That was two years ago, a few hours east of Yellowstone. Not a particularly good photo, but still one of many data points that show me that the American west is the most wonderful place on earth.

Well, this is on one of my playlists, and to be honest I don't remember why I liked it. It's not bad, but something hooked me a few months ago that isn't clear to me now.

Does that happen to you folks?

91 Had an abbreviated shop day today. Spent the morning and early afternoon doing some online chores, got out to the shop and began threading the capillary tube for the oil pressure gauge through the firewall, and got interrupted by a visitor, a fellow Studebaker nut from Vancouver Island. So we looked at cars and stuff, and several hours passed.

Got back to it. Oil pressure line is installed, and neatly coiled. Plumbed in the PCV valve properly, eliminating an oil leak, I think. Made ready to move a bunch of the underhood wire harness from the left side of the car to the right side, following the alternator, which is also migrating. And yes! With the alternator on the right side bracket, the hood does close without hitting it. I was worried it might.

I showed him the house. He was appropriately impressed by the organization of my Armagheddon stash. Gave me a Dude hug.

My neighbours are wonderful. We don't talk all that often but I do know them. And not just next door. Doors down. After I clean up and start my new life, I told my friend Sammy we're going to invite the guys around our house to the bar.

Which closes at 9pm.

A couple of hours. It can't hurt.

And I'm not that social. But I have interacted with a lot of my neighbours. A lot.

Sometimes ya don’t know what to make, or the ingredients on hand are not necessarily complete. I decided on some sort of sausage/potato dish with onions and cheese, a crock pot crack combination. Being in the backcountry, way, way back in the country, means no fresh milk, so I made a roux out of the grease rendered from frying the sausage, and a kind of sausage gravy out of a can of evaporated Milk.. A pound of sausage, a few medium small taters, onion, and a can of Chipotle in adobe sauce to give it some kick.

Showing enough determination not to eat it all, I’ve decided to make a batch of scrambled eggs and fold those in, and wrap the hoosh in soft tortilla. Breakfast burritos! Should last a couple days, if I again show restraint and don’t pig out.

127 The first time we went to Yellowstone and then the Grand Canyon, I had to save one son from being pushed over the edge by what appeared to be a bus of Japanese tourists. One "lady" got too excited and I yanked her back with no regret if her shoulder had popped out of socket. No offense to Japanese tourists who nearly killed my first born 12yr old son. All he was doing was standing near a sign so I could take his picture. Don't mess with Mama.

I do love the American West. Fell in love in college in the mountains; spent thirty years on a barrier island in the Atlantic, and returned to the mountains a decade ago forevermore.

I'll take earthquakes over hurricanes, tornadoes, bugs, sink holes, pythons in the toilet (ok, it never happened but I feared this), lizards, etc. I chose the natural disaster that may kill me. I do love Florida but it was time to head back West.

In California news, we received our special election ballots for Newsom's redistricting initiative today. There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for it so maybe it won't pass but I make no predicts.

Lewis heard it too one day, and he was an artillery officer, he was perplexed, and claimed it sounded precisely like a 10 pounder or whatever at 1000 yards. He wished he had more time to investigate. Years ago, I.worked with an immigrant (wife was American citizen) from Apartheid-era S. Africa. He had been drafted into the SA army, and they patrolled the "townships", in big armored vehicles - I can't remember the name. These things had a vee shaped hull to deflect mines, but the bottom.was filled with water as an additional mine counter. They rigged a high pressure pump and mounted fire nozzles alongside the single mount machine gun. He said it really did a job on rioters.

I suppose that's one perspective. On the other hand, I prefer the perspective that we've been sitting here getting smacked in the face with the "status quo". When we didn't respond in the name of "civility", those smacking us took it to mean that they could hit us harder with the "status quo."

They came back for a third helping of smacking us in the face, and we stood up. Our size, expression, and stance gave them pause. That's where we are now.

What happens next is entirely up to them and they aren't exactly showing signs of self-preservation.

That's not the only place with reports of the sound of big guns, with no guns in evidence. Many reports from some place on the coast of India. I am wondering if perhaps there could be some sort of infrasonic vibration caused by the wind blowing through narrow passes? Like the note you get by blowing across a jug. So let's speculate that you get a loud, but inaudible note at say 4 Hz. The direct ray goes right by you, unnoticed, and bounces off some obstacle. The reflected ray interferes, both constructively and destructively, with the direct ray. The constructive interference might be heard or felt as the report from a cannon.

The police bring in a kind of water cannon. The point is not to use the force of water so much as to get them wet. Unpleasant when it gets cooler.

If any of you want to go out and look at the exact moment, according to Stellarium, geocentric lunar syzygy, the precise moment of the full moon, when "elongation in ecliptic longitude" is exactly 180 degrees will be 11:47:36 PM EDT, 03:47:36 Zulu.

Now, turns out that moment is not exactly when the Moon is at max illumination. The reason is the actual total elongation, not just the component of ecliptic longitude does not every get exactly 180 degrees. The centers of the Sun, earth, and Moon lie in the same plane at that moment, but not a straight line. If they lay on such a line, or close enough to it, we'd be having a lunar eclipse. That 3D nature means the actual phase angle never hits 0 degrees exactly.

And that depends on parallax enough that it makes it different for every observer on the surface. For me here, that max illumination happed about 10 minutes ago.

At any rate, it rounds to 100% to 3 decimal places for an hour or so around full Moon instant for everybody.

So, go out and look in 6 minutes, and you'll see the exact moment of the full Moon.

Now that was spooky. Somebody up there in charge of things saw favor on me. I went out at 11:47 to see, thinking it would be cloudy. Well, a hole opened up right under the Moon, allowing me to see it clearly. Another little hole opened up to the west a bit to show Saturn.

