Quote I

“What good does it do me, after all, if an ever-watchful authority keeps an eye out to ensure that my pleasures will be tranquil and races ahead of me to ward off all danger, sparing me the need even to think about such things, if that authority, even as it removes the smallest thorns from my path, is also absolute master of my liberty and my life; if it monopolizes vitality and existence to such a degree that when it languishes, everything around it must also languish; when it sleeps, everything must also sleep; and when it dies, everything must also perish?

There are some nations in Europe whose inhabitants think of themselves in a sense as colonists, indifferent to the fate of the place they live in. The greatest changes occur in their country without their cooperation. They are not even aware of precisely what has taken place. They suspect it; they have heard of the event by chance. More than that, they are unconcerned with the fortunes of their village, the safety of their streets, the fate of their church and its vestry. They think that such things have nothing to do with them, that they belong to a powerful stranger called “the government.” They enjoy these goods as tenants, without a sense of ownership, and never give a thought to how they might be improved. They are so divorced from their own interests that even when their own security and that of their children is finally compromised, they do not seek to avert the danger themselves but cross their arms and wait for the nation as a whole to come to their aid. Yet as utterly as they sacrifice their own free will, they are no fonder of obedience than anyone else. They submit, it is true, to the whims of a clerk, but no sooner is force removed than they are glad to defy the law as a defeated enemy. Thus one finds them ever wavering between servitude and license.

When a nation has reached this point, it must either change its laws and mores or perish, for the well of public virtue has run dry: in such a place one no longer finds citizens but only subjects.”
Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

Quote II

Abbas and the sewer he presides over are the problem not the solution. If conjuring into being such a "state" - with embassies in London, Paris and beyond - is the best we can do at this stage in the Great Game, our civilisation deserves to die. Mark Steyn

I know I support Israel vs. The World. But, their justice system seems a bit fouled up.

The mafia hitman who dreamt of being a pop star
The scarcely believable true story of convicted Israeli assassin Avner Harari

Speaking of Israel, Israel does something today that no ever Islamic country ever does.

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called the Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani of Qatar on Monday from the White House to apologize for bombing Doha earlier in September.President Donald J. Trump, hosting Netanyahu at the White House, expressed frustration over the bombing at the time. Following the September 9 bombing of Qatar‘s capital, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read a statement from Trump: “This morning, the Trump administration was notified by the United States military that Israel was attacking Hamas, which, very unfortunately, was located in a section of Doha, the capital of Qatar. Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals.”

That Tocqueville quote: Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat, came to the young nation to investigate the functioning of American democracy & the social, political & economic life of its citizens, publishing his observations in 1835 & 1840."

Wrote the quoted 180 plus years ago. Dude was prescient. Or understood human nature.

When a nation has reached this point, it must either change its laws and mores or perish, for the well of public virtue has run dry: in such a place one no longer finds citizens but only subjects.

That sums up America today. Democrats want subjects; Trump wants citizens.

Prescient.

72 The Dewey Bridge was the only crossing of the Colorado for a long ways. They replaced it in 1985. Some dumbass playing with matches started a brushfire a few years ago and it burned.

Castleton Tower is a little farther down the river in the pic. The valley opens up spectacularly. This is where the formerly non-descript Colorado river starts doing its thing, all the way down to Grand Canyon.

In 1964 Chevrolet slung load a car to the top of the tower and installed a waving Doris Day lookalike for a car commercial. It is pretty bad, but interesting to watch.

High winds precluded removing the actress and a film technician by the helicopter at the end of the shoot and they had to spend the night alone in the shell of the car till the next day. I wonder how they kept warm?

Argentina has failed to bring a single issue of 30 year bonds to maturity since 1900, part of the reason is the austerity forced on them by the IMF and World Bank. Another reason is the Peronists, of course.

Pargin/Wong is a leftwinger himself, though not insufferably so - he managed the decline of Cracked.com from the funniest site on the internet (after AoS) to just another lefty listicle site.

But I do wonder if this is another sign that smarter members of the left see the writing on the wall?

The area of control for Egypt and the Hittites overlapped in the Eastern Med, with a lot of small city states in that area under varying sort of control from either side. The final battle between Hattusha and Egypt was the battle of Kadesh which Egypt won, barely. There was a subsequent treaty of Kadesh, but both nations were deeply impaired, and after the death of King Tutankhamen his widow arranged for a marriage to a Hittite prince, who was killed on his journey south.
The invasion of the Sea Peoples happened after that, and with that the Bronze age collapse of all the civilizations around the Med, leaving only Egypt surviving.
The rise of the tribes of Israel was after that. The Hittites were still around, but not as a powerful empire.

My memory is that we have a tablet that contains a diplomatic message between one of the rulers of the Neo-Hittite Empire and the Greeks. If the message is accurate Troy had been previously taken by a Greek adventurer and the Hittites were congratulating the Greeks on defeating him.

And to extend this further, if Priam was an upstart Greek ruler it makes for a more obvious reason why he's steal a Spartan princess for one of his sons.

