Raphael Soyer

The Blue Lantern Blog Spot

Rosemary In Thought: Raphael Soyer

"If art is to survive, it must describe and express people, their lives and times. It must communicate."
- Raphael Soyer

A deeply unfashionable sentiment at times, yet it served Raphael Soyer well. Early in his career as a painter he received acclaim for his detailed, sensitive portrayals of unemployed women and men struggling to keep their dignity and feed their families after the stock market crash of 1929. When abstract expressionism triumphed in the post-war years, Soyer's art went out of style.

Nevertheless, he continued his explorations of the many faces around hi, particularly artists and writers of his acquaintance.

With that in mind, who is Rosemary? I haven't been able to identify her but Soyer's portrait and its title indicate his interest in the process of thought. Her eyes focus inward, distinct from averted away from the artist and, by extension, the viewer." Much more followed.

A nice article worth reading in entirety.

Thanks!

The problem is that things don't get SUDDENLY worse.

Roads don't suddenly turn to sand. Scheduled maintenance may get delayed (depending on the funding structures), but life just moves on.

99% of services people use with the government (local stuff like trash collection, police, street lights, inspections, and the federal wealth transfers like Social Security) will continue.

It's why Obama had to make a big deal about things going bad by being as visual as possible with the park shutdowns. Otherwise...people wouldn't notice.

It's up to the executive to choose how things degrade. And handing that to the opposition in the executive? Who can fuck you over with Antideficiency powers? It's generally not a smart thing to do.

Yep. It's usually more than a penny, but here it's always something like "Funding leprosy treatments will raise your taxes by $2.00/year".

Then the $2.00/year never goes away, even after all the leprosy has been cured, and pretty soon that tax and all its brethren are costing you $10,000/year.

Didn't we just recently get rid of a tax on telephones that was originally sold as helping to fund the Spanish-American War?

The only thing I like about this painting is the girl's pose. It is natural for the moment, even the inner thighs that show. The colors in the background are distracting. I'm trying to think of where someone might hang this. Nothing comes to mind.

It is easy to imagine this scene but painted by Andrew Wyeth. The pose would be the same but the skin tones would be more subtle and the background less discordant, more ethereal. It would also likely have the viewer wondering what she is thinking about and filling in their own ideas.

214 @ 162. Seems like a discussion that needs to happen. Where I live the local governments do nothing but expand their spending and increase taxes constantly. As government grows, freedom decreases. We need to be a little louder and more insistent on getting public conversation going about this.

Ditto. Local County budget has gone from 30 plus pages to more than 300 in a handful of years since every County Council official is now a democrat & they do nothing themselves but hire consultants - other democrats - to tell them what new programs might look like; where rainwater runoff might flow; how to collect tampons and diapers for 'certain' women, and so on.

However, it's been noted the local Republican club puts very little fight into such obvious custody and control issues & has adopted 'Silence is Golden' as their overall political position.

Senatorial courtesy gives blue states senators vetoes under the blue slip procedure used by Judiciary whether GOP or Dems run the Senate.

If two blue slips from the two homestate senators are not returned to Judiciary Cmte chair, then the Judiciary committee will not vote on the nominee. That goes for federal district attorneys and federal marshal positions as well. The old term in the textbooks is senatorial courtesy which allows home state senators to control who gets into federal patronage positions in their states.

Federal dollars significantly contribute to the funding of state and local police and fire departments, though typically through federal grants rather than direct funding for ongoing operational costs, with the Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) being a primary source for law enforcement and programs like the Homeland Security Grant Program providing resources for fire services. While city budgets are the primary source of funding, federal grants support specific equipment, training, and crime prevention initiatives, supplementing local resources for public safety.

Robots in general will change society. And Asimov was pretty prescient in ways that they might change us for better and worse.

AI will definitely have a huge roll in this.

which I looked at anyway- looked very serious. One of the notes about his art says it was because many were painted during the Depression . This woman at least is more attractive than the woman in today's art:

284 LLM models are a lot like government in that respect because only individual humans can have morality--organizations can't because no matter how big or small, they depend on the morality of the individuals within them to function morally.

Posted by: whig at October 06, 2025 10:50 AM (WDjG6)

I include morality in my assessment of "self-awareness" (how can one not). This is a large reason why I am pessimistic about the potential of AI (as it currently exists, or as possible future permutations) to become self-aware.

We, as purportedly thinking humans, cannot even agree what is moral (or just, or justifiable) and often have to settle on rough averages. Those choices will have to be guided into the AI's "consciousness," and one who disagrees with such "morality," would not agree that such AI is self-aware, and, metaphysically, one should not, knowing that such "morality" was guided into the system by its creators, humans.

Posted by: XTC

Simply depends, other people are like hole cards in poker. You have to make the call to force them to be revealed after you put your bet down. Otherwise, you fold which is what is common for a lot of folks. But strangely enough, you will find those brave enough to stand up and suddenly find a massive number of people behind you that up until your bravery inspired them, they too felt alone.

Trump in 2016 was like that I think and that was the rude shock to the WEF and PTB. They thought they controlled history and suddenly that control was in doubt. And now that effect has spread across the Western nations that dare to challenge the elite consensus and those elites are on the defensive now.

297 LLMs are not AI. The idea that if they just add enough cores the program will become self aware is just high tech cargo cult thinking! Part of the problem is people want to be fooled. If you are of a certain age you remember how many people believed ELIZA, the Rogerian analyst, a small BASIC program, was AI!

304 This painting looks like a senior or even junior level class assignment at any good credentialed 4 year art school.

which is not a bad thing, since by that time most art students are very good, if not excellent, at their craft.

If I were this artist's professor, the critique I would offer is: the hand on right side of canvas isn't finished, her body doesn't look as though it is actually resting on the chair, not enough play between light and shadow, resulting in drapery and overall muddiness of the piece. The elongation of the skull...why? Was her hair teased up like that? possible

Posted by: kallisto at October 06, 2025 11:59 AM (dCxaZ)

305 It's a good painting. The rendering of the woman's face, hair, and posture all communicate her mood. Also, the brushwork is interesting as an abstract work in its own right.

The extreme foreshortening of the legs suggests that the artist was working from a photograph, rather than a live model.
