I bought my ultimate stereo while in the Army. It was too loud for apartment living after I got out so I sold it off piece by piece. Wish I hadn't. I still have the rear Bose 101 speakers collecting dust around here somewhere. Now I just use the free bluetooth speaker I got with a phone I upgraded to.

Back when the tornados hit Tulsa in '74, my friend's dad had an electronics store that had its roof ripped open, rooftop AC thrown into a parking lot a block away.
My friend got me in there before the post-tornado sale (a whole story in itself) and pulled out equipment that had been in the one room that wasn't waterlogged. I got a quad amp, and four giant JBL speakers, a Teac 3340 4-channel reel-to-reel, and a nice Sony TV, along with other equipment, at bargain prices. Time has taken all that away from me, but it powered my listening for decades. I still have the Teac and several big reels of tape, somewhere in the catacombs, but haven't tried to use it in… a long, long time. Probably needs maintenance if the tapes even still contain signal. It was impressive to see FZ's catacombs. Vatican-worthy treasures there. Posted by: mindful webworker - backmasked for your convenience at October 18, 2025 07:49 PM (KDyF9) 24
AI Slop is real but who knew that the best things to come from AI would be 50's inspired trailers and Funk and Synthpop Inspirations of classics songs
Here's Tom Sawyer as a funk cover and Smells Like Teen Spirit as an 80's synth pop song. There is still something slightly off to all of these AI songs, but what would be meta is if a real group covered these AI covers. This actually happened with the fake group that was making waves a couple of months ago, somebody actually covered the song and it sounded great, so more of that should happen. https://tinyurl.com/3a72zrbd https://tinyurl.com/3brk7mab Posted by: Thomas Bender at October 18, 2025 07:49 PM (XV/Pl) 25

When Sears was still around, they bought some company called Brand Central which became their de facto electronics department. And, remarkably, you could get a pretty high quality stereo and speaker system at the time for a fraction of the cost of places like Circuit City (remember them?).
It seems like component systems like the one shown above morphed into compact systems which spent more time on a nifty lightshow while playing music than they did on the actual sound. Posted by: Orson at October 18, 2025 07:52 PM (dIske) 30

I remember stereo set ups like that but they were always above my budget. As my hearing decreased a fancy system would have been wasted. Now my hearing aids are wonders but nothing lets me hear music like my old Bose over the ear headset that still has a cord and uses AAA batteries. I've replaced the ear pads twice but the thing keeps working great. Bluetooth has some convenience but having the cord keeps things simpler.

Seeing Christmas decorations at some stores (surprised they didn't start earlier) made me think of carols I especially love. Here are two favorites on YT.
Geoff Castellucci doing Carol of the Bells. It his arrangement which means original and effective. And it showcases his extraordinary voice. He sings all five parts of the harmony. Very unusual arrangement. It's like the Carol of the Bells met Edgar Allen Poe with a touch of Lovecraft. Part of the fun was singing along and realizing I hit a D1. That note from me is soft but recognizable and is about three notes lower than I can often reach. The other is Coventry Carol with Alison Krauss singing and Yo Yo Ma on cello. It's a simple version with a bit of a Celtic feel. It is exquisite and poignant. Posted by: JTB at October 18, 2025 08:23 PM (yTvNw) 66

A long time ago I had a 100w Realistic (Radio Shack) amp with internal cassette deck and a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers. I was rocking away , with the headphones on, to Introduction of the Guests from Tannhauser. Trouble was I didn't flip the switch to headphones. The neighbor was far from being amused.

Oh wow. I had a pioneer turntable with the S arm which I just gave to a friend because my Denon receiver does not have a turntable friendly jack, a technics cassette deck and a JVC CD player. I still have the CD player as we have a very large collection of CDs.
The Denon receiver powers the TV and music system and I have two Audio Technica turntables, the newest is a direct drive bluetooth model which allows me to put it on top of the record cabinet in the family room without having all the other equipment all around it. There is a Gemini equalizer, and we attached a power amp to the system to override the TV sound when we want to have a game on and still listen to music. I had kept all my albums - and have over 150 , with probably another 40 old Christmas albums. The new albums I'm buying (often re-releases of old albums I didn't have) is all much heavier vinyl that what I used to buy, which is another reason it all costs more. I saw one later in life at a farm in NE I was hunting, and one similar on Pawn Stars. I imagine that are in the real big buck range now.

