We are implementing a change regarding the safety briefing and range access this year. The daily mandatory safety briefings are really mandatory now if you plan on shooting each day. Without exception. These will be conducted on the carport at 10am on Friday and 9am on Saturday. Due to the growth of the shooting programs, at the conclusion of the safety briefing you will be asked to sign a liability release form and only then be issued a color coded wrist band for the day. The wrist band is your ticket onto the ranges. No wrist band, no range access. If you visit the bar during the day, you remove the wrist band. Simple. For those who miss the mandatory briefings in the morning, we will attempt to accommodate with a secondary briefing sometime after lunch for late arrivals to sign the release and be issued a wrist band for that day. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival and we'll be in touch. Thank You! If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. Posted by: Ed L at October 05, 2025 07:12 PM (BCwQW) 22
Reason for me not being able to go is my supervisor is on his mandatory two week vacation. There are things he does that I cover for when he is out.
I was given permission to leave early Thursday and be able to attend Friday and Saturday. But the thing that now prevents me going is the other person in our team was diagnosed with cancer just before I went on my mandatory MTO on 09/12/25. We are unsure when he will be able to come back to work ( even working from home). And of course there is a job that he performs that I cover. So I decided it would be best if I cancel the rip to Texas as I will be very busy for at least two weeks. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at October 05, 2025 07:16 PM (Jm6kM) 23
I discovered that I'm not actually going to leave for the MoMe until Friday morning, so I'm going to miss the Friday briefing, alas, for now I have my own firearm! And ammunition. I also bought some 9mm Luger to donate to the cause. I'll be all over Saturday, though. I swear I thought I got the hotel room for Thursday night, too, but apparently I have stuffing for brains.
I'm looking for tips on the cleaning and lubrication of a 1911A1. There seem to be a multitude of opinions about that on the intarwebs. Posted by: Cybersmythe at October 05, 2025 07:17 PM (VmDLh) 24

The place I work does engineering work for folks who land stuff on the moon. I've been told (I work on different sorts of robots in space) that the hard part of landing a robot on the moon is that during the critical moments right before landing, the dust that kicks up causes all the sensors to fail except the IMU, and so it's hard to know anything about what's going on.

--- Hey! I've got one of those! (ackshually a 1937 Brazilian contract one, but still) It is a very fun gun to shoot, especially after Stinky's Daddy put Pachmayr grips on it for me. And with that, range report.
With no competitions in sight, I finally had time to tackle a project I'd had on the back burner for a while. I pulled the Vortex Viper PST Gen II off the Savage 30-06 (It's getting a really nice Leupold MK 4 HD) and moved it over to the Noreen BN36 Carbine X. (Scope is probably 1/2 the length of the rifle) I then headed out with two things I needed to do: Set the gas block on the Noreen and set the zero stop. After I accomplished that, I used my ballistic calculator to see if I had correct values and started putting some rounds down range. 300 yards, 8" plate, banged it first shot. Not bad for a 16" barrel. I adjusted elevation for a 500 yard shot and managed to bang steel again, though, it took a bit more effort. For some reason, Sellior & Belliot and American Eagly M1 Garand ammo shoot differently than Hornady 168 grain ELD M M1 ammo. Imagine that. Anyway, elevation data was good, which made me happy. I'm now set to shoot in an upcoming accurized AR match, which should be a hoot. I won't win, because some big name shooters should be in town. It will be fun, though. I gotta admit, a 30 cal bullet hitting AR500 @ 100 yards makes a fine noise. FWIW - Cigar of the day here was one of the newish Warped Cortos in Maduro. Small quick smoke, well constructed with a rich molasses (?) flavor quality to it. Would definitely smoke again.

