American Psycho Author Brett Easton Ellis: Critics Are Overpraising One Battle After Another Out of Ideological Sympathy; the Pro-Antifa Film Will Age Like Milk

One Battle After Another was received ecstatically by left-wing critics. Although it's reportedly a well-directed film, the ecstasy comes from the film "meeting the moment," rallying the left to take violent means to undo the Trump Revolution.

The film is explicitly in favor of left-wing terrorists blowing up and killing "right-wing" cartoon characters. I would say it's explicitly pro-Antifa, but the film is careful to never call the terrorists it glorifies "Antifa." But it's also clear that's who the terrorists are.

It's expected to be nominated, and win, just about every Oscar in every category at this year's Academy Awards. Partly because Hollywood just isn't making many worthy movies any more, partly because they can't stop virtue signalling for every Current Year cause, but mostly because they're left-wing psychopaths with a keen interest in encouraging violence against the right.

And so they'll virtue signal this pro-Antifa-Terrorist movie into a historic sweep of the Oscars.

Christian Toto wants to know if we'll get all the Oscar nominations if we produce a film that explicitly glorifies right-wing violence against left-wing government officials.

Here's a timely thought experiment.
What if director Paul Thomas Anderson dropped a far-Right movie into this year's awards season mix?

He then rewrites the actual One Battle After Another, flipping left to right and right to left, to see how the left might react to a movie celebrating right wing terrorists blowing up left wing government officials.

The project, dubbed "One Battle After Another," features alt-Right radicals battling it out with government officials during a Democrat administration.
The protesters ignite incendiary devices around a center where January 6 defendants are being held in solitary confinement, even those who merely entered the Capitol during the "insurrection." A few milled around outside the building that day, never joining the riot.
Some radicals in the film detonate bombs in government buildings, unsure if any people are still inside. They don't seem to care.
One radical kills a security officer in a heated moment, helping several J6 activists escape in the process. She's a heroic figure, sultry and uncompromising in her beliefs. A triumphant image of her firing a machine gun while very pregnant causes a stir.
Her beta male beau (Leonardo DiCaprio) can only hope to keep up with her revolutionary pluck.
By all accounts, the couple and their colleagues represent the film's complicated but unabashed heroes. If they ever regret their murderous ways, it isn't captured on screen.
Anderson's visceral filmmaking has never been better. Sean Penn delivers a blistering turn as a Democrat-appointed colonel who will stop at nothing to capture DiCaprio's on-screen daughter.
The storytelling is intense. The performances are all above reproach. It's alternately scary, humorous and ripped from today's headlines. Oh, and the film relentlessly paints Democratic officials as racist, hateful and, often, murderous in nature.
Would that film's Rotten Tomatoes score stand at 96 percent "fresh?" What if its release coincided with real-world violence that eerily reflected the film's messaging?
Doubtful, at best.

Critics are fawning over the film, suggesting the Best Picture race unofficially ended with its debut. Trade publications like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are cranking out stories about the movie, pushing its awareness factor as far as it will go.
Variety cries that the film could "rule the cultural conversation," giving the term "wish-casting" an extreme close-up.

American Psycho author Brett Easton Ellis knows something about provocations in art, and says that this dismal movie will win all the awards -- but be forgotten as a "musty" relic of TDS leftism in a couple of years.

"If there was ever a movie to kind of do a deep-dive on, it would be One Battle After Another," the American Psycho and Less Than Zero author said in a recent episode of his podcast. "I just didn't really like it. It has nothing to do with any kind of ideological shit. I know there are a lot of people on the right who hate the movie and I guess that's kind of fair because I think the liberal, the very liberal entertainment press--I'm not painting them black or anything with that, it's just a fact--have severely overrated it."
Ellis went on to argue that the film will one day be considered "a kind of musty relic of the post-Kamala Harris era of, you know, that thing that everyone gathers around and pretends is so fantastic and so great when it really isn't, just to make a point."

"Overall, yeah, there's a liberal mustiness to this movie that already feels very dated by October 2025. Very dated," Ellis said, as heard here. "It just doesn't read the room. It reads a tiny corner of the room but it does not read what is going on in America. It thinks something else is going on."

Though the global haul of $140 million is impressive for a film that's original, R rated and nearly three hours long, "One Battle" requires roughly $300 million to break even. That's because Warner Bros. spent more than $130 million on production and $70 million on promotional efforts, and ticket sales are typically split 50-50 between studios and theater operators. Meanwhile DiCaprio typically gets first-dollar gross on his movies, meaning he gets a percentage of box office revenues before the studio recoups any costs.
"These prestige-type movies have failed to create a sense of FOMO among audiences," says Fandango's box office analyst Shawn Robbins. "They weren't event-ized enough."

