The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The cost of energy is an integral part of our economic outlook, and because of rising domestic production, which decreases inflationary pressure, energy's impact on inflation is moderating. Couple that with increased employment in the industry, increased tax receipts for government, and domestic energy production is an unalloyed good thing. Environmental impacts from production are minimal and manageable, and modern IC engines and power plants are incredibly clean.

According to the Department of Energy, petroleum contributes about 8% to our GDP, which is a lot, but not catastrophic in the event of a downturn. Compare that to Russia, whose petroleum industry contributes about 20% and provides a huge chunk of their foreign exchange. So a decrease in oil prices has a far more significant effect on Russia than it does on the United States. Oil is Russia's lifeblood! If prices fall, they must pump more oil to maintain their spending on many things, including their little adventure in eastern Ukraine.

Oil falls as OPEC+ plan adds to expectations of supply surplus

In a meeting scheduled for Sunday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia, together known as OPEC+, will likely approve another oil production increase of at least 137,000 barrels per day, three sources familiar with the talks said.

Goldman Sachs on Tuesday said that it expects OPEC+ to raise oil production quotas by 140,000 barrels per day for November.

fiveyearoil.jpg
[Five Year Price Chart of West Texas Intermediate]

The price of crude oil has dropped about 10% since the 2024 presidential election. And domestic production is expected to reach 13.41-million-barrels/day in 2025...a record!

So why is that important? Because we can supply a huge amount of our domestic usage, while still exporting 10 million barrels/day. That decrease in oil price helps us domestically far more than it damages our export revenue. Contrast that with Russia, which depends far more on that export revenue. Sadly, a decrease in oil prices helps net importers...like China! But the more immediate impact on Russia's financial health might be more important. Will it pressure Putin to accelerate his Ukraine sojourn? Or maybe it will provide the impetus for some sort of negotiated ceasefire or peace treaty. Or maybe he will simply pump more oil and try to make up the difference.

I doubt Russia pays attention to the OPEC+ production restrictions anyway. Putin will pump what he needs to sell, regardless! But that is a nasty little feedback loop. Pump more, drive prices down, so he needs to pump even more! All the while his petroleum infrastructure is decaying, and he can't buy a lot of equipment because of sanctions!

By the way, Qatar exports most of their petroleum, so they are quite vulnerable to price decreases. It would be a shame if the Emir of Qatar would have to cut back on his funding of Hamas, Islamist programs at American universities, Tucker Carlson, and Al Jazeera!

Nearly 100,000 federal workers resign, largest mass resignation in history

Tuesday, September 30, 2025, nearly 100,000 federal workers resigned, marking the largest mass resignation in U.S. history. This unprecedented event has raised significant attention across various sectors.

The mass resignation occurred this morning, although specific reasons for the sudden departure of such a large number of federal employees have not been disclosed. The implications of this event on government operations and public services remain unclear at this time. . .

Iraq - 21%
Brazil - 20%
Guyana - 16%
Ecuador - 14%
Saudi Arabia - 5%
UAE - 4%
So, despite sitting on oceans of oil reserves in their state, the Democrats who run CA are "saving the planet" by NOT drilling their own oil, instead have 3rd world nations who's drilling practices are not as 'environmentally friendly' supply them.
And, consider the fuel oil burned by the hundreds of tanker ship used to haul the crude from as far away as the ME another source of emissions.

NCOs are the backbone of any decent military and part of that is they train the junior officers how to handle troops under their command. Russia has always disliked giving NCOs that sort of authority that the US (and Germany, France, and UK) did and instead puts all their trust in officer led corp (probably to ensure political reliability). There has, apparently, been exactly one - minor - refinery built in the US in the past 50 years. The government has put roadblocks in place to prevent building, expanding, modernizing, etc. refineries for decades. Since they take a considerable amount of time to build it'll be difficult for Trump to fix this.

No, that is incorrect. Our refineries are able to process any crude in the world, from sweet WTX to Venezuelan extra heavy extra sour. In fact, the only refineries able to process the sour stuff are in the US, though china is trying to build some.

The issue gets confused, because for a refinery to process various grades it has to be re-piped. This is done each year anyway for the winter and summer blends. A refinery likes to process the same grade all of the time.

76 There has, apparently, been exactly one - minor - refinery built in the US in the past 50 years. The government has put roadblocks in place to prevent building, expanding, modernizing, etc. refineries for decades. Since they take a considerable amount of time to build it'll be difficult for Trump to fix this.
Posted by: I used to have a different nic

One quick way to destroy bottlenecks is simply kill all summer fuel requirements. Switchovers always result in spikes and the boutique EPA requirements for specific gas blends in specific cities are obsolete. Modern car computers since the OBD II std at least, can handle whatever ignition changes are necessary to minimize emissions without those special blends.

Eliminating that means you can market a refinery's gas nationwide rather than tailoring the refinery output for boutique fuel mixes.

77 He left South Florida's Doral Volkswagen on June 21 after depositing $15,000 while covering the remaining price through a trade in and financing. Unfortunately, he had no way to know that the dealership's finance manager had made a mistake with the VIN, accidentally linking his plates to a different truck.

