Daily Tech News 35 September 2025

Top Story

  • The Eternal September is finally over after 34 years as AOL shuts down its dialup service. (Tom's Hardware)

    Looking around and seeing the current state of the internet, I think they might have left it running a little too long.

  • Speaking of which, how does my upgraded 500Mb internet feel?

    Exactly the same as before, on 100Mb, to be honest. Moving from ADSL (I got about 16Mb down and 2Mb up) to a nominal 100/40 connection was a huge upgrade. At least it was until I got hit by lightning and my modem exploded.

    Since I mostly look at (and work on) US-hosted sites, that trans-Pacific latency erases any obvious gains. The new plan is cheaper, though, and the next step down goes all the way to 50/20 and only saves $2.

Posted by: Skip at October 05, 2025 04:45 AM (+qU29)

13 Pixy digs nonstandard dates. He likes to mess around with February especially.

Jan 0 used to be used a lot in astronomical epoch definitions. For example, when ephemeris time was officially adopted, it was set equal to UT(GMT) at noon, Jan 0, 1900. That was the standard epoch for a while.

Currently, J2000 is the standard epoch, but that was defined as Noon, Jan 1, 2000 (TT, not UTC or UT1). Don't know why. I dig Jan 0.

BTW, "delta t", the difference between ephemeris time/TT and UT1(GMT) is now 69.09072 s. The earth has lagged behind uniform time by a minute and nine seconds since Jan 0, 1900.

28 Evening to Pixy as he moves into a new Daylight Saving world, and morning to all the early risers. I'm up, sipping coffee, and wondering if I should brave the outdoors for a short workout. The streets are damp, there is no rain falling, but we have something like an 80% chance of the stuff today. Ah, I'll worry about it after the second cup of black juice.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 05, 2025 06:21 AM (omVj0)

29 I remember the before-eternal-September time by many years. I suppose I could now focus on the quality of people on the net as that moment passed and things continue to move forward, but it's all been said before.

But in regards to technology in general: I do miss arcades from the early to mid 1980's. What I don't miss is how slow the computer technology was, how small and expensive the data storage was, and how insanely expensive it was in comparison to what we have today.

I also don't miss phone companies' outrageous cost for long distance service per minute.

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at October 05, 2025 06:21 AM (O7YUW)

30 Miss Linda dragged me to this Art for Art's Sake thing on the uptown shopping avenue last night. As I predicted, it was crowded, warm, and damp -- not even a light drizzle deterred these people from free wine, crackers, and cheese in various shops. I took the chance to grab some supplies from the pipe/cigar shop; and there was a vintage store with actual guy stuff, including a pair of Justin boots, Ropers that I'd have loved except they were half a size too big. And no price was on them -- a bad sign.

Aside from that, all the open stores were ones we'd visited before, and nearly all had Halloween decorations up or for sale. Yes, I'll admit that many (not all) of the attendees dressed up a little instead of wearing just T-shirts and shorts. But most of the "art" was of Lousy-ana and Da Swamp scenes. I long for some Southwestern art, I really do.

Thanks, Tuna. I'm beginning to think I'll need to pack up and store my furniture and move to a furnished apartment in my chosen area, or load up a truck and drive to an unfurnished one. Once on the ground, so to speak, I can see if I love that place, look at houses easily, meet with a lender, etc.

I don't care for the idea of paying to store my things while I look, or of driving a truck with my car trailing behind as I did to Denver in '97. Owensboro, KY, which I liked even better than Evansville in IN, seems to have no furnished apartments for rent at all (source: Apartments dot com). That might solve that question right there.

86 Went to OctoberFest in Junction City yesterday. Seems like the same vendors hit every street fair.

The hit was a German food vendor. Had some great schnitzel. The cooks told me they sold out of 500 bratwursts and 300 schnitzel the day before.

The Polka band was setting up, and no one fled in terror. This is near Ft. Riley, Kansas home of the 1st Infantry Division. But where did they get those pitchforks and tiki torches so fast. Was the FBI in town?

Left before the band started playing. She wanted to go home and watch the KSU football game.

91 I remember using a free dialup service a few times in the late 90s.

It was called NetZero, and was actually free.
Once you signed in there was a little app that ran from your taskbar and that app had rotating ads showing in it.

The speed was a little slower than dialup ISPs at the time but it worked if you weren’t on AOL.