It has been "dead" before, but it was actually just mostly dead. The Doctor's adventures continued in books, and sales of DVDs and merch remained brisk even after the original series' cancellation.

Now, this writer pronounces Doctor Who dead-dead and incapable of being revived.

In the opinion of Doctor Who franchise writer Robert Shearman, the season-ending regeneration of the 15th Doctor into actress Billie Piper, who herself previously played fan favorite companion Rose Tyler, has effectively "put a full stop" on the series' long-running narrative.

Because the show was ending and Russell T. Davies wanted to tease some kind of cliffhanger, they filmed a bullshit post-credit ending featuring former companion Billie Piper suddenly becoming the new Doctor. No one believes this is a real casting decision, as Billie Piper hasn't signed on to do a show that no longer exists. And it wouldn't make any sense anyway.

And it's amazing how good it looks. I mean from a production standpoint.

A big, propulsive movie with large action setpieces that cost $20 million in the early 80s, which is comparable to roughly $80 million today.

They shot outside. Real locations. Sets were extended with matte paintings and large backdrops. But the new Indy cost $420 million, and it's all digital throwup in every scene.

Studios just don't know how to make movies anymore. Like...all of their producers are just garbage.

The Oscars haven't been about pure attempts to honor great art...ever.

But they were closest in the first...decade. When Best Picture was Best Production, and it was really about awarding producers who risked big and won big (expensive movies that made a lot of that box office).

That changed when Frank Capra got pissy that Lady for a Day didn't win, so he charged into the Academy, became a governor, and twisted things so that his next film, It Happened One Night (a delightful film I do love) won over Cleopatra, the more "traditional" choice.

The Oscars were able to dance the line between leading taste and following taste for decades after that, but the 90s were the beginning of the end. That's when Weinstein decided to just buy them, and it worked. It became insular at a level the Oscars never were, to the point where they stopped being able to lead because their choices were growing increasingly detached from the culture around them.

Star Trek went to hell after The Next Generation, and The Next Generation was no picnic itself. But after The Next Generation, the bad guys looked like muppets and the cast of mechanical clowns one might find on a ride at Disney World and the crew was a collection of DEI hires and soy-eating beta males. Kirk and Spock could have taken control by combat the bridge of any of those other follow-up shows without losing more than 1 or 2 of the away crew red-shirts in the process (and they were always going to lose 1 or 2 of those every episode regardless).

And at awardsdaily.com, the Hollywood blog run by Sasha Stone that I hang out at, there's been a huge ongoing debate over whether (a) it's going to lose money (b) it will win Best Picture and other awards (c) it will go down ultimately as a classic.

I've explained it before, but I like the theater specifically because I don't have control.

There's no pausing or going back. I'm there. I've invested money and time to get there. I pay attention, or I don't get my money's worth.

I've never had a terrible experience in theaters with other patrons, either. Never perfect, but never obnoxiously awful outside of kids movies (but, you know...it's Minecraft...kids are gonna be rowdy).

I think the Academy will reward this film because it is a cause they want to promote. Like the Nobel Committee, they see power in their award to "raise awareness" and sway public opinion, and they want to use that power directly.

144 Jordan Peele's first flick, Get Out, was IMHO brilliant, and actually had a somewhat fresh take on the old-as-dirt debate on American racism.

Also IMHO, it was brilliant for him to make the villains, Obama voters. It helped show that it wasn't meant as a political cudgel, that Peele was truly trying to bring truth to the screen.

Was it 'woke'? Somewhat. But also, Peele didn't let it get in the way of the story. It was still entertaining, funny and creepy.

It's been disappointing that Peele has been so, un, unappealing since. He could have been a voice that brought people together.

I have a video of a junior high school project for my sons and one is in one of my dresses and hats. Hilarious. My brothers and cousins also used to dress up this way at my grandmothers...but for laughs only.

No one went to school, for example,in a dress. No one told their mother they wanted to be a girl and were depressed over it. And if they had their mothers would simply tell them no, get over it, you are a boy.

As the mother of three sons I never hoped for a girl after the first boy (and we wanted a boy). I hoped for a healthy baby and got them. I never wanted a son to feel slighted because he was "not what I wanted."

I did not have another girl in the family until my granddaughters and they were worth the wait in my all male world.

Oh hey. I always wanted your opinion on Craig Zobel's "The Hunt". I recall that prior to the release it was being billed as wonderful Liberals winning out over decrepit Conservatives. There was a lot of buzz in Hollywood. But, then, the movie came out and it makes Liberals look like (well, what they are)...and while it isn't exactly complimentary to the right, the protagonist ends up being ex-military, right leaning and a relatively "good person" smarter than the rest. She wasn't even the one that was supposed to be there. They got the names messed up.

