11 I am not excited by this new Kindle Scribe, or the price of it. I've got a Kindle Paperwhite 10th generation that I've had for a while that (mostly) "just works".

Although over time, the updates they've pushed have made the Kindle Paperwhite (10) react slower when the cover is opened, and occasionally it loses its mind and thinks it has 512 megs of memory instead of the 32 gigs it really has, won't show any book's cover image, and won't let me open ANY book on the device. (Verified by looking deep in the settings at how much memory the device thought it had.)

In the last few times this happened, I factory resetted the device, re-logged it back into Amazon, and it was fine. The very last time I tried plugging it into the computer via the USB port and looking at the drive. As soon as I did that, the device went back to normal, because something in that process seemed to fix how it saw its own internal memory, and it was completely fine again.

Thank goodness, factory resetting, and losing all the books you had installed on the device is NOT amusing. Yeah, you can re-download them all again, but... ugh.

I suspect it's not just bugs either, but nudges. "Buy a new Kindle!" No.

16 Oink!

I just picked up a Kindle Scribe 2024 version on closeout to use as an ebook reader. As much as I like having regular books, I'm at a point in life where I just don't want shelves laying around. The Kindle is a fairly good solution for this.

I don't like the standard size Kindle because the pages are too small. The Scribe, with its 10-in screen, gives you a page size approximating a normal book and that changes everything in terms of usability.

The note taking capability is remarkably good. It literally writes like paper which surprised me. With that said, the software is kind of clunky and using a device like this for note-taking is not for me, so I'll never use that feature.

18 The cat of blessed memory knocked my old Kindle Fire off the table and crack'd the screen.

It was just a few dollars more to buy a new one than order a new screen. Still less than $100.

Beauty is all my books are "in the cloud" and I was able to re-download them for free.

20 here it is, for people who missed it:

100 The finality and logistics of such a major move clouds the mind at times. A few pro tips...

Use as many uniformly sized boxes as possible and make sure they are easy to carry - without a doubt you are going to move them more than a few times. For me, I found Home Depot has the best boxes. Stick to the small and mediums as much as possible.

Pack one box. That is all the further you think about. Start with the items you use infrequently. Then move on up the frequency chart until you are effectively urban camping. Uniformly sized boxes stack uniformly and makes living with them in an apartment much easier.

Pitch everything you can. This is tricky to balance. Keep in mind, where you are going will have its own vibe - honor that vibe, start fresh where appropriate.

To Do lists are you friend. They keep your brain from buzzing about how much work you have ahead.

And finally...Only think about packing one box and only one box at a time. No more. Once you get on a roll this rule gets loose.

Moving a household Is such a pain in the rear that you really have to attack it in small bites. The second part is you have to live with house of boxes for weeks before you actually take off with everything; that creates all kinds of complications in your life. The last thing I would add is start earlier than you think you need to start.

I have a small number of ebooks which are only available on Amazon. I prefer DRM-free epubs which I download, store on my network, and upload to my devices as needed.

I'm not renting the book, I'm buying it and I want possession of MY copy.

The screens are radically different and much nicer for reading text for hours on end. Plus the battery life is measured in weeks instead of hours. I have a Kindle app on my phone and my laptop and in a pinch I use those for reading and they're okay but I strongly prefer the e-ink screens for this specific task. Depending on your needs and wants your mileage will vary of course.

37 Good morning, dear people who know everything! Or at least more than I (low bar).

In the last couple weeks, my parents have suddenly been unable to call me. They live in a retirement community and it's been no problem until the past few weeks. When they dial my cell, they get an automated message saying the call can't be completed. Unfortunately I forgot to check this when I was last over there and now I am away again, so I don't know exactly the wording.

I have an iPhone 16, and so does my husband. They can call him, just not me. They don't have a problem with any other number, nor do I. I didn't accidentally block them. I looked this up and it's not an uncommon problem but I haven't seen a solution.

Any ideas? They are calling from a landline, if that matters.

39 I usually check out books from my library and then then sync them to the Kindle device. That's a pretty great way for books you're only going to read once. For longer term things like the classics, you can get them for dirt cheap out of the Amazon store. I also get publications and PDFs; they're all right, but the challenge point is the formatting. As for the licensing versus ownership issue and the potential for censorship abuse, it hasn't been a problem and I'm not going to worry about until it is. It's convenience thing and they do a very good job at it plus I no longer have to maintain shelves of books I'll never read again.

48 Bluebell,
Lot of service providers for cell service now have automated anti spam call blocks. Possible that your parents number was flagged that way if some scamster was up spoofing their phone number for making scam phone calls. Some use random people's numbers to look like legitimate calls. Try looking up your parents number at anti spam websites like nomo robo to see if that might be true.

