Mrs. Pete Bog and to CBD (and all the other talented cooks I neglected) for all the fine cuisine.

Great to see everyone who made it - and for them as didn't make it, it's not too soon to start planning for next year!

So happy you are doing so well and went to the MoMe!

I am the most fooled person you could ever meet.

I was super impressed with the people!

I blame this on the snipe hunt I went on in 5th grade with the father of a friend. I had just moved to the country from the city. I really believed a snipe pecked me from a paper bag, and still wonder. Believed in Santa Claus long after my friends. I could go on but won't. I am not stupid but just believe.

I may be olde but I am still very naive. My husband would tell you this is true.

Brain worms can be fixed, so I read.

I am, however, basically not wanting worms because of some knowlege of a pediatric office I worked in and giving advice for pinworms and flashlights. This gave me the heebie jeebies.

Then bring on any worms like tapeworms and I am out. Not going to chance it. Altho I did go barefoot in pastures as a teen, which could have given me hook worms, but apparently did not.

This concludes my worm lecture and I guess I need to get my ancient self to bed.

252 I suppose one imponderable that I haven’t been able to grok, the Boomers received a much better general education on average than many subsequent generations. In particular they should be able think more logically and think critically.

Critical thinking has nothing to do with Critical theory but the former has largely been extinguished while the latter is basically the core curriculum. What I’m getting at, the youngest generations have an excuse, sort of.

If anything, hippies should be largely if not wholly antagonistic towards Democrats. That didn’t hapoen. Not to say they should instead have morphed into card carrying Birchers, but at best a “pox on both their houses” kind of thing. I still think the big media outlets figured out tele-hypnosis. She refinished the case, herself (furniture was her 'thing') and had it restrung, the action rebuilt & hammers re-padded-- the whole nine yards-- and it's lovely. No idea what they spent for all that. Probably don't want to know.

Enjoyed as much as we watched more than I thought I would. Will wait to watch it when I can get a real version. So, I don't recommend https://youtu.be/7EF0FdIAlAk but there it is while it lasts.

364 Ok, caught up on the commenting and now it's well past time to clock out. 🕐

Dr Pepper was this Oklahoman's sodypop of choice as a kid. Or Nehi Grape.

When I got to college in Wisconsin, my frat brothers — mostly East Coast kids exiled to the Midwest — refused to let me keep ordering sodypop when we went out for pizza, and forced me to learn to drink beer. (Late bloomer.) So I learned to imbibe.

I horrified them later when I started mixing rum and Dr Pepper.

Looking at Stellarium for tonight, I see I should be able to see the ISS pass by around 6:01AM. Moving so fast, it rises in the west, and sets in the east, of course.

It will pop up over the horizon, somewhere around NW, but won't be sunlit until after it's passed the meridian. It should get in the sunlight around 6:01AM and stay above the horizon for a minute or so. I may try to see if I can see it. Should be fairly bright.

Just looking, I'm about 2F cooler than the surrounding stations (within 1 - 2 miles). There are some others around as cool as me, and they are in the low spots as well. This is "cold air drainage" as my late cousin used to go on about.

It can do some weird stuff depending on "micro topography". For example, it can get cold right after dark, then warm up a few degrees quickly as the cold air "drains" to the low spots.

I'd notice that a lot driving tractors. Usually, around sunset, the low spots would be cooler. For example, driving home in a T-shirt, it could get right chilly in the low spot, then warm back up.

And occasionally, it could even be bass-ackwards, with the low spots warmer. I remember in the middle of the day, getting close to a creek could feel muggier -- due the higher local humidity due to evaporation.

It just hit me to update Stellarium's satellite orbital elements. It does that automatically every 3 days, and that's usually good enough, but orbits do perturb (precession and all that good stuff). With the update, that changed the visible part of the trajectory here noticeably, shifting the time window a little bit later.

Since the altitude of the ISS is so low, parallax is very significant, and even a slight change can make a noticeable difference.

For example, Mike Hammer is about ~70 miles away. However where it would appear in his local sky this morning would be very different.

It's the primary heat source, besides portable electric space heaters. The baseboard heaters were disconnected at the panel box, years ago. I'm sure there's a reason for that!

Yet another reason I may never make it to TXmome: Pellet heater needs to be "fed" or the pipes could freeze. Guess I could just use a bunch of RV antifreeze, though. Drain all the lines & toilets, and be sure all the traps have a/f...

Haven't checked the $$$ of that. There's gas line under the road, and to near neighbors, but none to this place.

This house never had a furnace, so no ductwork. Low ceilings.

I was also considering a mini-split system, but haven't got an estimate.

Suppose a heating upgrade of *any kind* would be a good idea for "spend-down" in case hubs needs to go on medicaid...

I figured, almost 5 years ago, that he would pass before it ever got to this point.