I just am curious what the "inside baseball" would be on that film. I'll bet Zobel misrepresented the story to the studio, and by the time they realized, it was ready to release. I'll have to look and see if the blackballed Zobel. I don't know if he's worked on anything since.

But...it feels edgelordy instead of anti-conservative on any level, so I assume it got greenlit with a pitch along the lines of "We'll offend everyone!", ground shifted under the feet of the studio, and they tried to sell it as, "Conservatives are icky because the industry hates them all now."

We've been told that the monster threat isn't real. But then Shyamalan has to have his cake and eat it too by trying to do the monsters anyway even though the actual secret, the final reveal, is actually more terrifying than the idea of the monsters.

So, just let the audience know its Adrien Brody in the costume, but you get to keep the creepy visual of the costume as he haunts Bryce Dallas Howard, instead of trying to trick the audience into thinking that the monsters are real...which he just told us they're not.

188 I caught One Battle simply because it was a Paul Thomas Anderson film. Like all is work, it's well acted, well-directed, well crafted and it's remarkably engaging. As for the story itself, it's a disjointed cocked up mess. The early terrorist protagonist disappearing into the world and living more or less normal lives for decades is complete poppycock. In reality to avoid arrest they would have been buried so far underground they barely would be living. But as a piece of propaganda it works pretty well, especially if you like singing folk songs and ate prone to pissing in your adult diapers. This movie struck me as his terrorist nostalgia piece much like Licorice Pizza was his coming of age piece. This isn't going to age like milk, it's going to age like a turd on a sidewalk. It's already become dated and irrelevant in my mind.

I don't watch television or streaming, either...even for shows I would otherwise enjoy and occasionally watch clips on YouTube. It's not even a protest, it's either apathy and lack of quality too many times in a row (Hollywood) or too much of a pain in the ass to pay and get access to the proper streaming service to maybe watch a show I'm interested in (television).

The only movie I can think of I'd like to see, if it comes out, would be the sequel to Battle Angel Alita. First one ended unresolved, story and action were good...but it probably won't be made. The lead actress was kinda weird/cute, too. I'll even look past her personal far Left nonsense!

The only movie of Shyamalan's like that is The Sixth Sense.

Everyone expected him to have twists after that, and he kind of doesn't.

But his "twists" actually appear early in most everything, good or bad, like the multiple personalities in Split or the reality of the magical creature in Lady in the Water. And they're really just setups.

The stuff coming out her now is just a tiny speck of her questionable behavior over the last decade. You can pull some old articles up on her from when she was a not a national persona, and the press is much less protective. She used to go to Anger Managment sessions back as far as 2009. And, the divorce was typical California. There was a whole laundry list of things (some violent) that she did. While her only accusation of the hubby was he once threw a newspaper at her. The only movie of Shyamalan's like that is The Sixth Sense.

Everyone expected him to have twists after that, and he kind of doesn't.

Unbreakable has one final thing, essentially just a coda, about Mr. Glass being evil. The Village has the rope a dope about the monsters being real.

But his "twists" actually appear early in most everything, good or bad, like the multiple personalities in Split or the reality of the magical creature in Lady in the Water. And they're really just setups.

My gen alpha step kid is based and his schoolmates and he use crazy non PC language. It's really hard to find the balance between encouraging him not to be a woke sheep, and knowing if he goes too far he could get canceled and punished for his speech.

Unbreakable is a deconstruction.

It's my favorite Shyamalan movie. Yes, it does void the "big fight", but at the same time it's like a yellow narrator's box which tells you Isaac is going to the Home for the Criminally Insane, just like in comic books.

Shyamalan plays with narrative levels throughout that movie.

I liked "Signs" too, with one exception. They just give you a brief glimpse at the aliens. I remember an interview done with Spielberg years ago where he said that one of his complaints of films (that he hopes he never commits) is when there is a build up of suspense, but little to no payoff. You need to, eventually, show the aliens. Show the shark. Show the antagonist. Not just a glimpse, but right out in front.

Signs didn't do that. They just showed a glimpse in news footage.

327 My biggest problem with one battle after another is I thought from the trailer it would be about Leo's character having to atone for his past sins as a weather underground type terrorist. Like Sneakers or something. And instead it's all he's a drugged out loser and there's a plot about who's the real baby daddy of his kid, him or a wannabe white supremacist. What? Lame.

Oh and the daughter joins antifa at the end? So we don't learn that weatherman style Terrorism is evil, and he and his daughter should move past it and have a normal life?

Eff that noise. Pass. I might be wrong-ish on the actual plot, though I read the Movie Spoiler summary. But anything at all justifying the weather underground and their bombings in any way is pure evil.
