7 Good morning,

I’m contemplating a network upgrade and redo in conjunction with the imminent Starlink installation. We are in a rural area. Does anyone have experience with a music server or NAS setup?

I’d appreciate some tips, particularly on hardware and operating systems.

8 Woo hoo ! I'll take it!

Greetings from your man in Singapore, lots of respect for President Trump right now in this corner of the world, even if some of it is begrudging. I am amazed that this also includes my smarmy Brit friends, who have had to give credit where it's due.

It may not last - and/or it's a bit of a mirage, but this is the first time I have felt that there's a shot. And Trump got there by supporting Israel and isolating the Palestinians/Hamas (and Iran) from the rest of the Arab world. I am also getting the sense that the termination of some of the Hamas leadership in Qatar by Israel was tacitly allowed/staged by Qatar and the US (who then said to Israel "stop" and they did). This sent the not so subtle message that, even though they were in Qatar, they could be reached by, and would not be protected from, Israel and the US. The thought of that and the knowledge that the $ was about to dry up or become a trickle - particularly with Trump shutting off the US AID spigot to all the world's commie terrorist organizations, signaled that the party was over for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Anyway - off to read the Pixy content - will comment on that later.

13 OK - on that OFCAO BS, and any BS EU regulator stating that they have the authority to regulate US companies (which 4-Chan is, btw, domiciled in Delaware) just because the site is accessible to people in the UK/EU can, if you will forgive my French, "blow me."

This was what annoyed me about the GDPR - it literally suggests that because you have site accessible by even a single person form the EU and/or they buy something from it, you have to obey all their regulations and are subject to jurisdiction/fine & penalty. And, at the time, all the US companies' legal folks just rolled over and agreed and implemented GDPR controls. I would have literally flipped them the bird. Um. No. your citizen came to my site to buy, even if virtually, so the transaction occurs here in the US - so it is subject to US regulation . . . and the EU/UK can f*ck right the f*ck off. Glad to see 4Chan doing this, finally

18 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 51 chilly degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with rain predicted for the entire day. Wish I could stay in bed (I had a very unhappy weekend), but must work; probably about 2-plus hours' worth ahead.

I'm sorry I missed the Sunday ONT - I'm not a huge fan of bustles, since I think the period 1890 - 1910 was the apex of women's fashion, but a few of those dresses Piper showed were just the sort of thing I would love to have a woman of my own wear (I was born too late for either cosplay or steampunk).

Anyway, I'd better get to work. The sooner I start, the sooner 12 o'clock will come and the sooner I can go back to bed.

20 @13/Publius Redux: Trump should apply a little "Reductio ad absurdum" here, and sign an EO stating that if any website outside the USA hosts American users, that the USA's laws and Constitution then apply to the company running that website. Therefore, everyone at that company now has the rights to freedom of speech and to bear arms.

Watching so many heads explode from that move would be great.

One that has been around forever is a electric motor with scuffed up brushes and commutator mounted in the bottom of a coffee can. The sparking motor will generate broadband noise that can jam a radio, but I don't know about a traffic light. I'd be willing to give it a try though.

Lousy (what's new?). Had a bad weekend and came this close to trashing my entire novel in a fit of depressive rage. I really need to get away.

Sleep at night continues to irritate me - it takes me 3-4 hours to finally drop off (I'ver been that way all my life), and then when I finally do manage to get some dreamtime, I have to be up in an hour.

I'm going up to Ogunquit, Maine this week to see a couple of performances of Titanic, the musical, which I love. It would be nice if I came back rested and relaxed, but I doubt it. Still, it will be nice to get away from everyone for a few days.

90 "I’m contemplating a network upgrade and redo in conjunction with the imminent Starlink installation. We are in a rural area. Does anyone have experience with a music server or NAS setup?"

I do, but I'm a tech weasel who likes using Slackware linux for my networking needs who also was a signal officer and telecom software engineer.

IOW, I'm willing and interested enough to go into the weeds for my home networking needs. It's absolutely sane to not want to do that.

In my experience, Starlink has been GREAT unless there is a thunderstorm over the house. (The rain interferes with the sat comms.) Starlink provides IPV6 addresses, which you will need to use if you run an internal server that you'd like to access from the outside world. (I run my own local email server that is available on our phones when we aren't at the house.)

If you don't care to provide external access to your internal network, Starlink will be a drop-in replacement to your current internet needs.

You may want to check out the Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@HardwareHaven

He provides some guidance on what you can do with trailing-edge hardware including running a NAS and media server.

91 Might have worked

Posted by: Skip at October 14, 2025 06:49 AM (xatjc)

92 This is how the white traffic light would work:

Several autonomous cars get closer to an intersection.
These cars send data to the traffic light about its speed, position, and direction.
The traffic light detects there are enough smart vehicles to manage the traffic.
The white light turns on, warning that cars are controlling the intersection.
Human drivers only have to follow the traffic flow led by autonomous cars.

What would be really useful is if they would put these on roundabouts.

94 Sleep at night continues to irritate me - it takes me 3-4 hours to finally drop off (I'ver been that way all my life), and then when I finally do manage to get some dreamtime, I have to be up in an hour.

I'm going up to Ogunquit, Maine this week to see a couple of performances of Titanic, the musical, which I love. It would be nice if I came back rested and relaxed, but I doubt it. Still, it will be nice to get away from everyone for a few days.

A server is just a computer that has been configured to provide a service. My hardware is an old Intel computer with a 5 bay sata hot swap bay in it. I'm running Debian GNU/Linux with the drives in a dual-redundant RAID6 array that I am allocating using dynamic volume management. On top of that, I have installed Jellyfin. I wouldn't recommend the hardware or the OS unless you're an enthusiast, but Jellyfin is a full of win.
