Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 15, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb debris. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Best wishes to those in transit to the TX MoMe X. The concentration of Morons in one place will likely cause the earth to wobble on its axis. Prepare accordingly. Special thanks to all who labor to make it happen. [Top photo: Cackle Hatchery, Lebanon, Missouri]![]() It was down to the final 30 seconds at the Microsoft Excel World Championships in Las Vegas, and the crowd was going wild. Canada's Michael Jarman was in the lead, his eyes fixed on the scoreboard, desperately hoping nobody would come up from behind and snatch victory from his grasp. When the clock ran out, Jarman leapt from his computer and threw his hands up in celebration, as the spectators in the HyperX Arena erupted in cheers. This year's final battle involved using Excel to track stats in a simulated game of World of Warcraft (WoW), a long-running and wildly popular online video game featuring fantastical creatures like dragons, elves and orcs. "I mean, I'm not a WoW player myself, but it was pretty cool," Jarman said. "We were given an eight-page instruction manual before going on stage to read, so we had some idea of what was going on." To add a competitive edge the player with the lowest score is eliminated every five minutes, alluded to in the chorus of the event's epic rock theme song: "It's the Excel World Championship / Who's going to win? / It's the Excel World Championship / Who's going in the spreadsheet bin?" LinkWe live in strange times. ![]() ![]() Using 11 years of magnetic field measurements from the European Space Agency's Swarm satellite constellation, scientists have discovered that the weak region in Earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic - known as the South Atlantic Anomaly - has expanded by an area nearly half the size of continental Europe since 2014. However, since Swarm has been in orbit the magnetic field over Siberia has strengthened while it has weakened over Canada. The Canadian strong field region has shrunk by 0.65% of Earth's surface area, which is almost the size of India, while the Siberian region has grown by 0.42% of Earth's surface area, which is comparable to the size of Greenland. This shift, which is caused by complex processes going on in Earth's turbulent core, is associated with the northern magnetic pole moving towards Siberia in recent years. This shift is important for navigation, which is affected by the dance between these two areas of strong magnetic field. In 2030, the International Space Station will be deorbited: driven into a remote area of the Pacific Ocean.Sounds like Point Nemo is about to get a new resident. ![]() People who live in Canonsburg woke up on Monday surrounded by an unusual flock of rubber ducks. The Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church shared photos of the rubber ducks on their Facebook page, saying it was a fun start to the week and they were delightfully surprised to see the ducks show up in the town. Canonsburg Borough Manager Angela Senay said the ducks suddenly showed up and brought smiles, laughter, and silliness to the community. "While we can't say for sure who started this "fowl play," we can say it's a feather-ruffling reminder that joy can come in the smallest (and squeakiest) of packages," Senay said. ![]() Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop, the Canonsburg-based candy store responsible for placing thousands of rubber ducks around Canonsburg, has shared a behind-the-scenes video showing how workers pulled off the viral campaign. "Canonsburg got completely... ducked!" the shop wrote via social media. The video shows workers secretly placing these ducks around town during the early morning hours. Ducks appeared on benches, storefront displays, and even pedestrian push buttons. That mystery began with about 2,000 small ducks on Sept. 29. A few days later, 2,000 medium ducks appeared. Then, 600 larger ducks soon followed. It all culminated last week with nearly a dozen 14-foot-tall ducks on rooftops throughout Canonsburg. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Wednesday ONT acknowledges the heroic and historic efforts of President Biden and his team who built the framework for this ONT during his administration. TRex appreciates the opportunity to come in at the last minute and get it across the finish line. Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Reports of lost large scale dinos looking for homes are also welcome. Are you lurking ?? Thank you for your attention to this matter. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Re the police scanner, NYPD Blue used to do some (often very dark) funny bits on what day-to-day police work is really like. I especially remember an episode with an elder abuse suspect who was absolutely obsessed with Coca-Cola. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 15, 2025 10:09 PM (8z6SV) 28

One day, one of the neighborhood dogs got ahold of her and ripped a six inch gash across her back. Mom, being Mom, stitched her up but the wound became infected and infested with maggots. We scoured the hood for sleeping pills and the like to put her down. She slept for three days or so, maggots ate all the dead tissue and left, and then she woke up and shook it off. MS has made ways to extend Win10 for exactly one year if you want to do it. 1) Pay them $30 2) Redeem 1000 Microsoft points 3) Login into a Microsoft account and use Windows Backup for your files and it's completely free. You may be right, that was back when the airport was right along I-35 near where the freeway went double-deck. Many of those voting for Peak Austin were probably not alive in the 80s. Sixth Street in the 80s was wild. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 15, 2025 10:56 PM (a4flb) 152

I just checked my Windows Rewards.
I've got a whole 35 points. I guess because I refuse to use OneDrive. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 15, 2025 10:51 PM (6ydKt) They'd like you to earn points by making purchases in the Windows store, or playing Xbox. That rewards page has a bunch of links that refresh at least weekly that basically you click and enter a search term, or the search is automatic, and three similar links that refresh daily. I seem to be picking up ~100 a day in a minute or two (more if there's some kind of brainteaser). If you get enough, you can turn them into Xbox $ and therefore Xbox games (which can largely be played on PC). Posted by: Methos at October 15, 2025 10:59 PM (vSvIl) 161

