It was down to the final 30 seconds at the Microsoft Excel World Championships in Las Vegas, and the crowd was going wild. Using 11 years of magnetic field measurements from the European Space Agency's Swarm satellite constellation, scientists have discovered that the weak region in Earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic - known as the South Atlantic Anomaly - has expanded by an area nearly half the size of continental Europe since 2014.
However, since Swarm has been in orbit the magnetic field over Siberia has strengthened while it has weakened over Canada. People who live in Canonsburg woke up on Monday surrounded by an unusual flock of rubber ducks. The Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church shared photos of the rubber ducks on their Facebook page, saying it was a fun start to the week and they were delightfully surprised to see the ducks show up in the town. Canonsburg Borough Manager Angela Senay said the ducks suddenly showed up and brought smiles, laughter, and silliness to the community. "While we can't say for sure who started this "fowl play," we can say it's a feather-ruffling reminder that joy can come in the smallest (and squeakiest) of packages," Senay said.
Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop, the Canonsburg-based candy store responsible for placing thousands of rubber ducks around Canonsburg, has shared a behind-the-scenes video showing how workers pulled off the viral campaign. "Canonsburg got completely... ducked!" the shop wrote via social media. The video shows workers secretly placing these ducks around town during the early morning hours. Ducks appeared on benches, storefront displays, and even pedestrian push buttons. That mystery began with about 2,000 small ducks on Sept. 29. A few days later, 2,000 medium ducks appeared. Then, 600 larger ducks soon followed. It all culminated last week with nearly a dozen 14-foot-tall ducks on rooftops throughout Canonsburg.

They sent two extra, but two died within a day ... so it was perfect. I have no chickens now, a predator loved killing them after chewing through my chicken wire and murdering them in the coop one by on. Hardware Cloth (stronger wire, smaller gaps) is the way to go, next time.

Should I bite the bullet and go to 11 with that advice, or switch to Linux? Does Linux have features that allow it to stay compatible with Windows programs? Apologies as I think most of this has already been explained to me.

If it's new enough, try Win11, it's a free upgrade, and if you don't like it, then try Linux.

Just go to Settings, Update and Security, then there should be an option there which tells you your options.
And, for the record, Microsoft's antivirus will still be updating even if you don't sign up.

Probably not. But then again, there's a small chance something crazy could happen. But most likely not.
This is probably related to the earth's little rotation speed up since 2020. There are processes going on with the Erf's core that are not understood at all.

That being said, if I had something that absolutely required Windows and Windows only I'd either chuck it or install a Windows VM inside my Linux box.
Of course, I haven't owned a dedicated Windows box since 1995 so what do I know?

555 was never used, I'm not sure of the reason, but it was default for using a number in a script so random people wouldn't get calls at 3a.m. from bored teenagers.

Ney, ney!! I'll have you know I had a pet duck as a yute that I dearly loved. "Quack quack" by name. One day, one of the neighborhood dogs got ahold of her and ripped a six inch gash across her back. Mom, being Mom, stitched her up but the wound became infected and infested with maggots. We scoured the hood for sleeping pills and the like to put her down. She slept for three days or so, maggots ate all the dead tissue and left, and then she woke up and shook it off. Lived on a further three years.

Win11 requires a new enough CPU with a TPM (security) module.
If it's bugging you to upgrade it is probably compatible, but it'll tell you really quick if it isn't.
MS has made ways to extend Win10 for exactly one year if you want to do it. 1) Pay them $30 2) Redeem 1000 Microsoft points 3) Login into a Microsoft account and use Windows Backup for your files and it's completely free.
And if you if you go with the year extension you can no longer use a local account and have to login through a Microsoft Account.

That's asteroid 2024 Y4. The earth impact probability went way down, but Moon impact went up to that 4% figure. In 2028, they'll be able to pin it down much better when it makes another close pass.

I got Apache Open Office 4 for my new box. It is share ware and is an awful lot like Lotus 123. It does almost nothing for me automatically and that is what I like. Spreadsheet, Database, Drawing and Text which are almost completely un-readable by any MS product so you have to make PDF to send it to other people.

