Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() ![]() (By the way, pay no attention to the correlation between Democrat presidents and the beef supply.) And as the basic laws of economics suggest, when supply shrinks, prices tend to go up when demand is consistent or rising, so there is...get this...pricing pressure to increase supply! I know, that's just crazy talk. It's not like cattle ranchers enjoy making money or anything. They are obviously in the business for altruistic reasons, and are more than willing to cut prices even though they have fewer head to sell, just so you and I can enjoy more good American corn-fed beef! I for one am very pleased that the immutable laws of economics have been repealed for the cattle industry, because beef is one of my favorite foods! At least that is what President Trump is suggesting. Trump says US cattle producers benefiting from tariffs, need to drop beef prices President Donald Trump says U.S. cattle ranchers are benefiting from tariffs he has imposed on imports but must lower prices to encourage American consumers to buy their beef. Trump earlier this week said the administration was considering importing Argentine beef as a means of lowering record-high consumer beef prices. The suggestion angered U.S. ranchers. U.S. farmers also recently lost out to Argentina on soybean sales to China. "The Cattle Ranchers, who I love, don't understand that the only reason they are doing so well, for the first time in decades, is because I put Tariffs on cattle coming into the United States, including a 50% Tariff on Brazil," Trump wrote in a post Wednesday, Oct. 22, on Truth Social. "They also have to get their prices down, because the consumer is a very big factor in my thinking, also!" Did you notice the inane, stupid, and gratuitous shot at Trump in the quotation? What the hell does the soybean market have to do with the subject of the article? Anyway, President Trump is mistaken that his bully pulpit is an appropriate use for demanding that American cattle ranchers do exactly the wrong thing to ease high beef prices. His suggestion is simply nonsense. The only way beef prices will come down (and every Econ 1 student knows this), is if those ranchers see the high prices and decide to raise more cattle. That's how economies work, and directives from the President smack of price controls, five-year-plans, central planning, and all sorts of interference by bureaucrats into the unimaginably complex decisions that run market economies. If President Trump wants to help beef prices come down in America, he should streamline the bureaucratic roadblocks to cattle production and processing. Maybe end the ridiculous ethanol boondoggle so more of that corn can be fed to cattle. Maybe ease the Department of Agriculture's byzantine rules on slaughter. Maybe tell the EPA to back the f*ck off of farmers and cattle ranchers. There is a lot he can do, but simply demanding that the beef industry cut their prices isn't one of them. You are mostly correct here. Short term relief is not really available but it will take more than one season to ramp up domestic production to the equilibrium level wherever that may be.
Your key statement, and the crux of the problem, is, and I quote, "he should streamline the bureaucratic roadblocks". Once again, this is the solution instead of tariffs. The bureaucracy and its rules, rules, RULES! are the problem. Tariffs can not and will not solve this but will only make things worse for the consumer (you!). Get rid of the government interference and production will naturally increase, prices will come down and there will be a new favorable equilibrium which will include some portion of foreign produced beef. All will be cheaper than today. The tariffs feed right into the hands of Gates and his lab produced meat as it will become more attractive, to some, than natural beef because of prices. EOL. It also doesn't help there have been several herd cullings in recent years, either from disease or economic forces (can't afford the feed--I remember this from back during the COVID business). It's kept the cattle inventory artificially low as a result, which given how the Left seems to hate cattle and beef and being able to feed people in general, may have been the point.

Are cattle ranchers being assessed an X number $'s per head to offset their farts yet? I seem to recall seeing that was coming. Also adding expensive components to their food to make them pass less gas for Mother Earf? Everything's so fake and ghey anymore, I don't know what's real and what isn't.

"There is a lot he can do, but simply demanding that the beef industry cut their prices isn't one of them."
Did I miss something in the Trump statement? Where did he demand that they cut their prices? From what I read, it appears as though he said "They also have to get their prices down". Where, precisely, in that statement does he say they must cut their prices? Cutting prices and getting prices down are NOT the same thing. Ranchers can get the prices down by increasing their herds. There may even be options for streamlining the pasture to grocery store process that could lower costs and prices. That isn't " cutting " prices it's bringing the price down by using market practices. "Cutting" the price suggests they should drop prices without lowering costs and take a financial loss. When has Trump ever suggested that private business owners should ignore profit/loss to give hand outs to consumers? I can't think of an example, but if someone else can I would like to see a link to that. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at October 23, 2025 11:32 AM (2J/Lj) 95
79 It also doesn't help there have been several herd cullings in recent years, either from disease or economic forces (can't afford the feed--I remember this from back during the COVID business). It's kept the cattle inventory artificially low as a result, which given how the Left seems to hate cattle and beef and being able to feed people in general, may have been the point.
yep Tim and I think it was more "icing on the cake" than "the point" but either way the Left would like us to not raise cattle here in the US. they show that pretty plainly all the time. Posted by: BlackOrchid at October 23, 2025 11:32 AM (emBoF) 96