Since the 1911 has developed a mysterious failure-to-feed problem (resulting in a jam requiring two people and/or tools to clear, weird) I took the XD9 to the handgun match yesterday. Much better. And with standard (more than 10 rounds) mags, made for a much better experience.
I still use no optics on anything but I would say 75% of the shooters in this match now use dots. Haven’t shot the XD much in a while, plan to change that. My first semi-auto and have always liked it. Posted by: rhomboid at October 05, 2025 07:36 PM (FaOSD) 54

I brought my CZ 100 for Lazy Messenger to try you.
10 rounds of .40 S&S. HIDEOUS trigger. Hideous, long with no wall. Like the worse revolver trigger you can imagine. Just cheaply made. I stopped after 10 rounds and put the other 30 rounds of .40 through my G20. Which was softer recoiling, despite the porting on the CZ 100. But it did irritate my middle finger knuckle. Fucking Glock knuckle is afflicting me. Making me start choosing my carry gun much more carefully. In the action rifle match I shoot I used to usually use a Mosin. 90% use ARs of course. For the 175 and 200-yd plates especially, sometimes even the 100-yd, spotters would have to confirm hits for the AR guys.
For the Mosin and these days the M1, hits are rather obvious. Still spotters will call out “hit!”, and by now my standard shtick is to say “you sure?”. Still gets chuckles from the squad. Posted by: rhomboid at October 05, 2025 07:42 PM (FaOSD) 69

'm looking for tips on the cleaning and lubrication of a 1911A1. There seem to be a multitude of opinions about that on the intarwebs.
Posted by: Cybersmythe at October 05, 2025 07:17 PM (VmDLh) I can help you w/ that. The basics are: - Brush and clean your chamber and barrel. - Brush, clean, and wipe down the breech face (where the firing pin comes out) and extractor. Don't let any oil go into the firing pin hole. - Lightly lubricate the slide rails on the frame and int the slide. Don't forget the underside of the slide where the slide re-cocks the hammer and anywhere else you have metal on metal moving parts contacting each other. - Wipe down your magazine follower and feed lips. These are the basics for a quick, light cleaning. If you shoot hundreds of rounds in a single session, a much more extensive effort will be required. For that, you might want to pay someone else to do that if you don't know how to do it yourself. Posted by: Ed L at October 05, 2025 07:49 PM (BCwQW) 81

So...Glock knuckle...I've been shooting Glocks for over 2 decades but now that I'm old, I'm feeling the recoil go RIGHT into my right middle finger knuckle. It's painful and not fun.
I'm gonna have to go through my gun collection and see what guns are undercut enough to avoid the recoil transmission and which ones....hurt. Not looking forward to this. For now, the Church Gun should be ok. (PSA Micro Dagger/G43x) The grip diameter is different so I don't have my middle finger knuckle in a position to get all that recoil transmitted to it. Getting old sucks. Don't do it, kids. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo, food, water at October 05, 2025 07:49 PM (xcxpd) 83

Why yes, I have been to the range.
After last week's rifle excursion, I went in the completely opposite direction: mouse guns. In fact, arguably one of the mousiest of mouse guns: an Iver Johnson .32 short. Five shot. Top break. You could easily hide it in the palm of your hand. There is nothing for a supporting hand to do, and even with a single-hand grip, you have several fingers with nothing to do. Recoil is on par with a nerf gun. I fear the stopping power is not far out of that league. I have not yet put it on the clock, but I think a Vespa can beat it with a moving start. I paired it with a Beretta Cheetah in .22LR, a weapon beloved of the MniMiMo 'Ettes. Frickin' tack hammer. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Hot damn! I was FINALLY able to get to the range this week, first time in too many months. It was disappointing at first as the 9mm had feeding problems. I'll look into that this week. Then I brought out the S and W K-22. Took my time and concentrated on fundamentals, shooting single action at first. It was short range, around 17 yards instead of the usual 25 yards. Shooting offhand I was able to keep groups under 2 inches and centered. When I went to rapid fire double action they opened up a but less than I expected. I almost did the Snoopy dance of happiness.
I thought I would have to use a metal file and steel wool to clean off the rust from inactivity but the session went well. Going slow and concentrating really paid off. Next trip I'll take the Ruger Single Ten and the GP100 with 38 specials. Posted by: JTB at October 05, 2025 08:01 PM (yTvNw) 109
Don't get me wrong, the TT-33 is not completely awful, I just think the one I have has some issues and I think they are related to the magazines. Okay, one of them - the one that came with it (which may have explained its bargain basement price - that or the amount of sludge in it).
I'd say half of the used guns I've bought seemed to have been put on sale because the owners jammed them up with gunk and sold them rather than clean them. The Vz. 52 is no peach, but I can actually build a pretty decent group. BTW, that Polish atrocity of a Makarov was a real pain to work on during the week. Not a fan. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Posted by: Cybersmythe ======= The closer the fit, the more you need to pay attention to lube. Ditto if you have issues like a steel slide on an aluminum frame (galling can occur in this case). And if you are hitting the range hard with a high round count, lube is your friend during that event. Use a needle dropper to ensure enough but not too much and simply use light synthetic multigrade motor oil like 0-5w-20 which you can buy a refillable needle applicator bottle for about 5.99 or so from Amazon with extra needle tips running a bit more. Use very light grease (avoid chlorinated or florinated as that can cause cracking of steel upon repeated use) for interior parts like locking surfaces or barrel. Smear on, wipe off. Lubriplate works just fine and is food grade safe plus suitable lube for a Garand/M-1A. Harsh conditions like extreme cold or lots of sand call for different measures. Posted by: screaming in digital ===== 1917 and the P14 share one common design flaw, there is a delicate leaf ejection spring mounted on the left side of the receiver. These often break either from age/use, etc. Right now there are a few around, run about 20-25 bucks. But a field expedient is to take an old click type ball pen and remove the spring from it. That can sometimes (depending on where it broke) fit over the broken stub of the ejector spring and get you going again for awhile on ejection. Picture and where to buy if yours is broken. https://www.apexgunparts.com/m1917-ejector-vg.html Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 08:19 PM (WDjG6) 133

