It's easy to second-guess our politicians, particularly when they insert themselves into complex and seemingly intractable geopolitical issues.

President Donald Trump has done something in the Middle East that Eisenhower couldn't do, Nixon couldn't do, Reagan couldn't do, the Bushes certainly couldn't do, and we won't even mention Obama and Biden.

He has forged a consensus and ended, at least temporarily, an ugly event in a region that is famous for ugliness. Will Hamas honor the ceasefire? Maybe. Will they return the remaining bodies? Maybe. Will they reconstitute and once again threaten Israel with destruction? Maybe.

But the odds are better now than they have been for the entirety of Israel's existence as a modern nation, and that is a very impressive accomplishment, especially when much of the West is at best ambivalent about President Trump!

There will be time to pick the agreement apart, and I am not holding my breath for a lasting peace, but still, it is far, far better than it has ever been!

It was a stunning achievement in most respects, and the fact that the world isn't clamoring with adulation for President Trump is a sad commentary on the rest of the world, not on President Trump.

Neil Young to Pull His Music off Amazon Because 'Bezos Supports This Government'

I really liked Neil Young for a few years when I was young and stupid. I saw him live at The Greek Theater in Berkeley about 100 years ago, and it was a good show, but after that? Eh...nothing new, just recycled crap from his heyday.

But now he looks and sounds like the drug-addled lunatic on the corner of a seedy part of a shitty blue city. He seems not to have noticed that most people don't know who he is, or even worse, don't care.

Creedence Clearwater Revival is great. It's easy to minimize them because they were in the same era as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beach Boys, etc., but they are the equal of those bands. That they are less-well-known is a function of their longevity, or lack thereof!

Dagny has been getting more . . . companionable . . . in the last few months. Tonight, she was sprawled on her side on the table. I simply scooped her up and placed her, still on her side, on my lap. Expecting her to vault immediately away, I was astonished when she stayed, enjoying fur ruffling and belly rubbing (which she has always loved), for quite a while.

I'll try to manage this every day and see if it can become a habit.

35 My college roommate and I saw Neil Young and Poco at the Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, 'way back in 1971.

We were up in the nosebleed balcony and they looked like ants on the stage. The crowd was stamping hard in time with Poco and we more than half expected the shoddy, shaky upper balcony to collapse. Actually moved over and stood near the exit just in case.

Hitchhiking back to Wisconsin was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. A memorable journey.

Did you hear the "argument" they're using to prove it was "biden's framework?"

They're saying biden-harris, at the end of their term had already "designed" the "key phases" of the "plan."

Yeah, biden, the Architect, created Phase 1: the ceasefire. Fucking astounding, right? Then, biden-harris thought of Phase II. Yeah, Phase II, you guessed it: release of the hotsausages. Fucking brilliant!

But, alas, biden-harris didn't have time to work out Phase III, which was "governing of Gaza." But Trump totally stole the first "key phases," which were the hard part. The last phase, the governing part, was the easy phase that Trump came up with.

93 CCR

I've posted about this before. I read John Fogerty's autobio, & then did some follow-up research to see whether he was full of skit or not. He's not.

I concluded that these things are true, & that they contributed to the fact, as CBD notes, that somehow CCR is often overlooked compared to the band's peers:

1) Fogerty & the others signed their first contract without a lawyer or an agent. Neither Fogerty nor the others had any business experienceThe man who controlled their songs & their money for 30 years or so was a crook & a sleazebag's sleazebag. All of their money ended up in the Netherlands Antilles-- and disappeared. Surprised?

Here's why your puny mind that doesn't command a trillion dollars in managed assets is wrong, and you should be embarrassed to even have a thought, let alone express one."

152 That was the music biz in those days. They would do anything to get signed, and they had you by the balls. Pretty much everyone got screwed, if they became successful they would get a new manager, and buy out their original contract and get new terms.

Fogerty got sued because one of his later tunes he wrote sounded, they claimed, like an earlier tune he wrote (which he did not own the rights). I believe it was “Run through the jungle” and “Old man is down the road”.

Neil Young got sued because he put out an album that didn’t sound like Neil Young. Might have been David Geffen. Said it was not characteristic of Neil Young. “Put out a rock and roll album”. So he formed the Shocking Pinks and did a 50s themed album. Really pissed Geffen off, who probably wanted another album like Harvest, that sold a lot.

Neil does what the fuck he wants, I can’t argue with that. I don’t agree with him on politics but he’s pretty good guy in a really sleazy business.

164 I can only think of two instances where an old-school band got the best of a record company.

One being when the Rolling Stones still owed Allan Klein's ABKCO a song before they could leave the label.

They came up with a little ditty called "Cocksucker Blues" (title was later reused for a film), with Jagger singing in a whiny voice about getting his cock sucked and his ass fucked, while Richard played a twangy steel guitar.

