Gotta get a move on. Quote of the day/week/month:
Gad Saad @GadSaad My daughter's class is going on a school trip to NYC. Many of the parents are incredibly upset that the school would visit the United States where there is a "daily genocide of women, trans people, and people of color." The parents are not upset at what is happening in Canada or that @ZohranKMamdani is going to become mayor of NYC. They are terrified for their children's safety because of @realDonaldTrump. I have spent my entire academic career studying human behavior and human decision making, and yet I'm astounded by this level of suicidal stupidity. 4:31 PM · Oct 17, 2025 25.9M Views https://tinyurl.com/yeu7mk6k Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at October 19, 2025 04:06 AM (okFN+) 5

@5/Biden's Dog: GoFundMe has created nonprofit pages for more than 1 million charities using public data.
And hasn't informed the charities, so they're taking in funds in other people's names, without informing them. This reeks of massive fraud. No kings day.....local news showed lots of pictures of all the local gatherings. They showed groups in all the small villages holding up signs demanding this and that. It was a nice day and most were older people (probably former 1960's hippies). One place even had a chicken barbecue. It hard to say it was a smashing success, but hopefully the hotdogs and chicken were good.

The iPhone Air’s biggest problem is a $999 price tag for a phone with lesser specs than the base iPhone 17 at $799, which is selling really well.

Johnny Von Neumann was the classic “absent minded professor” in a lot of ways. A brilliant mathematician and physicist. He was such a brainiac that when he was on his deathbed they had military guys posted at his bedside lest he mumble top secret info in his delirium. Anyway in better times it was well known he was so busy that he did not spend as much time with his family as he might have. His wife told a story that at one time she was in bed sick, and asked him for a glass of water. After about 5 or 10 minutes he returned. “Where do we keep the glasses?” She said they had lived at that house for 17 years. Posted by: Common Tater at October 19, 2025 05:30 AM (IrAlb) 35

People do t do scooters here.
Instead they love golf carts. Had to wait behind a convoy of three of them yesterday driving through the neighborhood to go to a nearby neighborhood apparently to watch football at somebody’s house because they were loaded with coolers and containers. It’s those bigger golf carts with knobby tires and turn signals for road use. They are all the rage now among people who don’t want to walk through a neighborhood or ride a bike. Yes, AM radio waves have a phenomenon called “atmospheric skip”. FM radio frequencies are much higher and don’t generally exhibit this characteristic at all. They are “line of sight”.
That’s why I wondered about cell phone frequencies. Usually it will become usable around dusk, and then till about 0730 or so. Sometimes able to get through during the day but very briefly. The time frame narrows by spring, only being usable starting very late at night, meaning one has to be a night owl to log on. Posted by: JFK at October 19, 2025 05:50 AM (IrAlb) 52

'I'm 89 and I saw my homeland rebuilt before - but now I don't believe Gaza has a future'
As near as I can tell they’ve never believed Gaza had a future because they’ve spent several decades consumed by the past and the future represented nothing but a chance for revenge. Stop starting wars you can’t win and build a community dedicated to providing a better future for the children and you might get somewhere. As it stands they are nothing but ignoble savages constantly holding pity parties in between military campaigns. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 19, 2025 05:51 AM (6ydKt) 54

Solar radiation interference? I’m sure a bigger nerd than me can explain it better and more accurately. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 19, 2025 *** I understood the night reception phenomenon was because of "skip distance." A layer of the atmosphere, I've forgotten the name, comes down closer to the surface of the Earth at night. So the angle changes at which the radio waves hit it and reflect; it becomes less acute, so the distance between transmitter and receivers can become greater. In '72, I recall listening on an ordinary AM radio at night and picking up stations in Ohio and Kansas City, hearing the Eagles' "Take It Easy" a week before my local Top 40 station began playing it. What I noticed about Young Frankenstein last night, and I've noticed before, is that it is not a rapid-fire joke machine of a movie. The pace is measured; it's not like Airplane! Mel Brooks was clearly trying to replicate the pacing of the 1931-1945 Universal horror films he was doing an affectionate parody of. He had faith that his audience would stick with him for the payoff comic lines and scenes -- as they clearly did.