Landlines too, for better or worse, are also going away as telecom companies are letting them die by neglect. Wife wanted to keep ours but att service was so bad it would go out every time it rained, sometimes for weeks. We now use magic Jack with the ported number that uses our broadband connection. Mainly use cell phones but magic Jack gives option for 911 address call registry whereas cell phones can be iffy on that

Hello, Bluebell! Yes, I did, the corner of it I saw, anyway. Evansville is laid out in a grid for the most part, so it was easy to get around. Street surfaces were very good in some places, Swamp-lousy in others. People were unfailingly polite and nice; days became hot but started out cool. Owensboro, KY, across the Ohio river, seemed even better. The big red Buick performed like the champion it is -- it deserves a good bath and detailing today.

Energy, I gathered from two anecdotes, seems to be pretty expensive in Indiana, better in KY (gas was .50/gal. cheaper there).

Do tell? I used to download all my purchased books from Amazon so I had a local archive of them on my desktop in case Amazon ever decided to make one of my purchases "go away" like they ironically did with George Orwell's 1984 at one point. (Yes, seriously.) And if amazon ever "went away", there goes the whole library.

The download option's gone now, and I'm seriously annoyed at Amazon over pulling that stunt.

62 Bluebell,
Mother is in dementia care so I am familiar with that setup. As my mother's condition got worse, she could no longer operate the phone. Fwiw, they make special phones now for dementia patients with pictures or even receive only phones. Mother could not call out having forgotten how so we tell her to go to the nurses station to have them call for her 24/7. We changed her phone to receive only (she has a pendant for immediate care) and the phone is old school design like the old wall phones during Ma Bell era.

No; and that is depressing. I can, of course, locate a furnished apartment in the area I want to go, put all my stuff in storage, and move temporarily. Or do what I did in '97, have it all loaded in a U-Haul and tow my car behind me, so I'll have my stuff. And can bring the cats; a furnished apartment will probably not allow pets. But . . . it seems like a mountain to climb. Yes, I know that like a term paper, it does not all have to be done at once. But it still seems daunting.

Yep. DRM and licensing versus owning are perennial issues. Physical media made that a moot point for the most part, but we're in a whole different world these days with electronic books and streaming media. There are costs to owning the physical media just as there's cost to renting these things because that's what we're doing. I struck a balance with my music and video by maintaining my own electronic copies which I can through Plex access anywhere. I keep a library of books I highly value but for the rest of them they're gone just like my CDs and DVDs.

The flexibility and convenience of streaming media and ebooks are highly useful and I can't imagine not having them anymore. Being able to stream music in my car from Spotify is pretty great

Posted by: no one of any consequence at October 01, 2025 05:52 AM (ZmEVT)

They did this here awhile back.
Once a region is populated enough to have two or more area codes, basically any medium to large city these days with all the devices that need numbers, they’ll add a new area code.

bluebell, it might be that they need to add a 1 plus the area code to your number in their Contact list on the phone, so 1-999-867-5309, for example.

When you’re around your parents again, call their cell(s) from your phone, and see if it rings. If it does, check their Phone app in Recent Calls, and add your own number to the Contacts as a new Contact and delete the old entry for your number.

If that doesn’t work you might need to call their mobile wireless provider and see if they can help.

82 Bluebell, that has resulted in some bad circumstances for spouses or family members when jacked up cops respond to 911 calls. Big lawsuit over such in Kentucky where an elderly man was literally thrown to the ground because his wife with dementia called 911 to tell them he shot her.

Also people with dementia can call at all hours because time means nothing at that point. Avoided those problems fortunately but mother literally is back mentally to her childhood where the old att wall phone is homey and familiar to her including the old annoying ring. We are thinking seriously about getting a Memory Board where messages etc can be sent to her sort of like texting. Board mounts on wall and uses internet connections to do its magic.

83 Whig, dialing 911 seems to be a thing for dementia patients. My father-in-law, God rest his soul, used to do the same. Luckily he lived in a very small town and my brother-in-law was in the same town and knew everyone, so the 911 folks would call my brother-in-law each time to see if there really was an emergency.

I listen to the USB music playlist a lot as I drive around town. So for the trip, I brought CDs (yes! My car plays those). The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Timberline (whom you've probably never heard of), and two albums by a Denver folk group called Cottonwood. Once I'd run through those, I scanned across the FM band. Some country, some talk, some rap and "Today's Hits."

I highly, *highly* recommend Cottonwood, by the way. Not sure if their two CDs can be bought on Amazon. But they ranged from doing Cole Porter and Tracey Chapman's "Gimme One Reason" to original, witty, literate songs like "Waltz of the Wallflowers" and the hilarious "Neo-Nazi Samba." ("I met my love at the surplus store;/ We went to see Rambo Four . . . By the light of Stallone I had to teach her a lesson;/ She tried to touch my Smith & Wesson . . .")

My first Kindle was a gift, so I paid nothing for it. I like to read wherever I go, so the thing was useful for duplicating books I already had in physical form, such as Foote's Civil War trilogy. I finally had to replace it about a year ago, after 10 good years of service.

I still use it to duplicate my own collection or to download for free anything I might only read once. As I said, it's useful during travel; I can carry a hundred books in the palm of my hand.

