This big crypto crash (~20x the size of the spring 2020 one) seems to have gone nuclear on account of some fundamental bugs (read: something Indian happened, dot-not-feather) in exchange setup. The first thought of many was that this was a deliberate attack of dumping assets, using insider info on who had what positions on margin, and how much, in order to kick off a chain reaction of liquidations... but now it's not clear if this was a deliberate attack, or just whales fucking with the exchanges and it got way out of hand.

At the same time we have the crazy shit going on with precious metals and people are questioning whether the western COMEX/LBMA house of cards is going to survive this one. Other commodities exchanges are about, well, trading commodities. The western ones are primarily about financial fuckery.

I don't think Trump is capable of the structural reforms needed, it's too late. In the long run even in a vacuum the western fiat bullshit is all doomed - the Chinese have their own self-inflicted issues, though who eats it first here matters - so the paper metals stuff is guaranteed to implode at some point.

If you want to speculate with some cash, sure, whatever

Crypto is fundamentally unworkable; if you don't hold the keys (ie it's on an exchange), it's not yours. If you DO hold the keys, you need them on an airgapped device (note the spectacular recent wallet firmware attacks, which most aren't aware of), or even in physical dumb hardcopy.... but when you need to TRANSACT, you must either engage with an unsecure system or transmit over one. I can't lose my physical held assets to someone snagging them remotely due to a firmware exploit, nor can I really lose them due to simply forgetting a password or a government declaring my specific assets contraband by proclamation. ACH/wire fuckups and thefts can be fixed; crypto transactions generally cannot.

The way around this is the same as conducting international trade in things like gold used to be done; a network of trusted institutions and paper pushing, which is exactly what the crypto crowd DOESN'T want... and yet that still leaves the underlying coins vulnerable to government controls and tech traps that would never affect gold

Reminds me of one of the malfunction 'drills' the Black Hats warned of where if you were a 'hung jumper' - meaning your static line had snagged and you were dragged along the side of the plane in it's slipstream - they would foam the runway so when the plane landed the hung jumper would be cushioned by the foam on landing. The 'Hats' said that once the plane stopped you would unhook your harness, run smartly to the front of the plane and salute the pilots while sounding off with a loud and hearty Airborne!

way back in college days, a few misguided souls decided it would be fun to go skydive.

So off we went, hungover, but enthusiastic. Learned the basics of a static line jump, and into the little Cessna we went. I got the passenger's seat ... which meant: First Out.

On take off, the plane executed a hard roll to the right and the passenger door flew up to the wing ... exposing me to mother earth. I instinctively grabbed the pilots leg like a raptor catching it's prey. He not so gently removed my hand and said: "what's your problem, you've got a chute on".

Time came to jump: 4,000 feet. Out onto the strut I stepped .. got the slap on the ass to jump ... and away I fell.

I don't remember anything until the chute opened, and then I panicked, and started grabbing at the webbing girdling my waist and legs. As soon as I calmed down enough to take in the beautiful fall scenery over the Adirondacks, the descent was over.

Once on the ground, the instructors said there was still enough daylight for one more jump for whoever wanted to. Of course I raised my hand ...

Up we went to 4,000 feet ... out onto the strut ... this time I waved bye bye to the instructor ... went into a beautiful arch and counted: one one thousand ... two one thousand ... OH MY FUCKING GOD THE CHUTES NOT OPENING !!!

I clawed at the reserve, and missed the handle for the reserve chute each time (thank god) ... only to feel the jerk of the main opening.

The fact that I passed out on the first jump, distorted my awareness of the time it took to fall away and have the main open.

Great timesv ... but never again.

One of fondest memories was 'training' a dirtbag PV2 over a three day weekend how to get out of bed, get dressed, and make it outside to formation in seven minutes. Until he could be in formation, with a very generous passing grade of 'in uniform with his hair combed, boots tied, and pants bloused'. He would get to do PLF jumps out of the day room window and sprint for the formation spot he assigned to.

Damn that was a fun weekend. SGT Bif was a relentless mean bastard.

Much of the demand driving those metals is actually from other places where economic instability is hitting hard. China and India are some of the biggest purchasers of both metals and China's economy is getting hammered and India's whole plan to get rich export services etc. to the West has come to an end as well.

185 I was an NCO with the 82nd Airborne Division back in the day, now many years ago. My POV on a jump was usually the inky blackness of the void since we almost always jumped at night. We also jumped with our rucks, weapons, and radios. I jumped most of the time with my M60 machinegun, that heavy, cumbersome hunk of steel.

My unit once did a daylight demo jump for 82nd WW2 veterans, and I'm guessing all of them are gone now. We won't see their like again. Those were iron men in those days.

Speaking of daredevils and jumping, I got willowed once when I posted this fun girl who dives off buildings, balconies, bridges, crazy cliffs, cranes, probably places that people used to be thrown off of as punishment. She's sponsored by Red Bull.

What's fun about her is that she's often scared as she's climbing up to the dive points. "Oh my god, you guys, this is so scary! These steps are so creaky! Here I go, climbing over this little railing..."

She's posted so many dives that at this point she's getting silly and posting "Can my lipstick stay on after a 20-meter dive?" and stuff, but the shorts are fun.

I don't think I could do them either., so I would just gently suggest that you do as an old gospel song says, "Have a little talk with Jesus" and tell him all your troubles and your hesitation. I am stuck holding a pretty large amount of cash for various reasons but I seem to have found the ratio where the one inflating away is offset on paper by the shiny things appreciating. So we have that going for us, I guess.

Would rather have bought a lot more solid assets in the past but it is what it is. Cash is a tool. We're about 50/50 cash and land/pm's, and know exactly how good we have it compared to most even if we still pinch pennies day to day.

No equities, paper assets can go get fucked. We're not wealthy enough to ride any paper waves yet.