That clerical error led the dealership to report the Sierra as stolen and trigger its LoJack tracker. However, Sprague never agreed to having a tracker installed, which was particularly concerning since his work on helicopters occasionally used by high ranking government officials meant that his security clearance prohibited the use of tracking devices on his vehicles.

On July 1, after leaving a physical therapy appointment, Sprague was suddenly surrounded by deputies. An unmarked Ford F-150 rammed his truck, and Broward Sheriff's Office officers pulled him out at gunpoint. He spent four hours in a jail cell before detectives finally confirmed he was the rightful owner.

80 NCOs are the backbone of any decent military and part of that is they train the junior officers how to handle troops under their command. Russia has always disliked giving NCOs that sort of authority that the US (and Germany, France, and UK) did and instead puts all their trust in officer led corp (probably to ensure political reliability). Have no idea about Chinese but AH Lloyd might.

Russian officers have traditional treated enlisted like absolute crap. No respect for the enlisted ranks whatsoever.

When I was at the On-Sight Inspection Agency, we always wore civvies when we were escorting Russians and were ordered never to divulge our ranks to them, because if they found out we were enlisted they would treat us with contempt, and probably take offense as well.

Low sulfur requirements in recent years really screwed the pooch, and DEF and California boutique fuel and truck regs. California government control freaks and assorted drones and camp followers need to be taught a lesson. Cut off their fuel and food imports and hear them howl.

I thought there were to be no interstate restrictions on trade. But they dictate how egg farmers and hogs and meat products are sold in their state. An Iowa or Nebraska egg producer has to meet California regs on poultry, for example.

Just quit delivering anything to the state, that ought to get their attention. We can “have a conversation” with the rest of the 49 states. Let’s talk!

91 Feds who took the buyout will not return to work tomorrow, October 1 which is the start of a new, Federal fiscal year. Those that were not retirement eligible will get "a payout" to compensate for the missed time in grade necessary. It varies from person to person based on their service time, location, grade and days/weeks/months or years until they would have been eligible to retire.

This isn't part of a RIF. It's a "one off" program to voluntarily trim the Federal workforce. A RIF isn't voluntary.

103 Still a lot to sift through, but either the Michigan shooter's wife was mormon, or he was divorced and dating a woman in Utah who was Mormon, and it went south? And he came back to Michigan with a grudge.

But that was part of my suspicion! That the shooting was fueled by a wife or a relationship. I'm sure more will out in the next few days.

Also, one of the news sites said he talked with a Burton City Council candidate, who said the shooter had gotten tattoos removed to attend certain church rituals. THAT IS NOT A THING. You can attend any church session, even in the temple ceremonies which are our highest ceremonies, and have tattoos. Plenty of temple attending Mormons have tattoos. Either

One of my most memorable sessions inside an LDS temple was when this sweet older bald man at the altar, leading the temple session, had heavy, heavy dark tattoos on his wrists. They peeked out from underneath the sleeve of his white shirt. My husband said afterwards that those were DEFINITELY prison tats. I absolutely loved that; this man had gone down a rough road, but had turned back to the Lord.

Revision of the Clean Air Act in the 90's. Same act that required the disastrous MTBE additive to gas as an oxygenate and alcohol which was rushed in as a substitute when MTBE was found to be leaking into ground water (carcinogen among other problems with it). So the EPA declared most major cities as non-attainment areas that require special anti smog blends of gas be sold in those areas and each city under those non attainment orders has its own blend.

There are now virtually no cars left driving other than antiques from the early 90's and earlier that benefit from those blends.

An unmarked Ford F-150 rammed his truck, and Broward Sheriff's Office officers pulled him out at gunpoint. He spent four hours in a jail cell before detectives finally confirmed he was the rightful owner.

There have been several hi profile brief arrests and detention from rental car companies doing something similar like not registering a car returned when it was and then sending out a stolen rental car alert to cops. Hertz has had several of those in the last several years and I am sure other rental car companies might have done the same thing.
Posted by: whig at September 30, 2025 11:25 AM (WDjG6)

In the instance cited above, the dealership had better give Sprague a brand new truck, seeing as his was rammed, all because of their fuckup. In the rental car cases, a cash payout, or free rentals for a year or more might be appropriate. Mistakes of this nature are tantamount to swatting, minus the element of malice.

142 Widely reported today:
On Monday, Republican Governor of Oklahoma Kevin Stitt announced 130 illegal immigrant truck divers were arrested in a state wide sting.

Stitt announced the Oklahoma Highway Patrol alongside ICE arrested the illegal commercial truck drivers on I-40 in Western Oklahoma.

The majority of the drivers were using licenses issued from Democrat states and stemmed from multiple countries such as India, China, Russia Turkey, and Ukraine.

Many of the CDLs given out from sanctuary states lacked basic information and Governor Stitt revealed one in particular had written “No Name Given” where the driver’s name was supposed to be.