Used that when needed, as well as AOL and AT&T dialup for a few years, then moved to Comcast cable broadband for years which was often out of service for hours (sometimes days) at a time, but had great speeds while it was working, then to AT&T DSL after cancelling cable, and finally Fiber when AT&T laid the lines in the neighborhood.

I don’t miss the excruciatingly slow download times for pages that would load in milliseconds today.

They have filmed there for Mountain Men on The History Channel many times.

I just can’t remember exactly which person they followed there, Jake and his dogs chasing big cats back up into the mountains or it was the older guy who traps for a living and lives with his wife in a cabin.

I watched that show for years but finally had enough of it.

I'm guessing at that date. It might have been earlier that my employer discontinued it. At home I didn't do much surfing beyond certain text-based forums with fewer images, and reading my email from work, so it didn't bother me much. There is actually a channel called DogTV on Dish.
It’s made for that purpose, to give dogs something to watch while their parents are working.

I’ve never seen it, it costs extra per month, and I don’t have a dog, but it must be worth it for some people because they’ve been offering it for years.

I’m guessing it shows dogs and other animals all day long so your dog doesn’t feel lonely all day.

A seemingly lost knowledge among yutes is figuring out that cramming multiple smartphone camera images into their Eagle project documents may render the end product unsendable via email because of its large file size. That, and failing to rotate such images into proper orientation to read on a page are two of my pet peeves as an Eagle advisor, and I insist that they fix such issues rather than impose the inconveniences on review board members that their laziness or ignorance will create if they do not fix the problem themselves.

Your TV probably doesn’t have a high enough refresh rate for pets, most people don’t have a high refresh TV.

Most TVs today run at 60Hz refresh rate.
But dogs and cats see motion much better than we do (prime predators need better vision) so most of them don’t really see 60Hz well. It looks like a strobe light show to them so they tend to ignore it as a weird looking light.

Pets can see the images clearly on a TV or monitor that does 100Hz or better, 120Hz is where most high-end TVs are today, but monitors can get up to 500Hz now.

They’ll definitely pay attention at that point, especially if they’re see other animals on the screen.

Gmail, for instance, has a 25mb limit on uploading attachments.

You might want to consider sharing via Dropbox or another cloud storage service if they can’t get the file sizes down. 123 @113

>>Are you writing printer drivers? Cuz every permutation of block chain has already been written in C++ or Rust.

Most system level architectures are written in C++, the Bitcoin block chain is written in C++.

Rust, to me, is just a horribly written language that really doesn't solve anything that simply writing better c++ code gets you.

Here is Rust:

struct Point { x: f64, y: f64 }

impl Point {
fn dist2(&self) -> f64 { self.x * self.x + self.y * self.y }
}

Here is C++:

struct Point {
double x, y;
double dist2() const { return x*x + y*y; }
};

Which to your eyes is more elegant and easier to understand?

Actually, if you want better motion clarity, without blur and pixellation around edges, 120Hz is awesome for anything with fast motion like sports, action flicks, or gaming.

There’s a reason for it.
My monitor will get to 165Hz, and there’s a noticeable difference, but most people couldn’t care less, rightly so.

It’s a thing for people who are really into smooth motion on a screen, but it’s certainly not a necessity for the average person.

There is 60fps content out there, but it’s few and far between off the internet or games. YouTube is good about encoding to 60fps in a lot of vids, though.

Increasing the fps is really where motion clarity comes in, but you need a screen that can push it.

There are upper limits to refresh cycle and screen real-estate. Good luck finding a true 4k/240Hz in sizes at 40"+ (more likely 27" - 32").

Then DisplayPort 2.1 can handle 4K at 240Hz, not sure about the wealth of GPUs than can handle it.

141 Speaking of DEVO...

There a documentary about them on Netflix(i know, I know) that's really interesting.

It took them a long time to get the Devo thang together and going. What added an impetus to them that maybe? helped them succeed was the Kent State mess because they were students at KS at the time.

But, you get the idea that it doomed them too in the end because...THE MESSAGE became the most important thing to them, instead of the music. They clearly didn't understand that with quirky, kooky humorous Devo everyone "got" their message.
Devo wanted to pound the message into your head until you wanted to start a revolution.

"It's a Beautiful World" video is a pretty good idea of that.

Anyway with that as their goal they failed thoroughly and quickly.

Rust is the answer to the question nobody asked: what if your "systems programming" language had every bad rapid-development feature we can think of, from Node.js? Wouldn't that be awesome, particularly if you had to do systems programming but can't figure out how to program?

Just a completely unreliable language--all that bizarre syntax, for nothing.
