As we continue to await an official casualty count because of the federal government shutdown, predicted to be in the millions by such distended grapefruits in a mesh bag dragging on the sidewalk bescrotumed decrepit momzers as Bernie Sanders, himself a cheerleader of mass death as his fellow commies in a little over a century racked up well over 100 million, and still counting.

And he has the unmitigated cutzpocritical gall after all the death, misery, dislocation, dissolution and waste of life, wealth and potential at the hands of the DemoKKKrats to declare

And yet, with all the gloom and doom predicted, this happened:

Global stocks gained and gold traded near record highs on Thursday as investors took in their stride the potential ramifications of a U.S. government shutdown, while a weak private U.S. labor market report bolstered bets for Federal Reserve rate cuts.

Investors have been largely sanguine about the shutdown’s impact on the markets and economy, helped by data of past shutdowns that showed limited fallouts. Morgan Stanley, for example, said U.S. share prices have risen an average 4.4% while real U.S. economic growth has expanded 2.2% during shutdowns in the past.

Elsewhere, out in southern California last night . . .

A massive fire erupted at a Chevron oil refinery outside of Los Angeles on Thursday night, forcing residents to shelter in place following multiple reports of an explosion.

Californians said they felt the blast come from Chevron’s refinery — the company’s second-biggest site in the US — in El Segundo, Calif., at around 9:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Times reported.

“I thought we got nuked or something,” Mark Rogers told the outlet, saying his adult soccer league match in Redondo Beach was canceled moments later because of the heavy smoke coming from the blaze roughly 6 miles away. 

Well, here's a golden opportunity for Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass to seize the land and convert it into low-income housing while at the same time destroying the fossil fuel industry. Win-win, nein?! With everything going on in the world and here at home, it would not surprise me if this was not the result of enemy action. Foreign or domestic enemies or some combination of both given the nature of global Islam and communism.

Speaking of the former, It won't be long now before Albion wakes up to discover Westminster Abbey is now Hagia Sophia 2, Global Caliphate boogaloo.

Right on the heels of a Yom Kippur terror attack in Manchester, we had this madness in London, right at Keir Starmer-bahnfuhrer's doorstep!

After the Muslim terrorist attack at a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, PM Keir Starmer made remarks claiming that he’s going to fight “antisemitic hatred”. It might have be more useful to fight Islamic terrorism, but in any case his party’s base would like to go in a very different direction. As they showed when they showed up as a mob to protest not killing Jews. The “peaceful protest” was one of those that have “death” chants.

And as I and others have stated here and elsewhere it won't be long before this insanity comes here if it isn't here already as the campus centered Jew-baiting in the wake of the 10/7 Gaza-led mass wave pogrom has shown.

Every agency, every Secretary, every spokesperson. They all hammer home that it's the Democrats who shut it down and they did it to give healthcare to illegals.

The “out of state refineries” he’s talking about are mostly in Indonesia and other East Asian countries, adding the costs of a several thousand mile journey to the effort.
A darkly amusing factoid about California’s plight; there are no major pipelines linking California to the Texas and Louisiana refineries (where most are now) and supertankers are too big to go through the Panama Canal. So in terms of the shipping journey required, Gulf State refineries are about 12,000 miles away from California.
(Trains are about the only option , but one accident and blows up, literally.)

Actually they do just catch fire and blow up quite easily unless everyone there operates at the peak level of professionalism; and maintenance schedules are rigidly followed, at great cost.
A modern refinery is arguably the most complicated industrial machine in existence, some covering dozens of acres, and everything in it is superheated, highly pressurized, and explosive. One failure of any part or system out of thousands on site guarantees a big BOOM, which is why they have their own fire departments on site.

That’s just one of the reasons it is so laughable when any government says they want to run one on their own.

Asking for prayers for my hairdresser Kaitlyn, found out yesterday she's very sick and has tests scheduled for Monday. She's a married mother of 3 and her two youngest are 6 and 3. Has an 18 year old from a previous relationship. She's faced some difficult times and then found happiness, now this. I hope to find out more about her situation later today.

My current boss used to run a relatively small refinery outside of Bakersfield, CA. He has stories. One of which was the refinery losing power. Co Gen plant was offline for maintenance and a drunk driver his the grid power pole supplying power to the facility. As he put it, losing power was frightening because without electricity, you lose control of the plant.

California just lost a major supplier of refined products, if the El Segundo facility can't operate. New supply has to be found, and it is going to be out of state supply, which will be really expensive for California drivers.

To answer an upthread question, yes there is a large Valero refinery there, and it is scheduled to close permanently in 6 months because Valero said fukkit, we can’t deal with you idiots anymore.

I believe Gavin even offered them $200 million to stay open, and Valero said nope, unless you change a lot of state laws, it’s not worth it.

All State officials would be banned from trespassing on it, all sales would be made to the Fed Gov, and all State environmental and financial laws would be declared null and void for that exclusionary area. Then it would be profitable again.

Out north of LA, the offshore wells are still drawing oil, but the pipes are submerged, and the pumping stations are behind the mountains, so people there don't see it. They pay extra to not know.

I'm on hold with Expedia customer "service." I am disputing that I should have been charged for my Evansville hotel during this pay period; I'm sure I chose "Book Now and Pay at Property." Expedia insists I chose "Payment Schedule," which I don't see on my confirmation email, and so I have no proof that I did this. "Payment Schedule," they say, means I agreed that the hotel could collect the whole amount up front.