I was just looking at the latest IERS data (earth rotation reference system). The Erf keeps stubbornly spinning faster than predicted. About two weeks ago, the peak in DUTI (difference between UT1 and UTC) was supposed to be today, Oct. 16Z, but now it's pushed out to about Nov. 1. The error in prediction vs what actually happens is pretty large relatively speaking. Nothing crazy, but just larger than expected. So that's another data point that something unknown is going on. Think of this way, the earth's rotation has a predictable, seasonal component, and an unpredictable, random component. That random component has been giving them fits of late. Again, 99% chance nothing to worry about. But this is very interesting. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 15, 2025 11:18 PM (w6EFb) 193

I've been following that, but wouldn't really admit it. :-) Everything about known physics says that is crazy, a mushy fluid body should be settled around it's maximum axis of inertia, and something like is un-possible. However..... magnetic coupling locks in the current state, which is stable, until it isn't. Magnetic lock in the core breaks, and then it's not stable, and the mantle and crust flip around briefly, then returns to the stable magnetic locked state. Or something, if I've got it close to right. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 15, 2025 11:36 PM (w6EFb) 217

We were doing so well in the first two days and today was almost completely wasted. Both of you had the counts wrong for the number of words in titles. Chat added the numbers correctly at least. Grok's adding was incorrect. Meanwhile Chat's Table display is all screwed up. Not to be mean but AI is supposed to be taking over the world and I can't even get you both to count the number of words in a title correctly. We're going to start playing hardball. We need to 'debug' you and find out where these errors are happening at for each of you. First step. Why can't you count the correct number of words in a title? Plus, no Registry so I wasn't afraid to go behind the scenes to tweak settings. Win XP Pro was "robust" as they say, installed per my brother, an ex-Navy computer whiz who then worked at DSC Columbus (OH) for 24 years and knew a lot. He forbade me from even looking "behind the curtain". Been using W10 now for some years and I don't like it, nor its integral apps. Too much white space on the page, which no doubt suits the kids and idiots who have never read a real book and are afraid of a page with info wall to wall. Northwest Passage:
Around six weeks after running aground in Canada’s Arctic waters Dutch cargo vessel Thamesborg and its icebreaker and tug escorts have left the waters of the Northwest Passage. The convoy is traveling southward in Baffin Bay towards the Davis Strait and will leave Arctic waters in the next few days. The Thamesborg was refloated last Thursday after reloading 5,000 tons of cargo ... Rather than traveling through Barrow Strait to the west of Baffin Island the convoy passed through the rarely-used Bellot Strait, likely to avoid early ice buildup further north. Bellot Strait is a narrow 13.5 nautical mile long channel connecting the Gulf of Boothia and Brentford Bay in the Canadian Arctic. The strait is just 1.1 nm miles wide with steep walls rising up to 2,500 feet on either side. https://tinyurl.com/3b3nwc58 alternate route: https://tinyurl.com/4jjtsn2b Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 16, 2025 12:05 AM (wE4lY) 261

Slowing down is key! Helps to have winter tires, with or without studs, and AWD/4WD. Heck, even front-wheel drive is better than rear-wheel drive, IMO. Can't go zipping around when roads are slick, that's suicidal. Posted by: JQ ============= I was in Lancaster, PA one winter and I'd have gone slow but kee-rist, there I was in a shopping area one icy day and all the other cars were flying along like they were in a rush! Cars just like mine (no chains, no 4WD) and I could barely make a right turn without donuting out into the middle of traffic. I truly didn't see how those other cars kept to the road. Distinguished" US Government Employee With Access To Nuclear Secrets Busted In 'Robot Porn' Scheme
a Department of Energy (DOE) employee with access to nuclear secrets has lost his security clearance after admitting to uploading a staggering 187,000 pornographic images to the agency's network, according to 404 Media. ... According to a filing, "The Individual was using his personal cellphone to view the generative images, but he wanted to view larger images, so he viewed the images using his government-issued computer," adding "He also reported that, since the 1990s, he had maintained a “giant compressed file with several directories of pornographic images,” which he moved to his personal cloud storage drive so he could use them to make generative images." So this guy not only had a massive porn collection he'd been accumulating since the 1990s, he wanted to feed them into an AI to make more. Wow.... Calif mail in ballots... there is a hole next to the place you sign on the outside of the envelope, that just happens to line up with the NO on Prop 50....
So if you fold it like they tell you, and vote no, anyone who handles that envelope can tell if its a no vote on 50... and then handle it differently. Yes, you can fold it the other way... but if HALF of the people don't know about this, it could be enough to change the election outcome. Posted by: Romeo13 at October 16, 2025 01:26 AM (mP0Kj) 319

I'm still up actively working on my project with BOTH ChatGPT and Grok.
I actually have them cooperating on finding solutions to our problems. It's actually pretty interesting. I'll present one's idea to the other. That generates other ideas. I bring it back to the first one and they get ideas. And with the back and forth, their blind spots dissolve and problems get fixed. Let's keep that amongst us humans. Reading some more about that magnetic anomaly. Back in 2007, there was a gravitational anomaly off the west coast of Africa, and it was accompanied by a "magnetic jerk". IOW, satellites detected a wig-woggle of the earth's gravitation field (very tiny, but measurable) over that region, along with similar wig-woggling of the magnetic field. This was attributed to mass redistributions afoot in the lower mantle. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 16, 2025 01:52 AM (w6EFb) 347
