I've been watching a YouTube video series where the guy takes local trains from Tokyo all the way to Japan's easternmost railway station at the tip of Hokkaido.
The thing that struck me is that it wasn't until he got out into eastern Hokkaido that I saw landscape that felt rural to me. Australia is very empty, yes, but Japan felt very full. Posted by: Pixy Misa at October 12, 2025 04:12 AM (BLOW1) 8

One of the things I've started doing with potential major purchases is looking at the company's "about us" section of their webpage. If it looks like they're playing with DEI or ESG, that potential purchase gets scrutinized much more, or I just go with a competitor's product if theirs is of good quality and they show no signs of the DEI/ESG infection.

Evening and morning to all the satellites of AoSHQ on this Sunday!
I'm awake after an odd dream (aren't they all?). I was working in a big office, but for some reason the bosses were gone, so we goofed off all day long. Somebody suggested taking the lids of copy paper boxes, greasing them with butter or margarine, and "sledding" up and down the carpeted halls. Oddly, we stayed all day until five p.m. Then, when I left, it was raining and I'd forgotten my hat, while a coworker I'd encouraged to buy a fedora had remembered his. So, whassup? I voted last night in my local elections. The blonde former TV anchorwoman, Helena Moreno, won handily. She's a Dem, of course, a Hillary supporter, but at least when the mayor is on TV in the future we won't want to avert our eyes. I voted for every R I could find -- 'tweren't many -- and none won or even made a decent showing, which is normal around here. Another black woman won the sheriff's race. She may be the daughter of, or related somehow to, a black male sheriff or police chief we had some years ago of the same name.

As I mentioned last night, the big dead (?) tree outside my bedroom window collapsed with a sound like thunder yesterday afternoon. Fortunately it fell *away* from my window. It broke the rear window of a car, not mine, at the curb, and scattered chunks of what is now firewood across the street and blocked the sidewalk.
I called, then posted a service request with pics on the 311 website. Since tomorrow is a holiday, and this whole place is a pesthole, we probably won't see the tree removed for some days. With some work gloves on, I'll try moving the big branches in the street to the curb at least, so we can drive through. OTOH, if you misspell Australia, you get this...
"Australia is significantly larger than Texas, with the area of Australia being approximately 7,741,220 square kilometers, while Texas covers about 678,052 square kilometers. This means that Texas is only about 8.76% the size of Australia. Consequently, Australia can fit almost thirty Texases within its borders. More precisely, Texas can fit into Australia roughly 11 times, as Australia is roughly eleven times the size of Texas. This vast difference in land area is further emphasized by the fact that several Australian states and territories, including Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and South Australia, are each larger than Texas" Posted by: I used to have a different nic at October 12, 2025 07:38 AM (ExV1e) 115

The land area of Australia is about 7,741,220 square kilometers (2,967,904 square miles), while Texas covers approximately 678,052 square kilometers (268,596 square miles). Dividing Australia's area by Texas's area yields roughly 11.05, meaning Australia is more than ten times larger than Texas. This comparison highlights that while Texas is the second-largest state in the United States, it is dwarfed by the vast landmass of Australia, which is the planet's sixth-largest country. Morning peeps.
I have one of those Bose "Sound Touch" systems. Got it because the TV speakers sucked. It was always hooked up to our cable box and we had to use 3 different remotes to get anything to work right. Still have it, simplified our TV watching by going full streaming, and only need one remote now. The sound is pretty good. Don't see a reason to get rid of it as I can listen to streamed music via Roku or play my tunes off a thumb drive attached to the TV. Something to do with a bad sound profile, and high cost when there are better options for less money. I’m not that much of a perfectionist when it comes to audio. For some reason she has a reputation as a Great Actress despite playing the same damned whiny blonde white girl in every movie. Compare her to someone with an actual range, for example Cloris Leachman or Billy Bob Thornton. By the way, Thornton is outstanding in the current series "Landman", in which he plays a character who has absolutely no overlap with Carl Childers in Slingblade, with the trivial exception that both are of the hillbilly persuasion. In "Tulsa King", also on Paramount+, Sylvester Stallone does some of the best acting of his career as a decidedly non-woke Mob boss who gets exiled to Tulsa after spending a few decades in the can. @GiorgiaMeloni
Today we celebrate the National Day of Christopher Columbus, established in 2004 to honor one of the greatest Italians that Italy can boast of. With his extraordinary journey 533 years ago, Columbus gave the world another world. He conceived an adventure that no one else before him had imagined. He sailed to the West, beyond the confines of the world known at the time. A “new Ulysses”, who was not shipwrecked but who succeeded in one of the most glorious feats of all time. A feat that marked the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age, rewrote geography and changed political, cultural and economic relations between peoples. The voyage of Columbus laid the foundations of that indissoluble bond that unites the two sides of the Atlantic, Europe and America, and which represents the core of what we call the West. Not a physical or geographical space, but a system of values that we want to defend and preserve. Our mission is not to tear down the statues of the past and erase the heroes who shaped our identity, but to add our statues and heroes to that story, with pride and humility. ... ... Billy Bob Thornton alongside Iggy Pop in Dead Man:

If Hamas gives up the hostages and reasserts military control over what’s left of Gaza, it will be the greatest self-own for them of all time. In fact, I think Trump and Netanyahu are counting on that to happen.
Why? Because once all the hostages are released, Israel is free from having to complete the invasion, a thing they clearly do not want to do. AND if this happens, steps 2 - 20 of the peace plan collapse. So what? Most of those are in favor of Hamas, such as rebuilding. Israel will have the luxury of simply sealing off Gaza - all of their long range weapons are gone - and letting them kill each other, while the Arab countries look like fools for saying they would help administer it. I like McCafe and Community Coffee House Blend. McCafe is easily obtainable around here not to many choices of Community.
On a motor trip we stopped at a local grocery for food. It had three shelves for about six feet of Community Coffee only. So many varieties. I stocked up. Even during non - Amazon Prime Day - it pays to dig around a bit before you click "proceed to checkout" even when you've spotted and "added to cart" exactly what you want.
Just in the last few months I've - several times - found on Amazon the SAME ITEM listed a second time but at a lower price. Also seen bundles (handheld label printer) where the item - with add ons - is cheaper than the item alone. Posted by: BobM at October 12, 2025 09:33 AM (85Wlp) 211

By the way, Thornton is outstanding in the current series "Landman", in which he plays a character who has absolutely no overlap with Carl Childers in Slingblade, with the trivial exception that both are of the hillbilly persuasion. You wouldn't even know it was the same guy. Seriously.

There is an addon you can get for your browser called Keepa which will show you a price graph over time on the item description page at the Amazon site.
It is very good to see if you are getting an actual deal on the item. You can also set price alerts on the same page so you will be notified if the item hits the price point you want. There is also a CapitalOne addon which will compare the Amazon price to other sources like ebay and tell you if it finds a lower price. It picks the wrong item sometimes but that is easy enough to see and it offers other incentives like cash back etc... Between those two addons I have save a ton of money.