We lived Japan when I was a kid and my dad worked in electronics for the Air Force. He always bought great stereo equipment. We had a nice cabinet setup with a receiver, turntable and reel-to-reel tape recorder. I don't remember the brand. When I went off to college late 70s, he helped me buy a great receiver and turntable. I bought some fantastic KLH speakers with my summer job money and had them blaring out my windows every weekend as we all sat sunning ourselves on the quad below. Over time, I acquired a pretty large album collection. Once cassettes and CDs came on the scene, I bought a 3-component Sony system with a receiver, dual cassette player and a 5-disc CD player. I topped it off with Technics turntable. The speakers lasted almost 20 years (my dad replaced the woofers at least once) before I replaced them with B&W tower speakers, which I still have today. The receiver was literally frozen when it arrived in Minneapolis on a frigid January day, after moving from San Francisco. I replaced it with a Kenwood that I also still have today. Unfortunately, the turntable and all of my album covers were damaged in a flood in my apartment.

Mike Hammer - I understand the hi-fi “bug” a little bit. Agreed, people listen to their stereos and not the music.
I was AMAZED how good early 60s tube gear sounds, thought it not possible. Dynaco had an FM stereo *kit* that was the most amazing thing I ever heard. It had an ingenious method for home alignment, using the stereo tuning eye tube. Ordinarily requires expensive test equipment. 12AX7 Telefunken is a very good audio tube. The Dynaco had very realistic midrange - voices, brass or wind instruments, and violins. Like ear candy. Had a really spooky 3D Imaging effect. My theory is vacuum tube elements are slightly microphonic and adds a leetle bit of reverb into it, to sweeten the sound. Posted by: Common Tater at October 18, 2025 09:12 PM (J48Co) 172

My Bose 501's spent two weeks under water in a flood. When I got to them they where still full. I drilled holes in the side, drained them, threw them in the truck, went home and let them dry out. Only an audiophile would have been able to tell anything had happened to them. Still sounded great right up to when I sold them for as much as I had paid for them. A local band wanted them for stage monitors along with their 901's they were using. Bose wasn't making that version of the 501 anymore and the new version looked little, weird and hokey. They wanted the boxy look so it looked like they had something on stage because you could hardly see the 901's. Awesome sound from a nearly invisible speaker. I alway wanted 901's but it was never in the cards and the 501's were plenty loud enough for me.

Tube amplification is superior for guitar amps, and I don’t think distortion measurement is even a factor. Distortion of a particular type is desirable in guitars, what’s a little more going to matter during playback? It’s a red herring.
Where solid state shines is being able to deliver gobs and gobs of high output inexpensively. And reliability, no question. Output tubes wear out fairly quickly, and the whole thing runs hot and doubles as a space heater. Nobody can make tubes any longer that last. They sound fine, but are prone to going Chernobyl. My current system is mostly home built (based on others' designs; my electronics knowledge is limited). Consists of full-range speakers, power amp, pre amp, phono pre amp, and turntable. Will be adding a cd player soon (inexpensive Sony dvd player will donate its innards) and a DAC (which will be the only 100% non-DIY component).

Two systems, one in BR and one in LR.
LR consists of "dust collector" TV, two Pioneer speakers, one $6 Kintner amp, one Sony DVD player (we treat it real gently, since they don't make them any more, and have another backup). BR consists of one 1981 vintage Denon AM/FM tuner, one $6 Kintner amp, two small Pioneer speakers, and one Magnavox DVD player used only to play CDs. All bought used: tuner in 1992 for $30, speakers ($5) and DVD player ($10) from Goodwill. Also have a vintage VCR in storage. I got a digitizing device on eBay for $24 and transcribed a huge box of VHS tapes. Ditto with all my tape cassettes, music CDs and records. My entire collection is now in mp3 format. I keep one in the car and one backed up in safe deposit box. Posted by: 320H55V I/me/mine at October 19, 2025 06:32 AM (kvDvI) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0506 seconds. |
