I have the same spaghetti tangle of old cables, and they do come in handy. A power cable from an old computer, the kind with the sort of triangular three-prong female end, worked perfectly when the cord for my electric steamer went bad not long ago. And I use FireWire 400 all the time to charge iPods, as many of the old ones require it.

Once abducted, any Israeli is assumed dead. Mourned, maybe rescued, but never, NEVER AGAIN, traded for live terrorists. Not just government policy but national consensus.

"28 What good is all that crap if you don't have electricity"
Going to be very, very difficult to "not have electricity". I have redundant solar setups with long service life panels, and more than enough tools, materials, and reference books to rig alternators for wind, water, etc. That's obviously not counting anything that'd require fuel, though some kinda wood gasifier setup is also doable. I'm not sure how anyone who remembers the before times makes it to 2025 without thinking about these things, unless they're so far past 29 that they plan on kicking the bucket soon anyways. Though I am sure there are millions who should have another 10-20+ potential years in them who blew huge stacks golfing or derping around in RV's or whatever instead. Particularly when they should be considering their descendants. On the whole I am pretty disappointed in our society. Posted by: heya at October 12, 2025 02:22 PM (RqE5V) 45

A have a friend who worked for a company who did a lot of A/V in places like madison square garden. The waste was epic, because if they had to do a few hundred foot pull of cables, and there's a 100 feet left on a spool, it's useless, so in the trash it went. He brought me a shitload of silver plated cable and the connectors needed. Spools of Cat5 also. Then there was kinds of plugs, and other connectors, heavy gauge speaker wire, RCA jacks, 1/4" jacks, 1/8" jacks, microphone jacks, etc. Then you got all the crap from the house, phone crap, wall warts, etc. I used it all to wire the old house, and I used it on the new house. Willowed from last thread...
157 It is hard to admit, but Trump has saved Bibi's butt. 1. There is a significant number of Israelis who will give up anything to get the hostages back. Israeli is not united. Trump helps Bibi on that front and gives him cover from the populace who wants to wipe Gaza from the face of the earth. 2. Trump convinces Bibi that he can't fight the world, even with US help. 3. Since it is likely the deal goes sideways, given Hamas in general, Bibi gets carte blanc to wipe them out. This doesn't include all the good things it does for Trump. A neat little gadget is one of those multi-interface disk drive hubs that you can attach to a barebones drive and access via a computer. I have about a half dozen old HDD's and SSD's pulled from various computers over the years and sometimes remember an old, obsolete piece of software that might be useful for this or that. Or an old PC game that will only run under some emulator.

One of my problems is harley parts. I have a shit ton of parts stashed, like silly shit ton. I have boxes of small parts that might never make it into an engine, but good enough to repurposed for other things (the AOP disease lol), like bearings, bushings, etc. I have some old points and condensers from the old ignition systems, because they were USA made, and would work in a pinch. A few years ago a guy I actually taught to work on harleys 30 years ago when he was probably 18 and now has his own shop called me with an ignition problem. He was working on an oldie that still had points. he says the points are sparking bright blue, like he could weld with it. I said the condenser is bad. He says its new. I said these days that don't mean shit, its made in yang poon, do you have an old one laying around? He tells me he found an old used one laying in a drawer that looks older than him. I said put that in and call me back. 5 minutes later he calls and says I can't believe that worked. I told him I would trust any old decent looking pos than half the shit coming out of china.

Until recently, say the last 2 years I held onto pretty much everything. Today I have updated my hardware so USB-C, HDMI and Wi-Fi cover 95% of my connectivity needs. The other 5% are for a few USB-A devices and a single ethernet cable from the Verizon gateway to the NAS. The USB-A devices will be replaced in due time. At that time I expect to have a couple of boxes of USB-C and HDMI cables in every length and color imaginable - PROGRESS! 134 Have tried.everything.
Posted by: Diogenes Diogenes, First, do you have one of those combo cable modem/wifi router? If so, go and search on Amazon for xfinity qualified modem that meets whatever speed you purchased from Xfinity. Runs from $100-200 for gigabyte plus modem that is xfinity approved. Never buy a refurbished unit as Xfinity and other cable providers register the internals upon initial activation and are often careless about expunging that initial registration when the customer quits xfinity, buys a new modem, etc. Thus, you can never be sure a refurb will activate with the service provider. Brands are Arris, Netgear, and Hitron. Docsis 3.1 or higher. As far as routers, the sky is the limit depending on house size, construction of it, and how fast and how many ports. Sweet spot is roughly Wifi 6 or 6e as far as cost/performance. Asus and Netgear make good routers that are regularly updated for security. Linksys, high for what you get but ok. Some Asus routers can also run open WRT but you need a little tech acumen for that. TP-link is the cheapest for the best tech but also a Chicom company that may or may not be compromised. Maybe it's me, but I don't see a RS-232 cable in there anywhere.

Agreed, never know when you might need them /s. Think I have as RS232 laying around somewhere. Back in the day, I always made my own cables because Radio Shack carried the DB 25 hoods and connectors and I was too cheap.

Up front - have been in IT/tech for 43 years.
Have worked as a field engineer, bench tech, help desk, sys admin, security analyst at a large university. Have been self employed for the past 18 years supporting small/medium sized businesses, non-profits and law enforcement. Have now filled a 10x20 climate controlled storage unit with shelving. On those shelves are almost every type of cable and adapter known to man. Additionally - there are approximately 200 laptops (mostly working), 20 desktops/AIOS, several dozen monitors, several dozen switches, WAPS that were never used, UPSs, etc. Hard drives, RAM, hundreds of old laptop AC adapters. The thought of having this stuff laying around when the zombie apocalypse occurs is the only thing keeping me from having the mother of all garage sales. And the fact that my wife would kill me if she knew about the other stuff I have in storage..... Posted by: reallygeeky at October 12, 2025 06:26 PM (U18hE) 177
Only ONE bin?
I just upgraded my iPhone - making the number of devices I commonly use that need a lightning connector ZERO. Couple that with more energy now that I've recently lost 50 lbs and I went on a cable inventory reduction spree. I was astonished how often over the years I must have bought a new cable (Lightning or Other) whenever I couldn't immediately locate a spare. Ditto for extension cords and any other sort of connector you could need. Digging deep into assorted storage spots I even found a working prehistoric iPod 1/10th the size of my current music player (my iPhone). Hopefully the nearby GoodWill will be a bonanza for anyone needing current and out-dated cables who wants to spend a dollar instead of $5+. Posted by: BobM at October 12, 2025 06:28 PM (85Wlp) 178
Addendum - I cleaned (if needed), untangled and cable-tied, and labeled (if needed) all the more esoteric cables and tech stuff I sent to GoodWill. Hopefully that will enable them to sell them instead just dumping on them bags of tangled up stuff to figure out or deep 6 to their dumpster.

I have a large blue plastic bin, filled with printed circuit boards that I have salvaged over the years. I mean..., you just never know when you may need a part.
That argument worked up until about 20 years ago. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 12, 2025 06:52 PM (XeU6L) 180
