One of our local universities is having a hunger strike today. Why? because they want peace in the middle east and the Palestinians to get it all. I'm sure most of the student body could care less, and pizza for all behind closed dorm doors and fewer eating in the cafeteria. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 15, 2025 05:37 AM (lQ+/f) AI is really good in expert systems. Analyzing specific things with known and agreed upon rules quickly to free humans to focus on the instances where things are marginal and need an actual brain. Trouble is that expert systems are harder to use to control the masses so we get "general AI" instead which, while artificial, isn't intelligent and will only be used for nefarious purposes. This woman - https://tinyurl.com/4bj4saxv+ - makes a lot of videos about the issues with AI. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at October 15, 2025 05:43 AM (ExV1e) 42
Trump is playing a dangerous game with gangsters like Hamas They may humiliate him. Posted by: San Franpsycho
I've been thinking along the same lines. Hamas is not going to roll over as evidenced by them executing other Palestinians and then of violating the agreements by not turning over all the bodies they murdered. There's one way to deal with Hamas and that is to chase them back into their tunnels and then flood them with seawater. It seems a matter of time before Hamas performs another atrocity which requires a boots on the ground response. At that point, yeah... I only keep Windows around to play certain Steam games.
I haven't been playing those recently, so that need is dropping a lot. Especially since one of the game designers whose games I mostly liked turned out to be a massive anti-Trump dickhead. (TBH, the developer was a bit of an opinionated dickhead to begin with; since the only opinionated dickheaded bits that I knew about were on game design, I didn't care for a while. He fucked up by melding his "here's my developer twitter/X feed" with his "here's my twitter/X feed on non-game related things" together. Once I found out his idiotic opinions on Trump, I uninstalled his games from Steam. Joke's on me, of course; he already got paid.) Posted by: Richard Cranium at October 15, 2025 05:46 AM (e2iJO) 47

Today I have to ship two of my vintage hats out to the eBayer who purchased them. Ain't easy to wrap an octagonal hat box, lemme tell ya.
Then I'll order that Canon laser printer/scanner/copier on Amazon I want. The Brother unit I've had for some years has a paper jam I can't find, is asking for toner, and in any case I *need* a scanner/copier. For years I had that function on my printers at work and took them for granted. Yesterday I had to go to a local library to print the labels for the hat packages. Annoying. I have a weird hunch that Hamas isn't long for this world. They want to cling to what power they have, but the underpinnings of that power are gone. US/UN money, Iranian money, Arab money, is all going away. They'll be so busy fighting off local competitors they won't have time to screw with anyone else. And if they do, at least within the next three years, they know they're not going to tip-toe through the atrocities like they always used to, they'll instead finally get a great big dose of Hebrew American FO on their foreheads, because this wasn't some geopoliticking move, this was the final ultimatum. A big smoking hole in Iran says so.

Fen, I spoke with the young lady after the talk. (It was billed as an "Arsenic and Old Lace Tea Party," and featured actual tea, little sandwiches, and cookies!) I mentioned the use of tetraethyl lead (the lead compound that used to be in gasoline) as a poison in Ellery Queen's Roman Hat Mystery, and the dramatic monologue in Robert Browning's poem "The Laboratory." She hadn't heard of either, though she knew Browning and his "My Last Duchess," and seemed interested in looking both up.

Posted by: I am the Shadout Mapes, the Housekeeper at October 15, 2025 *** Nope! She mentioned that "bitter almonds" detail, and pointed out that the ones we consume are called "sweet" almonds, a different species. And that not everybody can detect the smell of bitter almonds. I'm not that swift sometimes. I reread Browning's "The Laboratory" out loud to Linda after we got home. And I suddenly realized that the speaker in the dramatic monologue is a woman. For some reason I'd always thought it was a cuckolded husband who was having the poison made to slip to his cheating wife -- but it's a woman aiming to murder her rivals: "Now, take all my jewels, gorge gold to your fill, "You may kiss me, old man, on my mouth if you will!" The Epson ecco-tank printers are quite nice - they even do a decent job on color pictures. HOWEVER. When you do a refill on the tanks do not attempt to save however much is left in the bottles after the refill and use it to top off the tanks at a later date. The ink from an opened bottle will clog the printer. Only use sealed bottles to fill the tanks.

In the last month in two surrounding counties the same thing has been going on. There is a lot of opposition. One county shot it down, the other county's commissioners approved one. People are pissed and do not want data centers near their homes. Concerns about the noise, traffic, esthetics, and power prices are the main issues. I can understand the opposition. We bought property way out away from anything else for the solitude and if some 600 acre data center were to be built next door I would be pissed too.