Technically it fulfilled the contract, but was, at the time, completely unreleasable.

The other was the Sex Pistols, who managed to collect signing checks from two record companies who let them go after realizing just what they had. "Keep the money. Just please don't kill us."

166 Tommy James had to hide out and work in Nashville for a spell, having upset a NY music producer who was taking him to the cleaners. David Bowie kept his good stuff under wraps for over 5 years because he hated his management. As soon as he got out from under that, he released his pent-up good material and had a huge surge of sales and popularity in the 80s.

Some of the Brill Building music promoters/producers were legit mobbed up.

Everybody hates the change, it's just whether we should stay with Standard Time or Daylight time that is the 50/50 thing.

We tried permanent DST under Nixon -- "energy crisis". A majority was in favor. Then came the winter solstice, pushing sunrise clock times close to 10AM for those on the western most edges of time zones and higher latitudes. That didn't fly at all.

I suspect the same thing will happen again if they went with permanent DST.

120-130" of snow has a way of changing your thinking about that, though. Or at least it does me and my 29-year-old body.

That sucks even with a snowblower, especially with 100 feet of driveway to clear before you can even get to the alley (which the city never plows until just before trash day).

I don't mind mowing in the summer, but if we get one of those winters where the snow hits 3 feet at a time, and doesn't melt until May...

As far as time zones go, Standard/Daylight doesn't make much difference to us here in Alaska, as the time has only a loose correlation with the sun to begin with. What would really make a difference is giving us back our four time zones. Some bright spark back in the '80s decided that it would be good to have all of Alaska on one time zone (except for the parts so far west that they're practically Russia, which rate a second time zone). It was touted as making it easier to do business with the West Coast. Of course, nowadays business runs 24/7/365, so that justification no longer makes a helluva lot of sense.

In the old days, time was an entirely local thing, what is known as local mean time or local apparent solar time. The idea of the govt setting time standards would've seemed ridiculous. Time thus changed pretty much continuously with longitude. Each town, or major hub would sort of the local time at solar noon -- if they knew the Equation of Time and had a good observatory, then could set things to true mean time, but for most people it didn't matter. You set your watch/clock to noon at high noon. Given the accuracy of most mechanical time pieces at the time, that variation didn't matter.

Then came the railroads, and that variation in local time became a matter of life and death. There were several accidents, including one where 14 people were killed when two trains collided -- each train thought the other was nowhere near, because they had synced their clocks to different local times.

The railroads realized they needed to synchronize their clocks. And thus "railroad time" was born. That became Standard Time referenced off Greenwich Mean Time.

Note the federal govt had nothing to do with setting Standard TIme and the time zones. The railroads along with the states did that entirely on their own. The old standard for mechanical watches, Swiss, was -4 to +6 s per day. The 2s bias was due to people sort of preferring watches to err on the fast side, not slow. They'd rather be early than late. And also a mechanical thing. With the mechanisms, it was easier to slow a watch down than speed it up after a point.

For mechanical watches, you can get free "timegrapher" apps for the smart phones which can tell you a mechanical watch's error and other behavior. I've got one and used for several watches I have. Pretty cool thing.

Proud of Trump, but have no faith in any lasting peace. Quite the achievement, nonetheless, and I'm happy the hostages are home, although I question the decision to drag all this out for the sake of hostages.
Also, as someone reared by Holy Rollers, the idea of peace in the middle east makes me nervous. Does anyone know if any rabbis have discovered a completely red heifer calf without a single white hair?

You know how, in the movies, people will bite a gold coin to determine if it's real or counterfeit?

You can do the same thing with pocket watches. Try to bite it once.

If you're forced to bite it a second time, then it's a real choo-choo watch.

This is also the reason the best pocket watches in the world were American in the late 19th century.
The government mandated their accuracy for railroad time.

Then the European wrist watches came along and destroyed the demand for pocket watches.

If interested, see the Day with Two Noons, Nov. 18, 1883. That's when Standard Time was implemented, and all clocks were set to the new standard time zone times.

For locations east of their time zone meridian, such as NYC, that meant local time was ahead and clocks had to be set back. In practice, most of the time they just stopped the main clocks for the necessary interval. But technically, that day had two noons.

If you were west of the meridian, the clocks had to jump forward. At the time, many people were worried about that -- how can you change time? You can't just change time like that!

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 14, 2025 01:55 AM (w6EFb)

341
Just looked that up to see the exact rule. At noon, local time on Nov. 18, 1883, one stepped the clock to the new standard time. So, if you were east of the time zone meridian, that meant your clock would have to be stepped back, before noon, hence "two noons".

But in practice, they just stopped the clocks mostly east. West, they would have to advance it.