Totally agree with you. I was faced the same situation as I had an extensive CD collection. I solved that ripping all the CDs down to lossless files and then sorted out how to be able to run them through the stereo at home. That was not a trivial task to take on and complete but now that it's done I can't imagine going back to physical media. Toss in the Plex solution and I'm sitting pretty good. We were having that problem awhile back trying to call my brother’s cell, couldn’t connect for a few months. But I don’t recall getting a message other than “This number cannot be reached at this time” blah blah,

It worked itself out after awhile by itself as far as I recall.

If it’s not even showing up in your Recents when they call your phone, then the problem is definitely on their end, or their mobile provider’s end.

Even if you have your phone set to Silent ring for unknown phone numbers, good for spam/scam calls, the number will show up in Recents.

137 One long-term side project I took on when I retired was to get a complete inventory of everything I own and set up a system for managing it. This caused me to get rid of many superfluous things in my life and hone in on what I value to keep around. I've also did it because it's an important part of my estate planning.

It took me a number of runs at this project to sort out how I wanted to do it but once I got going it just fell into a routine. I think the total time I spent on it was something like 12 months.

About 5 years into having an inventory. I can say it's one of the best things I ever did. If I buy something I have a system to add it in and when I get rid of things they go away. Probably the best thing it did Is it brought a significant amount of concrete clarity.

The other important thing was I nailed down how I track my expenses, and financial planning to a very high degree. That project took me about 5 years to perfect.

139 “Working out” is deceptive. A large spoonful of peanut butter would take a couple hours of moderate exercise to burn off. A gram scale and a little detective work on the Nutrition Facts labels shows not very many calories are necessary to maintain.

This of course is the crux of the problem. Food tastes good, and it is fun to eat. And as we age we don’t need as many calories. 1500 calories daily may be too many for sedentary folks.

Landlines, printed books, physical media... Our entire world has disappeared into fiddly phones, ebooks, and streaming media. Is nothing real anymore? I just completed a poem that riffs on these ideas and a key central idea is can I get a rotary phone as a metaphor for how our lives have changed and how I can't call any of the back.

It cost them more to do that than if they’d just sent the rangers home and let people wander around doing their own thing without guidance or instruction.

That patent stupidity exhibited by that PAO type is why the US military is in trouble. The war fighting principle is that when one leader goes down, another beneath them steps up to the plate and that is the job of those top leaders to ensure that their subordinates are ready, willing, and able to take over their job.

The bureaucratic mindset, by comparison, is that the top leaders keep the rank and file divided and dangle promotions to their favorite subordinate ass kissers by controlling the process. So you get the lackey and empire building mentality that is the opposite of a warrior mindset.

215 I’ve never seen the desert in person.
Closest I’ve gotten is East Texas, which is definitely not desert, or a beach.

If you're up for another four days of driving you could head out to west Texas.

216 Actually, on that highway, there are a lot of little towns with a gas station. I don't't worry as I have a 30 gallon gas tank and fill it before trips. I just never worry about getting stranded, as there is traffic, just sparse. And since it's a farming community, chances are good that anyone that stops to help could fix it.

When they were little, we took our boys out west (Well, Austin) for a wedding and #2 son was very disappointed at the lack of cacti.

Hope Medicare still works.
Posted by: From about That Time

Medicare and Social Security are mandatory programs which sets their spending on autopilot. Exempt from annual appropriations process and Social Security is the one fiscal program that cannot be changed by reconciliation process (which bypasses the filibuster).

That is why Trump could not eliminate taxes on Social Security earnings directly but had to bump up tax deductions for it.

FWIW, "Section 310 of the Budget Act provides for three types of reconciliation instructions for each budget resolution: to change revenues, to change spending, and to change the amount of the debt limit. The Senate Parliamentarian has advised that no more than one reconciliation bill can include provisions in response to each type of instruction, such that a single budget resolution could generate a maximum of three reconciliation bills: one each containing only revenue provisions, only spending provisions, or only a change in the statutory debt limit."

A lot of those requirement are from insurers for liability. And even if the corporate body is self insured, they usually farm out management to an insurance company for policy management and enforcement.

How much do you weigh? That sounds like some lefty dissembling going on here.

It is true adipocytes don’t go away. So what?

That doesn’t the extra 80 pounds of fat won’t burn off if calories are reduced. Again this is not complicated. That doesn’t make it easy, but there is nothing complex about this.

It took about 16 hours straight interstate driving to make it to East Texas, and that was only to a little town close to Tyler.

But I suppose once you get past Austin it’s like a whole new world.

I’d like to go by Marfa, Texas and see the Cadillac art installations if it’s still there. That’s one thing on the list at least. That’s just one place I can think of to go to, but I’d like to go all the way to Arizona and Nevada.

California doesn’t interest me as much as it used to.

Administratium undermines the purpose for the organization in the first place. And it starts building up cruft right when the organization begins and the first careerists are employed that immediately do what they can to be barnacles to slow progress.