They do - they live in London in one of the more posh neighborhoods. My DIL is quite cosmopolitan having grown up in Manhattan and traveled the world for work - she still does. I'm not so sure about my son. He'd never go against his wife but I'm not convinced his heart is in it. They travel Europe and Asia like you and I go to the grocery store. It is a completely different lifestyle than we have. To give you some idea - they booked a chartered flight to get their two dogs across the pond with a few other lunatics with more $$ than sense.

And they can have it.

Good news is, I didn't have to cut any clearance windows in the transmission hump of the body. Bad news is, the RH exhaust pipe is jammed hard against the right rear corner of the transmission oil pan flange. My options there are limited, either cut a larger clearance slot in the web of the large I-beam that makes up large "X" in the middle of the frame, or hammer a dent into the pipe. Either option will require removing the pipe, which is about two feet long from where it enters the muffler to the front where I cut it free of the header pipe.

Exhaust systems are fun (eye roll). My friend is building a 62 dodge lancer, originally a slant 6 single exhaust, and is now a tweaked small block with dual exhaust. The trans cross member is only notched on one side for the factory single. He bought the head pipes from TTI which are CNC mandrel bent. The pipes are a work of art, but I had to modify the cross member and reproduce the notched side on the non notched side. Much fun.

263 I did have a real stroke of luck with the rear transmission mount. Thought I might be able to use the one that was on the TH350; it bolted to the tailshaft housing with 2 bolts, and was about 2" tall with one central stud on the bottom, and rested on a custom-made tubular crossmember. Well, no. The bolting platform on the crossmember interfered with the rear of the transmission pan, and the 2" tall mount was an inch too tall. I cut an inch off the front of the bolting platform, and the crossmember fit OK. Dug around in a box marked "Studebaker transmission mounts" and found not one, but TWO brand new mounts, with bolt holes on the top side correctly spaced to fit the transmission, and only 1 inch tall. It's setting on one right now, and it looks like its where it needs to be. I will have to add about a half inch back onto the bolting platform, and drill a pair of holes in it, but that's easy-peasy stuff.

In a true SHTF situation, it is unlikely that we will have ready access to the Internet, and chances are any crypto repositories will be spied upon like there was no tomorrow. Probably the best bet would be to own some "junk gold" jewelry. 14k, 18k gold chains, rings, bracelets. Real gold, but not real valuable pieces. If you have to cash it in to get whatever passes for money, to buy food, or an exit visa, it's just, "one of a few old pieces my Granny left me. Hate to give it up, but I gotta eat, you know."

283 Emma Watson should marry quickly while she still has the chance to form a family. Of course finding the right guy is going to difficult given the circles she runs in. I remember some poem my mother the English professor assigned her students: it started with an admonition: Marry! Most of her students thought it was some Elizabethan phrase like Merry! No, the poet was asking his readers to marry and form families. Don’t ask me for more details, I don’t remember. Perhaps someone out there can recognize this poem just from my fleeting memory of how it started! It might not even be poetry but rather prose, but it did start with marry!

310 Apparently Ilhan's nose stud got grown over with a flap of skin in that photo? Repulsive! Cobra face!

I totally missed the cafe due to some family crapola. Sometimes I wish we lived alone in an igloo. We just saw everyone at the atheist funeral. In-laws we rarely see. One SIL who "resents" that we don't go to her drunken and cussing bash every Christmas for her rare prime rib that moos.

The "normal" SIL I get along with, behind my back, decides she is going to "be the peacemaker" and bring us all kumbaya while OUR son is in town Th. I talked to her about this recently on the phone, so no miscommunication, that he would not be here that long but would be at Christmas. So what did she do? She decides again to have a bash a week after the funeral. I told our son this seems weird, I just saw her, talked to her about this, etc. Sigh. This led to a palooza of texts from me to him and then I emailed him back.

Apparently, NOW, he, his wife, and his in-laws are invited. Perhaps we were never meant to be invited and I don't understand this anymore than I am writing. Just tell me! Be honest!

I better not find out she is a two-faced backstabbing bitch after 4 decades. Women piss me off.

316 I don't care about the atheist branch and tolerate them.

This was some weirdness by the sister-in-law I love. So that hurts but my other son thinks possibly a miscommunication. I feel rather stabby about this and don't get what is going on. We have only a few days with our son and new DIL and this one decides she first wants a family deal (after a funeral??), then she invites her daughter and family, and our DIL's inlaws flying in this Sunday...but not us. Which should really impress the other in-laws we like but don't know well.

I am weary from the two week whatever is going to happen dread of that funeral and have apologized to our son and they can party on with whomever. His vacation. I only wanted one family dinner and have it with both sons and family. So I am not in their business nor demanding. Son mentioned some crap about the good SIL being the "peacemaker." I said from what? If it is to go to the wacko SIL's house for her prime rib, oh, hell no. Peace out.

Gotta get to bed as I don't like discord or whatever the hell this has been. We will supposedly see our son and DIL again at Christmas. Who knows? Maybe they can stay with this aunt instead. What on earth?