They’ve done pretty well for themselves as a base for American tech companies who needed access to the EU market. Low corporate tax rates and a drive to improve worked out for them. Now they’re going down the same path as the UK with massive immigration and leftist policies that are slowly strangling everything. They’ll be screwed if the EU keeps trying to manhandle every American company with rules and regulations, because those companies might decide it’s no longer worth it and pull out completely. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. Winnie was wrong on that, I think. Sort of. Well, totally.
Curiously the early 20th century Army technical manuals described Democracy in not very glowing terms. “Results in license, agitation, discontent. Mobocracy. Attitude towards property is communistic”. After the 2nd war to end all wars they described this anodyne bullshit. They would have PSAs on the radio claiming “In a Democracy, a dictator can’t take over. The people won’t allow it”. This a real howler, because democracies are exactly how dictators generally take over, it’s almost axiomatic. Posted by: JFK at October 19, 2025 06:33 AM (IrAlb) 105

In 2015, while I was writing Those Who Remain, the seventh book in The New World series, I found myself delving deeply into generational theory. My research led me to The Strauss-Howe Generational Theory, particularly as outlined in their books Generations and The Fourth Turning. This research inspired me to include the quote, "Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And weak men create hard times." Although this quote simplifies generational theory, it encapsulates the idea that as a society progresses from hardship to prosperity, the generation that has been shielded from struggle—the so-called "weak men"—may become complacent, leading to a return of difficult times. These "weak men" often lose sight of the sacrifices made by their predecessors to create those good times and may even challenge the very norms that brought about the nation's success. The sentiment behind this quote is not new; in fact, it is ancient. Every generation tends to view the succeeding ones as weaker. Posted by: m at October 19, 2025 07:02 AM (RuTUS) 119

Saturday Night Jokes and Other Funnies Four college guys go on a weekend road trip. They are having such a good time that they decide to play hooky and skip out on their Monday exam in psychology. They all send their professor an email saying they had a flat tire while out of town and the professor said no problem, unexpected things happen. They could take it on Tuesday. Celebrating their white lie they had another big night out and headed back on Monday. When they got back on campus Tuesday they went and saw their professor and she asked if they were all right, thanked them for letting her know ahead of time, and told them to get ready for the test. Inwardly laughing they were separated into four separate rooms so as not to cheat. All four flipped over the sheet and saw only two questions: For 5% credit, what does DSM stand for in the DSM-5? For 95% credit, which tire went flat? Posted by: m at October 19, 2025 07:48 AM (RuTUS) 143

I've read about them trolling retirement communities to get warm bodies. The elderly are especially pliable... it's an adventure for them. Drove through a couple of towns yesterday where NK protests were going on. No mass-printed signs -- all scrawled by hand on cardboard. So, points for that.
Definitely an older crowd, though since I'm in a Blue stronghold there were plenty of late-thirties wine aunts. Basically 1/3 Millennial cat ladies, 1/3 old Boomer women, and 1/3 old Boomer men. Didn't see any Antifa blackshirts. As noted, no Pali or Mexican flags. The more legible sign slogans were the same shit they've been saying against Trump since 2015. And since this is one of the bluest states -- what was the point? Liberals showing other liberals that they're liberals? Posted by: Trimegistus at October 19, 2025 08:45 AM (78a2H) 175

220 For countries that have a king they changed the name to “No Tyrants”, which is kind of hilarious. Apparently kings are actually OK. Posted by: Ian S. --------- Hahaha! As they consume the oxygen in the air, the tires lose pressure, and go flat, at which point the swarm migrates to another tire in the dead of night. I finished my Roku menu bar widget for MacOS, now to port it to linux, I used Swift on Mac, going to use Python+GTK, going to have to bring up my python chops.
After that will be an app for the Govee temperature monitors and and any other device in the house that has an exposed API. Basically I've been hunting for inspiration to program something other than the ERP I've been working on. Which has become slightly boring. Bonchie @bonchieredstate 3m “So you’re holding a No Kings rally to try to remove a president who was elected?” “Yes, Dave.” “And you think you are saving democracy by demanding the violation of the democratic process?” “That’s correct, Dave.” Posted by: m at October 19, 2025 08:54 AM (RuTUS) 180

Hundreds gathered outside the US embassy in London and other cities across the world on Saturday as part of the first wave of “No Kings” protests, a global campaign against President Donald Trump’s policies on immigration, education and security. The demonstrations, organisers say, are a stand against what they describe as the president’s “autocratic ambitions.”