If you are looking to be near Austin, that’s the right area to look. That part of the I-35 corridor can be crowded and leftist, however, because of that. And also because of that, housing prices are through the roof. And thus also property taxes. What made you look at that area?

Most of my life has been lived in that general area. As I'm sure you know, San Antonio has a lot of military presence of it's important to you to be close to VA and/or healthcare. If I were retired and didn't specifically need to be close to SA or Austin, I would consider further west, towards Fredricksburg or Kerrville. FWIW, I think Peak Austin was 2003-2008†. The whole area has been paved over since then and all of the charm is now gone.

No worries... been retired for... damn... 4 years now from doing IT support, but had a couple old clients (local folks I've known for years) call me in a tizzy... their current IT support company was basically telling them they had to buy all new computers RIGHT NOW!!!!
For commercial folks (10 Pro in Domains) they are gouging everyone $61 per machine, first year... cost going up from there.
Really... this is a money grab... I'm sure the US gov is paying them Yuge dollars.

There has been some confusion on that last point. It's apparently backing up Windows "settings", not storing your files on OneDrive. I wouldn't have voluntarily done either at this point, and was planning on using rewards points (which are very easy to accumulate, just put "rewards" in your windows search bar), but when I went to activate it, it said that I had already backed up my settings.

I’m happy with OO. It’s work that forces me to use ms products. Anything I can I use python pandas for math and vim/latex for writing. But I generally don’t have choices. It’s amazing how easily ms gets companies to chain themselves to the whole ms ecosystem.

It's free and does everything Microsoft apps will do, and will open and save to their file formats.
It's a little different with look and feel but it's free and you can't beat that.

If you want see something cool, look up the exaggerated map of the Earth's geoid, the gravitational equipotential surface that defines "mean sea level". This includes centrifugal terms as well as pure gravitational. You can see the lumpiness of the earth.
Then impose a magnetic map on top of that. That's all very cool. There is a gravitational "hole" over the Indian ocean.

FWIW mine was new in Nov 2019, with hardware that I figured would serve my gaming needs for a decade or more (and Win11 notwithstanding, it probably will. I replaced the 4k monitor that was having electrical issues with a 1920x1440 model that's been much better on my eyes), and it doesn't have the TPM chip that Microsoft has decided we ought to have.
It has annoyed me greatly that so much of the discussion on this topic has been about how MS has done us all a favor supporting Win10 that long, without noting what matters to the user is how long he had the PC, which could be half of that and still not be upgradable.

No kidding. I got out of a hovel in Jollyville (borders north Austin) and into custom 3/2 lake front w/ acreage in ETX for half the price of the Austin location.
If you can get past the heat and humidity (our area denial system) the tall and plentiful trees, peacefulness (other than the ETX wind chimes&dagger
, remarkable lack of traffic and People Who Annoy You, are very attractive features...
Just get a generator because in oil country, they treat power lines like macrame through the tree limbs - which don't respond well to the occasional Q2 storms.

Yeah, that was my original aim also. I ended up in a 'resort/retirement' community with a 1/2 acre lot. BUT - I back up to a 90,000 acre State managed wildlife management area which is a 'no build' area. Best of both worlds really. A lifetime hunting/fishing/trapping/deer stamp/trout stamp license cost me $50.

They'd like you to earn points by making purchases in the Windows store, or playing Xbox.
That rewards page has a bunch of links that refresh at least weekly that basically you click and enter a search term, or the search is automatic, and three similar links that refresh daily. I seem to be picking up ~100 a day in a minute or two (more if there's some kind of brainteaser). If you get enough, you can turn them into Xbox $ and therefore Xbox games (which can largely be played on PC).

Exactly. Some people aren't going to make the jump. Although there are some really powerful computers Right Now using the AMD AI 395+ Max with 128GB of memory priced in the three figures that definitely are CoPilot+ ready.
I'm running a junk AMD 370 with half that memory and have the power, just don't want to run CoPilot+ since it seems like a direct connection to the Surveillance State.