My wife's family raise cattle, so every year we buy a steer and get it butchered and fill our freezer. This year the steer was exceptionally large (but not tough, actually, one of the best we've ever had), so large we had to purchase another freezer! We put over 700# of beef, bones, and tallow in the freezer a couple weeks ago.
Factoring in processing, the price works out to about $4-5 a pound, but that includes all cuts - steaks, brisket, ground beef, roast, etc. It's a great deal if you can find a source and manage the storage. The quality is generally much above store-bought beef. We're in Texas and the beef comes from north of Hondo. Posted by: Sloucho at October 23, 2025 11:33 AM (bX7qw) 99

Market forces at work, after all of the government restrictions, regulations, inspections, and oversights. Short term, we need increased beef imports and a handle on the screwworm crisis. Presidents can't control the weather and they shouldn't even think of price controls, but US beef production has hit significant headwinds of our own making.

Back in the '50's through '70's, there was a chain of "Woodwards" department stores in B.C. Very fine stores, and they had awesome grocery departments. First time i ever saw live lobsters in tanks. Anywa, the founder of the chain, C.M. "Chunky" Woodward, owned a ranch in the Cariboo country, and once a year, Woodwards stores would have a big sale on grass-fed beef off his ranch. Much awaited by the foodies. Back in the day, beef were normally fattened on barley, not corn. My cousin raises beef cattle. Last year she had a side of beef that she needed to line up a buyer for so she could get the cow to the processor. She called me. We got over 300#s of beef that filled our upright freezer. Price was for beef plus processing around $1000. We still have ground beef, a couple of roasts, some steak, and a Ginormous brisket. I have no idea how to cook brisket. No we do not own a smoker nor will we be getting one.
Next time, maybe I'll just get a quarter instead of a side of beef. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at October 23, 2025 11:58 AM (2J/Lj) 183

I think they mean short-term, temporary price reduction caused by increasing beef on the market with all the culled. Which makes sense to a politician because they're only thinking about today's polls, not long-term consequences. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at October 23, 2025 12:01 PM (YVuAl) 190

Posted by: Dr. Claw Any time anything threatens cattle production, ranchers rush to dump beef while prices are high. No one wants to carry beef while prices are low. [Does quick search on Screwworms and gets this initial result:] The New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that lays eggs in open wounds and whose larvae feed on living tissue, has been detected in cattle in Nuevo León, Mexico, just 70 miles from the U.S. border, prompting renewed concerns about its potential invasion into the United States. This development follows a series of import suspensions and heightened surveillance efforts, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues to halt live cattle, horse, and bison imports from Mexico to prevent the spread of the pest. Clocking in 🕚 late today. Howdy.
President Donald Trump says U.S. cattle ranchers are benefiting from tariffs he has imposed on imports but must lower prices… Can't expect a New York realty mogul to understand animal agriculture all that well, I guess. The gals out in the pasture have been doing their part to increase supply. Nine calves frolicking around, last I checked, with a few more on the way. MiladyJo got a snapshot of a calf not even an hour old. So cute. You're right about slaughterhouse rules. they should, but in this case they mostly didn't again this was explained to me lol but I have the memory of a 29 year old! but basically the mess happened bc of Biden-era herd mismanagement - the fedgov messing with pricing and the large scale ranchers just going along and not thinking things thru (or being pushed that way, maybe but I think they just went with it and took the $$ bc feed prices were so high) Posted by: BlackOrchid at October 23, 2025 12:19 PM (emBoF) 225

We do not have free markets. We have controlled markets. All the inputs into the markets are controlled.
Here in the US, we a too big to fail scenario, were we only have four entities that can butcher and process meat to markets. You can increase the inputs by 10,000,000 but if new producers cant come online to solve the bottle, more product wont reach the market just b/c you increased inputs.