For the 1911 I use a basic "household" general purpose oil (after the vintage Outter's gun oil can finally ran dry) on most of it, and white lithium grease for the rails/slide. Wear marks in the finish provide the perfect guide for my lubing on that pistol. Posted by: rhomboid at October 05, 2025 08:22 PM (U/Byj) 138

Lloyd Those can sometimes be a problem in Walthers or copies throughout the eastern bloc. It may mean that it was manhandled in the past or out of spec from the factory. If someone gorilla opened the trigger guard and pulled it toward them too hard when taking it down, it can be a bugger to fix and deal with. Course, it could simply be old hardened cosmolene/crud which the Eastern bloc version is pretty uniquely smelly, just like Indian versions. Last week, my local department store had the Ruger RXM on sale. I ordered one to have as a spare (which shows how impressed I am with them) and went to pick it up.
While waiting at the counter, a goofy-looking character standing next to me overheads that I'm there for an RXM. He says, "I like mine. I carry it everyday." And proceeds to pull his loaded gun out to show it to me. People waving loaded guns around in crowded stores bother me, so I hurriedly assured him that I had one already and he could put it away. He did so without further incident. Looking back, if you replace "gun" with "dick" this would make a pretty good gaybar story. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at October 05, 2025 08:24 PM (nDqZl) 143

For the 1911 I use a basic "household" general purpose oil (after the vintage Outter's gun oil can finally ran dry) on most of it, and white lithium grease for the rails/slide. Wear marks in the finish provide the perfect guide for my lubing on that pistol.
Posted by: rhomboid a Check the lithium grease for chlorinated/florinated as an additive. Ruger had a problem with revolver barrels cracking way back when for users with light to moderate wear. It came down to the grease Ruger was using in the production line for the barrel threads. Basically under heat/pressure the (from memory chlorinated) lithium grease caused hydrogen embrittlement leading to barrel failure. Easy enough to just use something like lubriplate and be done with it or there are some specialty type greases (or plain lithium grease) that don't have that problem. Actually now recall that the Trackers in question were fed by reloads, so if I get them I'll probably also get the 41mag dies.

