14 It looks like the larger boat is under full sail on a very windy day, while the little boat is a rowboat. How exactly do they intend to transfer fish in the fraction of a second that they're close enough to do so?

Lovely painting, but not realistic.

65 I enjoy Turner's seascapes for the way he captures light in the sky and on the water and how he can so realistically show the ocean whether calm or stormy. You can feel the currents, the wind and the movements of the boats. I thought the word 'huckster' was noteworthy as it implies dishonesty, maybe smuggling or theft. That might explain doing business in such a rough sea. (I looked it up. The word huckster goes back to biblical times for a possibly dishonest merchant.)

96 Fishing Boats with Hucksters Bargaining for Fish
Joseph Mallord William Turner

A seascape, it shows the crew of a fishing boat engaging in business with a huckster in a smaller boat nearby. In the distance a steam ship can be seen. (Wikipedia summary)

It's obvious why Turner is considered "The Painter of Light." The painting is huge so I'll be content to look at it.

Thanks; nice lead in to the weekend.

(To this day, I can't imagine fishing for a living from small boats. 😬 Or being a Tug captain. Or being a member of U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Teams. All blessings.)

126 Spanberger looked simultaneously pathetic and mendacious in her debate with Sears last night. She refused to answer whether she still endorsed Jay Jones or would call on him to step down, and whether biological males should be in girl's locker rooms in school. The media actually seemed to be doing its job, by going back to Spanberger repeatedly, demanding that she answer the question asked. It served to highlight her evasiveness.

Sears constantly interrupted, from which I took that she's behind and has bee advised that she has to do something to shake things up. It seemed a bit desperate, though.

Interruption is a debate tactic when the other debater is relying on programmed responses which Spanberger most assuredly is doing. Too many people rely on rote memorization of talking points, etc. rather than actually listening and reacting which is why Charlie Kirk was good at beating college students. That approach requires deeper knowledge than what is put on a bumper sticker.

But interruption occurs for the same reason that occasionally you burn a fairly useless objection simply to interrupt the flow of a direct or cross examination of a witness. It derails the preparation of a direct witness and attorney and it stops a cross so that your witness has time to recover or to stop them from inadvertently blowing themselves up by saying too much.

Political interested people react differently in debate coverage than those that are casual. And debates are mainly for casual voters rather than the politically interested (who already have firm ideas about how they are going to vote).

And the aftereffects get more play than the debate itself--e.g. newly cut commercials with Spanberger filibustering on trans. Doesn't work the other way with Spanberger cutting commercials showing Sears as interrupting. Replaying that means your candidate is too weak and non assertive to stop it.

Spanberger is and was a crappy AWFL candidate that only the Dem machine can harf up; she won reelection by fraud most probably in 2020, she wasn't apparently very good at her CIA job, and she toadying up to Muzzies in the past.

Remember how Biden was a grinning jackass in the VP debate against Ryan. It cut against Ryan more than it did for Biden. Made Ryan look weak.

It can be an effect when the candidates are of mixed gender but not relevant here.

I have a really bad memory. Like almost non-functionally bad. When I'm talking with someone about something I'm interested in and I think of something important I know if I wait ten seconds I'll forget it so I interrupt for that reason. Basically I'm a dummy and it's everyone else's problem.

Nobody wants a return to real debating more than me, but both sides agreed to a set of rules, which included letting the other person speak. In this case, letting Spanberger filibuster and lie was not helping her, but that's beside the point.

Right now, we DO have competing monologues with rebuttals as substitutes for debates, and the sooner we move away from them, the happier I'll be.

It can happen because it is difficult to answer and listen at the same time. Formal debates though are almost always prepped in advance including tactics. Dunno if Spanberger previously debated in her congressional races but sometimes oppo research goes to those opponents to figure out what threw the opponent in earlier debates.

Candidate prep is a pretty serious and grueling matter because few people are naturally good candidates for office so the candidates have to be prepped for hostile media, ad hoc exchanges with hecklers, debates, and other campaign interactions. Politics are not easy in the fishbowl times we live in today with 24/7 easy recording in public and private, endless social media posts, and texting.

"Thug Billionaire" is not an established nickname for Jay-Z, but the term aptly describes him as a testament to his rise from humble, often challenging, origins to becoming hip-hop's first billionaire, transforming adversity into massive wealth through savvy business acumen and an unwavering drive for success. The phrase encapsulates his journey from the "Brooklyn Projects" to a global financial empire built on music, entertainment, and ownership of luxury brands and tech investments, all while maintaining a connection to his "thug life" roots, which inspired his music and business ventures.

Just make boycotting the SB Half-Time Show a nationwide thing.

Specifically, let the sponsors know who are paying millions for that time slot that no one will watch their crappy commercials because they're supporting Bad Bunny.

If no one buys, or if everyone retracts their commercials for that slot, then it's adios to Bad Bunny.

On the other hand, the SB might just triple down on their stupidity. That's always a possibility.

The marketers sell what we Alaskans know as "chum salmon" or "dog salmon" (Oncorhynchus keta), a very low-quality species, as "keta" or "silverbrite" salmon to Lower 48 folks who don't know any better.

And troonism, covid shutdowns, and the list goes on. Taqiyya requires dishonesty in order to work because the Democrat party platform no longer offers much that majorities of American voters want. GOPe candidates used to have that problem as well which made people like Mitch, etc. fluid liars. Which is where the TDS people like Cap'n Billy have been exposed.

I think Sears campaign got that clip and expect to see it blasted now across Virginia. Spannberger is too busy writing some nonsense rebuttal instead of maintaining eye contact with the audience and actually listening to what Sears is saying.

One of my profs in grad school, great guy, spent his career doing research and advising on candidate imaging. Sears came out impassioned in that clip, Spanberger as a DMV employee. Not flattering.

I think that is a stupid move if they plan that. It plays into Sears hands by being countered by that Spanberger supporter sign about water fountains.

Spannberger is a candidate of the whole move to identity politics by Dems which like coalitional politics, requires juggling different constituencies--if she denounces the unhinged AG candidate, she loses angry blacks and true believer leftists, if she denounces troons, she loses the alphabet vote and the true believer leftists. That makes her vulnerable to anything like being accused of racism, supporting murder, and males in female locker rooms in schools. Majority of voters hate that shit so she has to lie and dissemble about her true positions.
