I think a bit odd, but still good looking, works better for stage and film stars than beautiful but average. It makes the individual more memorable, and for most just a bit more interesting. I've noted in movies of the 30's and 40's how downright odd looking most of the regular character actors were. (but they worked, because audiences recognized them)

Trying to read tea leaves based on special elections is always tough, too. I do worry, a bit, about the midterms, as Trump has a sizeable chunk of voters that seem to support HIM, but not turn out for Republicans in general. The Democrats are completely unpopular with the public, though, so the real key, as usual, will be how voters feel the economy is doing next fall.

Essentially to get Congress to do its work on time, the filibuster of appropriations bills has to be nuked. Senate doesn't want to do that because that would eliminate a lot of their power to put in non related appropriations into bills. The very narrow margin does not help in the House either when you have several assholes that try to derail every appropriations bill in the majority.
So FY2026 is and will be a shit show. But, the easiest and quickest way to decrease teh deficit is the Fed dropping interest rates, Asshole Powell and Co cost the US about 100 billion dollars or so in increased interest for every percentage point in interest.
Since Trump has been in office, estimates are that 200-300 billion in deficits this FY2025 stem from Fed keeping interest rates well above the inflation rate. Fix the Fed and suddenly voila---10 percent of deficit vanishes. Interest is probably running about 1.5-2 pct but Fed rates are in the 4's.

95% of voting behavior is self-starting. People decide to go and vote on their own, not because a party operative stops at their door and reminds them that it's voting day.
Throw in the fact that special elections are literally never predictive of the next general and that registrations actually do have predictive power to the next general, and you've got a majority of your work done just looking at that.
So, yes, statistics tell us a rosy picture right now about 2026, and I see no reason to doubt it. If you disagree, then I highly suggest you volunteer your time to work with GOTV organizations. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Special elections really rely on turnout out. The radical Left is pissed, and turning out (see- all the pointless No Kings and other, non-stop rallies). Normies and Trump supporters won, aren't tracking these special elections, so they lose. It's normal, if not more than a little frustrating.
When the midterms approach, money gets involved in marketing, and the news makes it a big deal that reaches normies, a lot of the Left's rabid activist advantage will go away.

Both actually exist, you can sign up for voter outreach in your area if you wish or man registration booths. VA and NJ also have action this fall with off elections this November--often calls to get out the vote are from people in other states.
Also, fwiw DoJ has been doing massive purges of bad voter registration (floaters which is where the Dems get their margin of fraud) in state after state. by lawsuits. From 2022-2025--GOP has massive gains in the states that report voter id while the Dems are losing votes. PA is an example.

Special elections have such low turnout, I suspect that aggressive GOTV apparatuses could actually turn them around.
But that requires cash and operatives on the ground, and you have to wonder why the RNC isn't handing over $1 million and some on the ground consultants to the Iowa State GOP for those efforts.

Know the guy (Donald Green), he has been doing that particular research since the late 90's. and I think the fieldwork began in Texas in the 00's IIRC.
As he mentions, he went to fieldwork because surveys had some serious problems on voting turnout research. And that is because the National Election Survey had reached the point where people were claiming that they voted about 20 percent higher than they actually were when researchers checked the respondent's actual voting history. Claiming to vote became a Socially Acceptable Answer whether one did it or not. Infected the CPS election series as well (Census Bureau survey on voting and methods which is useful).

State and local parties have become black holes where money goes into the parties and vanishes into the complex of state/local party bureaucracy. You essentially have an iron triangle where state/local parties have lists of approved contractors for legal, financial including fundraising, and campaign messaging/management. Go off the reservation as a candidate, no help for you.
Thus the state/local parties channel funds to their buddies in the consultant field who get paid regardless of results and the buddies support the party hacks keeping them in state/local office as gatekeepers to nominations/party support when they are patently incompetent.
Real uniparty shit. So teh funds get wasted on slick mailers, robocalls, and ads on radio/tv PROVEN NOT TO WORK very well. Volunteers though do work quite well but parties and consultants loathe them because grifting is lousy and management is a pita for uniparty types infesting parties.

For the helluva it in a graduate class on organizational management, I did one on presidential political operations that was interesting. Basically, the best operations for open seats are ones that the candidate controls themselves rather than farming it out to the party apparatus. And the smarter ones keep the core operatives later for reelection.
Used a variety of sources but the Harvard Institute of Politics series is one of the more interesting ones--campaign managers since the Nixon era for winning and non winning teams show up at Harvard post election to discuss what worked and what didn't. Campaign organization overall has about a 5-10 percent max positive effect on a candidate's vote share. A badly run one can cost you vote share.

Not quite. You criticize but never had apparently done any campaign work. I have, got the badges, then studied it on a professional level. Basically a back seat driver. As I mentioned, if you decided to help a candidate, there are ways--find candidates that actually want your help outside the party apparatus for example. They exist. Drive elderly to the polls, collect ballots if your state permits it, make calls, show up at events to glad hand and explain the candidate's position. Show up at local precinct/county meetings to be a pita and identify the grafters from the workhorses.
Both Charlie Kirk (in AZ and other places) and Scott Pressler rely on volunteers to do what they did outside the normal party orgs. So hook up with a local Turning Point chapter for example. Start your own--See Heinlein's Take Back Your Government primer on retail politics for example.

Guy who lives about 10 minutes from the church which I serve has "Trump was right about everything" handmade sign outside his house and about five other pro Trump signs. He also had pro Trump signs on the back of his truck. I met him at the local deli . He told me he had received death threats because of his signs, and I said that I admired his courage and convictions.

Don't read it that way. The GOP has always mainly catered to the self starting voters because a) its cheap, b) they traditionally as a minority party did not want the poors/independents to be activated to vote. They relied on a low turnout, negative ad driven base elections since Nixon at the very least.
The Democrats starting with FDR wanted and relied upon massive turnout at the polls (partly for cover for fraud, partly because the casual voters (young, people who moved, etc.) were more likely to vote Dem. After all, who doesn't like Santa Claus.
Now, the GOP is close to if not a majority party (leaving indys out of the equation as it gets complicated with leaners vs. true independents). That means the GOP has to go after low proclivity voters that it has not traditionally wanted nor desired as a party base. Trump has and certain others like Jesse Helms back in the day, but by and large, teh same Uniparty elites in states want voters they can control so the grifting may continue. So candidates have to build their own.

MAGA candidates have had to create their own turnout networks, fight against their own party when the Uniparty types do shit like in Texas where they put the Dems in charge of committees and the House speaker sold his office out to the Dems to get that chair, and so on.
Then you have the inevitable fake bullshit gay parody version of MAGA where the Uniparty ops under cover seek to do to it what they did to the Tea Party--enrich themselves, destroy the movement, and go back to politics as usual.
The key is that the roles of the parties have switched-_Texiera and other professional Donks note that massive turnout may no longer favor Democrats--mainly because they have adopted boutique and idiotic leftist policies that make life worse for what used to be Democrat working poor. The GOP benefits from it but only if they give up their idiotic corporate worldview where Corporations can do no wrong, cheap labor and cheap imports are the positions.
The Uniparty GOPe base is a hideous mix of special interests, and donors from that corporate class and they don't want the poors taking that away from their donors by outvoting the Uniparty types in primaries.