I'm seriously thinking of getting an Iver Johnson top break in .32 Long. That would be a hoot and very affordable. I'll revisit it in due time. I've had good results just with a long soak loosening things up. This thing had a charcoal briquette worth of carbon in it, softening that may solve the issue. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Starline (my favorite brass) makes 41 mag and 41 special brass. Midwayusa has the brass and Lee carbide 3 die set. Some Cabela's stores have them as well. The cost of the brass, dies and plated bullets (I assume you aren't going for atomic power levels) is probably about the same as 2 or 3 boxes of commercial ammo. One of the key points of firearms collecting is that it is highly segmented. You can have an across the board retreat in prices and yet some items will surge in value.
Conversely - and this happened during the pandemic - an overall surge in prices can result in severe price drops in less favored sectors as all the money chases (for example) self-defense weapons and the antique market temporarily bottoms out. There are no rules other than: demand is everything. Supply theoretically matters, but in practice you will see big money chasing American surplus that has millions of examples in circulation while small-batch production languishes. It's like Beanie Babies or comic books - when people go all-in, supply is irrelevant. I like to play around the margins, and the results are plain to see. Some winners, a few losers, but even the losers provide a story. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at October 05, 2025 08:46 PM (ZOv7s) 163

cartridge conversion:
I have a Daudeteau Dovitiis rifle, a Mod 71 Mauser re-barreled to 6.5 Daudeteau no 12 cartridge by the Uruguayan government. The 6.5 Daudeteau was a candidate to replace the 8mm Berthier rifle, in that it was flatter shooting, the rifle built around the cartridge was a 5 shot instead of the Label 3-shot magazine, and was lighter to shoot. However it was never accepted, except by Uruguay who was trying to save money and get the newest high-speed cartridge and accomplished neither. The cartridge apparently had some use as a hunting round, but hasn't been loaded commercially since the 30's From all measurements and suggestions on gun forums it is possible to re-neck 7.62 x 54 R to 6.5 and then blow it out to the rifle, and have a decent round for the rifle. The King Cobra snub was listing at over $3K not long after I got it (for much less, including the refinish etc from Colt Custom Shop, where I had an in at the time). Last time I looked at GunJoker, nothing close to that. But could be the lack of recent actual sales distorting the picture. Colt Magnum Carry's holding up better, but still below where it was 7-10 years back.

BSD,
Tipton makes a middle of the road kit with most bronze cleaning brushes that you might use. Also make a jag collection too that covers most major calibers. Avoid all jointed rods, that are something that can damage a bore in a hurry. The other full length cleaning rods should be roughly sized to the bore for rifles and ideally should have a ball bearing head to allow the handle to twist with the bore rather than a rigid head. Otis makes a Ripcord system which is superior to Hoppe's boresnake which can be a chancy thing to use on rifles as the cord on the boresnake or its copies sometimes breaks leaving rigid bore side insert part with teh brush stuck in the bore. Nasty to remove. Ripcord uses steel cable underneath the rubber and nomex layers on top of it. Won't break. Hoppes boresnakes are fine for handguns at the range but replace them when fraying and worn. Much less friction in shorter barrels. Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:16 PM (WDjG6) 194

Berserker, For what it's worth I have one rod for rifles and one for handguns that will work for 22 caliber and use appropriate attachments for bigger calibers. I use guides to protect the muzzles. Also, I generally get 2 inch square patches that work for 45s and cut them down for smaller calibers. Like reloading ammo, I try to keep my cleaning gear basic and versatile. The Grateful, will do to all of the things listed.

M1917 "Enfield" rifles (but this is changing) Posted by: Ed L at October 05, 2025 09:02 PM (BCwQW) --- CMP just did a $100 price drop in August and is looking to clear out its inventory of these. The current crop are parade rifles that have been returned (they helpfully point out that chromed guns will only be sold through the stores). So some of the interest may be because of that. Berserker,
For what it's worth I have one rod for rifles and one for handguns that will work for 22 caliber and use appropriate attachments for bigger calibers. I use guides to protect the muzzles. Also, I generally get 2 inch square patches that work for 45s and cut them down for smaller calibers. Like reloading ammo, I try to keep my cleaning gear basic and versatile. (It leaves more room for the books I pile everywhere.) Posted by: JTB at October 05, 2025 09:19 PM (yTvNw) Thats what I used to do. Did the same with large patches. I had military cleaning rods that I used for most of the things. I saw them during the move, where are they now is the question. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at October 05, 2025 09:32 PM (snZF9) 213
For what it is worth, for those interested in cleaning rods, Midwayusa has about the widest assortment available and some LGS stores also can have a good selection. Avoid the cheap jointed rods as those are for expedient field use only and there are better things that those now (aka Ripcord or Otis cable system).
Carbon fiber priciest, Brass and stainless steel next, and coated steel at the bottom. Avoid the coated steel with good barrels and wipe the rods after each trip down the barrel as abrasive crud (less since no more powder glass in US primers) can embed into the rod causing scratching. Brass and stainless steel also need wiping but less susceptible to bore crud embedding. I have a few carbon fibers and use those on the best bores you have, wiping down the rod after each trip through the bore. Bore guides are recommended as they are cheap for the muzzle end and only a bit more pricey if you go with plastic for the chamber protectors. The bore throat (right between the chamber end and the rifling is very susceptible to damage as is the beginning of rifling to cleaning rod damage. The muzzle crown is susceptible to damage as well so use sometime to protect it. Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:35 PM (WDjG6) 214