And the Moon hole was something else. There was a round hole in the lower layer of clouds, pretty wide. Got a nice "red halo" circle. Now, there was another layer of thin cirrus clouds much higher up, and moving fast. So, looking through that reddish halo hole of relatively stationary clouds, a near perfect circle, the Moon was shining clearly, with fast moving cirrus wisps right in front. It was an amazing sight.

That is a fantastic analogy - but not for the reasons you probably meant. Shakespeare is EXACTLY like the Beatles ... really good if one is just left alone to like or not at their own pace. But the mobs of "you gotta' love it" ruin it. Look - A Midsummer Night's Dream sucked. And some of his works are fine one time through.

Not everything he penned was a classic. Same for the Beatles. If its really "that good" ? Nobody should spend all day brow-beating me about how good it was.

At least we never had to spend entire classes in high school reading Beatles lyrics.

298 The police bring in a kind of water cannon. The point is not to use the force of water so much as to get them wet. Unpleasant when it gets cooler.
——-

Henry Ford famously doubled the then prevailing $2.50 industry wide factory wage to $5 a day, good money in 1914. Thousands turned out to apply for jobs at the River Rouge plant, turning into a near riot. Fire hoses were turned on them. In January. Michigan.

Water cannon, or fire hoses really, are an effective use of city resources in times of unrest. They already paid for them, as well as the firemen. Same thing with lining up garbage trucks. But anyone older than 29 can probably still see in his mind’s eye, that classic Life photograph of 60s rioters getting blasted with a firehose. The left successfully turned it into a propaganda victory, equating it exclusively with racial overtones.

One thing I can’t figure out is the DOD thru DARPA and others, Raytheon or Lockheed probably have spent years developing and perfecting less than lethal methods of crowd control. Fairly elaborate devices that are termed “area denial” or whatever. They won’t necessarily cause permanent harm, but rioters will want to unass the AO

Not too late. I'm not worried either. There is an evil loose in the country. One that sides with every barbaric practice found on this miserable planet, and it stands against everything that built this country and what it stands for. It sides with an army of darkness, and it will eventually need to be eradicated, because its plan is to eradicate us. If we fall, the world falls. The evil is planet wide, but it needs to be stopped HERE. The UK, Canada, Australia, all going to shit. Without us as a beacon there is no hope. You see what happened after trump won, pockets of resistance started popping up around the planet. People want their own trump, and some countries got their version. If we don't do anything else, just remaining as a beacon would be enough. The evil won't stop until we bury it once and for all. Running isn't an option.

Shakespeare was something of a Moron. He enjoyed lots of low-brow humor, much of it being lost on modern ears due to the changes in language and idioms and such.

For example, "hoist with his own petard" was a fart joke. Double meaning. He even pulled some triple entendres.

Its a realistic thing. Ponder this - Bill put these shows on in an era where nobody could "buy the book". He's giving you a show you'll see one time.

Given all that - it makes the stuff like Julius Caesar pretty remarkable - because he's got subtlety in there and I wonder if he thought the crowd "got it".

It also explain why A Midsummer's Night Dream sucked. Unless he slipped the entire crowd acid.

Well I]/i] would interpret that it meant you could go out in public carrying it, and as long as you used it in its role as a walking stick, and didn't brandish the sword, or wave the stick as a weapon to intimidate people, you are golden. If you are set upon by thugs, and use to defend yourself, then the question arises: "did you really need to use that weapon for self defense, or could you have successfully run away?" Which is not too unlike the situation in the USA if you use a firearm in self-defense (at least in some jurisdictions or circumstances).

IMAO, Kenneth Branaugh filmed the absolute best version of medieval warfare/the Battle of Agincourt in 'Henry V'. To me, that's the medieval version of the opening 20 minutes of 'Saving Private Ryan'. Incredible filming of that battle; I almost felt the splash of mud churned up from the steeds' hooves. There were other battles, like Harfleur ('Once more into the breach!'), but the Agincourt battle scenes are simply superb. Branaugh's film was pretty much ignored by The Academy, only winning for Costume Design.

409 283 Imagine if ANY OTHER BAND had recorded the song "Run For Your Life."

They'd've been canceled *in 1965.* Good grief. A "romantic" song about a man threatening to kill his girlfriend if he sees her with anyone else?? OMG!!

But because the freakin' *Beatles* recorded it, everyone waves it off. They never even really apologized for it; Lennon and McCartney have both only really said "we wouldn't record it today."

When the Giles Martin remaster of Rubber Soul finally is released in a year or two, it will be interesting to see if the song is still there. My hunch is, it will be.

It's a song. No song should ever be taken as immutable life rules. Also, the song is based on a quote from the early Elvis song (which he covered himself) so pre mid 50s "Baby Lets Play House" which contains "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man".

418 Part of the charm of growing up with rock in the 70s was tracing the history of where whatever you liked came from. This was possible from early country and blues all the way up thru grunge. It was linear more or less. Since then popular music seems to be half understood mimicry (like what I call the millennial sound where they toss discordant things like a banjo and an electric guitar playing power chords and always go to a big simple chorus sung by many people like some TV commercial pushing the slogan line) or a mix of disco and computer game music.

I actually lived in Dearborn!

I was hired as a computer consultant and stayed with my Aunt Pat for about 4 months. I loved her. We were close. And understood each other.

She killed herself in the garage. My uncle is a Marine. Her brother. I told him no when it came to cleaning the garage where she died.

Dude is a Marine. He served. Taking care of Aunt Pat. That was my job.

Washing my beloved Aunt's blood out of the garage. I could probably live happily without that.

None of bf's family were greedy or demanding, it was more like: "Here, take this!" or "Who wants/needs this?" and "Oh, well let's send this to so-and-so"
