1. Eastern Ukraine, including Kiev, has been hit hard with drone and missile attacks over the last few days. Lots of blackouts and loss of water, central heating plants down too. It's almost as if the Russians want to run everyone out of eastern Ukraine so they can take it over.
2. On the ground, things are looking grim for the Ukrainians. Too much front line and too few bodies to hold it. Two months ago the Russians punched a 10 mile salient into Ukrainian territory. The Ukrainians threw everything they had at it, trying to collapse it. After a tough few weeks, the Russians are pushing back and the salient is growing.

I’ve surmised back in the day, with horses, even 25 or 35 miles was a big deal. Getting up early and saddling up. 20 miles is a long day. They have to be fed and watered and cut loose to graze. They need grain when pushed hard. Horse shoes, maintenance, saddle sores.

It being San Diego, there are some who show up in sandals. But shooting and surfing are hobbies not rarely combined here. One of my RSO crew is a surfer, such a long-time fixture at a particular beach that his name is on the old timer's monument there.
Surprised today when half the hockey locker room started talking about surfing - and not here, but in Peru and NZ. So hockey and surfing, also a thing. I know one of the indelible scars of my teenage-hood was hockey practice in the morning, followed by body surfing after, usually this time of year. Brutal. Amazing what humans can endure.

It's also helping me avoid the temptation to seek satisfaction through violence. I've avoided it for 7 years but I felt my discipline fading. Strange though - people are always clutching pearls over violence, you would think that struggling to avoid it would get some consideration. Whatever. I just need to stay true and continue to use words to get a retraction of the lies she spread about my military service. I can't lose. It's simply a matter of when she'll do the right thing.

A former colleague, once stationed in Bad Tolz Germany (home of the SS officer training school) did a paper on the Germans use of rolling stock of their RR to haul Jews instead of supplies. He was able to interview several senior officers about it. Short answer, "We were ordered to." The really interesting part was their ability to work around rail disruptions due to sabotage and bombing.

Any of you early-rising Moon watchers take note. This morning and tomorrow will be about the highest you'll ever see the Moon in the sky.
The Moon is a harsh orbital mistress -- all sorts of complex precessions and stuff going on. 2025, around March, was a major lunistice (standstill), which means the Moon's orbital plane is the most inclined it can be to the earth's equator.
And right now, things are aligned so that it's about at max declination near enough to the full Moon, so you have a very bright Moon as high in the sky as it can ever be. The "lunar tropic" is at 28.7 degrees latitude now, which is about at Orlando. The Moon will directly overhead in Orlando. This means in Miami, the Moon will be *north* at transit, not south.
For me here at 34.7N, it will be over 83 degrees high. This will not happen again for 18.6 years.

As seen elsewhere - Qatar bought a bunch of F-15 and included in the package pilot training (and probably the whole support system). Apparently Mountain Home will be the Base where they will training.
The "facility" will likely be something Qatar wants it's crews to have. Maybe it will be the biggest mosque and hookah bar in the state.

I don't know about Toyota anymore. We had an Echo as a commuter car for 15 years(?) Ran great, no issues. I'm bad on clutches and it never wore out.
But we bought a Toyota Highlander 2 years ago and its been a disaster. And stupid ergonomics - like no interior glow for dashboard controls, you have to look into the blinding overhead light to find the off switch, the navigation is anti-driver friendly with several "are you really sure" prompts. Something has changed at Toyota, as if they put someone's "niece" in charge of quality control.

we have had professionally trained dogs that used training collars, and I have tried the shock so we wold be comfortable with the collars. it is not a violent shock, its what you get when you touch live wires.
It is also much more effective and not as violent as choke collars.

Thank you! Hit the road about 10:00 AM, pulled in here at 2300. About 12 hours road time, about 700 miles. Roads good, traffic light, weather gorgeous. Saw a weird dead critter in a field just north of Vulcan, AB. About the size of an elk, has skinny horns with two tines, and it s coat was glossy black, no brown on it.

...and if you want to throw in a class on daily living skills, that's fine too.
It would take time, but IMHO? We'd start to see the rot in young people's minds clear out after a while.

Agree on the Civics. Been saying that for a long time. I'd pair that Critical Thinking course with Logic.
One of the hardest courses I ever took in college was Symbolic Logic.
An after thought would be to have a course on propaganda, what it is and how it works. Show Leni Riefenstahl, Al Gore, MSNBC/CNN and such to teach how one can be manipulated into believing bullshit. Pair that with Critical Thinking and Logic.

There was a lake behind my old house. One 4th of july somebody showed up with a bag full of block busters, or 1/4 sticks as they called them. We were taping rocks to them with duct tape and throwing them way out in the water. It was amazing how you felt the ground at the shoreline thump when they went off. You would see this flash well under the surface and them *thump*. I think thats when I realized how depth charges wrecked submarines.

yeah that drives me nuts when that happens.
Lately I'm a bit discombobulated in time and balance. Had emergency surgery for a detached retina last Fri. Drive into Berwyn for last surgery, 6 pm Fri night.
Then J drives home and back the next day. A great way to celebrate my 70th! Really it was cause prolly saved the eyesight in my right and dominant eye.
Has anyone heard from Grammie Winger recently? IIRC we share the same birthday, Oct 4 and are close in age, both born in IL.

I stopped completely after one fateful weekend, 'sitting for my then-bf's brother: he had a 3yr old, a 2yr old, and a 6month old. Supposed to be "out for dinner and a movie" with his wife on a Friday night. They left at 4pm. "We'll be back by 10", he said. "Kids' dinner is in the fridge, just heat it up." OK.

11pm: phone call. "Oh, we're having so much fun and it's been so long since we had a night to ourselves... be back by midnight."

And then had the ballz to ask if I'd 'sit for them again, "just for a couple of hours"-- they actually had bf's parents do the asking this time. Like I was supposed to do it for The Fambly or whatever.
I happily informed bf's parents that I would never, ever, EVER 'sit for _____ again, even if he decided to pay me for last time (which he never did) and that he shouldn't bother asking again.