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo [Flying the American Flag!] at October 05, 2025 08:56 PM (+eDZL) --- I have Hoppe's gun oil from the 1980s, but only because I've moved on to CLP alternatives, which I go through fairly quickly. A friend got me into Ballistol, which has its place and I buy both in quantity, in part because I try to hit the range every week, and also because so many of my aging collection have an unslakable thirst for cleaning and oil. Probably because they spend so much time underwater. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at October 05, 2025 09:36 PM (ZOv7s) 216

Posted by: The Walking Dude Haven't been to JG Sales in years. Used to buy from them including ammo but they got pricey on firearms over the years. For awhile, they sold steel cased 303 British from Wolf I think which was good range blasting material. Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:41 PM (WDjG6) 222
Mauser 71 is the only model of military Mauser I do not have but definitely metallurgy from that era despite the fine craftsmanship did not match that of thirty years later.
Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:00 PM (WDjG6) --- Yes. One would want to do careful research into the the pressures of the historic ammo. A friend of mine recently obtained an original .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor, and there is a clear difference between modern ammo and ammo that is downloaded to the appropriate pressures. I was very pleased to see Steinel come out with downloaded .45 ACP to match Webley tolerances, and it works great with the full moon clips for "shaved" Webleys. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Probably because they spend so much time underwater. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd Ballistol is a good protectant. Have some for my Mausers. I did try Frog Lube on ONE AR back in the day, regretted it and stripped every bit of it off as it smelled ok but due to its vegetable oil base, tended to become gummy without reapplication--if you oiled it and left it for awhile as a protectant, turned into gummy crap. The Otis Universal cleaning kit has an MSRP of $159.99. That might not cover everything you need, but it should cover a good-sized chunk of it.

Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:38 PM (WDjG6) --- The big news is that CMP will have a ton of restored M1903A3s up for sale in the near future. I was actually holding out for one these and decided to go for the M1917 instead. Me and a bunch of other people, because my order seems to be taking forever. Then again, they are trying to go paperless, and that takes time. Plus the usual fall shutdowns. Whatever. I got a nice Garand from the Ohio store, so interested to see what my first online order looks like. I'd like to get a 1911 next year. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. It's nice to see the "Enfield" get some attention for a change. I picked up a early pre-production Winchester (no "M1917" marking, low 4 digit SN#) in almost untouched condition for just under $4k. Considering the rarity of it, it was a very low price. Posted by: Ed L at October 05, 2025 09:48 PM (BCwQW) 227

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd Army recalled all old Springfields that it could get and refitted them sometime after Custer--new breech blocks and they issued shell extractors as well while reusing a fair number of other pieces from the older turned in Springfields. My Springfield action (lock, breechblock, receiver, and barrel) are from an 1888 Model that by serial was made somewhere around 1891 or so. Needs to be in a better stock as teh current one is for display only (cracks, etc. and shortened). Posted by: whig at October 05, 2025 09:48 PM (WDjG6) 228

Posted by: Ed L Those would be rare. The cancelling of the P14 contract in late 1916 and the subsequent tooling, and workmen available to switch over to the 1917 was one of those things one could never predict in advance. I have an early P14 receiver that was not altered to the newer * standard which lengthened the bolt lugs for some reason requiring changes in barrels and bolts.