I was just looking at the latest IERS data (earth rotation reference system). The Erf keeps stubbornly spinning faster than predicted. About two weeks ago, the peak in DUTI (difference between UT1 and UTC) was supposed to be today, Oct. 16Z, but now it's pushed out to about Nov. 1.
The error in prediction vs what actually happens is pretty large relatively speaking. Nothing crazy, but just larger than expected. So that's another data point that something unknown is going on. Think of this way, the earth's rotation has a predictable, seasonal component, and an unpredictable, random component. That random component has been giving them fits of late.
Again, 99% chance nothing to worry about. But this is very interesting.

I was holding out for Win 12 but time has run out on my Win 10 machine. It capable of running what I think the Win 12 specs will be. I always over build my PCs. I did the upgrade to Win 11 Monday night and it went very smoothly. Haven't had any problems with running it on my 6 laptop.

I've been following that, but wouldn't really admit it. :-) Everything about known physics says that is crazy, a mushy fluid body should be settled around it's maximum axis of inertia, and something like is un-possible.
However..... magnetic coupling locks in the current state, which is stable, until it isn't. Magnetic lock in the core breaks, and then it's not stable, and the mantle and crust flip around briefly, then returns to the stable magnetic locked state. Or something, if I've got it close to right.

The argument is that the planet will physically flip, like in the Dzhanibekov Oscillation, and then flip back as the magnetic field re-establishes, though maybe at a different orientation.
The claimed archeological evidence is from supposed odd orientations of cyclopean constructions throughout the world being oriented along a line that seems to pass through Tanzania which may or may not have been the north pole for a while.

Just in time, too. Supposed to get mid-30s tonight. House has been chilly the last few days, even with some sunshine at the windows.
Drained hoses, shut off irrigation water & drained lines, secured some items that will stay outdoors.
Only a few odd-jobs left to do outside, before winter really comes-on. Couple more nice days will be enough and looks like I'll get them. Yay again!

I was just looking. Some of these ECDO people have the last flip event happening way too recently. 2K BC or 4K BC or something. That's way too recent. It would be so catastrophic there's no way it could've happened that recently, everything would've been wiped out.
Green Sahara follows the Milankovich cycles, and happens when perihelion is occurring in Northern summer, rather than winter where it occurs now.
It was last in summer about 11 kya, and the Green Sahara ended maybe 5 - 6 kya.

Winter isn't usually "horrible" here, but it does freeze and will get very windy at times. Snow is unpredictable, may or may not stay for long, does not often get deeper than one foot accumulation. Ice on the roadways is our biggest issue.

Drove from Kansas City to Oklahoma City in a blizzard pulling a trailer. Maxed out at 26 mph, 27 and the truck's going sideways. It's so cold the defroster melts the ice about a third up the windshield. Watched car after car pass me then do a pirouette off the side of the road. No thank you.

I had to cross Snoqualmie Pass at end of January, one winter... O. M. G.!
It was snowing like crazy, and traffic nearly stopped but Pass still open. Once we started moving again, there were IDIOTS in their 4x4s, passing me like I was standing still. A mile or so later? I'm driving by them, as they're overturned in a ditch. (Not LOLing, because it's serious)
4 wheel drive does *not* make you slide-proof on the snow. Those dumb kids hopefully learned without getting injured too badly.

Slowing down is key! Helps to have winter tires, with or without studs, and AWD/4WD. Heck, even front-wheel drive is better than rear-wheel drive, IMO.
Can't go zipping around when roads are slick, that's suicidal.

I was in Lancaster, PA one winter and I'd have gone slow but kee-rist, there I was in a shopping area one icy day and all the other cars were flying along like they were in a rush! Cars just like mine (no chains, no 4WD) and I could barely make a right turn without donuting out into the middle of traffic. I truly didn't see how those other cars kept to the road.

I actually have them cooperating on finding solutions to our problems. It's actually pretty interesting. I'll present one's idea to the other. That generates other ideas. I bring it back to the first one and they get ideas. And with the back and forth, their blind spots dissolve and problems get fixed.

Reading some more about that magnetic anomaly. Back in 2007, there was a gravitational anomaly off the west coast of Africa, and it was accompanied by a "magnetic jerk".
IOW, satellites detected a wig-woggle of the earth's gravitation field (very tiny, but measurable) over that region, along with similar wig-woggling of the magnetic field. This was attributed to mass redistributions afoot in the lower mantle.