It doesn't really bother me. It's not like making up facts about how to build a bridge or do a heart surgery. AI making up case law altogether is not appreciably different from how human lawyers arbitrarily and capriciously "interpret" "real" "laws."
That business has been nothing but bullshit and lies for a long time. Why not automate them? Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 15, 2025 07:16 AM (BI5O2) 101

There was a zoning commission meeting that saw about 550 local residents show up to voice their displeasure.
Sure sign that you have a depraved population when the welfare is so good and abundant that people will get off their fat drunk lazy asses together to bitch and complain about any form of prosperity coming into the area. Its like they don't want anything but worthless gaggle toothed hill scoggin as neighbors and hate the idea that anyone might come in and improve things in any possible way. --------- The county in question here has issue supplying the customers it currently supports with water and electricity. So much in fact, there was debate on whether a data center was even feasible. I'd wager it was, at the expense of rural utility customers. Who showed remarkable persistence. Posted by: Martini Farmer at October 15, 2025 07:19 AM (Q4IgG) 105
Good morning from Amarillo. Posted by: Blake - semi lurker at large Daughter, her two cats and I overnighted there in March 2013 during our epic journey from Oakland, CA to Wilmington, DE. I had selected I-40 as our route east so as to avoid possible spring snows on more northerly routes. We were towing a U-Haul trailer behind her Ford Ranger pickup and were no packing snow chains. There was no way that I wanted to have to deal with potential heavy snowfalls under those circumstances. People are pissed and do not want data centers near their homes.
We're still fighting things over here. Some company came in with the idea of setting up power lines for a place in Virginia. I live in Maryland. They actually tried claiming the local government had signed off on it. The community meeting was so packed that I actually couldn't stay there. People were furious and making it known. Oddly, I agree. When the current crop of lawyers mangle laws and contort previous case law into something totally grotesque and obscene it creates precedent. When made-up fairy-tale bogus cases surface coming to the same result, at least its possible to discard the filings and disbar the idiot lawyer who is likely very lazy and corrupt. If you're going to import a bunch of Indian and Chinese indentures to operate a data center that won't employ a single local resident, and it will run up the costs of their electricity and water to the moon, you might expect they won't see it as "improving things" for "scoggins" like them, lol.

Folks who want to own a data center should be required to build them alongside a source of cooling water, and within five miles of a nuclear power plant, built for that purpose.

Not for the rest of us. Because these back-water shit hole counties where these imbred moonshiners are busy buggering the neighbor's livestock will be passed over for money to fix roads and keep the lights on. Having a data center on the other-side of the hill brings reliable electricity, infrastructure and modern fire fighting because the owners of an AI warehouse care about their property and their neighborhood. The data center operators are the first pigs at the trough, but at least they pay their way. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 15, 2025 07:27 AM (a4flb) 121

Help me understand. The citation implies that the reasoning in the cited material is instrumental to the argument. If the source of the citation is bogus, isn't also the argument? Flooding issues, close to water might also be within 500 year flood plain. Ain't gonna get insurance or financing for that. What's wrong with building new powerlines onto a grid that is already outdated and strained? Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 15, 2025 07:33 AM (a4flb) 128

I understand that. Poverty and third world infrastructure is desirable in depraved societies that value welfare and sloth over generating wealth. If people like living in that kind of atmosphere, the third world awaits their relocation. Its kind of interesting going back in time before America was awash in money and wealth that communities would fight and cheat to get the railway or US highways to come through their area. But I’m sure for a lot of the arguments there’s a cite somewhere for a case. If there isn’t then you have no argument. This would mean looking it up and finding a cite yourself but the AI can write out the rest, which is all this is really about; lawyers trying to get out of writing the same crap in a brief over and over. Rocket Lawyer and other sites can just about do everything for you now. I had to use it to write a Will for my Dad. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 15, 2025 07:40 AM (6ydKt) 133

I think it is a necessary step to full automation and dark factories. This generation and those that are to follow, at least in the West, are profoundly lazy and unreliable. You can't feed a welfare state off the backs of 300# young adults who are addicted to pr0n, cheezeballs and psychotropics. Japan has figured it out that the young people aren't going to support the generations that busted their asses to provide a world for them to prosper, so they went crazy on robotics. At the very least, it fronts the money to build modular reactors that are necessary to power a post-modern society. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 15, 2025 07:41 AM (a4flb) 134

There are over 2 million robots doing work in robot only factories with a skeleton crew of people making sure everything is running. Read an article about that the other day.