The ChiComs mostly use the Soviet model. Mostly. But even then they don't trust their own commanders. The zampolit/political officer has even more power than the Soviet versions did. In the Navy, the zampolit is effectively the captain. A couple of years ago Xi revamped the Navy command system to increase the zampolit's power and keep a stranglehold on the ships. Billed it as an anticorruption measure. It was serious enough that the US Navy issued an advisory that PLAN ships should be considered a danger to navigation since each turn and change of direction had to be approved by both the captain and the zampolit. So they would take forever to change course if there was danger of collision as the command structure would argue about the ship's course.

I am wondering why the gas prices haven't dropped very much. At least around here (South Jersey, near Philly). I understand the taxes in the tri-state area are pretty high, but during Trump's first term, the prices dropped below $2 even here. So far, while the oil prices have dropped, the gas hovers anywhere between $2.85 and $3.15.
Also, and this might be related, is Trump refilling the Strategic Oil Reserve that the Autopen drained? I haven't heard anything about it.

In a situation where all the officers are dead, everyone left is on their own and no coordinated action is possible, since no one is left with the authority to organize or implement it.

He was killed by a couple of off duty policemen who were members of the congregation. This clears up the comments that the police responded within 30 seconds and eventually neutralized him with reports that church members shot and killed him.

He challenged his victims on their belief. Eyewitnesses say that he asked "Do you follow Jesus or Joseph" then shot them before they could answer. The first victims were those who rushed over to help him. Subsequent victims were shot in the back as they realized his intentions.

Council candidate Kris Johns ran into him while campaigning and stated that he called Mormons "Anti-Christs".

His dating of a Utah girl was over 15 years ago according to statements from the woman. So not looking like he snapped due to a recent rejection.

Search engines are going AI now both to mine new data from input and to fix the broken indexing system which has been gamed to the extent that most searches using that model have a couple of relevant hits buried under a bunch of sludge.

And if you haven't taken a look at YT and Tik Tok videos, a lot are now AI generated content.

I suspect AI is also being used for malicious activites like malware code, producing authentic fake websites, fishing spam for security breaches, and so on.

“I will tell you that there are noble heroes who do not wear a uniform that went to that church [on Sunday],” Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said at a press conference on Monday. “I will tell you this: those heroes from that church did their job,” he added.

It has since been revealed that two fourth-year emergency residents at the nearby Henry Ford Genesys Hospital were present at the church and helped others in the midst of the attack, despite being victims themselves.

“Not only were they victims, but they also sprang into action, helping others amidst danger, smoke, and confusion,” the page reads.

That is so, so sweet, thanks for saying that.

I promise you these victims will be cared for by their church family. Mormons rally for our people like no one else. Besides paying monthly tithing, we also pay fast offerings, and that goes just to the members of our ward to help them, at the Bishop's discretion. I know people who have had bills like their mortgage paid for by the fast offerings, when they fall on hard times. And we have "Bishop's storehouses," basically food pantries for church members to cover their food needs.

I'm not sure where the church members will meet now that their building was destroyed. But bulldozing the whole site and making a brand new church in that location will probably be healing.

327 Bulg, caffeine was never against the church's policies or Word of Wisdom, the teachings that tell us not to have coffee, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, black tea, etc.

They didn't sell caffeine sodas at BYU for some reason, and that turned into a whole dumb cultural "caffeine is a sin!" weird fetish by the church scolds. (Every religion has their own version of the church scolds, you know what I mean.) Something to make them feel holier than thou.

But Pepsi/Coke exclusive soda deals for universities are VERY lucrative, so to get a soda deal, BYU dropped the no caffeine on campus rule.

I laughed when I heard. What will the scolds have to make them feel superior now, if not condemning me for drinking caffeine??

But the bastards can't stop "fixing" the thing. They are exactly like "progressives" who must constantly try to make the world a better place with more government interference.

My suspicion is ASZ will result in fewer Ks. I'm sure they have studied this at the minor league level though, so who knows.

Further, she basically did a belly flop. She wouldn't have sunk and she definitely wouldn't have sunk far or fast enough to create drag which would have pulled the boat after her.

You'll notice that the levelness of the boat does not change at all as she clambers up on the bow. The boat should have been down by the head with that much weight at the end of its moment arm.

342 >>> I'm not discounting mental break...when you have one, you fixate on a single entity as the "wrong" of your whole life and you must stop them. Military combat service, drugs and alcohol issues, etc - could just be that simple.

Military morons here will know better than me, but apparently they are finding, severe, SEVERE mental breaks occurring for the marines/army guys that were on the front lines in conflicts post 9-11. The post 9-11 vets are hitting their 20 year mark from the conflicts, and it's causing a lot of PTSD recurring and a lot of problems.

Sanford, the shooter, served from 2004 to 2008, and was deployed to Iraq in 2007. So he fits that timeline, around the 20 year mark.

There is a difference between "oil and gas come from fossil carbon" and "all carbon comes from fossil carbon"
Natural gas (CH4)can be created by destructive heating of limestone, for example, but it is suspected that on Mars, for example, it is formed by water reacting with elements in the regiolith, though it is considered chancy

I am not going to be judgey about it, I was from a Methodist church who's basic attitude seemed to be, "you cannot turn your back on your principles so that is why we have none"
